Curious as to what everyone thinks
I am thinking of switching to the EPIC and giving my wife the evo ... The Epic seems awesome... Need to see how out turns out though

i think its too early to tell, i mean the evo has been rooted already and will continue to be supported in a pretty big way by the devs here, theres no telling if the samsung will have the same level of rootability.

True..it's just that screen and the processing power with the gyroscope of the epic is very tempting..
Give up an 8MP camera for a QWERTY keyboard... Nah, not worth it.
Gonna go ahead and keep my EVO for a while.
Yeah because our 8mp camera is just soo amazing...

Heh the evo's camera sucks.
Anyway, I'll hold into my evo until it launches sometime in the future and I'll probably pick it up. Looks to soundly beat the evo and the droid x. At least its already rooted the only issue will be samsungs encoded drivers.

Better than the 5MP I upgraded from when I switched from my Hero... Oh wait, that's the same camera on the Epic.
The EPIC is EVO Jr. EVO is the best phone on the market, even better than the iPhone 4.

I must agree
I don't know, spec-wise the epic is pretty compelling.
The 5MP camera will look better than the evos because the lower mp sensor will undoubtedly have less grain and better low-light pictures.
The qwerty is welcome, im not sure about the size but it's good news to me that it wont be as large as the evo in wideness.
I love the 4.3" screen on my evo, but 4" sounds like a great tradeoff.
It will surely fit better in the hand, which is very welcome for me.
The hummingbird IS a better processor.. GPU is great. End of story.
Super AMOLED is the best screen technology in the mobile biz. End of story.
The samsung is a better phone.
That said i will probably keep my evo because it looks so much better. LOL
If the framerate issues are fixed and froyo comes along quickly there isn't much of a reason to return the evo.
Either way i'm happy, but my 30-day window is ending soon and there isn't much news about when the Epic will arrive.

very good points..the only thing bothering me is as you said there is no release date, but i think i might take my chances and wait
The Galaxy S model will be released on every carrier, so the Epic will have plenty of support, if not more than the EVO. The specs are undoubtedly better than the EVO's in almost every way. The 45nm processor especially stands out since will mean better battery life.
I need to buy the EVO as soon as it comes back in stock, so I hope the Epic is released within my 30-day window in case I want to exchange.
EDIT: I just saw a video ( youtube (dot) com/watch?v=x31Tl4_F1Wo ) of Touchwiz and it looks TERRIBLE, even though the iPhone-like icons aren't bad. Unless TW can be easily disabled, I'm going with the EVO.

I just discovered LauncherPro today and I have to say it's amazing! The ability to save your screen from notification bar burn alone is worth it!
Feels like I have a brand new phone today...
i would never return an htc phone for a samsung.. im an htc guy!
I currently have a Moment (and it sucks: which is why I don't want an Epic yet alone another Samsung).
I'm wanting a new phone that can handle 3d games without lagging.
I have heard that the new Evo Shift will have the same 800mhz chip that is in the new G2. That chip has been overclocked to a stable 1.6ghz and getting over 3000 in Quadrant.
Also the other rumor is that the Shift will have an upgraded GPU. Which is even better.
Honestly the 3.8" screen isn't that much smaller than the screen on the Evo. It could be the perfect size.
Plus it has a physical keyboard.
Truthfully, it sounds like I already made up my mind. But I guess I have to wait until specs and reviews are out for this phone.
Anyone else getting this Shift over an Evo?
Sent from my SPH-M900 using Tapatalk
If the 3D gaming is that important, and it was concerning the two, than sure I think most would suggest the Shift.
But at this point I'd also suggest seeing what's on the horizon and truth be told Sprint doesn't have the grandest selection but I can see that changing. Some big **** around the corner, but if now - or soon - a new phone is needed and that's what your primary concern is, then the Shift probably your best bet.

CES is coming up this week, I believe, so I'd hold off and see what news comes out of there. Might be something sweet coming down the pipe. We'll have to see.
Ohh! Ohhh! Get Both The evo for now and the shift when it comes out

then EVO Shift is for you!
I need the bigger screen. It dont sound like much... but when you put them side by side... it is a big difference!

