Im sorry , but am I wrong, I thought these phones came with Gorilla Glass?
Its pretty tough but I wouldn't put it in my pocket with keys or something.
I dont put it in my pocket with keys or anything like that, but I didnt buy the screen protector for the simple reason that someone said it is very scratch RESISTANT. I have started to see slight scratches very very light though on the screen just from regular use.
I could see it if i was putting it in same pocket as change or keys but I dont , and my hands are clean so trying to figure out the light scratches and how regular use would do that when they say its gorilla glass?
You're probably better off with keys in your pocket then tiny abasive paticles. Sand or the like will probably tear it up. There's some interesting Youtubes about people really abusing Gorilla Glass, none of it actually recomended of course.
The glass is tough by all means, very scratch resistant, but is NOT shatterproof OR scratch proof.
A pocket of keys, or even some sand will get scratches all over the screen.
Dropping the Epic onto concrete will shatter the screen. I dropped mine out of my pocket at waist level, onto cerement, and the gorilla glass cracked, and got scratches on the screen.
Oyster shell bits ****ed mine up...
I have purposefully attacked my screen with : keys, a straight razor, a pin, a horribly sharp cuticle cutting tool, and an accidental slide across a parking lot.
What scratched my screen was a small cloth for screen wiping that came with my brother's evo accessory bundle. Ha ha..

My phone naked in my front pocket and I have 1 hairline scratch that I see a couple times aweek. It is either from a binder clip or a group of unused staples.
I am sure this information has been very interesting and useful to everyone who is reading it.

Yes. At first I was just experimenting with a small corner. But, yeah, the cloth must have had some abrasive particles stuck in it. I shall stick with using my pant leg.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That's how I scratched my screen to from my cloth. The razors and things doesn't scratch the screen cause it's not as hard as the glass. A diamond would def. Scratch the screen cause it's higher up on the ( don't remember name) scale
Yea small abrasive particles are our achilles heel. Its strange, but what are we going to do. Like the one poster on here said the pant leg is what I use too.

So does anybody use screen protector at all??? if so which one.. if not..why not? I was under impression that its gorilla glass and needs no protector but I guess I was wrong too...
I don't use anything on mine - got it on launch day and the screen is still pristine.
I asked this question when I first got the phone, and basically the explanation for me receiving a scrtch on my scratchless screen was that sand particles and quartz and stuff break through the compound of the gorilla glass.
Idk where I touched quartz, but I figured gorilla glass is just another marketing ploy

I bought 2. I keep mine in my coat or shirt pocket and have no scratches. My wife keeps her's in her purse and has a single faint scratch on it.
neither of us use screen protectors.
i wished i had bought the screen protector , now its too late faint little scratches all over it
Had mine for about a month now and in absolute perfect condition, I do treat it like a baby though ( nothing in the same pocket with my phone ) but I just got a InvisibleShield for it off eBay for $3.99 shipped, and the fishbone, so I don't gotta worry too much. But ya definitely grab an InvisibleShield, its the best feel and durability and for $4 - $5 off eBay ( US Sellers ) its FOR SURE worth it!
-D3luSi0n4L
I use the Zagg shield. I didn't want to risk scratching it but now I might take it off just because it takes away from the screen resolution.

my phone is being replace by sprint on tuesday. With me knowing that I decided to put our screen through a test. Off came the screen protector, I scratched the screen with keys, coins and nails. I put it in my pocket. Placed it on dinner table face down and slid it across the table. To my surprise, the screen is brand new without a scratch or surface scratch. I've come to the conclusion, screen protectors are a waste of money.
I was thinking of doing a youtube video. But it's friday, and I have better things to do.
Well, it's very scratch resistant based on the stories here, however adding some sand to your tests and you'll probably be singing a different tune. Some jewelry can also scratch the screen.
There is a Korean-language demonstration of this on youtube. They tried it on the i9000. It's pretty impressive. I think you can find it if you search 'galaxy s scratch test' or something similar

i dont know how i did it, but mine is scratched. 2 very small thin scratches, but they are there. i rubbed it with a cloth thinking it was a smudge. no dice. its a scratch.

LOL, read around and you'll see what I mean about sand. (but please don't do it).
And besides, you cannot claim "scratch proof" until you've tested it in all conditions.
I've had two epics. The first one I left bare, and even though I babied it and never set it anywhere but on my pocket and it's rabbit fur charging bed, it still got a lil hair sized scratch in the middle of the screen.
I've put a screen protector on the second one.
I noticed the screen is very resistant to scratches myself. When I first got the phone I had a screen protector on it but then I took it off because it kinda ruins the brightness of the display.
Anyway, after having it off for about a month the screen has maybe 4 very small scratches and that's it. I've dropped it in the parking lot, floor and slid it across the table tons of times not to mention it being in my pocket with keys. I'm in the Army I've even had it with me at the range where we lay on the ground and get sandy dirt in our pockets and it still is doing really well. I'm impressed.
It is definitely NOT scratch proof!
It is very durable and scratch resistant though.
I've had it since launch day, I have a small, fine, but visible, scratch near the top left of my screen. It's as if there's a small, fine facial hair the screen I can't remove.
I don't know how it got there, I keep it out of the pocket that I put my keys/change in. I've never dropped it.
That said, I've been hesitant to get a protector because I like how smooth the screen is.

