Hello there,
Yes, I'm well aware of the stickied thread that has most of the answers I was looking for, but there are still a few questions in mind:
1) Is it slow on your Blackstone or does it work just as fine as Windows Mobile in terms of speed (opening, closing applications, making a phone call, etc.)
2) I Googled about Android on WinMo HTC phones before I came here and I came across a few posts that said sound isn't that great and text messaging doesn't work most of the time. Is that true?
3) If you can do me the biggest favor and list the MAJOR issues (downsides) of running Android on the HTC phones that came with WinMo?
I am buying an HTC HD in a couple of days and I was really eager to try out the Android OS. I have had bad experiences with Windows Mobile before but I am pretty sure with XDA Developers on my side, everything will be as easy as water.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, guys.
PS: Is the HTC Magic worth it? Is it or the HD better?
All
1) It works quite fast - for example i use to draw with skecher and listen some music^^
at same time, applications starts pretty well (but some times crash just after start, but not often!)
2) messeging works fine (as sms gmail gtalk), no questions to browser speed as well
3) camera not working
PS i'v bought HD few weeks ago only because Android works on it
Thank you very much for your quick and thorough reply, Mr. htcrum.
I guess the camera isn't much of an issue as I'm not the type of people who keep taking pictures. That's in addition to the fact that I have a digital camera that I can just use.
By the way, is switching between Android and Windows Mobile fast or does it take a long time? How long does it take to be precise?
Oh and is battery life when on Android way worse than on Windows Mobile or do you not notice a difference?
switching from android to windows takes 1-2 minutes (actualy i never check this)
booting android is mostly similar as windows
about battery - it discharges in about 10-12 hours with slight usage, and I really don't know how it is in windows - i use it for android booting only
and i forgot to say about another issue - usb mass storage might not work

What do you really mean about " about 10-12 hours with slight usage"? I am just interested because I would really like to test some android rom's but if the battery life is so bad I can wait little longer and stick on WinMo.
Just for comparison my average battery live with WinMo 6.1 without touchflo is from 3 to 5 days depending on how much I use GPS and surf around internet.
I've switched from windows to android for my htc hd2 and I've been experiencing a lot of freezing/hanging issues. I had no choice but to pull out my battery to restart my phone a lot of times.
Does anyone encounter the same problem after they change to android? Or is it like this? It's like, when i play a game, it'll hang sometimes. playing music halfway, it'd hang. or even using GPRS and it'll hang. =.= help!
btw, i'm using the SD builds. It doesn't really matter which sd builds cuz i tried quite a few and I'm still getting a lot of hangs randomly here and there.

Care to tell us more ?
Radio?
WM ROM ?
Android ROM version ?
Hi, I've been experiencing the same problems. I'm booting android through WM 6.5 through the SD card method. I've tried the AmericanAndroid (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957652), a HTC sense ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954030), a MIUI ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058809) and Darkstone's superRAM froyo. They all tend to crash randomly after a while, and there's no way to solve the problem but pull out the battery... One reason suggested on the forums was that hot weather tends to make the HD2 overheat and crash, which makes some sense because I live in Singapore (that's tropical, btw). But my WM6.5 doesn't crash nearly as often...
O another thing: whenever I boot into android through SD, I tend to get high battery drains of about 60mA. One solution I've found was to shut down the phone, then hold the volume down button while booting in WM6.5. This brings me into a multi coloured screen (is it called the bootloader or something?), and I pull out the battery. After which I boot into WM6.5 normally and boot android from the SD card. That normally brings down the battery drain to about 10mA, but I'm not sure how this works/why it works that way/what side effects this may have... Besides this I follow all the standard procedures, so I'm not sure why android crashes on me so often...
Flash NAND Android ROM and all your troubles will disappear.
Please ensure rom you flashed is the appropriate one. Check ur devicd model, choose rom for ur device, read faq/explanation from chef who built thd rom. Check recovery partition required for your choosed rom. Yesss flash nand rom and flash into ur nand. If u prefer sd rom ensure ur sdcard is in good condition