True. But the super amoled screen of the epic is awesome. I actually like that than the evo. It really is all up to what the final specs are off the Shift.

if gaming is what you want, shift could be for you. do not get the shift for the keyboard. i can type faster on swype than i ever could with a slide out. you might not think .4 inches is much, but the evo screen is much bigger than the shift screen. i'd look at both side by side and see.

Personally, I would wait for something else all together.
Something with a better processor & gpu. This summer should have what you're looking for (although maybe not from HTC).
If you want games then, as said, the Shift is probably for you.
As for physical keyboards, overrated. When I had a Samsung Intercept while my EVO was being "serviced" by Best Buy I only used it because the touch screen was so useless on that thing.
Typing on the EVO is awesome. Keys are bigger than any slide out since the screen is so big. It all comes to preference though.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/01/02/sprints-htc-evo-shift-4g-specs-leak-online/
some more specs have been released...
I am considering it.
I want a front facing camera... and 8meg camera.
i want to hear about the CPU/GPU and RAM.
can I live with 3.7" vs my current EVO 4.3"??
what are your thoughts on the dev community for this phone?
The EVO has so much more activity before it was released. And the Dev community is great on the EVO.
Latest spoiler from a feed that I'm subscribed to only has this Shift with a 5 mega-pixel camera not 8 and no front camera.
If this is true then I will not get this phone. I'll buy a pair of EVO's off eBay and save my upgrades for something better.

Why not consider the epic. You had an old samsung phone that sucked? Well I had an old htc phone that sucked 2 years ago, but all phones are different.
The samsung galaxy s line is really fast, and with the new ext4 mod on the epic, its crazy fast, like nexus s fast.
If you care about a keyboard, gaming, and camera quality the epic will be as good as or better than the shift.
And don't fall into the mega pixel trap when comparing cameras. The evo camera aint great and video sucks. The shift will be just like the tmobile g2, which is very good. Finally the epic takes pictures and video that rival the iphone in quality, which is to say the best in class for cellphones. With the epic , you can leave your digital camera at home.
Really do a thorough comparison of the epic and evo shift in person before you decide. Don't let yourself be fooled by differnces in 2.1 vs 2.2 software or touchwiz vs sense. You will have changed all your software in a week anyway with xda.

LOL difference is everyone was hesitant to jump back on with Samsung, and for good reason. At least these people that were nervous can sleep easy knowing they were right and that Samsung hasn't done much to change the tune others sing. And when the day arrives that I leave my digitial camera at home and rely SOLELY on a phone ... well, heck, that probably wont happen for a while. I've seen pictures taken with a crappy old 3mp digital cam that look crisper and better in every sense of the word.
Samsung dropped the ball, Epic has nice hardware but they don't compare to HTC. And HTC may not have a perfect track record in the past but they have definitely stepped it up lately.
The Galaxy S phones have been pretty down the middle, some good to go with all that bad.
edit; don't want to discount the fact that the Epic is a decent phone, will be the 3rd best Sprint offering (Whoa - never thought I'd give Sprint props like that) but it should at least "irk" you, and maybe not you directly, with how the whole Galaxy S phones have been handled. Especially with all the talk of Android not getting updates and Samsung support being piss poor. 2.1 treats it fine, my buddies epic flies sure but Touchwiz is horrid and the state of support or lack thereof should be the straw that breaks the camels back or however the hell that goes. I couldn't see anyone honestly suggesting the Epic over the Shift though, as was my point. And the Mega pixel jab, that was true and maybe a low blow but when people hear someone saying "this camera ownz leave dat digi at home, homeboi" it only sets people up for disappointment. Truly and honestly. That's a slight(ly bogus) exaggeration. If not, you must not possess a decent shooter. And no, I'm not talking about the one on the back of the phone.

As you can see from side by side pictures the screen is incredible small against the EVO generation 1. I would agree with the others, wait for CES, i'm sure sprint have a EVO 2 around the corner, after using a 4.3 inch screen i don't want to go down to smaller, just my opinion. To me the shift might be a little bit better for gaming, albeit it's not a HUGE step up. If it had the hummingbird cpu i would say get it, but even now dual cpus moving in, so just try to be patient, because in the long run you will regret it, especially if you're on contract.

