So my phone got the 2.3.1 ota, however I am rooted and have clockwork flashed. It would not install the ota and now I no longer have the option to install it. What do I need to do to go back to stock, and once stock how do I get the ota? Any help?

I understood this to be the case too, but then I thought I read that 2.3.1 gets rid of CWM?

that im not sure of, because 2.3.1 is only a partial update, if you where to flash a full ROM it would overwrite the Recovery
If you put a stock image back on your phone, it should re-flash to the stock recovery on the first boot.
The recovery, at least on the N1 is included with the stock ROM's system.img.
Edit: I think it is /system/recovery-from-boot.p, at least /etc/install-recovery.sh seems to imply that, but I haven't had a massive look, I'm about to leave for work.
Edit 2: Grrrr to vBulletin making me wait 5 mins to edit a post as a new user, grrr -- it's not a new post, so not spam!
I was sort of in the same boat, then I flashed the nandroid backup of 2.3.1 from the development forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093
It will also replace CWR with stock recovery and will apparently do this every time the phone reboots, but you can still have root.
so...
Ok, so is it safe to say that the best thing to do is to flash the 2.3.1 nandroid from the other post then and then go back to clockwork?

None of these random workarounds posted in the dev section by random users who just seem to be guessing at things. Is there any word from a real dev working on allowing currently rooted users to install the OTA without un-rooting or flashing things through fastboot? Either by modifying the .zip itself or by creating a method to flash the provided .zip? I'm tired of seeing posts that read along the lines of "Oh, do this in post X then this in post Y and it SHOULD work, but if it doesn't check post Z and hope things work after that."
Download the nandroid backup that was posted. Restore it using Clockwork, then while still in recovery, choose mounts, and then mount /system, then flash the superuser zip from Koush's rooting tutorial, then you will have the OTA stock + rooted + stock recovery + stock boot + everything.
This is how I was able to upgrade.

Yes. You're restoring a nandroid.
Read this post, pretty much you're rerooting again and another step so it doesn't keep going back to stock recovery. Easy.

From the nandroid backup OP:
"Edit: According to xda member Luxferro the new update introduced /etc/install-recovery which may have not been in 2.3, but anyways, it runs this on bootup, and if the MD5 of the recovery doesn't match what is expected, it reflashes the stock recovery back over, so if you dont want the stock recovery to be flashed everytime you boot if your on clockwork or another non stock rom, just rename it to prevent it from running on boot. And for those of you who want to return your phone back to stock this nandroid will do that for you since it also flashes the stock recovery."
Just wipe and flash Paul's Gingerbread ROM.

Pretty much every time you flash an OTA update you're gonna lose root.
If someone took the time to modify the OTA update so you don't lose root, then it's not an OTA update anymore

Hi
I'm going to update my a500 to 3.1
I have unrootedmy device but how to remove CWM completly????
Please help
Why don't just update via CWM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154492
1) re root your device
2) go into acer recovery installer and reflash to the backed up recovery (or do the stock recovery for your version)
3) de root.
I had to do this to get my update to work.
Do you know where can I find stock recovery for my version?
I have Acer_A500_1.139.05_COM_GEN1
thank you!

When i installed ARI, it backed up my current recovery. When i went back into ARI, my old recovery was the first option. Sorry, explanation sucks, i don't have screenshots for you. I know there are threads with most of the software/firmware elements of most of the different versions, maybe do some digging? This would be the best place to start: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126364
Look in system/etc for a filed called install-recovery.sh. if its there change its permission from 444 to 544. Then reboot normally. It'll overwrite cwm with your stock recovery.

Hi Euclid, are you able to post a copy of that install-recovery.sh file? I don't seem to have it in my system/bin anymore
...That is assuming the file is not unique to each device??
I'm thinking the reason my OTA update wouldnt install is because i dont have the stock recovery menu.
Thanks!
I really don't get why everyone is spazzing over this... If you've already taken the steps to root and install CWM in the first place, why not just install the stock 3.1 image that's been provided in the dev section? It's 100% stock, no need to wait for Acer to stop twiddling their dangly bits...
Floatingfatman, that is exactly what I did, and it worked perfectly. Good advise!

