Is this safe? - Wildfire General

Hi,
Is the "Shipped Roms.com Buzz Image" safe? I was planning on using the "RUU_Buzz_TMO_UK_1.14.110.1_Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.19_release_130442_signed" file. What are the risks for me doing this to my T-Mobile Wildfire? I don't want to brick my phone!
Can I then upgrade from there to 2.2? Will it make my phone "as new"?
Thank you so much, happy holiday!
(I would post links but the system doesn't allow it)

I am missing some information about why you wanna install that RUU?
Why not just run one of the custom ROM's like wildpuzzle that almost are the default ROM but more or less optimized.
But the page you almost link to are good enough, no danger in using their files.

Hi there,
I currently have rooted 2.1 and want to go to 2.2. I'll no longer need root because I only want it for the WiFi tethering ability, and 2.2 has this included.
I want to use the stock one that came with the phone in case I ever need to return the phone to T-Mobile. They have said the custom ones invalidate the warranty.
I have gone to install it but I'm getting error 170, USB connection error. I've tried connecting the phone in "Charge only", "Disk Drive" and "HTC Sync" modes but none of these work.
Do you have any ideas on how to get it to detect my phone?
Thank you so much!

New G2 Touch (Hero) - need your help.

Hi guys,
I have got my G2 Touch (Hero) sat at home waiting for me and cannot wait to get back and play with it.
I was hoping you guys could help me with the following questions though:
1. How do I know if I should bother rooting it or not? If I root at a later date will I lose all of my other stuff on the phone?
2. How do I know if I have Donut on my phone and if I don't, should I root first or update to donut first?
3. Is there a list of "mush have apps" on the forum... I've spent all day reading articles on "must haves" but was hoping for "real life" feedback from you guys on what I must get.
Thanks

be prepared to wipe everything, as this is the solution for 95% of all problems (people not wiping before upgrade). don't you dare to ask for help before you wiped and reflashed afaik you can get root access without wiping, but i am pretty sure you are going to want a custom rom like modacos rom, and this almost inevitably means you have to wipe.
in q&a there is a thread for what you can do with root. it is not really complete, another try is to search for "root" in the market. most applications that need root access are found by this, so you can see what you could do if you where rooted.

easy one. there is no donut rom for hero (except for a custom one here on the forum, which does not _really_ work), so you don't have it on your phone. imho: don't bother updating to donut rom, unless you know what you are doing.

what about the thread called "must have apps on your Hero" here in the themes&applications section? i don't think it will get any better than that... you need to do the reading yourself, you won't find a post that says "here is a zip with the ten apps you need to be happy" (well maybe you will find it, but i doubt that actually will be happy with it).

Hi kendong2, thanks for the response...
I have read about this update on tmobile's website...
http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=SOFTWAREDOWNLOADS&tab=2
If this isn't the Donut update, is it just an updated version of the original rom?

It isn't Donut - it is just the T-Mobile version of the 2.73 ROM. Since your phone is very new, it probably already has it anyway, but to check go to Menu-> Settings -> About Phone, and check the build number. If it starts 2.73, you've already got the updated ROM.
If you get a 1.xx build number, my advice would be *not* to install the T-Mobile update as it will make it much harder for you to move to a custom ROM at a later date. You should download and install a generic 2.73 that has been pre-rooted.

Dave

Hi again guys...
Checked my Touch last night and it is on 1.76
I'm a bit weary about rooting and installing generic / custom roms for fear of voiding the warranty and then owning a £500 brick...
Will updating to 2.73 from tmobile really make it harder to move to a custom rom later....?

