so i'm upgrading my wizard to an 8525. up til now i've managed to get by without a data plan and only text messages. i'm curious how to get cheap data plans on at&t. i called them and they said $29.95/mo JUST for data.
i've heard people getting unlimited data for like $6 a month using proxies or something? i've had no luck perusing google and forums for info on this so hoping somebody here has some answers. thanks!
The cheapest plan I know you can get for unlimited data is the mediaNet unlimited for 19.99 a month, and thats if you get someone thats nice enought to give you that plan since they aren't supposed to give that plan to people with PDAs
so do you know if the mediaNet unlimited for 19.99 a month with work with a hermes? i used to have that with my 8125, but when i bought the 8525 they changed it...if i change it back to the media net plan...will it work? without getting any strange overages on my bill?

Yeah it will work. I've used for the last several months! The only thing to remember is to ONLY connect through wap.cingular, NOT isp.cingular.
I've noticed no problems with mine! When you get the phone the sales rep always tells you that you have to have the pda plan to use the phone. It is against the rules to use the MediaMax plan but between my phone and my wifes phone spending an extra 100 bucks a month for data started to really suck the wallet dry.
Now we both use Media Max 200 +Unl m2m texts. 24.99 Text and data all you want!
There are some other threads out here about this, search media max and you'll find them.
Now your not supposed to do this but many of us get away with it. Just make sure after every rom flash that youve got your connections setting on wap.cingular and UN: [email protected] and Pw: Cingular1
Reps and Phone people will not let you get this plan, GO ONLINE to att.com/mobile and add it there!
tell the reps that you're switching to a razr or something and ask to be switched to a Media Max option which gives you unlimited data and either 200 messages (19.99) or 1500 messages (29.99). MUCH cheaper than getting a PDA data option.
If your unlocked and have the coverage in your area, I would check T-Mobile data rates. I saved a bunch not going with AT&T.

while that's true, you do miss out on using 3G. especially if the prices you get can be close to the same.
so wat u r sayin is that i will lose my 3g connectivity if i get the media max plan instead of the pda......right now i have the 39.99 plan with unlimited internet and messaging.....so do u guys think it will be worth it to switch to the media max??
from the sounds of it no, you can still use 3g. please connect me if i am wrong... anyone?

You're right. You won't lose 3G by going with the lower priced plan. The person who said that you'd lose 3G was comparing using T-Mobile's lower cost plans to AT&T plans.
Oh, sorry if I confused anyone. I meant you lose 3G if you go to T-Mobile for a lower priced data plan. You absolutely will not lose 3G by getting a Media Max plan. I have the Media Max 1500 plan and I was using the Hermes (now Kaiser) and love it.

screw someone that's nice enough.
Do all of your business with AT&T online if possible. Go to the site and select MediaMax from the list (unlimited internet and like 200 text messages I believe) or the upgraded version that's exactly the same except 1500 text messages (for $29.99 instead of $19.99 a month). Do it online and nobody can say no.
getting the cheaper unimited plan for my 8525
If I go online and order the cheaper 29 dollar plan (or was it 39) anway, can I connect my AT&T 8525 to my laptop (tether) and use it for internet service? The AT&T rep told me this cost $80! My AT&T phone is running factory ROM, mobile 5 (mobile 6 when ever it comes out)

There's some people who still are waiting for the "official" release from AT&T. I guess that it all depends on your comfort level and what you're willing to do to/for your Hermes.
i have a cingular 8125, with T-mobile service, and i pay 6 dollars a month, (i dont think i even have to pay that_ because the proxy settings are from MMS settings, hmm.... but yea its super fast, but for 6 bucks, i cant complain

Here's what I've heard ... you can tether on the $20 plan ... but do so at your own discretion since tethering isn't a part of the plan. There's a lot of discussion about this on hofo. So far no one has been charged that I know of.

