So i did do a search about this, but everyone else problem was from using a 3rd party app.
Im not using any 3rd party aps, but im getting a notification for receiving a sms, and then one telling me i have an unread sms, its annoying as hell, how can i stop this from happening, thanks.

If ur using a seccond app like hancent go into the stock messenger app and turn off notifications. If u meant that by third party then forget it

Hey guys, I wanted to see if any fellow vibrant uses have been getting this.
This is the second time this has happened to me. Just out of no where I will launch my sms application (handcent) and the all of my texts are gone, like magic....
I have done alot of looking and found out that this is an old problem that is general for any android user. Wanted to see if anyone know the solution to what is causing this.

This just happened to me recently. I also use handcent. I dont know if this is the case for you, but I am a packrat, so I had a lot of messages.
I think the limit of SMS messages that can be stored on the phone is 5,000. The only thing that didnt make any sense is that not ALL of my messages were gone, I had 8 left from a recent conversation. I cant explain why they werent deleted...
We can start narrowing things down though. If you dont think you reached the phones limit, then maybe it is a Handcent bug, or a bug with TouchWiz.
it use to happen to me before when i had i believe was the mytouch slide at that time but i cant recall. and yes it happened when i had over 3000+ for my GF and like around 200 for other people! Now i usually just get to 600 or less and delete it and start over. I use the stock sms app btw and have no problems at all.
It happened to me too, not the first or second time it have always happened from the start. I don't use handcent, everything is untouched with no root.

Hmmm...a few people claim that this stopped after they uninstalled the antivirus app. However, I never used this app so it can't mean that. On top of that, many claim that this was due to 3rd party app. That wouldn't make any sence because if uninstalling different apps will fix it.
A few also mentioned that installing the sms back up also stopped the problem. It was also mentioned that handcent has an update coming that said they would fix it but that was almost a year ago. I couldn't find anything on the handcent website that fixed the issue. A lot of android users have the same issue as us on their forum. There are at least 10+ posts on this topic, non with a solution....

Have you removed the settings to delete old messages when limits are reached?
or have u edited those settings in the messaging app?
That's the first thing I checked
it's unchecked, no limits and no deleting if old text messages. Here's the thing, even if that was enabled, it would only delete after reaching the limit and keep it at that. What happened was that all the text messages just disappeared...

This used to happen to me on the G1 on occasion. I got around the issue by using the CyanogenMod Messaging application and setting the auto-delete limit to 200 messages per person, and using the free SMS Backup application to export all SMS messages to a label Gmail as they're received. I'm still using the same solution on the Vibrant, and I've had no problems since.
I didn't think that cyanogenmod is available for the samsung vibrant yet...or am i missing something?

The CyanogenMod 5 (Android 2.1) Messaging app can be installed over the Vibrant's Messaging app just fine. Download a CM5.0.8 ROM for the Nexus One and install the Messaging.APK found in \system\data. :]
I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.

Ok, I tried looking online and even deleting the stock messaging app.
My problem is that everytime I receive a text message I receive the little envelope notification in the task bar. Even when I check my texts through this notification, it stays there until I actually press clear on all the notifications. This might be stupid to some, but it absolutely annoys me.
Someone please help.

What msg service r u using. If its 3rd party then u have to ho into stock app and tell iT in settings not to get notifications
I was just using stock and yes I unchecked everything in those settings, and unfortunately I kept receiving them.
Now I've deleted the stock messaging app, and now using the handcent third party app, but I'm still receiving the stock notification and a handcent one.... Is this a bug?
I'm rooted on stock rom.

You problem is deleting the stock messaging app. It still delivers the text through OS, even though the actual app is no longer present. You should have kept it and told it to ignore.
You have to go into your stock messaging app, tap menu, then go to settings. Once in there you need to find "auto-retrieve" and unchecked the box. Then find "notifications" and unchecked that box as well

Okay....so I wiped everything and reflashed cm7 and still its messed up

Sounds silly, but have you looked throug hal lthe Handcent settings?
Becasue all yea raeally need to do with stock is clear the show notifications box.
I finally gave up on third party mms apps and just run stock now. It's fine. I don't need balloons.