Put it this way -if you upgrade to 2.73 via the T-Mobile RUU, in order to move to a custom ROM in future you will have to "downgrade" to a generic HTC 2.73 ROM via a Goldcard (see here) which is much more complicated when you've already got a ROM on your phone which is "exploitable".
The other thing you should bear in mind is that when Android 2.0 is released for the Hero, it will likely first come out as a ROM for unbranded phones with operator branded versions following some time later. This is what happened when 2.73 was released, and T-Mobile in particular was quite tardy in getting its own version out.
So, if you want to go to Android 2.0 sooner rather than later, you should look at a non-T-Mobile version of 2.73 now.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks very much for the advice guys, going to do as you suggested.
Unfortunately I have more questions though:
1. to load the generic 2.73 I just "oneclickroot" (found the video on youtube to follow) and then download the theme and rename it "update.zip" put this onto your memory card, turn off your phone then press and hold the "home" button while pressing the power button.... keep the "home" button down until you get to the recovery screen then select flash the update.zip as you would a rom. Is that right or have I missed anything?
2. Having a Tmobile G2 Touch rather than a Hero won't make any difference to the rom that I choose will it?
3. Will putting a new rom on lose my contacts or widgets / scenes etc?
4. Can you recommend a nice rom to go for, like what you guys are using? Want it to look nice, be stable but fast
Cheers again for the help guys.
Answers!
1. Can't help here as I didn't use the one-click method.
2. No.
3. Yes. However, if you've synced your contacts to Google, you will get them back again once you set the phone up again.
4. Modaco - nuff said.
Regards,
Dave
For a newbie I can recommend 'the unlockr'-Google it- they have easy to follow vids for rooting and flashing roms for the hero. It's really easy and you won't brick your phone if you have half a brain cell.

Easy as pie,... Pick the rom you want from here,...
XDA's Official HTC Hero RUU ROM Links
... or here,...
Modaco's Stock ROMs + radios in update.zip format for GSM Hero
I have given link to the Modaco page as there are rooted stock ROMs there, could be useful.
.... Put onto SD, then apply update. I assume you know how to flash ROMs as you are using a custom one already,...
If not, check out [Guide] Newbie Guide to Install a Custom Rom [Updated 19/03]
If your still unsure, ask, we can try to help some more.

Yep, exactly the same, wont take long at all. I didn't bother creating a backup as I knew I could always get it from somewhere. Where would we be without XDA eh,.... Still using a Nokia I expect!!!

any other way to flash the official rom beside the way you show me before, actually i bought from 2nd hands, not me flash the hero. so maybe you can help me the easiest way...sorry to bother.
If you really want the easiest way, download and install the official RUU from HTCs website. However, this will make it harder for you to apply a custom ROM in the future.

If that's really what you want:
Make sure you have the usb drivers installed on your PC. Easiest way is probably to install HTC Sync, following HTC's instructions, assuming you don't have it set up already. Then just connect your phone to your PC via USB, download the RUU which will be an executable & double click on it. Can't get much simpler than that

This thread is not for the SPRINT HERO,.... This is for the GSM HTC HERO,.... You could seriously damage your phone using these instructions.
You need to start in the CDMA section.

Actually, it depends on what he is trying to do! If he's trying to install the RUU (from this thread) for the Sprint Hero, it should be fine.

I want to Root but....

I am swimming with the amount of info. I want to root for:
1. have an unrooted phone to add in performance and better battery management.
2. install a custom rom (for the above reasons)
3. install Froyo when available, I don't want to wait for HTC.
4. I don't like HTC sense. I'm using Tag Home
5. remove sprint bs.
Flashing radios, custom recoveries???? I'm lost a bit.
Can I just root via toast method and flash DC3.1 and I'm all good?
I'm a noob and am swimming with info overload!
Yes root and flash a rom and you're good. You might to flash a radio if the rom recommend you updating it for better performance.
Anyone know the radio flash for DC3.1? If there is one?
I have best buys insurance so I can just take in my phone if I brick it but how do i flash the stock rom back if I have to go to Sprint for tech support?

If you do a true brick, you can't and won't need to flash back a stock rom.
Follow part one and two of the rooting / unlocking nand guide. You'll be fine. The official sprint ruu can put you back to stock if needed.
Is this the stock sprint ruu?
RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.6_Radio_1.39.00.05.31_release_171253_signed.zip
or
RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe
What steps do I take to return to the stock rom if I don't want to root? Many thanks in advanced for tolerating this noob!
Its the exe file. Just connect your phone to your pc and run the exe.
Is the file pre-OTA SD fix? If so I guess I have to get the fix.
I assume once full froyo comes out instructions will be given where I can flash froyo?
Just some quick tips. DC3.1 is very bugged, you want DC3.1.1_Test2 right now.
Froyo currently no camera support, might want to wait...comes out next month supposedly anyways.
Requirements are you flash Toasts rooted rom with part 2 (nand unlock), this gives you a proper recovery, etc to flash unsigned roms.
Then go ahead and install whatever rom you like, many don't include the radio update, you can install that over any rom to update it.
Thank you very much!
I'm waiting for the official Froyo to flash.
I can't seem to find DC3.1.1_test2 can you send me a link or point me in the right direction?
Is the the radio file to flash? EVO-1.39.00.05.31-radio-signed.zip
Thanks Again!

