Think thats a good deal?
I just debated on the nexus s, traded my nexus one for an iphone 4 and can sell the iphone 4 for $500. I was stuck between the vibrant and nexus s, not too many differences I thought and went with a vibrant on craigslist for $160 happy about that. Just rooted & unlocked it for my carrier. Still could sell the iphone 4 or wait for unlock and use it as a back up.
If you're bored of the vibrant go for it. Nexus S is probably just alittle better if no at all
this is $h!t! how did you got that kind of deal?!!

See i had a similar chance to get a nexus one and i greatly regret not taking advantage of it, so i didnt hesitate saying yes to his offer haha
WTF...why even ask!!! The nexus s is way superior than the Vibrant for many reasons; the main one being that you will be the first to get the new Android OS releases; no more waiting for Samsung to get off their asses and rollout an upgrade. That and that alone would having me salivating at a deal like that.

while it is true, we already have leaked Froyo and it works with ZERO FC, and 2.3 is really very minor update and all visuals have been ported to Vibrant already as well. So the only real update you will get with Nexus S is 3.0, and this is not happening anytime soon. Might as well wait and see what new generation dual-core phones have to offer....like Galaxy S2 etc....is not happy, then i would buy Nexus S.
And remember Nexus S has MANY downsides vs Vibrant.
Those ported visuals don't work like the real thing. Green syncing , white not syncing etc. 2.3 has a lot of changes under the hood.

Exactly.
No Gorilla Glass
No microSD slot
No 720p
No TV out
No Video Codecs
No Bluetooth 3.0
It's clear as day, the Nexus S was a rushed product.
That said, I'd still take the deal if I were you. You'd get more money when it's time to sell, plus you'll get the over-hyped updates first.

Yeah, I realize all of these things.. Out of all of these things, the gorilla glass Is the only real main concern of mine. Because...
1, 16GB is perfect for me..
2. I rarely use the camera
3. I have only used the tv out like twice, using my laptop it is much better quality so its not a concern.
4. I dont even know what video codecs are..
5. I dont own anything that uses bluetooth 3.0 so 2.0 or whatever version this has should be fine.

Video codecs are used to watch videos of 720p (mkv, avi, etc). I'm not sure how phones without video codecs work with RockPlayer but it is an alternative. Not sure if they'll work or not, they should...

Hummingbird JIT optimization on 2.3 is huge for us.
If you can get it with out having to dish any cash, then you should get it. I keep going back and forth on whether I should go out and buy it out right.
Vibrant
If you are using an upgrade be aware that t mobile is making data plans mandatory for the life of the contract and that data plan is associated with that line only. I recently tried to use an upgrade on an extra line of mine only to have to return it because tmobile refused to migrate the data plan and said that I would be charged the 200 dollar etf if I canceled the data plan.
So ya, if the upgrade isn't for your line your bro might get stuck with an extra fee every month.

It wasn't rushed.
It's was we call reference products.
They tend to come with bare minimum feature sets, and not much more.
Otherwise, the phone would cost over $600 unlocked, the way manufacturers have been charging for smartphones lately.
Google simply didn't have Samsung put in the extra features, and the NFC chip probably is what kicked 720p out of the phone (which is an odd trade-off, IMO).
Google left off a bunch of pretty trivial features. It doesn't even have a notification LED.

I'm not gonna lie. I had a response typed up until I got to the above.
I'm gonna guess you're just trying to either defend this device blindly or you're just... well... I don't even want to use that word.
If you don't use anything on you phone and don't require any decent storage, why even waste this much money on a smartphone. Just get a feature phone, that's all you require.

Ok so the Vibrant is not that old but seems like its forgotten already. Well the whole Galaxy S series! Bs since its only like 4 months old. you don't know much about the field and business of technology do you?
The second you buy any electronic device, it is obsolete before you even walk out of the store with it. It's something you have to accept if you make any electronics purchases.

