[Q] Which US carrier tab to be used in Canada - Galaxy Tab General

HI there, first, thanks everyone for sharing such great info about the galaxy tab.
I got some quick questions here, did search before posting but did not find so sorry if it's been asked already.
I'm looking to get a US tab and was wondering which US carrier tab is most suited to be used on Bell's network?
Also, I've seen a lot of tabs with bad ESN going for great price on eBay... if I get one from US and try to use it here in Canada on Bell's network...will they work fine?
Cheers!

ATT is the ONLY US provider compatible with Bell 3G, don't buy a Tab from anyone except ATT, Bell or Rogers. The Bell Tab is 550$ right now off contract, pretty sweet deal.

This man speaks the truth. ATT is the only carrier that's completely compatible with Canadian carriers (with some minor 900/850 MHZ band bickering) Tmobile uses AWS (Of which the Canadian equivalent is Wind Mobile) and Sprint/Verizon are both using the archaic CDMA system.
Oddly enough both Telus & Bell were on CDMA (and *technically* still support it, but that's a serious grey area) up until a year ago. Rogers has been GSM for a good while now.

rogers magic

First post from my new Rogers magic. Thought I would start a thread for Rogers users to discuss it. So far I'm loving the form factor compared to the g1!
Haven't rooted yet...
Thanks for the report. Could you confirm which umts band it has? Do you think if it will compatible with ATT and TMO-US's networks? Thanks.

Here you go: GSM/GPRS/EDGE Bands: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
HSPA/UMTS Dual-Band: 850/1900 MHz
Best choice I think would be ATT for the 850 band (I think ATT is on 850?) It will work on Tmobile, but I'm not sure you would have 3G. Obviously being from Canada I'm not as familiar with their spectrums, but I'm sure someone else can confirm.
Same form factor as my HTC Ion.
It will have AT&T 3G since Rogers uses the same bands (850 and 1900).
T-Mobile customers have to wait until the Magic to be launched here in the States.

Sweet. Just ordered mine on-line, a little disappointing they only had the Black Magic to choose from.
Congrats!
So is there a website for people living in the U.S. to order a Rogers Magic, or is the Rogers branded Magic only available in Canada?

Only available in Canada but you could probably find them on eBay or howardforums B/S/T.
Ok, so if you find a retailer that has the Roger's Magic, would it be unlocked or specifically branded to Rogers, to where you would have to get an unlock code?

I THINK, but don't quote me on this, that if you root the device you should be able to use it on other networks that use the same frequencies. I'm happy to be corrected if that's not the case...
Dang, so I take it...it comes locked specifically for Rogers only? The last thing I want to do is root my $600 phone and probably...knowing my luck...f*ck it up LOL

Just wait... THere will be enterprising ppl to figure out how to unlock it.
Yea I found two websites that sell the unlocked Vodafone version, IMPORTGSM.com and Timtechs.com but do not know how "GOOD" they are. I also just got an email from Rogers.com stating that their phones do come "locked"....ugh T-mobile USA needs to get on this phone already lol.
T-Mobile will release this within the next 3 weeks (end of June or early July). If you want to take advantage of T-Mobile US 3G, wait for the T-Mobile US version or get the Google Ion.
The Rogers HTC Magic is perfect for AT&T users since it has AT&T 3G bands.
Thanks backviet, read your answer over on howards also. I guess i will just have to wait, like you mentioned.....dang!
Yeah, just got mine as well. Things are looking good so far. Only bad spot is, is the exchange activesync that apparently doesnt work (not sure if it's some sort of extension that is needed...there's not much info on it). Anyone else get a problem synching up exchange and getting a "Failed to create the account" Error?
Going to try to solve that later today...
that's strange...i work at a rogers store and as i was playing with a magic today, and i had no problem connecting to our exchange server. you would think that both are running the same software so exchange support would be the same.
we're sold out of magic's so i won't be able to try it out till we get more.
i'm actually thinking about picking one up as well, although i'm not 100% sold on it, it's def. a much nicer device than the dream, at least imo.
Multimedia
Hey guys, just picked up my Magic yesturday from Rogers and loving it. So much fun. Now I am wondering how do we upload pictures and music and videos onto our phone? I plugged it to my PC but unable to access the MicroSD card. Is there a program manager that needs to be downloaded first? Thanks