Need SERIOUS advice/help before rooting my Desire HD. PLZ HELP ME OUT !!!

Hello people. So let me get straight to the point. I've spent the last 2 weeks browsing the web, researching ROOTING. I've saved A LOT of links & now know wot to consult & where to dload the files in order to successfully gain TEMP/PERM root access. However, I have some questions/concerns/queries before I finally go along with the whole rooting process.
1) I'm currently using Vodaphone & am on a 2 yr contract with them (which is how I got my HTC Desire HD in the first place ). Will rooting my phone cause any problems with them ? I know it voids ur warranty but will I have to pay anything in damages if I root my phone before my contract ends ?
2) I've not saved a lot on my phone, the only valuable thing is my contacts list. So how do I save that ? Shud I use ASTRO or Titanium ? Also, what else shud I make a backup of before I being the ROOTING process ? Finally, wot if I want to use another SIM on my phone ? Will my contacts still b on the phone when I put in another SIM or will they get removed when I remove the SIM I was originally using (Vodaphone SIM) ?
3) What if I want to remove ROOT if when e.g. Android 2.4 or 3.0 are released ? What if I want to upgrade to those latest versions of the OS & I need to remove ROOT access to make that possible ? Is it still possible to remove ROOT access after it's been applied ? But I guess by then there shall b ROMs for that purpose of installing the latest OS.
4) Which is the best MOD/ROM for HTC Desire HD. By "best" I mean which is the most stable one without any bugs/glitches ?
5) Can I have 2 different ROMs on the same phone ? How do I remove a ROM if I don't like it so I can install another one ? Also, after removing a ROM will I have to go through the whole process of ROOTING the phone again right from the beginning ?
6) If I want to overclock my Desire HD, will voltages from the stock battery b enough ? If OC-ing my Desire HD processor requires more voltage for the processor to run then doesn't that mean that my battery will drain more quickly ? Also, I'm an experienced overclocker with desktops & I know that OC-ing decreases the lifespan of ur processor. What abt the Desire HD processor ? How safe is it to OC the Desire HD processor ?
I'd appreciate it if you could help me out with the above questions people. And if there are other IMPORTANT concerns I shud b aware of before I ROOT then plz let me knw abt them too Thank you very much in advance !

1 - no you shouldnt do, the root has no effect on your service with vodafone, i should know as i have vodafone and the DHD
2 - well use Titanium backup, that way you can back everything up and save apps + data, store you contacts to your MicroSD.
3 - ROMS will have things like gingerbread out etc, if you install custom ROMs after rooting then you shouldnt need to worry, and hands down, Cyanogenmod is the best, if your looking for a sense ROM, go for android revolution. Customer ROMS are normally prerooted so no need to worry about rooting , plus updates are quite frequent.
4 - if you want to add or remove a new ROM PM me and ill run through it with you using clockword mod if you install it, if you need any help at all im usually on this forum quite a bit.
5 - OC kernals shouldnt have too much effect, undervoltage works a treat on some 1.22 GHz kernels meaning that you get away with slightly better battery life. but having underclocked isnt everything, depending on signal strength and wifi usage etc, etc, will depend whether you have better battery life.
Hope ive helped.
There is no reason to fear the mighty root. If you ever need to it can be easily reversed.
I felt the same way just spent hours reading and confirming asking in the forums for help now I'm fully rooted and running leedroid latest version nice stable fast Rom and to be honest best thing I ever did you get loads of help and answers just one thing to remember the first root you do make sure your on 1.32.405 as the latest ota update can not be rooted from scratch as of yet

if ur phone is radio S-Off prior to upgrading to 1.72, u can reverse it back.
but for TS's case, I believe his phone is not rooted nor radio S-Off, so dont think he can root anymore with his 1.72.
Well, at least he dont hv to worry about warranty issues anymore.

True, this was my worry about ota updates and why I advised against them in un rooted devices
I'm trying to learn out of the mistakes people make when upgrading. So help me understand this one bit.
If I root + s-off (as provided by the guide on xda) and then upgrade to the 1.72 ROM(either manually or when HTC releases an official update for my region), will I be able to flash out of it to any other ROM? Also, will the phone retain its root state then?

i believe so, although you would probably be safest to radio s-off as well, although AFAIK the lastest update doesn't bring much more than the patch for the root exploit anyway so can probably be avoided completely for now

I'd appreciate it if you could help me out with the above questions people. And if there are other IMPORTANT concerns I shud b aware of before I ROOT then plz let me knw abt them too Thank you very much in advance !