Even though they keep coming out with new phones doesn't mean yours isn't good. Root that baby, flash a rom and fall in love with your phone all over again.

cant wait for dual core smartphones with dedicated gpu.
4.5" screen
5+mp camera w/ flash and dedicated camera button
actual hard buttons
and of course ANDROID
And of course with the same 13-1500mAh batteries these has, so we'll have like 5000 threads about terrible battery life, etc.
Personally, I don't think there is anything great about the Vibrant outside of the screen. That was Samsung's main selling point. The GPU is good, but there are now apps popping up left and right that are claiming "No Support for Samsung Galaxy S."
Yahoo Messenger for Android now has no Support for Galaxy S, Lol.
Not going to bother buying another Samsung phone anyways, but certainly not going to buy another phone with internals outside of the mainstream.
I personally view them going in another direction IRT hardware has a massive failure. That's like buying a Windows Computer with an AMD Processor, and Microsoft telling you Live Messenger isn't supported on you computer because you got AMD instead of Intel, or Microsoft Office won't run on your computer because you're running Windows Vista instead of 7, or WoW won't run on your computer because you got an ATI instead of an NVidia. Massive failure, IMO.
Apps > Hardware.
Then there's the issue of a bunch of apps simply being incompatible due to the phone only having Android 2.1...
If you expect a Nexus S or whatever to change that, then I dunno what to say. 90% of high end smartphones run Snapdragons and most don't run TouchWiz, so developers will continue to target architectures which are the majority - as they should, cause targetting Samsung's phone and ending up with apps that crash and burn on all those other phones would be utterly retarded.

Please tell me your not mad that technology is advancing. Really? Is it such a bad thing? Nobody is forcing you to go out and buy the newest, fastest and greatest device. Personally I think while the vibrant may lack in 2.2 and some other things like flash and a 4.3" screen or HSPA+ it more than makes up for in MONSTER graphics computing, overall speed, a beautiful 4" SAMOLED screen and a camera that takes pretty amazing pics. I did expect better support from samsung considering the phone is across all carriers However I did buy the phone as is so I cant complain too much. it still holds its own against any other device out right now. Plus... The Nexus 2 will basically be a Galaxy S so we should see easy porting to our devices once gingerbread is released and android 3.0.
Hopefully we'll see some advanced implimentation of battery technology to make these handsets last a while with usage. Cause I don't want to see another ZOMG! I got 47 hours of battery.... with everything off.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
Thing about it is, I thought about this too.. What is out that your phone can't do? It can run all the latest apps, and will even be able to support gingerbread. You could have a 5ghz phone, but what good will it do? The 1/4 second that it would be quicker would not be noticeable.
Galaxy S. Maybe the next version will include the P, so it will have a GPS~
Slow down??? Hell no! Speed up with new devices already. And the Vibrant is just fine. I use it, it has an awesome screen, and new updates get uploaded on XDA almost on a daily basis. And I love watching new phones appear. It just means that by the time I get around to another upgrade in about 14 months, the phones at that time will be that much better. So keep innovating, companies, and improving and releasing new phones.

What exactly are you talking about. No one is complaining about technology advancing. People are complaining mostly (and mostly indirectly) about the rate at which hardware/devices are deprecated and forgotten about.
Lots of people come from a long background in using computers, so they are not used to seeing a 1 year old device become "unsupported" for the most part.

Yes, those threads piss me off so much I don't even open battery threads anymore unless it's one I posted in and there's a chance a reply may be directed at me.
Most people with great battery life hardly use the phone. I get 20 hours easy when it sits there in Standby for 18.5 of those hours. Once I start using the phone, the battery is crap. I actually had to uninstall some very useful applications so the battery wouldn't commit suicide.

Yep. Actually noticed the G2 add play 3x tonight. The hinge is crap, but at least the phone works as expected.
A phone doesn't have to be "really that good" to be worth the investment. In many cases, like the Vibrant, when the phone is supposed to be "really that good" it just turns out to be a failed result of overreaching.
I got this phone because it had a lot of storage in it, and it's not like T-Mobile had that many choices when it came to high end smartphones when the Vibrant was released. Some people replying to posts act like the G2, MyTouch4G, HD7, etc. were being sold in stores in July/August.
There was the HD2, and the Vibrant. That's it. The rest of T-Mobile's phones were utter crap.

Buying a phone on a 2 year contract and finding out that the phone isn't even properly supported for 4 months should be enough to piss anyone off.

Cars? Yes. I have owned almost 20 different vehicles in the last ten years.
Clothes? No. I still have some clothes that were "cool" in the 90's.
I've been saying those other phones dont come close for a while. The Captivate is garbage with it's broken GPS and laggy file sytem and Samsungs poor support. I returned mine after 2 weeks. The Inspire is nice but it's an old design with god awfull battery life. The Atrix is the best phone you can buy right now.