Thanks for the links man, my wife has been smitten with the Evo Shift since I originally found leaked pics of it and she'll be excited to see a video of it being used. I've been trying to get her to wait to see what else comes out or to perhaps get a regular Evo but she is convinced she needs a keyboard (I felt the same way but now that I use Swype 99 times out of 100 I wish I had gotten an Evo and not an Epic but such is life). Anyways, I'm looking forward to reading the Evo Shift board and hope some of the veterans of the Evo board help out over there (assuming the similar form factor extends to the software architecture...Hey, I've got an epic and none of the related phones offer any software relatability lol)

Who cares about a camera, HTC is notorious for having crappy camera anyways. I mean its a cell phone, if you're into taking high quality pictures get a Canon D SLR or some type of professional camera lol.
yeah i would upgrade most devs are heading to the evo 3d
Depends on whether you want to root and run custom roms. The Evo 4G has a huge already established dev community. The 3D's bootloader is still locked (if I'm not mistaken) so it might be a long while and an uphill battle before we see a fully rooted 3D and custom roms.
Having said that you should consider the 4G is a year old handset. The 3D's hardware is better in every respect.

My guess is you will have to wait till it has been used for a few days by actual people to get a feel for what battery life will be. Also initial releases have always had "bad" life, updates fix it usually within a couple weeks(using thunderbolt as example). I'm sure if you left 3d off you will get much better battery and better performance, again just a guess since I dont have one....yet.

The pictures are sharper and more accurate. The camera seems to adjust well to the light levels. Overall, I am happy with it. I am no camera expect, but I do use the camera on my phones to take pictures of experiments and data in the lab. These pictures are then put on powerpoints for presentations. The evo3d is a better camera.

They must have not seen the actual phone (I played with it for about half hour).
1) The build quality is unbelievable. It is much prettier than the Evo. The camera button and the 2d/3d switch are actually very small in person, they don't stick out like a sore thumb in the pictures. The back of the phone is like an order of magnitude better than the old evo door. It feels and looks absolutely great. The buttons are very nice, but are elevated from the surface a little more than Evo's. The camera lenses/area also don't stick out like a sore thumb in the pictures - in person, the back looks absolutely fantastic. Evo3d feels a bit smaller/thinner and lighter than the Evo.
2) The device is very snappy much more so than Evo on launch or even now, but there were only a few extra apps installed compared to the factory setup. May have something to do with optimized sense for the Evo3d + 60fps native refresh rate + faster storage.
3) The 2d camera is very good. It takes a bit darker pictures than Evo's, but they are sharp and the color reproduction is excellent (unlike Evo, which often gives decent but incorrect color balance). The pictures basically looked like what you saw in real life on the display.
4) The battery life was so so . According to the graph, going from 90% to 10% in 22 hours and 1:50 hr of display on time, it seems to be on par with the Evo. Evo can do better, but of course, my Evo is optimized. Not sure how it will perform there. There were no flat areas in the graph where the phone was sleeping, so it will probably be better than the evo once the mobile always on and google talk are turned off.
5) The lcd is as good as Evo's but sharper. Kinda reminded me of the retina on iphone4. No pixelation, no overblown colors like samoled. About the same brightness as the Evo.
6) The 3d stuff is AMAZING. It took me about 30sec to figure out how to adjust my eyes for the 3d, and subsequently, I was able to adjust the eyes immediately (maybe less than 1 sec), when viewing new content. The effect itself was very convincing, and it was perfect, at least in sample photos and videos - there was no blurriness or parts of the image separating, it wasn't difficult or strenuous to keep 3d effect going - ah... perfect.
I had my doubts before, but now I'm sold. This is a true successor to the Evo.
The one thing holding back from the EVO 3D is the rooting issue so far. I know Sense 3.0 improves on the previous version, but I cannot stand Sense.
I'm aware you can also run LauncherPro and ADW or other launchers, but knowing it's still there kinda bugs me, lol.
I'm sure in a few months the phone will be unlocked and some AOSP roms will be available, but to the OP, if you like and use Sense on the EVO 4G, I'd definitely upgrade.
Okay so not meaning the spam the threads with another Evo 3D vs 4G. However, hopefully this will encourage or discourage or at least assist some people in making their minds up if they want to go with the 3D or not. I recently (yesterday) got the 3D and I absolutely love it. Camera is great, the screen is beautiful, and sense 3.0 is amazing. The 3D feature..well....I think the best part of it is watching 3D videos on YouTube and playing 3D games. Shooting in 3D takes some practice, and stillness..so I'll get back to you on that one. Speaker quality is fine, though the OG Evo does get a little louder. And yes...I do miss the kickstand. Here's a video for the full comparison.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bc4yf_lJ260
Also...the frame rate is much better as noted in the video..the graphics test was much smoother on the EVO. Lastly, the camcorder audio was also much better.
So hopefully this helps anyone. Honestly, I still think the OG Evo is one of a kind, and I think the 3D is also a great brother to it.
Interesting video. I'm not much of a fun of the 3D. The Samsung Galaxy S II seems like a better upgrade to me (Samsung Within when it comes to Sprint), especially if it gets good developer support.
Yeah the Samsung galaxy II is probably the best device out there lol
Lol, oh btw..I'm still anxiously waiting to see the Nexus Prime, that may become the top device for a while.