hi,
1. try booting into WM6.5 stock rom, w/o any modifications. you should be able to download through the htc website
2. try using WM6.5 a while, see if it hangs/restarts itself. there shouldn't be the case if you're using stock rom.
3. if you still face the restarting/freezing problems even using stock WM6.5 rom. send your phone for servicing.
As my warranty was still valid, i sent my phone for servicing and they changed the whole motherboard of my HD2. Now my phone is running smoothly on both WM6.5 and Android.
The service that HTC offers in Singapore is quite good. You can call them to come to your house and collect the phone personally. If you need, you can ask for a loan phone. They'll repair and return your phone to your doorstep in about a week's time. I'm pretty happy with their efficient service Tell me which company will come and collect your phone at your doorstep and send it back to you when it's all good. Thumbs up all the way for them!
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the replies. I switched to NAND with hyperdroid by pongster, but the crashing persisted for a while. It seems that the connection between the SD card and the phone is the problem. There was once that I got ~60mA of battery drain, then I pulled out the SD card and the drain went down to ~10mA (I was running on NAND of course). I then went on to try a difference SD card (a 4GB sandisk), and the the HD2 stopped crashing. It has also never crashed with the SD card removed. Moral of the story: a very stable SD connection is essential if you want to use SD builds...
Hello all,
Firstly a big thank you to all on this site for offering such a fantastic platform to rebuild our priced gadgets to something which is more user friendly...
I aint no techie but in the past have used this site to upgrade the ROM/RADIO for my HTC HD2 phone as was constantly facing a drop in signal and the phone booting up etc...
My current details are as listed below:
OS 5.2.21913(21913.5.0.94)
Manila version 2.5.20181527.1
Rom version 3.14.161.3 (04666) WWE
Rom date 15Dec 2010
Radio version 2.15.50.14
Protocol version 15.42.50.11U
some of my queries:
- I am thinking of converting this to a complete Android OS... Is this possible on the above specs ?
- Is the benefit with Android only to do with additional applications available in the MARKET (WIN6.5 hardly has any and most are charged!) or will i get a better connectivity/signal strength and a better battery life ?
- I noticed on a few forums about a dual boot with Android on the SD card but am not keen on booting the phone every now and then.. would rather stick to one - Android or W6.5
- I do have a problem with the phone sometimes while browsing with Opera or IE. The phone heats up a lot and then just shuts off or the screen freezes and I need to open the battery slot, get the battery out, reinsert and then start the phone all over again. Its quiet sad thing and yet I love the damn phone!
I apologize in advance in case if I have posted this wrongly in this forum. Kindly point me to the right direction, as always...
Cheers!

Do it, there is a tool that can do it for you without much hassle, nice simple gui. I would suggest doing the nand android method instead of booting from sd.

Summary,,, if you want to change, change, if you don't, don't. Android wont make the phone "better" but it will give you new stuff to play with.
That being said I'd be wary of too much flashing since it sounds like you have possible hardware problems on the horizon,,be a shame to get stuck in an unflashable state.
hello guys... thank you both for your encouragement... would rather flash the phone and play around with something new instead of letting it die a natural death...
Whats the latest version of the NAND ANDROID that you guys recommend ? ne links on it with a detailed description...step by step... i aint a techie remember..
thanks for the views and responses...
Cheers!
I had the same dilemma a few days ago, ended up putting on the NAND rom of android and it obviously a lot better to play around with than winmo but the battery life is not as good as with winmo on. Still lasts a couple of days on standby with a little bit of use.
The rom I would reccommend is the one I flashed, Typhoon cyanogen mod 7 without sense but every thing works perfectly on it so far.
Here's a link to it : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933951
Once you have installed it set the cpu with SetCpu app to about 800 mhz and it works fine without getting overly hot.