I came to the Atrix from a rooted, modded, changed, altered Nexus One No regrets here. Honestly, I flashed a lot of ROMs with my N1 and if I never get to flash a full, true ROM with this phone, I don't care. I like it so much more than my Nexus. The screen (I can see the Atrix in the sunlight!), the size of the screen, the speed, touch sensitivity, etc. Plus I live in a strong AT&T area and do not have problems like some do.
I would like HSUPA enabled, but from what is floating around here, AT&T is supposed to be "turning on" HSUPA at some point.

For me having 1 gb of memory + qHD res screen is a deal maker/breaker

Go for the Atrix you'll love it I'm sure. You said you'd like to root and have a little fun with it, you can hook up the Atrix to a nice sized flat screen tv via hdmi and turn it into a computer. Both the phones have their own stand point.
Atrix on one hand does the deal breaking job with its Dual Core Processor/qHD Screen, but, it has MotoBlur and no Gingerbread in sight yet.
Nexus S on the other hand is Google's own, it has got all the Goodies except the Dual Core Processor/qHD Screen, but has Gingerbread on it already, has a SuperAMOLED Contour Display etc...
Holding two phones in your hands and comparing them side by side will do the trick. Go with what you like.
So far I love my Atrix. Haven't used NS yet, no comments about the performance, but if anyone wants to try different roms, NS is the one. There are a lots of Atrix users not liking the phone because of MotoBlur, which seems ok to me.
Personal Opinion : I like the way the bootloader is locked, so that you will have consistency on your phone, you don't have to back up your phone, messages, notes taken etc every now and then just because you are trying thousands of different ROMs available every weekend.
The Nexus S is clearly faster despite having inferior hardware, scrolling through homescreens and the app drawer is much faster on the nexus S. However, the atrix has the edge when you're actually opening those apps, albeit a small edge. The nexus S will receive more updates than the atrix and it's also already on a new version of the android OS.
However, i love my atrix. The fingerprint scanner (when it works) is pretty darn sweet and a great feature to have. I don't think dual core is even utilized yet, but i hope when it is the atrix will be even better than it already is. Oh, and the nexus S doesn't support 4G (?source). While the atrix doesn't have 4G yet, it should be coming out very soon.

HAHAHAHAH man i love this forum
I switched to a nexus s, I get the same quadrant scores if not higher than the atrix. The phone feels great works amazing and the roms only make it better. There is no lag and the camera kicks the crap out of the atrix. Battery life is phemominal and much better than I had on the atrix, plus it's much more vibrant with the samoled vs pentile.
I would get a nexus because at least for the moment it works better than the atrix.
Not trying to be a jerk, but as someone who has had both devices I can say nexus is much better.

I agree with you but I guess you are happy right now with NS because of the possibility to be able to flash any ROM anytime you want because of the Devs support. I wouldn't compare them both right now, as Atrix is not upgraded to Gingerbread yet. If the NS is still kicking Atrix's butt even after the upgrade, I am all in for this beast by Google.
I still love the stock Android experience, but Atrix's performance is not that bad. It does the job, it performs well. To me, except the VOIP voice support issue, everything else is much better than my N1 and iPhone 4. Battery life is way better than both, higher res screen is great, plus a Dual Core processor is a deal breaker... again, all of this is a personal preference.
I am debating getting the Samsung Within (Galaxy S2) when it's released and would like to hear your thoughts on it. I have not been a big fan of the Samsung devices in the past but I am intrigued by this one.

I agree with you on that one. I think its more about being sure you get the right phone to have for the next 22 months. It's like getting married, you don't wanna make the wrong choice cause its gonna be a while. My biggest concern is data reception. My friend got a nexus s and couldn't connect to 4g when I had 2 bars of 4g standing right next to him. Also, all of the samoled screens I've seen have a color tint to them so I don't know if samoled+ will be any different.
I'm wondering about the tinted screen myself. I hadn't heard about the 4g issue. I always research my future phones but sometimes you just don't know about it till you get it.

Well I've had one samsung phone, and it was beast, it was the 'smart phone' of its day before smart phones as we know rule the playground. Never had a bad experience, and this one has the hardware to match the software; as I recall [could be wrong] samsung wasn't going to lock the bootloader so it should be rooted, potentialy quickly, and as that phone has the hardware, I believe it'll have more support than the notorious Epic. Also have a samsung 32" LED TV, amazing quality, and I think this phone is worth picking up, and if you don't like it, return it within the 30 days.

I have heard that the bootloader would be unlocked as well. That is another thing that makes me lean towards getting this. Hardware wise it looks pretty good.

