Backup I'm talking about is in Privacy settings called "Backup my data"

Android 2.3 User's Guide said:
Back up my data Check to back up some of your personal data to Google servers, with your Google Account. If you replace your phone, you can restore the data you’ve backed up, the first time you sign in with your Google Account. If you check this option, a wide variety of you personal data is backed up, including your Wi-Fi passwords, Browser bookmarks, a list of the applications you've installed, the words you've added to the dictionary used by the onscreen keyboard, and most of the settings that you configure with the Settings application. Some third-party applications may also take advantage of this feature, so you can restore your data if you reinstall an application. If you uncheck this option, you stop backing up your data to your account, and any existing backups are deleted from Google servers.

Sounds like it's just for if you break/lose/replace your phone. I doubt you can access whatever's stored via a web browser.

I personally have it disabled.

You sold your soul to google the minute you turned on an Android device...

This backup setting is not available to you anywhere online. But it backs up your settings, current wallpaper, etc.

I've been using this feature for quite some time (nexus 1 day 1 of 2.2) and yes it backs up all the apps you download from the market and transfers them to your new phone. It's automatic and a bit surprising if you forgot you enabled it. It did not work with my Vibrant for some reason but has worked with my NS, HD2, MyTouch (both 3 and 4g) and several other devices running 2.2 or better.

It doesn't back up "everything", it backs up select system settings, not application settings.

Google "Backup My Settings" option

I am running CM5b4 and have noticed that the backup option even though enabled does not backup any of my settings or apps after a wipe. Is this feature disabled in custom roms? Is there something I'm missing that does not allow a proper sync? Picasa, gmail, calender, etc...all sync properly. Thanks in advance XDA!

It doesn't actually back up your apps...just the record of what apps you had. It does backup your bookmarks and settings to the cloud, however. Upon booting after a wipe, it should automatically sync your settings, bookmarks, and download your apps from the Market if you have a data connection.
Thanks. The market list did show up with both free/paid apps but after a few minutes only the paid apps remained and non downloaded automatically. As to settings and bookmarks they never reappeared. I had a 3g connection the whole time. Would flashing the stock rom before cm5b4 or possibly formatting the SD card be a possible fix for my issue or would it not matter since its only supposed to sync with Google's servers? Any suggestions are welcome.
You're gonna have to wait for someone else to answer that... I'm unrooted.
I'm on cyanogenMod 5.0 b4. I can check. I don't know where that "backup my settings" thing is, though. Where can I find that?
It's located under Settings>Privacy>Bacup Up My Settings...I found that when I flashed back to the shipping rom (stock) ER79 the feature worked fine, but when flashing to cm5b4 it stopped working again.
perhaps you can check:
settings --> Privacy
took me long enough time to figure that out

Yes. You flashed back to stock, and I assume you didn't load any apps, so Google's last record of your system was one without any apps, hence they're off the list.
I really hope someone can tell me how to get that option back, it's not in the MidNIGHT ROM. (I'm on an Epic)
I know its an old thread but I didn't want to open a new one.

that is the most extensive look at your data that I know of. the only thing it shows with regard to Android is your IMEI number for your devices. maybe poke around and see if you can find more stuff.

[Q] Apps automatically install when changing builds

Whenever I change android builds, my apps magically automatically reinstall from market.
I hate this and want this to stop.
I thought maybe it had to do with Titanium backup, but after going through all the settings there I couldn't find it there.
Is this some Android setting I need to take care of? If so, which?
Thank you

you dont need to run the set up again, check your settings, scroll down to privacy & if "Back up my settings" has a tick, untick it & ur done.
p.s. or just un check the auto restore below it.
My apps I want to backup gets into internal memory on the phone. Whats up with that?
Now I got 10mb free...
For some reason, even though I have 'backup' AND 'restore' disabled, suddenly when I reflash builds my old apps reinstall (and only those that existed back when I had this option set on).
Any way to disable/delete those retroactively?
Do not sign into your google account when you're setting up the build at first, after its all set up, go into market and do it from there, or go to Accounts & Sync, and add your google account. It's because google's backed up most of your apps list onto their server.

That makes sense, as only recently I discovered how to set the wireless settings while installing the build, so that could be the X factor.

Just got Atrix: Need help with bloatware, etc.

So I just got my Atrix in the mail, and I'll create a MotoBlur account, but I really don't want to use it. I'm experienced with Android and I will DL LauncherPro but I hear that Blur still runs in the background. ("Has its tenticles deeper than just the launcher)
I don't want to root just yet, but how can I go about taking back control over the phone. What's the easiest way to remove most of the bloatware, and how can I make it so MotoBlur doesn't waste my battery and data plan? I don't want it to sync all my social stuff for me. That's what Pure Messenger is for.
Oh and do any cases fit in the car dock?
Was thinking about just deleting all the widgets, but I'm sure it'd still be trying to sync.

Just don't set up any accounts under the MotoBlur section in Accounts and use third party apps for things like FB and Yahoo. Also, you can just go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications and uninstall all the bloatware. It really doesn't uninstall them from the phone but they won't be running or taking up RAM and CPU, basically freezing them. Don't use any of the Moto apps or widgets either because they require you setup accounts under the MotoBlur section.
OK. So what you're saying is to create a Blur when I first boot the phone up, then go to account settings and delete it? Or just set it to no sync?

