Tons of articles on it, but here is one anyways:

My question is: Since I already have the T-Mobile G1 unlocked and using it on Rogers, I wonder if they're either going to support the frequency of 3G that my phone supports, or if the Rogers G1 will have the different frequency. Hope they release more details soon so I know if I should sell this one to grab one that I can actually get 3G on :S
Any thoughts?
I wonder pow much they'll rape yu for data charges.
I used to live in Vancouver, and know what a rip-off data charges are up there.

** this says that rogers has the 1700/2100 AWS spectrum in Canada. Presumably, the Dream and Sapphire (there is no such thing as a "G1" -- this is a TMOBILE-ONLY rebranding of the Dream) launch will coincide with the enablement of this network.
Oh, you'll note how much they paid for AWS.... "In total, Rogers will pay $999,367,000."
heh heh... nearly a billion smackers, but they've got 20 MHz in all areas of the country.
no, rogers is 850/1900. so im hoping i can get it on AT&T 3G. that would be so awesome

You, I'm sorry to say, are an IDIOT.
If you would actually read the whole thread, you would see that no, Rogers also owns rights to a 20 MHz spread of the 1700/2100 AWS band as well, which they will presumably be launching with the Dream. Why pay a BILLION DOLLARS for something if you're not going to USE IT?
True
So June 2nd G1 from T-Mobile can use 3G ?!
what about fido?!
I'm waiting for $30/6GB data plan
its like... almost unlimited
nothings for sure yet...
either rogers will start running the new band that t-mobile runs, or the devices have a different radio compatible to rogers' current 3g band
update: seems like the Canadian HTC Dream will run on AT&T / Rogers 3G bands:

the 3G wont work with the tmobile version. different bands for 3G.
Just a curious question, is there a possibility that an HTC Sapphire/Magic from Rogers will work on AT&T's network?

I can confirm that it will work on AT&T's 3G coz I'm using it in NYC
so its not locked??? cuz i tried it with the fido sim and it worked....
Apparently
I read that pretty much all current HTC GSM devices from Europe and Asia do indeed work on American 3G networks. For the longest time we were tricked into thinking the HTC Touch HD only worked on American Edge networks. However, a recent document released by HTC proves that it does have support for American 3G bands. I am waiting for the HTC hero to come out for ORANGE. At which point I will drop the big bucks to get it early.
Thats incorrect. the Touch HD papers were before the phone was even released, so those specs were never real. 3G networks in europe uses 2100 whereas at&t in the US uses 850/1900 3G bands. Not compatible.
But Rogers in canada uses the same exact bands as at&t usa. So you will have 3G in america. (Afterall Rogers used to be "Rogers at&t"
internet spazed, double posted. Someone plz delete this post.
I'm on Rogers HTC Magic too on AT&T in California, 3G works fine. You just need to sim unlock it and you're good to go.
Same thing. 3G AT&T in California.
can you guys see all paid apps including documents to go by dataviz? I just purchased a unlocked rogers magic and I can only see some paid apps but not all? Can one of you guys check your appstore? Thanks

It's locked in the ROM it looks like, because not even market enabler lets me see everything.
Can you see "documents to go" by dataviz on your unlocked rogers magic (not rooted)?

Rooted or no. It's not showing up because Rogers locked down the market a bit through the ROM on the phone.

That sucks, so I guess a true sim unlocked phone (not rooted) would have full access to paid apps unless as you are saying rogers has limited the paid apps through the rom.
I was able to purchase copilot today. It seems very strange that I could buy copilot but can't see documents to go.
Is there anyway to remove this lock down on the market? If rogers releases a update to open up the market will our phone get this update?

from my understanding market enabler would work if you root. The downside of rooting is than losing access to copyright protected apps.

sorry to necro a bit on this one.
I just picked up the google ION and I also have AT&T cell service (in southern NJ).
So far I have only been able to use edge connections, I have yet to see 3G kick in. I checked the AT&T coverage map and I should be soaked in 3G so Im curious if there are any settings/tweaks I can apply to activate 3G on the ION.
I can confirm that the ION has the proper radios (850/1900) just like the rogers version of the magic.
I would absolutely love to have 3G enabled on this phone so any info would be greatly appreciated.
For reference, the only APN i have set up is wap.cingular (ive looked at many other lists but this is the only one I got to work with data [edge]... this is the only one tech support from ATT gave me that worked as well).
Thanks!