Hi,
Will try and answer or confirm what you know...
1: If you are in the UK, a mobile phone given with a contract is owner by the person who takes out the contract. The operator has no hold on it, even if you cancel the contract. If you cancel you owe the operator the cancellation fee which will cover the cost of the handset.
2: I have found the best way to save your contacts is "in the cloud" as it were. My contacts are saved as Google contacts and as such when you link your account with your phone, the contacts reappear if you have say updated to a new ROM (If you are going to install a new ROM, it is advised to factory reset your phone etc prior to flashing a ROM). The added bonus of using Google is the speed in which the contacts get readded to the phone, or and as a backup, as they are always in the cloud. If you dont want to do this, then you can store on the phone and back them up to your PC using the HTC Sync software. You SIM card has very limited storage, and if you have multiple numbers against a contact, email addresses, other information on a contact etc, you will not be able to store that on your SIM.
3: Obtaining ROOT gives access to the root of the android system. You can do everything you could before ROOT, so the only reason really you might want to unroot is if you wanted to return your phone under warranty. You can apply ROMs when you have root, whether they are official or not. You may lose root if the ROM being applied is official. There are also guides to remove root.
4: Which ROMs are best are down to personal preference. You first need to decide if you happy with just the android/google standard apps or whether you cannot live without the HTC sense interface, and then decide on an appropriate ROM. There is a list on the Wiki.
5: You can only have one ROM at a time. Installing a new one overwrites the old one. If the custom ROM is rooted, and I think most of them are, then you do not lose root. The whole process of install a custom ROM is not just about rooting the phone, you also need to install a alternate recovery console, clockworkmod recovery being the one. Again you need to follow the guides, but if you have installed or your phone came with ROM version 1.72.x then I believe there is no way currently to root the phone, which is the first step.
6: For overclocking, there have been a few kernels released which you flash in addition to the ROM. These give you access to higher CPU frequencies. The voltage required is dealt with by the kernel. You can set the speed via a program called SetCPU. The Buzz kernel for example is overclocked to 1.53GHz I think. At stock speed and up to a certain speed, the processor is actually undervolted, which should give better battery life. There would be a bigger drain on the battery at higher clock speeds obviously. You can set profiles on SetCPU, like what speeds to use when the screen is off, which in my experience have made the battery last longer. With any processor being overclocked, you are pushing the values that the processor was marketed for, so this can affect the life of the processor.
Hope that helps...
Overall though, looks like you can't do anything yet anyway.

i believe so, although you would probably be safest to radio s-off as well, although AFAIK the lastest update doesn't bring much more than the patch for the root exploit anyway so can probably be avoided completely for now

got it! but is it worth upgrading to the 2.2.1 update? Any performance gains? I'm not sure about what rom should I be on for fastest speed, stability with the sense ui?

Oh people
I have the DHD and am not rooted right now. Perhaps i will later, lets see how the stock rom works in daily use. (It stays at home as long as my case arrives)
But to the topic, first of all, if u had read so much topics, there wouldnt be so much questions i think. But ok, back to topic.
The warranty is lost after rooting yes, but if you need warranty just flash back the stock rom (do a backup of your complete system before flashing a custom rom) and remove s-off, root and all the stuff.
There are many ppl that said, htc or any provider could see that there was a custom rom on the phone.
So warranty was ok for them!
Another thing: if using a custom rom, why dont wait until it gets an update? The custom rom is faster and more stable as stock rom, so its no problem to wait for next cfw update.
My dhd is at 1.32 and i wont update until i use my dhd daily and can say if i need any cfw or not.
But i rooted my g1 after 2 days of use, so i think , i will
Sent this the oldschool way, with my G1

I was warning people about this in the past, but was told that flashing an older RUU would allow you to attain root even if the exploit was fixed, does this not work maybe my doom mongering was not so out of place

if you are on 1.72 without radio s-off and root prior to it, you can forget about flashing roms for now.
If you have radio s-off you can basically flash anything, always, so downgrading is possible as well.
I am on 1.72 as well with full root, s-off and custom rom installed.
Why I have 1.72 with root etc is because I waited for one of our much appreciated devs to include 1.72 in his custom rom, so I can flash it and keep root (if the Dev has this included in his rom, which they, as in this case, almost always include)