AT&T Galaxy Tab

I am on AT&T for the main reason that I travel frequently to Europe and Asia (Japan, Hong Kong) and it's the carrier who happens to have devices with 3G bands compatible nearly worldwide (Even though I don't like so much the price AT&T is costing me...)
So... really considering now to switch to the Galaxy tab and say good bye to my good old TP2 (heavily overclocked so still with a bit of life in it !)
I have a few questions
1. there are rumors here and there saying the Tab for AT&T wont have the front facing camera (And then some other places where it's listed as a spec of the AT&T tab). Anybody can confirm / infirm this ? (Would be really pissed to pay such a price for the device if it has been castrated)
2. AT&T is the last US carrier not to have announced a launch date for the tab... (Maybe it's willing to be a bit nice to Apple and its recently commercialized iPad, or maybe it's just an old and slow company...). Pure speculation: is there a chance we'll be able to switch the tab bands from T-Mobile like some have successfully done with other Samsung phones from the galaxy family ?
3. Another pure speculation: has Samsung actually disabled the hardware for voice calls on the US versions ? I hope his will be solved by flashing another firmware. Otherwise I'll just end up buying an international version (Which will be much more expensive...)
You can get the unlocked north american version which should be out by next week. It will cost you an arm and a leg but WILL work with the 850/1900 at&t 3g bands. Here are a few sites that have it:

or
http://negrielectronics.com/samsung-p1000-galaxy-tab-3g-850-1900-2100-oem-unlocked.html
Hope this helps.

Thanks. Yes these bands are AT&T ones. Though waiting a few more weeks should allow to get it directly from AT&T at a lower price...
The good news is, if the websites are correct about the specs, the front facing camera is there (And I doubt Samsung will make a different Tab)
Seem to imply the voice call work to (negrielectronics) but it could be a mistake or a trick (works only through skype...) or just simple taht we are talking about an overseas model with the right 3G bands

What concerns me are the comments that suggest US carriers will somehow restrict their service to GT so only data will work (no voice). So that raises the question for those of us who get the unlocked version - how do we get our Gt on to ATT or others? I guess I'm asking which ATT phone is it close enough to that I can acuire and swap the SIM card?

Well, from what I hear is the 850/1900 band version will be an unlocked north amaerican version which can work with rogers (Canada) and at&t for the US by just adding your SIM card in. It is unknow weather the at&t network will identify the galaxy tab and change your plan accordingly if that is even how it will work with at&t. I beleive they WILL have a different plan for data for this device as T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon are following this. Also, the at&t version WILL be a different model in appreance and features as this unlocked one will not. Probablly because at&t WILL remove the front camera and who knows what else (thanks to the iphone). That is why the samsung site has not put the at&t version on their site yet. really do hope it will be treated as a PDA phone thru at&t's network (for the unlocked version)

That's funny as they told me last Friday that the warehouse in CA is expecting them on November 10th. Also, I work near the mobile city online store in NYC and stopped in there and they said this week they would have them. hmmm
UPDATE: Just sent a message to my contact @ Nergi. He said they just received the notice that this version of the tab will not be in till early 2011. You were right clubtech... Was hoping you were wrong.. lol That sucks!
Mmh all I have been reading so far sucks
Figured I would fire up this thread and bump it up as Bell is releasing the Galaxy Tab on November 12th. That will be our solution for the 850/1900 3G version I guess..? I sent a message to Nergi to see if they will have this version. I'll keep you posted.
I have my G-Tab now (Euro version with phone and data working great on AT&T in USA) Be glad to answer questions. General comment: I LOVE it! The form factor and wt are just right for me and it has all the features I miss on my iPad. Only criticism is that I find Android a bit less stable than IOS but that might be what Gingerbread or Honeycomb will address.

Are you getting good 3g coverage? I see your in PA... Close to me. I know the 1900 band does blanket this area to some degree but the 850 band is alot stronger. I think I may wait for a full 3g band with both 850/1900 bands. Seems like the bell version will be the answer to that. Glad to hear you love the device.
I read that the bell version can't make any phone calls fyi .

