It seems I can't backup my ROM. When I click "Backup current ROM" my DX just reboots.
I had the same problem and how I fixed it was used koush bootrap and after that I was able to use ROM Manager. Thanks
Ok, so I got koush's bootstrapper, launched it and phone has reboooted and started to backup. I can't tell if it's using the clockwork or koush to backup though.

It uses clockwork to backup and koush to hijack the boot init process

To use the backup feature in ROM Manager: Go to koush's bootsrap 1st and bootstrap recovery, then go to ROM Manager and select "Backup Current ROM." It will then reboot in recovery and start the backup process.
Couple things. Koush = Koushik Dutta, Developer of Clockworkmod Recovery, Rom Manager, and DX/D2 BootStrapper.
If you try to only use Rom Manager it WILL ONLY REBOOT. That's because you have to use the BootStrapper to "hijack" the boot. It creates "/data/.recovery_mode" and prevents "/system" from mounting and running on reboot. Only then should it go into recovery when you reboot. After you are done, and are rebooted back in to the GUI, the BootStrapper app looks for "/data/.recovery_mode" and deletes it, if it exists. That way when you turn off or reboot the phone, you don't go back into recovery every time. This is also why you have to Bootstrap Recovery every time you want to do something with the Clockworkmod Recovery, e.i. nandroid, install new ROM, or restore a backup.
Will bootstrap work for Motorola Bravo?
Used Superoneclick to root the device and downloaded ClockworkMod...I get the reboot at Backup current rom, too. I see that I need to install Bootstrapper but wonder if it'll work for Bravo.

But theres something a little devious about the fact that i already paid for his ROM Manager which has an option to backup, but doesnt actually back anything up, until you pay more money for a bootstrap utility to accompany the cwm app you already paid for!!

It's not shady, it's not the developers fault, the locked bootloader forces a hijack process hat the boostrap application puts in place. There's plenty of places that you can get the boostrap app for free; also, I believe that in the ROM Manager description it states that you must use one of the bootstrap applications.

So I got my Droid X in the mail yesterday, it came with Froyo. I rooted it as well.
So next would I get Bootstrap for Droid X boot make backup?
Then Deodox?
Then install ROM Manager so I can install thems, icons, fonts, etc.?
Im wanting to have a backup in its original state.
Been trying to read up but theres so much Im getting a bit lost.

Yeah, get the bootstrap and rom manager, make a backup, then you can apply roms and themes. If something goes wrong or you just don't like it you can restore your backup. Flash the custom recovery in rom manager, then use the bootstrap, click bootstrap recovery and then reboot recovery and you will be in clockwork recovery.

Ok I got the bootstrap, I made a backup then reboot. I got rom manager and installed the mod that it asks.
To be organized, is there a specific folder I need to put my themes and roms in or can i just create my own and go from there?
And Im assuming if I want to go back to OEM I just restore from my backup correct?

Yes.. you can put your themes in whatever folder you like... but if you download them from rom manager... it puts them where it wants.

What if I get a rom and want tho throw a theme on top of it? How do i go about doing this? I know i can install the rom from rom manager. How do I do the theme? Also how do I change the system font and dock icons?
Most cases reboot recovery, mounts and storage, mount system (turns to unmount) install zip, choose zip. Always check were you downloaded to make sure there isn't any extra steps

I have downloaded both of these? The only difference I see is rom manager allows you to download roms, backup, restore, etc, from within the android OS.
Is that the only difference and they are essentially the same thing?
You need the bootstrap recovery to boot into Koush's recovery on the DX. You can't get there from the Rom Manager alone. You may be able to boot into Koush's recovery from Rom Manager if you have the bootstrap recovery installed, but you definitely need the bootstrap recover installed.

Its this really true?? Cause i remember i use to have the rom manager only and i could install roms themes etc...i am saying i rememner cause right now i am using a droid 2 no rooted everyyhing stock i am waiting for mg replacement my dear droid x....

All I use is Koush's DroidX recovery NEVER had a issue.To me a ROM Manager is a duplication of efforts to a point.
Koush's tool is a must have ....
On my X, if I want to use Rom Manager to backup, restore, install a new Rom, I need to use the DroidX Bootstrap to apply the bootstrap, then Rom Manager can do it's thing

So I accidently flashed CW Recovery before I used bootstrap and now I can't boot into CW Recovery or create a backup. Any ideas?
Ive searched all over the place, Ive found some threads that describe what each do, but I guess Im just trying to understand the whole picture. I have the Bootstrap program on my phone, I also have Rom Manager (Im rooted and have SuperUser also.)
I guess where Im confused at is what to do with each of them.
On other phones Ive just went through Rom Manager, Flashed CW Recovery, created a backup then I was up and running.
Do I need to do this before running bootstrap, do I run bootstrap first?
Sorry for the rookie question, I guess this boot strap thing has me confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated
You have to use the bootstrap to get into clockwork recovery, run the first option in bootstrap, it should say "success" then use rom manager or the reboot recovery option. You need to do the bootstrap option every time you want to go to custom recovery.