Also, by tweaking the CPU VDD levels you will provide to keep your phone colder and squeeze some more juice from the battery: you can find all the instructions on the first page of Tyween's thread (the link above).
hi there... thanks both for your response... is the version provided in your message the latest files/version that is available for download or are there any other versions to look around for ?
Before flashing I plan to save my contacts with msn mobile... it saves my contacts and sms's... will i be able to recover it in the same format after i upload android ?
noticed on some forums that gsensor is a problem... does it impact the functioning so much on android ?
One of you mentioned 'sense' will not work on android... does that mean the seamless touch that is there on w6.5 will no longer be applicable...
requesting all this information just to be double sure b4 going ahead with something major like this...
are there any video tutorials on this ? the link as so many sublinks... i am thoroughly confused...
thanks in advance for your response...
The version of android is 2.3.5, the latest version at the moment I think.
The G sensor works fine on mine I have been playing games which use the sensor.
The phone touch will work fine its just you won't have the htc customization of clocks etc.
I'm not sure about saving contacts but if you could somehow save the contacts with a Google account it would be straight forward getting them onto android.
So to sum up everything seems to work fine as it would on Android though the battery doesn't last as long, but it still lasts a considerable time for a smartphone.
If you follow the link for the Rom I posted, in there, there is a instruction document made by someone which is very easy to follow. Just follow it step by step and you should be just fine.
PS make sure you backup anything you require before starting the process.
Good Afternoon
A friend of mine wants to install Android onto his device and wants me to do it for him as he doesn't want to mess it up.
Is there any sort of idiot guide to show me how to do this, I don't think it'll be easy as when I update the ROMs on my Desire HD
Also which build would one recommend, I want something he can use wiht any issues if possible.
Thanks in advance
hi ryan,
thanks for your revert mate... and clarifying about the gsensor. When you say the standard HTC application like 'clock etc' will not be there... would that take away the weather background which I so like... is there something similar available in the android market to download at a later stage (i love the weather thing HTC has to offer)...
Never tried google to synchronize my phone contacts... is it done through USB or over the air using 2G or something like that (sorry am quiet a novice with gmail!). Will it sync my sms's too... ?
I have changed my battery and no longer use the original HTC one... as it would drain out in a few hours inspite of me using the phone sparingly. I now use a chinese battery from the last few months and it lasts me a good 1.5-2days at max...
Will my service provider in India 'Loop Mobile' be able to send me the new settings that are compatible with android ? Being a weekend I don't want to loose out on contact sync in the middle of the night if the data plan is not activated again...ne suggestions would be appreciated..
There is a clock-weather app in the market which is similar to HTC sense's.
Not sure how google sync works with winmo you would have to figure that out.
About the service proivder I can't be 100% sure as my first android rom on SD didn't work straight away with T-mobile uk but this typhoon one worked straight away, but if you had setting on winmo you should be able to get it on android.

hi there... i just checked up the "spritemigrate" site and they have closed their FREE BETA application... what a shame as it seemed like the perfect solution to my problem of storing sms/contacts before flashing the phone...
any other options ?
cheers and thanks for writing in mate...
hi there again... as mentioned in my earlier posts... i have sync my phone to msn mobile and hence all my contacts and sms's are backed up every night on msn... once i move to android.. will i be able to sync the phone again just as i did with w6.5 ?
I do have a gmail account but not sure if they have the feature of storing sms's along with the contacts in google mobile. I am frustrated trying to figure out an option for contacts and sms's together.. any help would be appreciated...
cheers!
Oh Lord... I am so frustrated... spent the whole afternoon trying to figure out to save contacts and sms's online somewhere before i flash my phone but sadly no luck... just realised msn-my phone service has been deactivated and most other services are paid services...
Guess this is the only thing that is stopping me now from flashing the phone inspite of downloading most of the required files...
My last attempt - any help guys ?!?!?
thanks in advance...
Cheers!
Hi Enigma075, a little off topic but watch out with flashing in case the issues that you've described get worse. The symptoms you're describing, phone heating and screen unresponsive are exactly what happened to my HD2 recently. A week or two after it started the screen became entirely unresponsive and now HTC are (hopefully) fixing it.
Have a search on google, a few other people have encountered this as well.
I recommend trying SD first.
Note that some users reported NAND android to cause bad blocks in the NAND. so if anything bad happens, you might not be able to flash windows again. Read a lot about specific NAND build before you try them.
SD builds cause bad blocks on SD card, which is easily repairable. on NAND, it's not easy, if possible.
hello Dr. Move & Wsummers,
thank you both for responding to my post. I guess I would go in for the SD first as its getting extremely frustrating to save my contacts somewhere and then put it back again on NAND plus the tension of bricking the phone completely...
Are you able to advise me on the latest link on the SD version ? Have a few questions on this method:
- Will the phone become slow in terms of usage ?
- Will I have to reload the contacts again when i boot it to the sd android mode ?
- Whats the battery response like ?
Thanks again for your insights...
Cheers!
you can use titanium backup to backup your contacts, it'll save you quite sometime. alternatively, you can export your contacts to your SD and reload them again on the SD version.
Newer SD build are quite fast in terms of usage, not as fast as the NAND, but the difference is barely noticeable.. but that depends on how you use your device. Note that some games may not work on certain SD versions.
You can try the two versions in my sig, I've tried both for more than a month, and they're quite stable.
Battery consumption in standby is low in new builds, I get around 7 mA/h when the phone is on and 3 mA/h on airplane mode. some people experience even lower values. it depends more on your SD, and the network coverage.
in hourly terms, you'll lose ~1% per hour, and ~1% every two hours on airplane mode.
if you have any problems regarding the SD version, you can check my troubleshooter (in my sig), or ask me directly