Yeah thats what i ended up doing to update it to 3.1.
Reason i want it back to stock is that i couldnt update via OTA at all (downloads fine but install fails at ~20% with the ! in a red triangle).
I was hoping by restoring it to stock the OTA would work, and so any future updates could also be done via OTA as opposed to finding a workaround each time.
Other than that, it's working just fine for now.

Guys here is some info I wish I had when I got my first Nexus S OTA:
For 95% of you, you don't need to worry about getting the OTA. Only 5% of users get the OTA on day 1. It will be posted on XDA soon after the updates roll out. You will be able to download it and flash it from CWM like any ROM. There will also be rooted versions available.
So think twice before going back to stock to try to get your OTA, it might be a huge waste if time.
My two cents!

I know, I did when 2.3.4 was released. Then I was sitting there stock ROM, stock recovery, unrooted, waiting.... and then the full ROM, both rooted and unrooted, was posted on XDA way before anyone was really getting OTAs. So I ended up downloading from XDA and installing manually anyway, and I wasted a lot of time "going back to stock!"
You don't waste that much time. 3-5 minutes tops
I like going back to stock every now and then anyway. make me feel that my system is "fresh" again lol

okay, I just want to be 100 percent on this. I HAVE unlocked the bootloader/added clockwork and superuser- I have NOT added any custom kernels or roms yet though, can I still take the OTA update and be just fine?
I just want to know 120% if I can leave my phone as it stands with root access but the stock everything. Originally I gained root access simply to do a custom kernel and then BLN- but waited because I was worried the netarchy kernel may provide less than stellar battery life.
sorry for being a rook, Just want to be positive on this.
Quick question if I'm on stock Rom but have the Matr1x kernel can I do OTA with out a problem or should I need to go back completely stock?

You will download the update from XDA and flash it with Clockwork before you would ever get the OTA.
I've been looking at the threads but so far I don't believe there's one that tells you what to do if you've actually installed the official OTA update?
I.e. I have an rooted 2.3.4 GT-I9023 with an unlocked bootloader. With no clockwork or anything, as to be honest the last time I used it (on my old HTC DHD) it made my phone unstable (the phone would sometimes boot up of its own accord and stop at the clockwork screen).
Does anyone know how to re-root the NS after it's installed the official OTA update without clockwork?
Thanks
Edit: Downloading the OTA update won't relock the boot-loader will it?

You cannot get root back without a custom recovery. OTA will not relock the bootloader, you'll just lose root and custom recovery.
You need to flash custom recovery using fastboot, then flash superuser to get root back. There are plenty of guides in the stickies describing the process.
Ok, so i'm updated to 2.3.6 but of course have lost root (never had CWM to begin with on this phone). Anyone know where I can DL CWM (i'm assuming it needs to be flashed via platform-tools directory in the android sdk per normal) and the latest su file?
EDIT: nvm, I found the latest CWM and successful flashed (my method was correct). However I've not been able to find the latest superuser.zip to flash yet. Also, I don't know why ppl say to use the market as I don't see how that method can work. I've already got superuser installed from before I updated but that doesn't help me get root. Only flashing the zip from recovery (as I understand it) would. Which renders the market useless in this regard.
/confused
The superuser app checks to see if you have the latest superuser binary and will download and instalk it. Or download superuser from within rom manager.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Ok..the binary update fails (because i don't have root) so it's chicken and egg as far as I can tell.
You where already told. Flash custom recovery via fastboot. Boot into it and flash su.zip Same way it was done prior to update to the ota. Same as it always was and will be.

You're welcome.
If you stick with a stock ROM then recovery will reflash every time you reboot. To prevent this you can go to system>etc, and change the file install-recovery.init to something else like install-recovery.init.bak.

I'm guessing updating would put my phone in a boot loop, right? What do I need to do first? Turn off the root and flash a stock recovery? Is that good enough?

Yes, updating will boot loop. If you want the update then you may need to flash the stock ROM to get rid of the hotspot mod.
I have heard this update checks just about everything in the book.
But yes stock recovery, and no root for sure.

Im on the same boat but am gonna wait. Unless theres Spark in your area there not much point to do it. Theres lots of issues with the new ZVA update (on rooted and custom recovery phones) and im gonna wait for an easier fix than what is available. The current process is a bit too complicated and not worth it. Ill wait for a simple zip to flash or a totally custom ROM with ZVA already on it. But thats just me.
If you do it... update us on here.
Rename files in fota folder. Freeze the update app.
