ADB Push - Droid Eris Android Development

I searched around and couldn't get a clear answer. I'm a noob at anything command prompt/terminal related.
I was screwing around with adb last night after figuring out that I can remove program .apks with the rm <com.whatever.program> command. I got a little trigger happy and removed things that I don't use, just to test it out. I made a nandroid backup before I started. The phone runs fine, but now the Market won't download anything. It just sits on the Starting download... screen.
One of the .apks I removed was GmailProvider.apk. Whether this is the problem or not, I'd like to reinstall it for practice. I can always nand restore later.
So my question is... How can I use adb push to reinstall an apk?
I tried:
Code:
adb push C:\GmailProvider.apk
adb install C:\GmailProvider.apk
adb install C:\GmailProvider.apk \system\app
And about every variation of the 3, in and out of the adb shell.
It didn't work, and I'm at a loss to do anything else. So does anyone have any suggestions?
EDIT: I think my "\" should be "/". I got this
Code:
BusyBox v1.15.2 <2009-12-02 TIME EST> multi-call binary
Usage: install [-cdDsp] [-o USER] [-g GRP] [-m MODE] [source] dest|directory
Copy files and set attributes
Options:
Then some usage stuff here.
Then I looked at the command prompt and made a face like .
Suggestions?
It might help to say that I'm using EvilEris 2.0.1, Windows 7.

Just reflash your ROM after doing a titanium backup. Easiest fix.

try this after putting GmailProvider.apk in your sdk\tools dir:
Code:
adb remount
adb push GmailProvider.apk /system/app
remount marks the system directory as read/write

Beat me to it. ADB is powerful and pretty cool if you know some good commands, but you can really mess up your phone if you know what I mean. Not mess up like brick (unless you really try) but more like phone won't load gmail now, phone won't get past the htc screen. As long as you have a nandroid backup you SHOULD be fine, the push, pull and rm commands are really the first step of rom building. If you know what files you pushed and rm'd you can make your dream rom.

You do not have to do anything after an adb push.
What rom? Some roms have been modified to the point some htc apps will not work. Addionally a copy of the htcfacebook.apk from an eris build may not work on a sprint based or g1 based roms do to signature variations

A couple things to do after you get the Googlebits on:
Move su
Code:
#cp /system/xbin/su /system/bin/su
#ls /system/bin/**to verify su copied**
#rm /system/xbin/su
Install busybox symlinks
Code:

Link perfectly fine for me, site is loading a little slow, but it's still there.
Thanks for posting googlebits.
Just a FYI
its a bit cleaner if you do the following.
unarchive google bits to androidsdk/tools
change dir to androidsdk/tools
adb remount
adb push system/framework /system/framework
adb push system/etc/permissions /system/etc/permissions
adb push system/app /system/app
adb reboot

Worked great for me! Thanks!
It may be something else I've broken (I've been tinkering), but is anyone getting gmail push with this build?
Mine seems to have stopped. I can check the mail manually, but nothing is getting pushed to me. Since this could be a Google issue, or something I've done, I'm looking for input before i troubleshoot.

I'm also having issues with new emails being pushed to my phone, but I have been tinkering with SU, so I also may have broke it. I have already installed this on another friend's Hero & I'm going to see if they are having the same issue.
UPDATE:
My friend has not been having an issues receiving new email or with the notifications, so something related to SU or busybox, is possibly causing the issue.

Thanks. I went the whole way back. RUU, rooted with 1.5.2 recovery, flashed quietcblongs 1.6 and copied over googlebits. I'll leave it for a while and verify sync works as expected.
I don't see how busyboxes symlinks or moving su could break it, but your research mirrors mine, so we will see what happens.
Sometime last evening Google syncing stopped again. I'm going to try some mixing and matching with the various 1.5 and 1.6 versions of googlebits.
When i put the code in the cmd it says code not found
i meant error device not found
Did you install the Android SDK? If you did, did first cd to the tools folder of you Android SDK, before you did all the adb commands?
i did i do not know what is wrong