Yes the 3g coverage is fine in the Reading area (better than my iphone, not sure why) I made decision to go for the Eur version when it became apparent the ATT version would be limited to data (no phone) and I couldn't get an answer on whether the "North American" version (with 850 UMTS) would arrive with phone capability OK. I saw a map of ATT 1900 coverage and saw that it takes care of at least 75% of the US, including virtuall all of the East, so I'm comfortable with my decision.

Yes that's my hope. It's also probably a sign the AT&T one must be around the corner

US version on European 3G Networks

Hey Everyone,
So I live in Germany but I will be visiting the USA for Thanksgiving weekend. I am contemplating buying the Tab for $550 at Best Buy on black Friday. So if I find it worth it, should I get the Sprint or T-Mobile one? Or can I even use either of them unlocked so I can use 3G with my German Fonic SIM card (I think it uses the O2 networks)?
Thanks
T-Mobile US and AT&T are your only options. You will have to SIM unlock them.
Sprint and Verizon use their own wireless transmission protocol that is, with a few exceptions, incompatible with the rest of the world. In particular, no SIM card
The biggest issue you will find is the lack of phone functionality on the US models.
You should however be able to flash a Euro firmware, and it's quite likely that you get both phone and 3G data on a European network. I couldn't definitively state that this is the case though!
Caveat Emptor!
Regards,
Dave
OK, so you think I would be able to get T-Mobile version, and it should work with the 3G connections in Europe? And if so, can I easily unlock it and put in my SIM card as I have done with other American smartphones I use here?
Thanks
I think you're better of getting the AT&T Tab since it will have the UMTS 850, 1900, 2100 bands, EU uses the 2100, you will have to flash the eu rom on it though... Wait, the TMO Tab also has 2100... IDK someone will have to chime in...
Here's a comparison of the US models and the international Tab:

You might double check.... cus based on my local store and the best buy website... they are only selling Verizon and Sprint tabs... I don't think the will be selling Tmos, according to a Best Buys rep.
But of course Tmo should have them in stock...
If the standard Euro Tab is available in your airport departure lounge, you should be able to pick one up on your outward bound journey VAT free. It might still be more expensive than a US one, but not by much (assuming they are priced similarly to the UK) and would probably be a better bet all round.
Regards,
Dave

[Q] Prospective buyer, ?'s on the variant options

Hi everyone -
Have been on here quite frequently for my SGSIIE4GT, but it's been a while since I've posted. I'm in the market for a new phone, and I think I will be going with the Note 3. However, boy am I confused on which model is the right fit for me. I could really use some help and a little insight, as the reps at AT&T, TMO, VZN, and Samsung Live Chat haven't been able to answer my questions.
I'm currently with Sprint, and looking to leave. I would be using the Note 3 near San Francisco 90-95% of the time, but I do travel 6-7x/yr to Asia, Canada, UK, and South America. I'm pretty sure I will buy the phone on no contract and use with TMO, AT&T, Straight Talk, or AIO. I've been reading some issues with "region locks" though that scare me a bit, not sure if this is still an issue with the models sold in the US.
From what I can see, ATT, TMO, VZN, and Sprint all have their own "versions" of the phone. ATT and TMO obviously use the same cell tech (GSM), so I don't understand why they have different versions. The VZN and Sprint versions would run on CDMA, which as I understand, won't do me any good if I travel overseas due to no CDMA elsewhere. Then there's the int'l unlocked versions, and the Developer edition. But then I heard just yesterday that the VZN Note 3 works on GSM (somehow, haven't figured that out though).....is there a SIM card slot in that version? After all that, I guess what I'm looking for is this which I could use some insight on:
Want to use the phone:
-with LTE using ATT/TMO/ST/AIO/VZN here in the U.S.
-want to buy off contract
-do not want bloatware...so do I need to buy unlocked?
-need to have it functional still if I go out of the country and purchase a local SIM card (some people ask me exactly which service I use overseas, and I don't have an answer b/c I haven't done this yet, my Sprint phone didn't even give me the option)
Which model is appropriate for that type of use? I read on Amazon that TMO's version is the best one out there b/c the ATT model doesn't work on TMO, but TMO's works on TMO and ATT.....
Thanks so much for your time. Samsung has really confused me with this phone, and could really just use some suggestions. Thanks again!

