I get a MD5 mismatch on nandroid restore, how can i fix that?
as far as I know, you can't do anything about it. the MD5 sum is a checksum calculated once your backup finished.... the fact that there is now a mismatch indicates the file(s) are now somehow different. This is a sign of corruption.
This happened to me quite often when I had an evo... I chalked it up to the ultra cheap SD card I was using... I'm hoping this won't be a problem on the NS.

Question about restore and backup
When I do a backup this is the message I get
no /sdcard/.android_secure found. Skipping backup of applications on external storage.
Backing up cache...
No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.
Generating md5 sum...
Backup Complete
When I try to do a restore this is what I get
Checking MD5 sums...
Restoring system...
Restoring data...
.android_secure.img not found. Skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure.
Restoring cache...
sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext/.
Restore complete
Are those errors I should worry about or is just not able to restore to my sd card so it restores it to the phone memory?
Thanks.
I don't think those are really errors or anything like that. If you don't have an sd-ext mounted then it wouldn't have a file or folder show up so it wouldn't be able to backup or restore it. Unless I'm wrong it's ok for that to happen

Anyway I can fix this backup? I have another backup but it restores the whole data section in 2 minutes...it doesnt seem to work either (((( Help!
apparently karma is not my freind this week

Do you have any other backups you can restore to? I would recommend taking a backup of where you are at right now, even though you obviously want to restore to an earlier point.
If all of your backups are having the same issue, you may have a corrupt SDcard or a corrupt file that is sitting in your /data partition. This is not a definite, so don't freak out, but if you see the same result with many/all backups, I would look into this.
If you can deal with wiping your /data partition... I would take a backup of your current setup, then wipe /data... Then try restoring that backup... If it works, then I would be inclined to believe that one jpeg file may be corrupt, and is causing problems for any backup that has that file in there...
This is just a speculation from the info you have provided and around 6 years of IT work....
EDIT: NEVERMIND! It looks like you posted again while I was typing up my guess, looks like I was off! LoL
yea i was basically able to salvage most of it between the system of one, with the data of another. so im about 75% back to where i was.
obviously i need to either a: keep less stuff on my SD card, or B: use my spare 2gb card for backups...
One thing you may want to try if you are running out of space from lots of Clocwork backups...
Create a folder on your PC/Mac and copy off the folders in the yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm format and copy your backups from your SDcard onto your computer. Then you could delete them off of your sdcard. When I started making a lot of backups I was running out of room and copied some off. Then I deleted them off my sdcard. I have tested moving them back on, and restoring one that was on my PC, and didn't have any issues!
Just a thought...
Hey everyone,
I know there are fixes to a md5 mismatch error I can run on my file. My question is, why does EVERY backup I create has a md5 mismatch? What can cause this? I tried switching recover programs rogue, cwm, etc. Tried different SD cards and using internal storage. Nothing helps. Every backup I create gets a md5 mismatch

Even renaming something in the back up will create a mismatch. Try to leave everything exactly how it is when you make the backup. If you're already doing that, I'm not sure what to tell you.
If I check compression and skip md5 sum, will it make the total size of my backups smaller? Is there any disadvantages to this? Also, do I need to backup the cache?

Can anybody help me out with this?
I have never tried it. But they are already zip files so I'm thinking they aren't going to get smaller. Also you can backup the cache if you want but it's not required. I don't ever backup cache.

Compression will definitely shrink the size of your backups but will make it take much longer. I have not done a comparison of size lately to give you a good estimate.
MD5 sums are good for verifying the integrity of the backed up file and don't use a significant amount of space, because it's just a short string of text.

Running Beans 5 a typical nandroid with no compression 3.1 GB, and 2 GB with compression. Compression also doubles backup time to 11 minutes. I do not use MD5 , but it is used to verify integrity of nandroid file at time of restoration (makes sure file is not corrupted). MD5 will add 1-2 minutes to backup time. Times are using 64GB sandisk extreme microsd card.
Thanks for all your input. From all the info you gave me, I will not backup cache, I will compress and I will use md5 to be safe.
Edit:
Fixed my issue.
I’m getting “CreateTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255 Backup Failed” on my BTV-W09 using the greatslon TWRP US version while doing a backup. I’ve tried internal storage and external SD card. Haven’t tried an external USB drive yet though. Flashing SuperSU worked fine with this TWRP, I did get the error about the 3rd modem but this may be because this is a Wi-Fi only device? I’m going to try it again and then try pulling the recovery.log to see if this gives some indication of the failure. Is anyone else receiving this error?
I received this error last night in my data section as I was creating a nandroid backup in my preparation to install the xposed framework. I was backing up to the external SD card and what fixed it for me was to delete the existing TWRP directory and make sure compression was not checked. After that the backup completed successfully. I did receive the 3rd modem error, but like you, I believe that is due to not having a cellular modem (WiFi only). I also received an "unable to unmount system" error at the very end, but I don't think that is any cause for concern.
Thanks for the feedback johe. I checked the recovery logs and the backup was failing on different files each time on the data partition. So I added a larger SD Card and the backups work now. So turns out it was just a space issue. The backups take a lot more space than what I thought originally, presumably for caching.