App location

I have been running Tainted Vanilla and was going to try Ivan's Eris_Official Rom. but when I installed it there are some apps missing from the market that I have paid for ( ie. Age of Conquest Europe, Africa, Asia ). I have installed the market fix and this has made no difference.
I have looked in /system/app but did not see the apps listed in there
I have also looked at backing it up with astro but it is listed as private
So i wanted to see if I could just pull the APK from adb or if there is some thing I have done wrong.
Any help would be cool Thanks
Mike
i'm not sure i can help with the missing apps (were you using apps2sd?)... but, i often backup my apks for just that reason
you can pull/backup the apks...
adb remount
then... depending on where apps are...
adb pull /system/app ./
or
adb pull /data/app ./
or
adb pull /system/sd/app ./
it will copy all the installed apks to the current working directory (i'm assuming you're using a Windows PC... if not, let me know). hopefully this at least helps!
Thanks for the help.
I was using a Nand backup and jumping from one to the other.
the adb commands worked for me. thanks again

Custom Rom App Removal

hey guys,
how would i go about removing apps from an installed custom rom?
ive tried titanium back... doesnt work, tried pulling the apps from the pack nothing,
ive tried root exploits and it just sends your phone into an almost
"paperweight"
like state,
any further moves i can do to remove various bits ? there as some things i just genuinely dont want.
Telling which rom and which apps might help
[ROM] Pays-ROM HD SPARTA v1.0 [ULTRA LIGHT] [19/NOV/10]
[ROM] Pays-ROM HD SPARTA v1.0 [ULTRA LIGHT]
i cant list the apps i want to remove as im off to work, but can you do some background work into it for me??

I've just discovered there are issues where /system isn't getting wiped correctly prior to a new rom being flashed. Keep getting apps from other roms and such sitting in my /system folder even after a wipe and flash - at this stage I assume CWM is bugged? Could be your issue is related.
nope the ADB coding doesnt work as its almost like there is a PERMANENT R/w lock on the section i need to remove apps from
unfortunately the issues AERNT related, as ive wiped everything before, these apps are pre installed on the ROM. What does me with this is that the root exploit to remove these apps as in Titanium backup ... just turns the phone into a very expensive paperweight till the battery is remove
weather apps (widgets etc,)
Twitter apps , teet and various other bits i want to remove

Get a new rom ???
hmm flash a new rom??this is the most refined rom i can find for DHD.
for that reason its more of a hassle to flash new roms
I would rather crack it, mind you i might be really thick asking this. that code you gave me have i got to get the adb.exe from android SDK and do this via a cmd.exe window on my pc or have i got to do it on my phone via termnial emulator.
how weird!!!... i used to terminal emulator to allow su (I.E to give system SU Permissions and now i can remove the apps ) haha

Yes from the android sdk. It *should* work from a terminal emulator as well if you run these commands first to mount the /system/app directory as read/write:
Code:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
chmod 777 /system/app
Other option would be to use the root explorer app, it is a paid app though well worth it.

[Q] ADB will not remount!

Okay So ever since I have gotten my Epic a week ago I have felt like a total Noob. I came from an HTC HERO which I rooted manually. My wife has an HTC EVO which I rooted using UNREVOKED ONE CLICK (I know I cheated but she doesnt care). This Epic has me heading back to my roots lol. Either I am a total Noob and this is a simple fix and my dumb ass keeps overlooking it (which at this point I am hoping for) or my Epic is Effed and I need to send it back before my 30 days is up.
Basically my problem is that I cant Adb remount or Adb push to save my life. When I use Adb devices it lists my device so I know my phone is talking with my computer correctly. I first Odin'd to DK28 with the root and clockwork etc. Everything seemed fine except I like to swap stock fonts for custom fonts via Adb, simple things like that. Since I cant remount I figured something was either wrong with the Rom or the Root. So I just tried to load a custom ROM up and try my luck seeing as thats pretty simple. I loaded Epic Experience 2.0.06 and got it all set up as my Daily. Then I got busy and just used it for a few days continuing to tweak my Rom and get it all dialed in for daily use.
I wanted to try ViperRom and see what that was all about so I made a backup in Clockwork and loaded ViperROM with no problem. While ViperROM is pretty snappy its not really my taste so I figured I would wipe and restore my EE backup. No matter how many times I did the data wipe, cache, davlik etc my restore would boot up greeting me with force close after force close. So I ODIN'd back to stock 2.2 then used the one click root exploit to get root. it seems like it worked but still ADB problems continue to persist. I have tried everything I can possibly think or research via XDA but now I am out of ideas.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ANDROID SDK 3 times 2 twice with "Accept-All" radio ticked and once with just the 2.1 and 2.2 goodies.
I have tried different cables none of which are stock. on every usb port on my computer all replicate the same issues: Adb devices shows up right but will not remount only run in shell. and when i run Adb shell it responds with $ first needing me to open su just to get the # symbol.
Any input is incredibly appreciated.
you know, I've had the same problem lately. --curious to know what's causing it.