I would think international n9005 would be the one for you i know it will cover all Europe and i know it works on u.s t mobile, so have a look into that one
Hope that helps a bit
The 9005 will work in all other countries pretty much.
In the US it might work on tmobile as stated above but I'm not sure about the others.

Thanks guys. I have seen the N9005 tossed around a few times as well. I think the constant question I keep having is I see this phone made with the SD800 or the Exynos chip....but not which models have which chipset. I found the 9005 on Negiri in 32gb and the SD800....but if it works on tmobile why wouldn't it work on ATT? I thought they run the exact same tech.....no?

Awesome news, thanks.
Do you know if the Note 3 Developer Edition for Verizon, which works on their LTE network, comes with a SIM card slot that I can utilize if I go overseas? Boy, that would be ideal. I checked out the manual (http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...ual_MI9_F5.pdf) and it shows a SIM slot for the phone, no?
I was told by one of the writers at Droid Life that the Verizon N3 can be used on GSM. I thought that was impossible.
I seriously apologize if these are elementary questions, I truly do appreciate any insight. Just don't want to make a huge financial mistake.
Does anyone knows how to activate ltr on my note 3 ?? It is on by default and cannot access it from the settings thank you

Thanks for the input guys/gals. Really appreciate it. I went to Best Buy after work last night and talked with the Samsung tech rep. Turns out, the VZN Note 3 comes factory unlocked (per FCC law), and it has a sim card slot so I can use it on GSM if I travel overseas. One and done. I already put my name on the backorder list for the developer edition from Samsung so I can be sure to have functionality to remove bloatware. Wouldn't it be cool if the Note 3 could just come with 4.3 and Samsung's additions, but not any of Verizon's garbage??? I know, pipe dream.

Whoa, so it's a good thing I didn't buy the DE Note 3 yet and just on backorder. Just read - Verizon doesn't allow 4G phones to go prepaid? That makes no sense, because then the DE Note 3 would then be nothing but a paperweight since it must be purchased at full price (meaning, you could only then use it prepaid, no?). I do value Verizon's network, but their prices are just absurd compared to competitors.
Is there any difference whatsoever between the TMO and AT&T variants of the Note 3? I can't seem to spot a single difference.

Mobile Networks Are Currently Blocked..?

Hey everyone, I could really use some help. (Sorry if this is in the wrong place)
I'm in the USA, on Verizon. I got a note FE the other day (SM-N935L) and went to put in the sim card but it keeps telling me the mobile networks are currently blocked and to contact customer service but I can't do that because I can't currently make calls or have data. Any help would be appreciated. If you need more info to possibly help, just let me know.
Thank you
This device doesn't work for Verizon or sprint it's GSM only.

Probably not,AT&T & T-Mobile are your best bets for using international phones on their networks & associated MVNOs.
Not trying to sound like a jerk, but,Google is your friend on the subject.
Here's a fairly recent write up giving a Readers Digest summary:

Also, try these sites for specific device compatibility:

@Jedibkj :
Here's another older article attempting to clear the air on the subject of Verizon & phones from elsewhere/not branded/specific to their network:

Also,here's Verizon's BYOD Compatibility page:

Yeah as stated above google helps you out tons when you are in the market for a new device. I never looked for international devices or non-carrier branded phones while I was with Verizon and Sprint they are CDMA and most unlocked devices are GSM. For me I just knew for most functions to work on my phone they had to have the sprint or verizon logo on them some where.
I have not looked back since I left both of the above companies because I feel I have so many more options now. There are others who have made the same mistake and I have seen their listings on ebay. There are lots of people looking for this device so at least you can get your money back by selling it if you need to. (swappa is a good option for selling as well)
Thank you for all the info! I thought it was CDMA compatible but I guess I was wrong.. :/ I need to check more before buying! Live and learn I guess... I'll probably end up reselling it.
Thank you for all the help!
My K model gets full LTE signal and bars on Cricket. I'm in Phoenix.