As much as I have always loved htc, the s2 just seems to be a better phone. In the side by side videos I've seen it just seems smoother than the 3d. It definitely has the hardware, and from what I've heard the new touchwiz is supposed to be pretty good. I'm waiting go see if the whole subpixel thing actually improves the quality up to qhd like they claim. I'm also curious if sprint is going to add a hardware keyboard like they did with the galaxy s/epic. A no gimmick beast of a phone is definitely something I can deal with until the next upgrade comes up. Worst case scenario, if I go past the 30 days and decide I want the 3d, I'll just order a 3d when the wife isn't lookin and tell her I bought it cheap off a coworker.
i'm waiting. played with a SGS2 at CTIA in Florida.. should be awesomsauce & samsung gave out a handful of these devices to CyanogenMod devs so we should see some awesome stuff!!!

I am an HTC man myself. I hope that they dont add the physical keyboard to it. Just a personal preference. I think I'm going to make the jump when it comes out, that is when my wife gives me the money lol.

It's all about how you close the deal. My wife has a crap hero (no offense to hero owners, hers just sucks). So I told her I would go through asurion for a new evo since mine has some water damage, then I would let her have it after I upgrade to the 3d or galaxy s2. That way she could have a brand new evo until her upgrade comes in November. Not only is she bugging me to upgrade, but she thinks I'm a genius. Marriage, at times, is all about negotiation. As far as the hardware keyboard, I miss my touch pro 2 keyboard. I don't mind the thickness of the phone, and it made texting a bit easier sometimes. Also, remapping keys for shortcuts was a bonus too.

exact thought i had, although they cannot be that stupid. according to leaked rumors & ****, Sprint WILL have another keyboarded phone, but supposedly it wont be the "Samsung Within" aka the SGS2
I am also waiting to see what else comes out this month.I'm not really interested in the 3d but am keeping my eye on the rumored within

The s2 is supposed to be out at the end of the month. I'm kind of surprised there haven't been any leaked pictures of the sprint branded s2 (within). They seem to be keeping a pretty tight lid on it so far.

Its the Evo 3D, without the 3D; same battery, has the evo's 8MP camera, Evo 3D hardware and software.

4.65" is including the part for "buttons" since they will be on the screen as there aren't any physical keys. so technically it isn't 4.65"

Depends on your definition of "soon".
As of right now it looks like it will be released around November.
If you want a cynic's opinion, here it is: The Nexus S was old-hat before it was even released. The only benefit was the ease of unlocking and getting updates first, which sounds awesome until you realize that the initial versions of GB were massively buggy. I'd expect the same for ICS. Add to that the fact that HTC is making it so you can easily unlock all of their phones and the list of reasons why I would want one gets much, much shorter. Non-existent, in fact. I'm actively looking for a way to get my hands on a device with hardware that wasn't dated before the first model rolled off the line or wasn't succeeded months later by a phone with a key feature the original was lacking for a more than sub-par carrier. I've said it before, but to save you the trouble of reading it somewhere else, I should have learned my lesson about buying Samsung phones after the Epic 4g debacle but I didn't. I have now and I'll advise anyone against buying their POS devices.

When did I say it did? Never? Yeah that's the answer to that. See there are things called 'lists' where you mention many things that are all related to one other topic but are not necessarily related to each other. Like a grocery list. See cereal and baby spinach are not related to each other but they are both things I need from the grocery store. Just like GB being buggy and my hatred for the way Samsung treats its customers are both reasons why I wouldn't want another nexus device but they are not related to each other. Does basic sentence structure make sense now?

I think he was confused (as was I) by the fact that your conclusion didn't really follow from your argument. You complained about the phone being outdated and you complained about gingerbread being buggy and then you ended by concluding that you shouldn't have bought a Samsung phone. But everything you complained of was Google's doing.

I just picked up an i9020t Nexus S knowing full well that the Nexus Prime is coming. You know why?
Refined Galaxy S hardware
Comfortable rounded edges (looking at you, captivate)
Great ROM support, with ICS on the horizon
Respectable battery life
Pretty freaking fast
So yeah, the phone's hardware is dated. However, the Nexus S is my favorite size and shape, and OC'ed to 1.2ghz with some speed hacks from different places, I can't even imagine wanting for more speed. Now, this is all my opinion, but you can land a Nexus S now for a reasonable price. So get one and have several happy months of hacking!
