**UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF POST***
**PLEASE , GIVE 3 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME TO READ THIS AND POST IF POSSIBLE**
Hey guys and gals. TweakMan here. Thanks for stopping in. First off , let me apologize for opening this thread. I am totally against opening any thread in the Development & Hacking section unless you are contributing, but this is my only option. So please read on, and show your support for XDA. It will only take a minute to read this, and decide. It takes less to post and show your support.
I opened the "General PPC Questions" thread at the top of this page almost 2 months ago. When I first opened this thread, I believed it would only have 10 to 20 posts max. Now , it has grown into a size I never believed. The amount of support everyone has showed for there fellow PPC users, is amazing!!
This one thread alone has helped answer over 150 questions! It has stopped almost 250 new threads from being opened for a simple question. It's done it's job, and I believe its served this site well!! I am in no way trying to take sole credit for this. All I did was open the thread. It is you amazing people that keep this thread alive and working.
I spend at least 2 to 4 hours a day trying to keep the "Answered & Unanswered Boards" updated, for easier use. But there are still maybe 20% of the original amount of new threads being opened. And I believe I have a solution.
I would really like to see a new section opened in this forum. General Questions. I would be willing to do all of the work, and put the same amount of time and more into it. There are a few features that would help this work. First, in the section, open only 5 threads at the beginning. Software Questions, Theme Questions, PPC Questions, Smartphone Questions, and Other Questions.
Also, and most importantly, make the entire section locked. This should be the only 5 threads that are able to be opened. This makes sure that the section isn't overrun with new threads everyday, making it impossbile to keep organized.
I have a lot of ideas that will make this work. And I promise you if you show your support here I will do my best to make it work as well as and better as the General Questions Thread. But I need your support to even get the moderators to consider this.
When I first posted the idea for the General PPC Question thread, I was flamed and told that it would never work. Look at how well it has done. There are over 300 users that are currently using this thread, with better results than any other site I've seen like this. So this goes out to all of you. Especially the users that use this thread for help. Give me one minute of you time and post a reply here showing you support this idea.
**IF YOU DO NOT SUPPORT THIS, PLEASE DO NOT POST HERE, THIS IS TO HELP XDA. THERE SHOULD BE NOT REASON TO CRITICIZE FOR THAT*******
**LOOK HOW MUCH WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH 1 THREAD!!!!!! PLEASE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT !!!
****************************************************************UPDATE HERE:
****************************************************************
Hey guys. Just giving you an update on the progress of our work here. I just sent the letter to the administrator of the forum, and am now in a waiting game to hear a response.
But until then , I hope you keep showing your support. Also, there are now at least 4 mods supporting this.
Thank you all for your support in this , and the already existing thread. Without you all, each and every one, this wouldn't even be a dream, and the other thread would have already crashed and burned.
And last but not least, Thanks for the ideas. Your guys ideas are what make the already existing thread work. I hope that it happens so that all of our ideas can continue to help clean up this site, and gain our once loved search function back to full capacity !! LOL
So keep the support coming guys. There are over 400 users that use the Questions thread. I hope that you all can return the favor, and show your support here for something that has helped you. This isn't for me, it's always been for XDA.
I will update you as soon as I hear back from the admin.
Keep your fingers crossed and keep showing the love for XDA!!!!
**ALL NEW UPDATES WILL BE POSTED IN THE SECOND POST FROM NOW ON**
RESERVED
This is reserved to update you on how this project is going.
**PLEASE GIVE 1 MINUTE OF YOUR TIME TO POST. IM SURE YOU'VE READ ALOT MORE USLESS THINGS HERE BEFORE. THIS HELPS XDA!!!************