I flashed CW recovery before I hit bootstrap. Shows I have the current Recovery Image
If I hit "reboot into recovery" through Rom manager it doesnt do anything. If I hit "bootstrap recovery" through droid x bootstrapper it says success, but when i hit reboot recovery it doesnt do anything either...
power+home button on power up just brings me to stock recovery screen..
im lost
Try running the first option in bootstrapper again, same with reflashing clockwork... rom manager can boot to recovery.

Would it have anything to do with me having the official 2.3.15 update already on my phone? Its rooted of course but even when I click S.U it opens up but its just a blank black screen and says S.U permissions at the top

something is wrong with your root. try to re-root your phone the first time you run bootstrapper and rom manager you need to give them permission and it looks like you haven't yet so they can't work right. redo your root and it should solve your issues. also i find i need to bootstrap recovery before each time i try to use rom manager. kinda a pain i use recovery from bootstrap more often as its the same thing.
So even though Im rooted with the stock 2.2 I need to re-root it? Like just download a one-click-root and do it all over?
Should I factory reset before I do this?
The thing is I got the phone from a friend and it already had S.U on it, I just dont know what program he used to root it and what not...neither does he.

I re-did the root with that and now it lets me boot into CW recovery! Your the man! Do you have paypal by any chance =) I'll gladly shoot you a tip!
I'm trying to make a nandroid backup so I can mess with my droid 2 but having issues...
The phone is rooted.
Have Installed: Rom Manager and Droid 2 Bootstrapper - both 'green' in superuser permissions.
When I try to boot into recovery mode using Rom Manager (trying to make a backup) or the D2 Bootstrapper the phone just boots up as it normally would. I can get into the default recovery mode by using the 'X' and 'PWR' key combo but that's not what I need.
Have tried renaming these files as suggested here in another thread and reflashing clockworkmod but that didn't work.
EDIT: can't link so these are the two files:
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
Any ideas?

I've never used ROM manager because koush's D2 bootstrap does everything you need. But if you don't get clockwork from the application make sure you are properly rooted and you press "bootstrap recovery" and get the "success" box before you press "reboot recovery".

My friend is using Rom manager. He installed CWM via rom manager. Do you think it is safe for him to get "Koush's D2 bootstrap" and re-install CWM that way? Will that break anything?
PS: I use Amon_Ra's recovery on my nexus one. I do all my installations via ADB but he is not comfortable using ADB. I'm just trying to get him into a stable custom recovery because ever since he installed clockwork (which is not working) he says the phone is really slow.

I don't know installing koush's bootstrap will do but the D2 has to be bootstrapped because it's locked down and normal Clockwork Mod won't work because of it. If it doesn't work and his phone isn't working he can just SBF with the 2.3.2 version (he probably has the update already) he can do it in linux or windows (linux is easier) and it will put him back to stock so he can install koush's bootstrap from the market after re-rooting it.
If he want's he can back up his contacts and applications with google and data with titanium backup.

I've been trying to help a friend flash ROM's to his X. We've installed the paid Bootstrap and Rom Manager. We then utilized the bootstrap utility, and flashed clockworkmod recovery. We then go to the Download rom section of Rom Manager and choose FlyX, it downloads, we then check backup current rom, and wipe data, continue. The phone attempts to boot into clockworkmod but wont. It does the update package part, fails, and then reboots normally. I should also note that when I attempt to boot into clockworkmod recovery via bootstrap it is successful. Could I find the downloaded Rom via the menu in clockworkmod and install it that way? Is there a step in installing Clockworkmod that I'm missing? I've been checking the forums but all I can find for solutions is people saying to install bootstrap again. I've uninstalled and reinstalled both programs twice and nothing has changed. Thanks so much in advance for the help.
open rom manager and click on flash clockworkmod recovery.
everything you download with rom manager goes into the /clockworkmod/download folder on your mem card.

You need to open up Bootstrap and select the top option... then you can proceed to Rom Manager.......Rom Manager cannot flash CW onto the DroidX that why we need Koush's Droidx Bootstrapper. Give that a try also Note i hope that you have booted into CW and made a Nandroid backup of your friends current phone state.. If that still doesnt work for you.. download the ROM off a forum and do it manually.

YOu need to download Koush bootstrap http://koush.tandtgaming.com//motorola/droidx/DroidXBootstrap.apk
So after I gain root, I open Bootstrap? I then hit the "Bootstrap Recovery" button? Then I open Rom Manager and click "flash the latest ClockworkMod Recovery", which I beleive is 2.5.0.7? Do I hit the "Reboot Recovery" button in Bootstrap after I flash the latest CW recovery?