Inpsire, no contest. It's a little on the oversaturated side, but the Atrix uses the abysmal pentile sub-pixel layout so it's fuzzy and has a green bias.
Inspire has better colors.
Atrix has a higher resolution.

Not entirely true. The Atrix has 1,036,800 sub-pixels, the Inspire has 1,152,000. So although the Atrix is advertised as having a higher resolution it actually has fewer sub-pixels.
Atrix hands down.
I just know my friends infuse for games look 100x clearer so was just wondering for inspire as well.
Sent from my Optimus 2X using xda premium
Also be aware there is an issue with the Atrix touch panel, after ~10 seconds of contact that area of the touchscreen will stop responding and you will have to lift your finger and touch again. It doesn't matter for many applications, but games like Galaxy on Fire or emulators with virtual thumbsticks are a bit of a pain to play.
I think the biggest problem with the Atrix screen resolution is a good amount of games don't show properly due to the resolution difference. I have a handful of games that run with blackbars and don't form properly.
So games will look better on inspire though correct? ?

Agreed. If you own the Atrix long enough you get used to the screen, but in a head to head comparison with Super AMOLED+ there is no competition. Another plus is that the touch panel and the display are the same piece of glass on the Inspire so there isn't the same air-gap you get with the Atrix.
I think some of you are confusing the HTC INSPIRE with the SAMSUNG INFUSE

The inspire is not a superamoled + display it is a s-lcd.
atrix screen is nothing to gloat about.
i think we all bought this phone because of it being a beast inside. the screen is good enough where it doesnt take away from its awesomeness too much.
so yeah -- inspire wins screen comparison.
but id take dualcore, 1gb ram, qHD over s-lcd/saomled any day.
Yeah theres massive confusion on this thread, the Inspire looks like ass next to an Atrix. The Infuse looks like GOD next to nearly everything else. Yes I've owned all 3. The Inspire has a lower resolution on a larger screen, mine looks fuzzy to me after using my Atrix for just a few days. However my Inspire running CM7 or MIUI pretty much runs right with my Atrix running Alien with the 1.1Ghz OC. Only gaming issue I've had with the Atrix are that some games (Order and Chaos Online) aren't available on the market for it.

holding both phones side by side the inspire does have a better look to it.. my atrix seems to display yellow oddly.. not a big issue but its odd.. the atrix is much crisper but with the extra landscape the inspire has and its running ADRevolution 5.2.4 with sense 3.0 apps its not a contest the inspire is a phone i shouldn't have given to her .. my two cents

It doesn't matter for many applications, but games like Galaxy on Fire or emulators with virtual thumbsticks are a bit of a pain to play.

I don't have the "touchscreen stops responding after 10 seconds" problem, what am I doing wrong?

Agreed. If you own the Atrix long enough you get used to the screen, but in a head to head comparison with Super AMOLED+ there is no competition. Another plus is that the touch panel and the display are the same piece of glass on the Inspire so there isn't the same air-gap you get with the Atrix.

LOL! Since when does Inspire have a SAMOLED+ display?
Why do I keep seeing the same thing on here... the atrix is made for power and performance, not for having the best 4" screen you can look at. I mean honestly, its a 4" screen! Look how clear my screen is when I hold it inches from my face lol I plug my HDMI cable into a 55" Samsung 3d tv when I am worried about graphics and color rendering. We have devs working on landscape too. I prefer beast mode with lightning response time over my amazing 4" screen.