Exactly, resistant enough that I prefer no screen protection. I can live with hairline scratches if its the only thing is need to ware a screen protector for. I have I small hairline scratch and its so difficult to see, I have to have a bright light hit it just so and look really hard to find it because its so fine...

Yes, its fairly scratch resistant but not scratch proof..it boils down to applying pressure at the right angle..
I work with alot of abrasive materials. Sometimes I'll have sand and diamond dust on my fingers when using my phone. My phone is scratched to hell from this. But nothing to deep to maker me warrant using a screen protector. The scratches are only visanle with the screen off

Gotta say I'm pretty disappointed with this screen. I allready have a few scratches across the screen in just a few days of use. I've done everything to my poor Nexus one, including dropping it 2 stories off the top of an elevator with no scratches in the screen.
Anyone else Disappointed with the screen?

Not in the least. I just returned a TMobile tab that I've had since release date (replaced w/ an ATT tab that I will be flashing soon) and I can't imagine what you've done to scratch that thing... actually, what did you do to scratch it?
I've babied this thing. The only time I transport it is in the inner pocket of my jacket which is clean. 2 hair line scratches down each side of the screen. Wish I knew what did it so I could avoid doing so again. I hate screen protectors and feel they are a waste on today's generation of screens. Maybe not. Otherwise I'm very happy with it.

but anyway, ive dropped mine a few times, stood on it in boots, had my cousin kick it and it has no marks at all. damn impressed.
Anything harder than Gorilla Glass can scratch it. Many types of sand particles are hard enough. Sounds like that jacket pocket ain't as clean as you think it is.
I dropped mine 5 feet face down onto dirty hardwood floor. It slid face down over dirt and sand for about 3 feet. Not one scratch. My heart however will probably not recover from the scare. I had just opened the box and taken the plastic cover off.

I use Clear Protector shields on anything I get since Gorilla Glass can get beat up by giraffes LOL.
I'm quite impressed by how tough the display is to be honest.
I had it in my pocket next to a bunch of keys...not a single mark on the screen.
Fingerprints are a pain, but there's actually something quite satisfying when cleaning the display with chamois leather until it is squeeky-shiny-new
I don't trust any glass products not to scratch, whatever fancy name they call it. I've had one of these on since day 1: http://www.handhelditems.com/steinh...-screen-protector-ultra-crystal-p-152827.html
Gorilla Glass isn't scratch proof, and I have no idea if you were babying it how you scratched it. I'm pretty tough on my devices (Samsung Fascinate, Samsung Focus, and Galaxy Tab) - and not a single one has scratches.
Do you have sand or something in your pocket or bag? Sand is strong enough to scratch glass.
@daniel.weck - keys won't scratch normal glass, let alone supposed gorilla glass, they aren't strong enough.
People have had luck in the past buffing out small scratches with glass polish - YMMV and I'd personally be too afraid to try it.
Some screen protectors because of how they are applied will "fill in" small scratches so you don't even see them anymore. I highly recommend this route.
Had the phone a couple of weeks now and just noticed my first scratch on my screen..
I thought the gorilla glass would make this less of a problem but I've not done anything like drop it or drag it along anything.
Gorilla glas does not mean scratch proof, there are many things that can scratch it, for example sand particles.

never got a scratch on my n8 n omnia hd.
they weren't joking when they said its better to be safe than sorry, always use protection.
18 months with my HD2 with no protector and no scratches
I hope my soon-to-arrive SGS2 will fare as well.
yea i think i won't buy one either
GODZILLA GLASS TRUE FACTS:
It won't get scratches from your nails or from your normal keys or coins.
However, it will scratch with, and so please avoid, these objects:
1) Hardened steel (like expensive tools or expensive knives)
2) Precious STONE jewelry (if you are a woman, or loan your phone to a woman, or wear rings and earrings yourself, make sure precious stones like diamonds do not come in contact with the screen - they will scratch the screen with minimal or on effort; give your phone for 30 seconds to your girlfriend, she will put it to her ear, the ear has a diamond earring you gave her on Valentine's Day - she will give you the phone back with at least one scratch on it)
3) Glass cutting instruments and parts of those instruments (I hope I do not have to expain this one).
4) Most hard sands if applied properly
Edit:
Additional notes on OLEOPHOBIC COATING that SGS2 has
The oleophobic coating is also very sensitive. Avoid household solvents or strong cleaning liquids coming in contact with the screen. They will dissolve the oleophobic coating and only then you will understand how much your now defunct oleophobic coating was helping with finger prints, skin oil, and feminine skin care products (when the aforementioned girlfriend puts the phone to her freaking fake-looking powder- and foundation-covered cheek that produce a gooey oily mess when mixed with her normal face oils and sweat).
EDIT #2: I am not bad mouthing GG - it is a great product, and GG coupled with oleophobic coating provide for a GREAT EXCELLENT screen of SGS2.
It is way, way better than the cheap glass or plastic many cheap devices are sporting. Just please realize GG cannot and will not guarantee 100% protection from scratches or breaks.
gorilla is good enough to suffer from keys, knives, coins in test but it can be easilly scratched by sand.
But the scratches that you may see, is not the gorilla glass.
Screens on phones nowsaday are covered by a fingerprint proof ( although it's not effective) and the sand kill this proof easilly.