Sorry, a thousand people replied with the same thing, just thought I'd share.
http://www.handcent.com/Faq.php#TWO_MSG
I've seen instructions on xda for replacing touchwiz apps with the GS3, and it's been claimed that it's possible to delete the Samsung messaging app in favor of another sms app.
So I've frozen the Samsung messaging app on my SG4, and I've installed the jellybean build of Google's messaging app. But it doesn't quite work? I can successfully send sms messages (I'm on rogers) and I can receive sms messages if the sms message app is open. But when the app is closed and out of memory I don't get sms.
It gets stranger, though. When I thaw out the Samsung messaging app, I seem to get my sms' again, but in the Google messaging app. Which is sort of what I wanted, but I'm left wondering why the Google app can't work on its own.
Has anyone else tried this and gotten it to work?

Have you tried leaving the Samsung SMS app unfrozen, and simply turn off its notifications? Sometimes that's what you need to do in order for 3rd party SMS apps to work, because the background service is tailored for the OEM's app. So you have to let that retrieve the messages and save them to the SMS/MMS storage area, which other SMS apps can then retrieve the data from.
Although it is strange that the AOSP app isn't working. But it's worth a try.
Does anyone know how to fix this? I have to switch to stock messenger to see the pic and then when I go back to chomp it will then show.

Try handcent SMS. I've had problems with chomp in the past and always came back to handcent. The devs are really good about fixing any issues.

Try Textra...it's made by the same people, and it's fast, fluid, and completely replaced my stock messaging app (I can freeze the stock app with no issues). I've had no issues with MMS in it, like I have with most other 3rd party SMS apps.
+1 for textra I use it as my daily SMS app. I was having problems with other 3rd party SMS apps I would take a picture but it would only send sideways it was stupid with textra it doesn't do that and its light so it makes it fast.

+1 textra
OK, so I'm trying out textra and have made it my default SMS. I'm not receiving notifications or the pop up. I'm getting them in the stock messaging though. Am I doing something wrong? Help is appreciated. Thanks.

It's a common problem w chomp i fixed it like so...begin by whining your application cache for chomp and stock messenger. ..
Go to your mobile settings and copy the mms settings or whatever...then input those to the chomp app...i also had to enable in the stock messenger "auto retrieve mms"....then in chomp disable that feature that says something like b preserve resolution"... Once all is done reboot and have someone send you a pic. It should work. Give it a few hours i knew mine wouldn't work right away but now it's golden.
No Textra Notification
This happened to me as well. I found that if I have any additional third party SMS apps besides Textra installed, then Textra will not notify me of a new message. Also check your stock messaging app and make sure notifications are turned off there as well.

I.tried all the suggestions and in the end nothing worked so I jumped ship to Sliding Messenger, which does fine with pics.

Lucky you, I've never gotten Sliding Messaging to fully work with MMS, no matter what combination of settings I've tried. It's the reason I jumped ship to Textra (although to be honest I've been using Hangouts for my SMS lately...the only features I'm really missing are the pop-up replies and dark theme).

It disgust me that there are messaging apps that don't support popup on Android these days especially hangouts
For those of you that have migrated to Hangouts for SMS or some other 3rd party app and like to disable/freeze apps that come preinstalled on the phone. If you freeze/disable the default android messaging app you will loose the ability to have quick sms responses while receiving a phone call.
Figured I let you know.

I think you may have changed the default application for quick sms to the default messaging. And it;s still looking for that. Try this.
1. Unfreeze messaging app
2. Go to app info for messaging
3. Clear defaults
4. Try this with the phone app as well just in case.
5. Check to see it worked.