How did you set up/ where is the $6 tmobile internet?
I just Called At&T and told them to add [Media Max 200 Bundle for $19.99] to my account. they told me that I have 8525 PDA phone. and I told them that I am going to change the phone to razr. Then they added it for me and I reset the phone after changing the setting to wap.cingular
Now it is working fine. with 3G Connection.
I have hd2 now with $5.99 data plan now I think about swtich to nexus one.can I still can use that $5.99 data plan?!or must $24.99?
anyone know.if not are there any other way to resolve it?
i'm using it now and have since day 1 of the N1 release and for a year with the iphone before that
same here. thats the only reason i got the nexus. so far so good! and the nexus is freaking SWEET!
guys wait....what data plan you have? the 24.99 one or 5.99one??!
The lowest data plan on the t-mobile site I see is $10 for "unlimited web".
Can one of you guys provide a link to the t-zones plan? thanks.

yes, now there isn't 5.99 anymore, right now it is 9.99
paullu is correct. If you've been with TMO since they had $5.99 tzones and still have it on your plan, you can have that. I think there's even a user of these forums that claims to still have $2.99 tzones. If neither of those apply to you, the cheapest you can now get it for is $10 by saying you have some non-smartphone but want the internet access for some strange reason and make them believe you.
I'm using the 5 dollar plan since the middle of january.
As others have said, the $5.99 TZones plan is only available if you have it grandfathered in on your plan. Using this plan is a classic "trick" for any unlocked smartphone device that you use on your line... works with unlocked iPhones and other devices.
Unfortunately, I am a sucker and have the standard $24.99 plan.
yeah i got my data plan a year ago or so, 5.99tzones. im one of the lucky ones who are now grandfathered so my internet is cheaper. but my minutes arent!
Beware I had the $5.99 plan for years but at some point it morphed into the $9.99 TmobileWeb plan. When I got the N1 it switched off several times. I noticed that setting my phone in the my.tmobile.com webpage to a dumbphone seemed to reset it to work again. That worked for January and February but it failed two weeks ago. I am guessing that Tmo somehow identifies smartphone users (especially the N1) and has gotten more aggressive about their data plans.

When I first got the Nexus One, I was on the iPhone 3G with the $9.99 plan. I poped in my sim card, and I had bypassed all the screens, logged onto my google account and the contacts were synced already. It showed the 3G logo and when I called up T-Mobile, they said the Android Internet plan isn't required but I still bumped it up to the Android plan anyways.
I got a great deal for a used Iphone and have been using it for the last week. I had to switch data plans to the iphone only but I love my Tilt 2 and would like to use both phones but inserting my sim card into my Tilt 2 will only let me use voice plan but no data. Any apps out there to fool att in thinking I am using the iphone when I am really using the Tilt 2 so i can get data.
Instead of using the MediaNet connection, change the Tilt2 to use wap.cingular and it will be invisible to the network.

MediaNet IS wap.cingular, it's the APN. AFAIK, ATT only has two, and the other is for Paying Thether users.
Hm, I have a similar concern as well.
Currently I use a tilt 2, but my friend has an old 3GS that he doesn't use. I have a grandfather plan of unlimited data under tilt2, but I plan on playing with both.
Does anyone know if I inserted my Sim into the iphone, if it would mess with my data plan.
Regards,
K

Actually, it isn't. I created a new connection using the wap.cingular as my connection and then set it as my default connection for all usage. Now, when I log onto my AT$T account online I no longer see my phone or am able to access any info about (minutes/data used, etc.). If I switch back to MediaNet the phone miraculously reappears in my account. Something about accessing the network directly using wap.cingular changes how the network sees the user.

It will definitely mess up your plan. ATT will read the IMEI number on the phone as being an iPhone, and they will switch you to the iPhone plan. Furthermore, not completely sure but I think that once they take a grandfathered plan off your account, you can't get it back. So I wouldn't mess with this, and risk losing the unlimited data plan.

Figured so! Thanks! It's not a big deal to me as I have an itouch as well. WifiRouter + Tilt 2 + itouch, I would take over iphone anyday! (takes away all the programs that only require wifi problems away for one!)

I am still using the unlimited $15 data plan I originally got with my RAZR V3. Updated to an Incite and now the TP2 (both bought off Craig's List) and they still haven't changed my data plan to a required Smartphone plan.