1# BATTERY LIFE : Ive seen posts about charging it in magdlr , complete discharge first, SD card connections 2 battery drain, camera trick
this n that, but its been no help. ( 3G OFF, WIFI OFF, BLUETOOTH OFF , NO background APPS )
With the settings above, with poor use ( 1-2 calls of few mins duration, 2-3 messages, half hour wifi max ) my battery life
is less than 16 hours ( + I always have battery saving mode up , and I restart the phone after charging to sync battery stat
* I DO HEAR THE CAMERA #CLICK# ON PHONE TURN ON / OFF *
* I would be MORE than gratefull for a solution to this, I move a lot during the day, and Id like to use my phone as a mp3 player, as I did with
WP 6,5 , altho that battery was a dissapointment towards a Samsung I had b4 the HD2 ( 7days battery, compared to HD2 WP6,5 battery of
1 and a half day max ) but still better than this , so once again, PLEASE "
2# SD CARD MULTIMEDIA USE : Having no apps installed , I could only put up like 20 or so MP3s over zune , I tried 2 mess with the reserved space but it had no change, while the SD card is basicly empty , is there any way to sync music from the SD card with zune perhaps?
or to make the phone understand the SD card as integrated memory?
3# FAILED INSTALLATIONS : On a few ocassions, the app setup got stuck at a certain % , and would not move , after exiting the process
the app appears as installed ( when I try to re install it ) but cant be read or uninstalled or to be found anywhere
I hope something can be aranged here, I thank You in advance.
Cheers
all is different on different devices.... most problems causes different sdcards (slow work, freezes, reboots or problems with installations)... also one sd card can work complete different on different ROM releases.. no general rules about that... someone have problems, someone not... all is lottery.... same is with battery drain...

Double check you have automatic "everything" turned off or on manual. Double check cellular signal and cellular data...is it looking for a 3G/4G tower. If you live where you have only EDGE, make it stay on EDGE. Sixteen hours sounds about right. I keep chargers in my car and home and it stays on it when I'm not using it...habit! I'm not aware there is a smart phone on the face of the earth which under normal use can go without a charge up to a week; dumb phones, yes; smart phones, no.

About Battry Life: accually almost all of WP roms are the same and in my opinion they have compelitly accepable battery life. (around 2 days with 1-2 calls, 10-15 SMS, and 2-3 hours web brosing and working with apps). It's not only me but my causin and my friend's phone battery life are like mine.
BUT you should do below steps exactly as I explain:
1- Flash 2.12.50 HW radio rom
2- Replace roms' original SW radio (PART00.BIN inside data.zip) with 5.51T SW radio (don't forget to change your radio name with Part00.bin)
3- Flash the rom ase xplained by it's cooker.
4- charge your phone to be fully charged. (the LED become green)
5- unplug the charger and restart the phone.
6- plug the charger to phone again till Led become Green.
7- unplug the charger and do the camera trick. (acually I do the trick twice to be assure it's done correctly)
8- It's finished. use your phone as you wish. But don't forget to do the camera trick every times restarting the phone.
Have a nice time
Peace

App Market recognizes me as if I was in China
Hello,
I found another problem on this ROM - when I activate it (I got an activation key from Microsoft) and try to install the first app from the market, it recognizes me as if i'm in China. I am actually in Germany and it doesn't matter what I do it alway recognizes me automatically as in China. Everything else is set on Germany, language is german and so on. I have a german SIM in it and am geographically in Germany. Its really frustrating, because everytime it happens, it ruins the account, and i have to create a new one (it cannot be changed manually, once there it stays forever). Any Ideas? Or if its not from the ROM, please tell me that too.
Thanks for everything you do here by the way

WP8 or Windows 8? Windows 8 is OS for PC only... maybe Windows 8 RT for tablets but maybe this not be functional complete, same thing is with WP8... HD2 is too old device and all drivers and others must make from scratch...
Hi All,
Want to highlight one issue I have faced many times with my Samsung omnia.
This problem invented only after recent upgrade of mobile OS to latest version.
to reinvent the same- All omnia holders (with latest OS version) try below:
1) Open Camara and Turn Camara flash on
2) Take 15-20 snaps with auto focus one after another.
The phone goes switched off after few snaps and after restarting low battery message is displayed. Even if you check, the battery level will be around 4% only. Also the snaps you have clicked recently before switch off, are gone..!!!
Also I have raised this problem with microsoft forum but no satisfactory Answer. I believe I have to go for battery replacement now..