Thats right, it has the right radio frequencies for EDGE. The Ion has 1700/2100 3G bands and there is absolutely no way to get ATT 3G as the frequencies are hard coded into the hardware. Switch to Tmobile if you want 3G on the Ion as it is essentially a MyTouch 3G

ahhh, so just having the supported bands is not enough, it has to be on the correct specific radio? ive been googling my ass off about this and thats the first concrete response/piece of information ive seen. many thanks.
in light of that information, would I be able to pick up a rogers magic and have it work with ATT 3G then? From what ive read here it appears that the rogers magic has 850/1900 as its 3G radio, correct?
looks like im going to have to put this ion back on ebay, ugh.
yah if you get a rogers magic then you will be good.
I want hero/g2 touch, i am a us t-mobile customer (nyc) where can i get an for how much? Should i buy from another country an will it work here? If i buy the sprint one an unlock it will i be able to use ti i dunno what to do i just want the phone somebody how to obtain it an get it working with my t-mobile account also tell me the price....PLZ AND THANK YOU
Anybody wanna help me?

hey vonne thats cool but i never heard of them are they a wireless company? i much rather buy an unlock or do some of the things i said in the original message
you can buy unlocked phones off ebay. i sell some there. if you buy the Sprint I don't think it will work on Tmobile even if you unlock it because Sprint uses CDMA and Tmobile is GSM. If you buy an unlocked GSM phone it should work on Tmobile. I had a different unlocked GSM phone while i was in the US this summer and it worked fine.
ok csasek but im talking bout the hero/ G2 touch not any other phone i jus want that one there so many smart people that hav info on this phone an none can help me?
the only place you can get it unlocked is on ebay for about $550, and yes it will work in the US...any other specific questions
You are aware that the G2 Touch will not work with 3G in the US? If you buy one, you will be restricted to EDGE at best. As has been already stated, the Sprint Hero can never work with T-Mobile US at all.
Regards,
Dave

why doesn't the Hero work with US 3G? what frequencies/technology do ATT & Tmobile us for 3G? I thought that Tmobile was using WCDMA/ HSDPA which should be compatible and that ATT uses HSDPA too.
I honestly don't know what all these things mean so if you could provide some insight I would really appreciate it. Since I sell these on ebay I like to be able to answer these types of questions.

Yes they do, but the important thing here is that these services can be offered over several different frequencies.
The "worldwide" Hero (as opposed to the Sprint one) only supports 3G (HSPA/WCDMA) at 900Mhz and 2100Mhz.
http://www.htc.com/www/product/hero/specification.html
T-Mobile US's 3G network runs at 1700MHz, and ATT's 3G at 1900MHz. Neither of these 3G bands are supported by the radio in the GSM Hero, so you are stuck with 2G/EDGE speeds.
Regards,
Dave
Thank you very much for the explanation
im sure there is a radio update in the development section somewhere???
this would alow US users to have 3G but they would require root in order to flash the new radio
There is no radio ROM update at present which will make US 3G bands available, and there is no evidence as yet that this is a ROM and not a hardware restriction.
If I were interested in pursuing this further, I'd probably enquire in the Magic forums if it possible to flash a MyTouch 3G radio onto a European Magic to get 3G working with T-Mobile US.
Regards,
Dave
So what phone should i get? the out of staste on with chin? or the sprint one? dont care for looks cuz im ok with both jus sayin most price efficient and easier to unlock

I bought a used N1 on eBay. I totally wasn't even thinking about the fact that there are different models of the phone for different carriers. Turns out I have the T-Mobile N1, but I have AT&T service currently.
I assume that there is no kind of mod/firmware to get it to use AT&T 3G, and that it's the hardware that limits me to T-Mo? Probably more than some custom firmware or something could fix?
That kind of sucks, if so. I doubt anyone would have an AT&T model, looking for a T-Mo model, eh?
Thanks for any help, if it's even possible..
Have you looked at the seller's return policy?
No returns accepted, as stated on the item page.
I can live with it (in remorse)..
The seller didn't mention what model it was at all, either.
I don't suppose Verizon uses the same bands as T-Mo?

