Are there any stable ROMs that have Backup Assistant? My son just bought a Droid X and I rooted it for him. I have an Incredible and it seems like I have so many more choices as far as ROMs go. I put a couple ROMs on his X but they both had Backup Assistant removed and he really needs to have it.
I'm not sure of any of the ROM's currently that have Backup Assistant still in it. I think most of the ROM's have taken out all/most of the Moto Blur features and a lot of the "bloatware" that verizon throws on their phones. MY guess would be that most devs are pulling this out of the phone. If you really want to add it back in, I would try this...I have never had to do this for Backup Assistant, but I have manually added Facebook back in like this...
NOTE: If you have the phone rooted, I would make sure that you have koush's bootstrap installed and make a backup of the phone in its current state in case something goes wrong. Then you have a backup you can restore.
The usual...I take no responsibility if your phone gets messed up from following this...
Open a command prompt with the phone attached using Charge only USB mode.
Type the following commands:
1) type: adb shell (press enter)
2) tyep: su (press enter)
3) type: mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
You will need the android sdk installed, and open up ANOTHER command prompt to the sdk/tools/ folder. Paste the attached .apk and .odex files for backup assistant in the tools folder. You will need to rename the .odex.zip file to just .odex
make sure that ithe phone recognized by adb (at command prompt, type adb devices)
From command prompt at C:\<sdk location\tools\
1)type: adb push BackupAssistanceClient.apk /system/app
2)type: adb push BackupAssistanceClient.odex /system/app
switch back to the first command prompt where you typed adb shell (MAKE SURE NONE OF THIS IS MISPELLED! the slightest error can brick a phone!
1) type: cd /system/app
2) type: chmod 644 BackupAssistanceClient.apk
3) type: chmod 644 BackupAssitanceClient.odex
4) Type: exit
you may need to type exit one more time, but make sure it returns you to a normal command prompt. Then type adb remount
This will remount the /system portion of the phone back to the normal read-only state.
Then you will need to reboot the phone. When it loads up, this should have the app reloaded for you to use.

Either they do not know how to do this, or they don't want their contacts with Google
I would suggest syncing with Google over using the Backup Assistant
Log into the Backup Assistant web site
Somewhere you will find export contacts
Export as a csv file
Log into GMail
Go to Contacts
Click import
Find your downloaded csv file
Import
Run the merge and clean option
And you are done
I BELIEVE Apex still has Backup Assistant, not 100% sure though as I've been running GummyJAR for a while now:
http://androidforums.com/droid-x-al...id-x-running-running-fast-can-12-16-10-a.html
Honestly if you just want to be able to keep track of your contacts, I would just back them up to the SD card, load up a different ROM (my personal favorite after having tried them all is GummyJAR at the moment), load the saved contact list then make sure your Google account is backing them up. It's what I do and I prefer it over relying on Verizon's software.
Yeah gmail.contact sync is super easy... but apex has backup assistant on it still, fyi

Yeah ApeX is definitely the way to go !! and it indeed does have Backup assist.

To the OP, this is what I would suggest. Gmail backup is much easier. Once you log in to the phone with your Gmail account, your contacts will automatically come up.
Yes I would suggest Gmail contacts as well. I ROM all the time and my contacts always get sync'd to my phone as soon as I add my Gmail. Once I add my FB it also syncs with their profiles and adds/updates pictures.

So I just successfully figured out how to backup and restore all Locale (THE PROGRAM) settings/preferences/profiles/etc.
TO BACKUP:
adb pull /data/data/edu.mit.locale /locale
TO RESTORE (after wipe):
adb push /locale /data/data/edu.mit.locale
Please don't ask how to setup ADB...SEARCH if you have problems such as that.