I plan to use this to root + s-off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537 And then NANDROID for the ROM backup.
Once I back up my ROM, I'm assuming the backup will be rooted to. So when I flash this backup back, it will still be rooted. I can't seem to find how to unroot it now? Could you point me to something I might have missed please? Also, removing s-off

I think u can unroot by flashing back a stock rom via RUU. But don't quote me on that.
stock roms do not have root, so flashing stock rom will have you lose root.
If you have created a backup of your rooted phone's rom, restoring it, will leave root.

Noob questions.

Hi, so I've been reading the forums for a while, trying to figure out how to root my DHD correctly, as well as installing a custom ROM..
I have Software Number 1.37.771.3
I assume this does not need to be downgraded, but just want assurance. Alll the downgrades need to be from 1.72.XXX.X
What is the most popular custom ROM to install?
What does flashing new radios do? And are they necessary?
What does S-Off do?
How will I be able to install my stock ROM back once I install a custom rom?
I know some of these question can be found by searching, but some parts are not clear to me.
Thanks.
Hiya, 1.37 does not need to be downgraded so you CAN root that.
The most popular roms I believe are either ARHD or rcmix hd (but it is down to personal preference, some roms give you things some others don't/can't)
Once you install a custom rom, sometimes you need to install a different radio to get better battery life, gps signal etc etc.
Radio s-off gives you the ability to install a custom Rom on Ur dhd, I'm not sure if its true but I think it is a MUST if you wanna install a Rom.
Eng s-off is needed to flash a radio, but you only have to have eng s-off if you wanna flash a radio.
You can just radio s-off to install a custom Rom and not have to have eng s-off to install a radio.
You can get back to stock by flashing the branded/unbranded ruu through your computer (its easier that way, I had trouble doing it through SD card last night, just run the exe. File through computer and follow the commands) , it will get rid of custom Rom, eng s-off, custom recovery and root all in one go, so all you need to do after is temp root and radio s-on, and you should be back to stock. Or you can do a nandroid backup (someone jump in cos not too clear on this point either)
If anyone wants to jump in and say if I got it wrong please do, but that's what I done last night.
Is your handset branded by any chance mate?
Cos what I done last night was flash the WWE unbranded Rom and now I'm unbranded, cos I used to be branded by vodafone, now all the vodafone crap and stuff has gone from mine.
Oh also you might wanna check before you start whether u can get your hands on a branded Rom cos if you have trouble with handset and need to send it back then your gonna wanna get it completely back to normal.
Anyway hope this helped and if you need anything there's lots of people on here that will help you as best they can.
Good luck ;-)

The most popular ROM is probably either LeeDroid HD, Android Revolution HD or CyanogenMod
Flashing a different radio is not usually required but can give you better performance.
S-off lets you install custom ROMs of your DHD, you cant flash a radio and Im pretty sure you cant flash a ROM without S-off.
The stock ROM (version 1.32.405.6) can be downloaded from CyanogenMods downloads page. Link
This might be useful too. Link
Also HTC Ace was the codename for the Desire HD so if you see HTC Ace anywhere its the right phone.
ARHD 3.5 has just been released.
This was exactly the thread I was looking for, I've been reading these forums for the last week trying to get my head around all the information. Im guessing once you understand all the procedures it starts coming a bit more naturally, doing my first flash tomorrow

Good luck mate, I did my first one last week, it was nerve wracking lol some people like me need a little more help and clarification from more knowledgeable members on here.
But we all in the same boat innit, just don't start too many threads on it cos you'll end up getting a warning like me, it was harsh but I'm gonna have to accept it looool anyways good luck and if u need any help just ask.
And make sure you follow all the steps to the point, cos you could end up with some unrectifiable problems ;-)

It depends what you wanna do, if you wanna unbrand your phone use the WWE ruu, if you wanna return Ur phone back to the way it was then use a official 3 branded Rom, and as you know if you want a particular custom Rom then just flash one of those.
I got my WWE ruu from xmoo's thread, it has a whole list of different ruu versions, so just pick the one you want but I suggest going for the 1.32 xx3 cos you can still root that version if you wanted to.