dropped my sgs2 down an escalator today ... glass didn't break nor got any scratches. gorilla glas rocks ...
I was REALLLY careful with my s1 at first. And I still managed to get scratches. SAND WILL SCRATCH IT. And I don't mean like lots of sand. I mean a few grains of sand left in your pocket from last summer.
Though I have to say that the scratches were invisible when the screen was on.
I also had scratches on my phone already and carried the damn thing in a pouch in my pocket...went to o2 today and got it exchange hehe, new phone I slapped screen protectors on straight away!!
i had two very fine scratches that were not noticeable on GSI. I don't think i'm going to have my phone long enough to care about the scratches later on.
also the coating on the GSII is awesome. It allows me to leave my microfiber wipe at home

I have a scratch on mine, its almost 6 days old. i think iam gonna try displex for touch screens
I dropped my GS2 on a gravel road from about chest high, glass side down. I picked it up and the screen was completely dusty and horrible looking and I said UhOh. I got a microfiber cloth and wiped off the phone after blowing as much as possible of the screen. Got it all wiped off, and in direct sunlight at every angle, not a single scratch, blemish, pit, nothing lol. I have a slim gel on the phone, but the screen is naked. Whew!
Cool!
Peep peep.
It's called Gorilla Glass for a reason - gorillas are well known for their high resistance to being dropped by humans onto gravel.
I liked that someone experimented with Gorilla Glass
Swore I was going to read chest pains followed by back to back heart attacks until death.
Glad to hear it's ok.

Yeah I decided to forego the cases and the screen protectors after seeing some videos (not produced by screen protector sellers).
I was using Reallook but it got to slimy and even carrying the phone in my pocket with keys, only the plastic edges gets a little nicked. My Captivate's screen never had a scratch and I am the most un anal person when it comes to worrying about scratches on the body of the handset. Under everyday conditions the glass really is scratch resistant and I would say scratch proof in a pocket with keys.

Gorilla glass is good stuff......The "screen protector" makers are so scared of it they are posting questionable videos on YouTube of how "easy" it is to scratch. "fear" is a great advertising tactic and sells a lot of things. In fact the glass is amazingly resistant to scratching.
I would be more worried about the interior circuitry shock on a drop than the glass.
As long as HTC is in business, the screen protector people will be too. You can look at an HTC screen wrong and scratch it.
You are very lucky. Its a different story if you drop it in the sea or fall in with it in your pocket
Put it this way I've got a very expensive piece of gorilla glass for a coaster. Ohh and a spare battery that I'm too scared to use :-(
I must admit I got a zagg invisishield screen protector and it is awful. Wonder why they bothered ohh try money.

I dropped a galaxy S1 from about waist high onto concrete. it bounced about 5 times before come to rest face down.
The LCD screen under the glass was cracked into 20 different pieces. But the glass itself - not even a single scratch. You had to hold at it an angle to see the broken lcd pieces. So while the gorilla glass is strong, the screen inside itself is pretty flaky, so dont be droppin it!

Yeah Thats what I am talking about....The glass is like Pyrex...maybe even stronger. The interior parts are the issue with drops. That's where those thick soft silicone cases help out but I don't care for cases as the ones that could really protect the phone make it too bulky and the thin cases are a waste and only prevent scratches and nicks around the edges. I don;t worry about those. Never used the same phone for more than a couple years if that long. The back cover can be folded in half and if ever needed replaced easily.

Scratch resistant is not scratch proof. Drag anything harder than it across and it will scratch.

So you're saying out of the millions of devices produced, you got the ONE device without gorilla glass? I'd say it's much more likely it came into contact with sand or something similar.
And no, scratch resistant doesn't mean it can't be scratched. It means it's resistant to scratches, not impervious.

Sometimes it can be faulty. My Asus Transformer Prime had faulty gorilla glass, even the cleaning cloth that came with it caused scratches. Took it to Best Buy and the CSR who was trying to teach me to use a cleaning cloth scratched the screen. Got it rma'd and not a single scratch after 5 months. Luckily, my SGP screen protectors showed up today. I got it installed and am glad I was able to make it without any scratches. I know, sick dude.
I'm in the same boat as you. The first day I got my phone I got a scratch about an inch long and I wasn't carrying it around with me or anything cause I didn't activate it. I wanted to get a screen saver before I got it activated. So as soon as sprint gets some in stock I'm gonna take it in and see what they can do for me.

If you carry a phone in your pocket without protection, you're asking for trouble. You might go a long period of time with no problems, but all it takes is for one day, you have a grain of sand in your pocket and voila...a scratch.