Sweet! Will the same technique work for Open Home (or whatever)?
probably! i'm not really good with this stuff so i was really proud when this worked. but yeah you could just do
adb shell
ls /data/data
find the open home (or another programs') folder (probably looks like com.something.something)
that's to get the PATH to that folder. then do:
exit
adb pull /data/data/com.something.something /TheFolderOnYourComputer
and finally:
adb push /TheFolderOnYourComputer /data/data/com.something.something

Not that much of a discovery but still a valid one.
You just copy the contents of /data/data and replace/add it after you update/wipe your phone

Thank you so much for that discovery!! Might not seem so impressive to one person, but this will be a hand saver for me. One less thing to set up after each wipe. Thank you so much again!!
I've wiped and installed a lot of roms lately, and generally when I go to 'my downloads' in the market, only my paid apps are there. So, I have to go though the process of searching the installing each app again. It's just easier when they are all in a list.
I figured it would be a good idea to backup all my apps and then reinstall them afterward with adb in linux as such:
for a in `ls *.apk`; do adb install $a; done
this works, but of course they don't show up under 'my downloads' and I don't get update notifications.
Is there a way around this?

You need to backup and restore the database file located in the market folder....it should be here...
Code:
/data/data/com.android.vending/databases
I'm assuming since you can backup and restore your apps thru adb then you can figure out how to pull and push this to your phone
I assume you would want to do this to get update notifications. If so you can grab "aTrackDog" from the market. It will list all you apps and when you refresh it will tell you when updates are available and give you a link to get the update from the market.

well i just wiped and installed the latest cyanogen mod and when i went to the "my downloads" section of the store all the apps i had downloaded before were all there (paid and free)
I also thought it didnt do that, apperently it does

You don't need ADB, you can use the terminal emulator from the market or the recovery console.
To pull the database, open terminal or recovery and type:
Code:
su
cd /data/data/com.android.vending/
cp databases /sdcard
that will copy that database file to the root of your sdcard.
When pushing it back it is probably best to do it while the phone isn't running, so only use the recovery console:
Code:
cd sdcard
cp databases /data/data/com.android.vending/
reboot
I haven't tested this, but it will have the same results as the ADB method.

No, you will not get updates without re-purchasing the app. And talking about ripping off app developers on this forum is frowned up so please stop discussing it.

If you got a refund, then you shouldn't have the app. That's stealing and it's not nice. Most apps are cheap (a couple of bucks at most), stop being a cheapskate.

i tried this but it dodnt work.
when I did the first command it said ommiting databases. so I thought it worked.
flashed to the new cyanogen 4.0 rom (which is amazing btw!) did the second command and it said cannot stat file "databases" no such file or folder.
what gives??
Id say the databases were open and couldnt be backed up.
You should try to copy them from the recovery.
Also, after copying why didnt you check if the database files were in your sdcard (or the path you specified for the copy) before wiping? If the file is not there its obvious that it cant be restored after the wipe..
thought it might have been hidden or on my ext2 partition! never mind i got atrackdog!

Seems you can only copy each of the four db files individually... but copying the entire folder doesn't work.
All that is needed is assets.db
Open the terminal and enter
$ su
# cp /data/data/com.android.vending/databases/assets.db /sdcard
Wipe, flash, reboot.
YOU MUST OPEN THE MARKET AND AGREE TO THE TOS BEFORE RESTORING!!!!
Open the market, agree to the TOS, and close the market. Open the terminal and enter
$ su
# cp /sdcard/assets.db /data/data/com.android.vending/databases/assets.db
# reboot

its a bit cleaner if you do the following.
unarchive google bits to androidsdk/tools
change dir to androidsdk/tools
adb remount
adb push system/framework /system/framework
adb push system/etc/permissions /system/etc/permissions
adb push system/app /system/app

It may be something else I've broken (I've been tinkering), but is anyone getting gmail push with this build?
Mine seems to have stopped. I can check the mail manually, but nothing is getting pushed to me. Since this could be a Google issue, or something I've done, I'm looking for input before i troubleshoot.

I'm also having issues with new emails being pushed to my phone, but I have been tinkering with SU, so I also may have broke it. I have already installed this on another friend's Hero & I'm going to see if they are having the same issue.
UPDATE:
My friend has not been having an issues receiving new email or with the notifications, so something related to SU or busybox, is possibly causing the issue.