No, they don't. T-Mobile and Verizon use totally different radio technologies.
Go onto the Marketplace forum on XDA, and trade/sell it through there.
Put your sim card in it
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Post it for sale locally on craigslist to finance a unit with the AT&T radio.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Also if you have trouble locating the AT&T compatible N1, you may also consider the Telus version of HTC Desire. Largely the same hardware, AT&T bands, but no Euro 2100 band.
Possible bonus: AT&T does not know the IMEI of Telus Androids, and might not force you to a higher cost smart phone data plan.
Thanks for your input, guys.
I'll try first to sell it locally via Craigslist.
I really think that it will be much more difficult
since they discontinued the Nexus One, and provided it through the developers only,
it has always been the T-Mobile version which is quite disappointing....
the AT&T version seem to just disappear from manufacturing all together
point I am trying to make is that it the AT&T version should be much rarer and possibly worth more on the market since there are less quantities of it
it sucks my friend I feel for you...
How is the T-Mobile N1 different from AT&T model?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Different radio frequencies and limited availability. Otherwise identical.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I've done the exact opposite...got myself an ATT N1 while on tmobile...hahaha
hahah. I've since sold my T-Mo N1 on eBay and bought an AT&T N1 from Craigslist.. got a sweet deal, too!
wait wait a sec
If you Unlock the S off on the nexus one Tmobile. You can use a At&t sm card with out a problem. I UnloCked the S off ON the mytouch 4g AND IT works on At&t s network. HMMMM. Wondering if it works.

Yes, it will function on the network. The issue is that the radio hardware is built for specific frequencies, which differ between the T-Mobile and AT&T models.
You can use one phone on the other's network just fine as a phone, but you will be limited to 2G data speeds, as AT&T uses 850/1900MHz for their 3G data and T-Mobile uses 900 1700/2100MHz.
Umm, nobody uses 900 MHz for cellular in North America... that spectrum is not allocated for that purpose here.

You're right, my apologies. The fact of the matter (that the hardware is incompatible between the AT&T and T-Mobile networks) remains intact though.
Correct 3G data frequency information, as best I can make it out:
AT&T uses 850MHz and 1900MHz.
T-Mobile uses 1700MHz and 2100MHz.
900MHz and 2100MHz are used primarily in Europe; a phone made for European markets will have a better chance of being fully compatible with T-Mobile's network in the states based on sharing the 2100MHz band.
Closer but still not quite
Read up on the AWS band. European phones will not get T-Mobile 3G at all without 1700.
But in the specific case of the Nexus One, models sold in Europe do have AWS.

I just got the mytouch 4g and i wanted to sell my nexus one. But i wanted to double check and see if i can sell it to someone on the at&t network. I currently have tmobile. I thought the S-Off was to completely unlock the phone. So u can switch between carriers. Didnt know the frequency would be different. thank guyz. Damn u HTC.

What kind of shape is your T-Mobile N1 in?
I'm actually in the process of switching to T-Mobile, and I have an ATT model that I would potentially be interested in trading, but it's definitely not mint.
hello, i just bought a week ago and htc g2/ vision, had it unlocked so i can have another sim card thats not tmobiles in.
i live in el salvador and my carrier is tigo and calls are perfectly fine and all but data connections are only edge! and i have no idea why??? i also have a x10 mini and i use the same apn and it connects to 3g
anyone know why and how to fix it?

Did you check to make sure what GSM frequencies the carrier uses (sorry not familiar with El Salvador)? This sounds very similar to people trying to use G2's on AT&T / iPhones on T-mobile. Not all GSM carriers use the same frequencies for their service. If voice is working, but 3G data is not, this is very likely the issue. For example, AT&T operates both 2g and 3g on 850/1900, whereas T-mobile operates 2g on 850/1900 and 3G on 1700/2100; hence why voice and Edge can work, but 3G cannot.
Poking around a little, the X10 mini world phone version has an 850/900/1800/1900 for edge and 1900/2100 frequency radio for 3G data connection, although there are AT&T versions with slightly different bands too, which you may have I'm not sure.
The G2 runs on T-mobile in the US and has a 850/900/1800/1900 for edge and 1700/2100 radio for 3G data.
All according to Wikipedia from what I can scrounge up right now.
BTW I feel proud that I did this research lol. Enlightening.

If Tigo doesn't run 1700/2100 3g, there isn't anything you can do short of selling your G2 and buying a European Desire Z (same as G2) with the proper frequencies assuming you want the same type of phone. Shoulda checked this out lol just cuz it has a SIM slot doesn't mean it "just works" haha. sorry!

Just how hard is it to have a G2 world phone? Can you add all possible bands?
I believe that the Canadian/European Desire Z is the world phone edition which carries band support for all GSM bands. It is the USA T-Mobile G2 that carries support for the GSM bands specifically for the US market. Correct me if I am wrong.