Are those phones ATT branded, or not (seems like at least the Incite would be)? ATT seems to be pretty good at picking up the IMEI numbers for their branded phones. But mostly have no way of knowing the IMEI numbers for non-ATT subsidized devices.
I've read of some users on the ATT forum of having their data plan changed the same day, after inserting their SIM into an iPhone that they got from a friend, etc.
Both are AT$T-branded phones. I don't know about iPhones, but they can't change your plan without your permission or without you changing your contract. Changing phones does not qualify as a change of contract since the contract is for service, not phones. Every time I call in for something they try to get me to switch my plan, but I tell them I don't want to lose my grandfathered unlimited plan. They tell me I'm not supposed to be on it with the phone I'm using, but they are powerless to do anything until I either change it myself or upgrade my phone through AT$T and sign a new contract. Not going to happen anytime soon as I'm very happy with my Tilt2.
My wife & I have been with AT&T for near of 7 years now, and we are on the grandfathered unlimited data plans for both my tilt 2 and her *gulp* iphone4. We recently had a house guest, and we activated my wife's old iphone 3g. It too was instantly put on the grandfathered plan, as well as the rest of our family plan.
Adding a line does not "qualify" with AT&T as a contractual change UNLESS you buy a new phone. If your recycling an older phone, or you out right bought another one from some place else.

Not if you had tzones added on a non-smartphone before getting the HD2. I have the TZones internet as well that was added back when I had a Nokia phone
T-zone used to be $5 which used wap.voicestream.com in the past. I think the current T-zone is call Web2go and it's for $10; has restricted access to website. You can try using epc.tmobile.com, the new data access point. Please, tell me how it goes.
I Love the 10 dollar unlimited plan.
Ive been rocking this 10 plan on truly unlimited data for many, many months now.
All you had to do was sign up on my t mobile, select the shadow as your phone, go to edit your services, remove your internet, re-add unlimited web for phones 10 dollar option, wait 24-48 hours, manually enter APN internet2.voicestream.com
There you have it, will check to see if the option is still there, if you had it, you are GRANDFATHERED in FOREVER!! 4.5Mbps Download 1.4 Mpbs Upload on Unlimited 10 dollar plan, only works with the hd2 for the Hspa.
Plan not available anymore, 4G 200MB for $15 or an Unlimited 4G option for $30.
64.00 unlimited everything is very nice with this HD2 on Android, lol.
He's right it works..... But T-mobile doesn't give you that plan anymore... if you know someone with that t-zone phone buy him his phone and take over his plan.. lolol... it's best thing to do... Cuz all T-mobile internet APN works on 3G frequencies...
Cuz it's true that we don't need anything else these days... we can text, make phone calls and all that over the mobile data plans....(Google voice, SIP, Ect...) But companies Knows That..lol.. so now you can't buy a data plan by it self anywhere... Bastards trying to make money..lol...
Like me I have a sidekick data Plan Unlimited for 30 bucks (Unlimited 3g Data & Text) I have it in my HD2 with Android on it... with the sidekick APN (hiptop.t-mobile.com)
And the 3g and text works very good...
Those plans are not gonna come back..lolol...
So back to the original question on getting the mms with pics to work, has anyone got it to work?
Gigabyte01
I had the edge plan for $10 on my Iphone for awhile and it worked great. Tried to do it for my G1 and it would not work and then my iphone broke and I was without a phone so I had to give up the $10 unlimited data... I doubt I will be able to get it back ever. I had to fight with them to get the plan in the first place.
The only one I can even think of that is barely worth it is the $30 T-mobile plan with 5gb. The thing that is crappy though about this plan and the N7 is that you are paying extra for voice and texts you will never be able to use
What other plans do you guys think will be available (and worth it) for the HSPA+ Nexus 7?
100 mins of voice isn't really enough to use let alone complain about wasting. I wonder if you could get SMS/MMS to work though with the right app and APN settings.
Also, will TMO let you use that plan on a data only device? I think 30$ for a prepaid data plan at 5gb is pretty good.

I would love to see some data plans that were based on total data used versus pay-per-month with caps.
In other words, I would like to pay $30-$50 for 5GBs, but be able to continue to have it until I used it all up, or until it 'expired' over a longer period of time.
Based on my normal usage, since I'm generally around some wifi, I rarely use data over 3g/4g. Even on my phone. Most of the data I do use is background apps like email, etc. So I might only use 100-300MB over a month. Granted if I travel or go on a business trip, that amount goes up, but for day-to-day use, it's often quite small. But even if I used, say, 1GB, I would love to be able to purchase 5GB and have 5 months to use it.
Many prepaid carriers already do this for voice minutes. You can buy X minutes and use it up over a period of months, with some minimum monthly usage. These low-minute plans can cost people as little as $7-10/month. That would be great for data too.
Though I doubt we will see this for a long time.