An Alternative Suggestion
Tweakman,
Instead of implementing your suggestion why don't we create another forum called, say, "Development & Hacking Professional".
This new forum would be locked to all except those who had an application or development to submit. For an author to place his/her item in this new forum he/she would first have to submit their item to a moderator. If it passes the test then the moderator opens a thread in the new forum for that item.
All questions, etc, would be placed in the current Dev & Hacking forum which would, de facto, become the Questions & Answers forum you are seeking to create. The moderators could, over time, move development items already in the current Dev & Hacking forum into the new forum.
To make this work effectively, all developers would have to setup a wiki page for their development. Any valuable hints and tips, registry changes, tweaks, etc, would go into that wiki page as support for the developed item.
The upshot of all this is that if you wanted to find a developed application you search in the new Dev & Hacking Professional forum. If you want support you search the relevant wiki pages.
Searches become simple and fast, support is there without the developers being innundated with crap, and we all live happily ever after.
Just my penny's worth.
WB
PS: BTW, what I am suggesting is not difficult. We did something similar for Schaps when he was developing his roms and getting threads 1000 posts long, most asking the same question that had been answered only 2 posts up if people had bothered to read!
To reduce the support overhead on Schaps, myself and another user put together wiki pages for Schaps as a support and reference point and it worked! You still got the lazy fools posting already answered questions in the main thread; however the wiki page fast tracked any search for solutions to known problems, etc.
It can be done if there is the will by all to make this work.
Give me Moderator status and I will be more than happy to put some legwork in to make this happen.
Good idea tweakman. you have my vote.
@wacky
IMHO doing it your way sounds to me as damage control, while Tweakman's idea is (or should) target the root of the problem...
I do like the wiki idea though
on a side note i'd also like to see a "software request" section,
+1 vote... good idea
I posted a thread about this awhile back, I support this idea
THANKS
Thanks guys !! I wish as many that used the thead would give one min of there time for somethin thats helped so many. I am sending a request to the administrator in the morning, and alread have support from several mods. LETS KEEP TRYIN, IM ONLY DOING THIS TO HELP!!!!!! WEVE COME A LONG WAY WITH ONLY 1 THREAD!!! Almost 400 posts in 2 months!!!!
Yup, I support you too.
UPDATE
Thanks guys! Im sending a request to the administrator in the morning under recommendation from several mods, and those mods, are supporting us as well guys!!!!
So keep your fingers crossed and show the love you have for XDA!!! Simply post a quick reply sayin I SUPPORT THIS!!!
**LOOK HOW MUCH WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH 1 THREAD!!!!! SHOW YOUR SUPPORT !!!
keep it rocks
Count my vote
good idea, fully support this.
it would tidy the entire forum cos when you think zbout it a lot of the questions posted in the devices threads relate to more than one phone
+vote
D&H definitely needs cleanup.
EDIT: One more idea: what about creating a Themes/skins development section?
Great Idea!
You have my vote
I have seen so many noob's get flamed, and probably scared off the site forever, for asking simple questions that deserve to have a place to be answered.
Any member that dedicates posts to shaming someone, for what they post, should slap themselves. To those members; you were all noobs once, and now you've graduated to become full fledged ASSHOLES! Pull the stick out of your ass and get a real hobby. This is not your private club, and you definately do not look cool when you do **** like that.
XDA is a community for users of EVERY level. Cut new people some slack, quit playing little social exclusion games, and help someone out every now and then. As they grow in knowledge and understanding, they will treat others, on this site, the same way they were treated when they were beginners.
I THINK A GENERAL QUESTIONS SECTION IS AN EXCELLENT IDEA...NO JERKS ALLOWED!
One More
Good idea.
Not sure the post suggesting that a 'Development & Hacking Professional' thread is opened is a good idea though - we are trying to consolidate the information into one place, not spread it more thinly.
+1 from me!

Ciao, Andrea
This is a development area.
Meaning if you have created something fixed an error then this is where you post. if you have questions please make a topic in the General section this area is getting filled with junk and multiple post asking things that have been posted if you would just learn to use a button we call the search bar at the top right.
I'm not the mod on this Device but as a dev for this device I want to keep things clean unlike all the other areas. I want people to look as the development area and be like ok thats a rom or recover or root and not have to ask questions.
Next is when in a topic please keep on topic. a few topics are 90% junk because people not staying on topic. DONT make posts that say "I hope this is fixed soon or I'm going to get rid of this device" GROW UP go do some reading and help to to make a fix.
I have to add my 2 cents to this. It's really nice if people other their help and discuss things but sometimes threads have to stay clean in order to be helpful for other developers. So please think about if it's really necessary to add your stuff. Otherwise please use the general section.
If you help the developers to do their stuff quickly we'll be able to write how to threads faster for you guys.
Personally I'll pick only a few persons for testing. This will result in less bricked devices

Maybe link the [DEV] thread to a [DISCUSSION] thread in general section so noobs like use can talk about the development of a given project and not actually post in the [DEV] thread itself.
Also, I wouldn't hesitate to report a post or thread to the mod. I'm not sure how active he is here but it could use a little cleaning.

its a good idea but if people have a question since we dont have a questions area like other forums it needs to be in the general area. or they need to learn to use a search bar/engine. im just tired of pms/email/threads that have been answered already.