No, you need a Blur account to use the phone but you don't need to associate any of your email or social accounts to it. When you go into Accounts it will be broken into two different sections, MotoBlur accounts up top and Other Accounts on the bottom. Do not set up any accounts under the MotoBlur section, just leave it as is. Obviously set up your Google account at the bottom and then download apps from the market to use for other social and email accounts. Don't even bother going back to "Accounts", just use your apps. And again, don't use the "Messaging" and "Social Networking" either because they are associated with Blur. Don't bother with any Motorola widgets either. You'll already have the Gmail app and a "Text Messaging" app in the drawer.

Wait, are you saying to get rid of Data enabled as well? (enable data access over mobile network)
Wouldn't that then not allow you to sync with gmail over the AT&T network?
Also, how much harm does enabling background data in the settings do? I thought it was just a 'global settings' thing so that it allows for sync?

I need some help transfering my stuff...
I've been trying all day and all I've managed is a couple of apps using AppBrain sync.
My google contacts didn't sync either...
Could somebody list out the easiest way to transfer everything? Including:
- Music
- Gameloft Games
- Regular apps and their data
- Contacts
- Pictures and video
I have a feeling using my computer as the vector to transfer would be the best idea for some like the music.

Well, you can use the built in app manager to "uninstall" the bloatware on the Atrix and the OP has already said he does NOT want to root yet. But if he did I would suggest using Titanium and freeze the apps so you could get OTA updates in the future.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972459
easiest way to deal with bloatware is to root your phone using superoneclick and then use BloatFreezer to freeze any of the motoblur services (its highly recommended you get another Home before freezing motoblur). BloatFreezer only costs a dollar, while titanium backup is close to $4, use whichever one you want, but i highly recommend BloatFreezer if all you want to do is freeze applications.

Backup service isn't active

In Settings/System/Backup there is only the message "Backup service isn't active".
Same thing shows in Drive app settings under Backup and Reset
When I go to Settings/Google Account/Backup to try and turn it on, it just turns back off as soon as I leave the page.

Backup doesn't work on G Suite accounts. You need a normal @gmail.com-account for backup.
The phone also has other non gsuite should. Can I somehow turn it on using them?
I am pretty sure it worked on my lg v20 using the same accounts

Yes, if you choose that account for backup. That's how I do it using both G Suite and non-G-Suite accounts.
Thanks, but I can't seem to set it to backup into the non-gsuite account.
I tried from Drive (set to that account) and from Google accounts - no go.
How do I go about turning backup on for the non-gsuite account please ?

That's what I thought, I have changed to a standard @gmail.com account, but the backup switch still goes off. There must be another factor or switch that is related. The switch goes blue and turns on, but when I hit the back and then look again, it is switched off. I am attaching two screenshots just in case there is something I am missing . Clearing Drive storage and cache didn't help, same with Backup Transport.
Second screenshot shows Drive message, and what happens when I try to change account
But I didn't get to this until late in the setup process, and I really really don't want to do a hard reset without even a backup.
Thanks for helping any other ideas?
That's a bummer. Try clearing cache/data of all Google apps, like Play Store, Services etc. hopefully something will resort the issue.

Problems with Oneplus 6T and Outlook for Android

I have Outlook for Android on my Oneplus 6T running stock OS rooted. For some reason I am unable to set gmail as my default mail app. I can disable Outlook and than I can change it. Sounds to me like you said yes somewhere to a post installation prompt to set as default app. You can either go into settings>apps & notifications> default apps and clear it... Or you could go to outlook's app settings specifically and clear it or just clear the apps storage data/cache and start over.

No, I never had to set it as device admin. I want my gmail app as default, but M$ thinks they know best and want their app to be default. I understand your concern but there isn't really an issue with it being your default. Any account ot email you like can be added to either app and you can also launch either to set defaults. I have a 5T myself with outlook as I use it for college and it doesn't take over. This would likely mean that it was something you had done in the past without meaning to. Things that could fix this considering you already tried uninstalling an app is reflashing your software assuming you're on OOS or just factory resetting your device. I don't believe Outlook is the issue here as I have 2 of the exact same email apps on my device and I don't have this problem

It is a concern and an issue when an app takes over settings like this. This is the only app I have seen that does it. Doesn't matter if I can just use it as is without issue. It should not force me to use their app as default, or even just force it to be set as default. That is what malware does. Forcing changes that the user didn't approve is wrong. I have notice this even after flashing back to complete stock, no root, and wiping data. I bet if you look in the settings you will find it default, regardless of it actually acting as default.

Google isn't offering up a virus to your phone. However, there are no defaults set in my settings for it. Stock fw does set unnecessary defaults I've noticed this on any stock software. You may want to consider choosing your software as you have a wonderful device with this capability. It is strange to me though that an app like that could change those things without your permission without also doing other things especially when I've never experienced an issue

As I had stated before stock can set unecessary defaults there's no reason to even have a default mail as both work without that process or permission. Any picture or message etc. Can be shared with the app no need for defaults. This is an odd occurrence but as you can see here the default is no where to be seen for me even though I have the same mail applications as you.

Well, than that is because your ROM doesn't use the Mail App default. I am using OOS, and it does. The issue still remains that an app should not be able to force itself to default and not let the user change it. Malware behavior at it's finest.