Thanks. I went the whole way back. RUU, rooted with 1.5.2 recovery, flashed quietcblongs 1.6 and copied over googlebits. I'll leave it for a while and verify sync works as expected.
I don't see how busyboxes symlinks or moving su could break it, but your research mirrors mine, so we will see what happens.
Sometime last evening Google syncing stopped again. I'm going to try some mixing and matching with the various 1.5 and 1.6 versions of googlebits.

i meant error device not found
Did you install the Android SDK? If you did, did first cd to the tools folder of you Android SDK, before you did all the adb commands?
i did i do not know what is wrong
I searched around and couldn't get a clear answer. I'm a noob at anything command prompt/terminal related.
I was screwing around with adb last night after figuring out that I can remove program .apks with the rm <com.whatever.program> command. I got a little trigger happy and removed things that I don't use, just to test it out. I made a nandroid backup before I started. The phone runs fine, but now the Market won't download anything. It just sits on the Starting download... screen.
One of the .apks I removed was GmailProvider.apk. Whether this is the problem or not, I'd like to reinstall it for practice. I can always nand restore later.
So my question is... How can I use adb push to reinstall an apk?
I tried:
Code:
adb push C:\GmailProvider.apk
adb install C:\GmailProvider.apk
adb install C:\GmailProvider.apk \system\app
And about every variation of the 3, in and out of the adb shell.
It didn't work, and I'm at a loss to do anything else. So does anyone have any suggestions?
EDIT: I think my "\" should be "/". I got this
Code:
BusyBox v1.15.2 <2009-12-02 TIME EST> multi-call binary
Usage: install [-cdDsp] [-o USER] [-g GRP] [-m MODE] [source] dest|directory
Copy files and set attributes
Options:
Then some usage stuff here.
Then I looked at the command prompt and made a face like .
Suggestions?
It might help to say that I'm using EvilEris 2.0.1, Windows 7.
Just reflash your ROM after doing a titanium backup. Easiest fix.
try this after putting GmailProvider.apk in your sdk\tools dir:
Code:
adb remount
adb push GmailProvider.apk /system/app
remount marks the system directory as read/write

Beat me to it. ADB is powerful and pretty cool if you know some good commands, but you can really mess up your phone if you know what I mean. Not mess up like brick (unless you really try) but more like phone won't load gmail now, phone won't get past the htc screen. As long as you have a nandroid backup you SHOULD be fine, the push, pull and rm commands are really the first step of rom building. If you know what files you pushed and rm'd you can make your dream rom.

You do not have to do anything after an adb push.
What rom? Some roms have been modified to the point some htc apps will not work. Addionally a copy of the htcfacebook.apk from an eris build may not work on a sprint based or g1 based roms do to signature variations

If you can find the app in the market then its safe to remove. If its in the market that makes it optional. However removing google apps can have adverse affects on other google apps, but your phone will still continue to function just fine, and most if not all the google apps can be found in the market (with the exception of the market itself, dont remove that!). Apps such as the music app and clock apps can be replaced entirely by market apps. Preinstalled wallpapers can also be removed from the rom. Another thing i remove is any ringtones I dont think I"ll need. I dont know about liberated, but cm6 has WAY more ringtones than I need/want, so I just delete em. I also now remove the boot animation from the ROM before installing it to save a few MB. You just get a black screen where the bootanimation would normally show up until the phone boots.
Whats the easiest way to remove files? Ive tried to use Root Explorer and Titanium Backup but they show back up when I restart... Im hoping there is an easier way to remove than adb.....????

adb is pretty easy actually. Search the forums for making a cmd shortcut for adb, or if someone remembers how they could post it (this will make life infinitely easier). Then you just boot into recovery and plug in the phone, type the following without the apostrophes:
'adb shell' hit enter.
'cd /system/app' enter.
'ls' enter. (this will pop up a list of the apps you have)
'rm name of app.apk' and its gone forever.
Just keep repeating that last step for every app you want removed.
Can i do this via Terminal Emulator?
yes but the command is different...id give it if i knew it...

rm /system/app/youtube.apk

make sure your bored into clockwork recovery. Then go to partitions and mount system. then just follow those same directions I posted above. To remove the app you would type:
rm youtube.apk
Exactly like that, with a space after rm and no /.
hm...
Some times I use SystemApp Remover.
Its pretty easy to work.