We have a different method than the Hero did. If you've already tried that, lemme know. Works fine for me on stock rooted, Nebula, and (now) Bonsai.
Also, if that doesn't work, try it from a terminal app on the phone. I use it there more than anything.

Hey man thanks for your input, I really appreciate it. That didnt work either, on ADB or on Terminal Emulator. It responds correctly from both sources with:
Code:
remount rw
Remounting /system </dev/st19> in read/write mode
I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that the 64bit drivers dont install totally. this module called the "Abstract Control Module" hangs forever and doesn't install. However I ran over to my wifes 32 bit vista laptop where the drivers will install totally with no success either.
Hrm... That's very strange. It's telling you that it is working. What is the error you get when trying to move stuff from there? So, after remount rw'ing, cp something into a system folder and post those results.
Your output for remount rw is correct, so let's see where that goes.

That last one appears to have worked. Check and see if movetest.txt is in /system/fonts. If so, then you're in business. Just copy stuff across as root instead of pushing.
Well now I can use ADB fully. I odined back to stock then used the one click clockwork 3.0.0.05 ext4 batch then flashed Truley Epic Rebirth 1.2 and was able to remount correctly, push and pull all the way down to the root dir. Well my issue was a bit different. I could get it show up with the "devices" command. When I tried to "adb remount" it would deny me. It would reply with "device not found". Which is really wierd because I could ADB shell with root access any day of the week. I just had to change my process to accommodate the limitation.
I would just ADB push files to the sdcard, mount into shell to gain full root permissions then finish my work.
Kind of a strange round about way of going about it but I learned quite a bit more linux commands that way lol

Rooted, still can't delete News & Weather

Hi,
I used Unrevoked's one-click Mac .app to root my Aria. I can boot into Recovery fine, but perhaps pertinently (perhaps not) there's a weird loop I can't get out of: (bottom of post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829439)
Anyways, I installed CM6.1-Liberty afterwards using ROM Manager. Now I would like to delete the News and Weather application, but I'm finding it difficult:
I've tried with the Super Manager application, a ROOT manager. It has SuperUser permissions, it tried to mount /system as R/W when I navigate to it, but when I rename the .apk file, the file retains its old name.
I've also tried booting into Recovery, mounting /system from the Partitions menu, then using the Terminal Emulator to do 'mv /system/app/blah.apk /system/app/blah.apk.bak.' But mv complains that the directory is not empty! (are .apk's even considered directories?)
Is something messed up with my ROM? Anything else I can try?
With the phone in recovery and /system mounted, using terminal try navigating to the actual /system/app folder and then removing the .apk. Not sure if its the same as windows, which is the rm command.
rm application.apk
Sent from my cm6.1 Aria using XDA App
It worked! Booted into Recovery, mounted /system, connected via USB, opened up an adb shell, and was able to move the desired apk.
I tested this moving HtcLockScreen.apk on my Liberated ROM. Will try to move the News & Weather application on the CM ROM too, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Thanks!!!
All good. Thank you so much.
I've gotta wonder now: what is it about Recovery that lets you do this? I can't find much (if any) hard info on Recovery online, or hboot/fastboot for that matter. It's a little annoying having to power down my phone to adb stuff around, then powering back up.

I think it had to do with the fact that the aria is an s-on device (don't quote me on that). Whatever it is, the system can't be modified while android is running on the aria, so you have to boot into recovery to do it.

I think it had to do with the fact that the aria is an s-on device (don't quote me on that). Whatever it is, the system can't be modified while android is running on the aria, so you have to boot into recovery to do it.

Not quite... You can put Titanium Backup into "Chuck Norris" mode and it will let you delete some system apps. Another easy way to achieve the same is to unzip the ROM, delete the .apk and .odex files you do not want, rezip it and re-flash. Bingo... the stuff you do not want is gone. You need to know what you are deleting though, some stuff is used by the system and other apps.
For anyone else whos wondering how to delete a non-uninstallable apk this is how I usually do it on windows (should be the same on mac too.)
- boot into recovery
-open new command promp
-adb shell mount /system
-adb shell rm -r /sysytem/app/apkname.apk
done and done, note letter case matters in apk name.
U can also extract the rom on ur computer and delete the .apks u don't want