You would think by now with how prevalent forums are for all aspects of life, people would know how to use the search feature.

What I meant, exactly, was say a developer starts in on a project - they start their development thread and in the first post, add a link to a discussion thread in the general forum:
[DEV] My project Title
This is my project explanation.
Link to [DISCUSSION] Thread.
So basically, you start you [DEV] thread. Then when you're done, start a [DISCUSSION] thread then link the two together. So noobs, right from the first post, can see the link to the discussion thread. If someone posts a question or chit chat in you [DEV] thread, have it moved to the [DISCUSSION] thread.
I know, it's not ideal, just a thought.

This actually sounds really good to me. The only kicker being what is considred on topic and what isn't? Are testing successes and failures relevant to a dev thread? Only successes? Only "breakthrough" moments? To be determibed by an elite group of our super-dev peers? Determined by the original poster?
Its a very subjective issue, dependent on the knowledge level and/or experience of the poster and reader both (or simply based on what one is hoping to find at that moment as compared to how disappointed one is by what they do find instead).
It could also get really complicated really fast.
Ultimately thats up to the OP.
The whole point is that a dev thread can only stay as clean as there are ways to do it. At least with a seperate (though connected) discussion thread, it can be directed. If someone posts in the dev thread, it should be up to that threads OP whether or not it can stay or be moved- at least now there would be a place to move it.
BUMP!! cause people dont like going to the second page. STOP making questions here this is for DEV's that have something to make the Iconia better not hi can i do this. go to the GENERAL AREA
I am not a developer, and this is the only post I can see myself ever posting here.
I enjoy reading this section like I'd read a detailed tech news site. I know that these same people also read the general section, so I can benefit from their input there.
Here, this section, this is their place to work! They share ideas here. They make things happen here. Aside from this post, I never want to clutter their desks, because I benefit so much from their hard work!
Is there any way to just make you guys permissible to post? Maybe you should have to be a dev to post? All can read, but devs would contact the mod to post? With a Discussion Thread linked in that environment, I could see a solution.
I still want to read. Its valuable. But aside from this post, I have no reason to write here. Butt every reason to watch progress, for my own education and to see what might be round the bend
anyone can be a dev. it just means u fixed a bug or made something happen thats what this section is for not hey can some1 help get you tube working or something like that.
doing another bump to keep near the top
I'll get straight to the point....
Despite stickys and forum announcements most of us are still finding ourselves becoming terribly, terribly vexed at the amount of [Q]'s cluttering the dev section...
Therefore, from now on, if you do not follow the rules outlined below, you will be infracted. Break them again and you may find yourself unable to post anything at all on any forum!!
[Q]Surely thats a bit harsh aint it??
[A]Not really....
We've tried to be nice about it but that clearly doesnt work.

If you cannot read and abide by the simple rules in this sticky then I dont know how you're going to manage to hack your device without running into trouble.
The Dev section is NOT for asking questions.....
The Dev section is NOT for general topics..........
All threads posted MUST be prefixed with a description of the thread, [ROM] / [Kernel] etc etc.....*
*(Not planning on being particuarly strict on this. You guys (the devs), know how to title a thread.... just a pointer for new devs.)
Basically, unless your thread is to actually release something or discuss something of a very technical and n00b unfriendly nature, it doesnt belong here!
Pretty simple really.....
If you see something that shouldnt be here then PM me....
I will try to check in as reguarly as I can but I have a few sections to keep an eye on and believe it or not, a life outside XDA
Yes thats right, there is life outside XDA
There's a life outside of XDA??
-gets up and walks outside-
In general this forum should be used for questions, answers, progress reports, and tools pertaining to development boards and non-device-specific hardware. This forum should be used for development relating to the hardware of devices and in many circumstances dealing with families of devices.
Questions pertaining to rooting and installing custom ROMs will be deleted imediately or moved to their respective device forums. No device-specific questions should be asked.
This forum is not a place to ask questions about operation or hacking of operating systems. Topics relating to bricking, bootloops, and other software related topics should not be here. Threads of this topic will be prompty deleted or removed to its specific forums.
If you want information, you must provide your own research first. Datasheets, Web-Pages, references.. If you would like a how-to JTAG or UnBrickable Mod guide be prepared to send your device or work with someone who can help.
Generally threads will be tagged with the related hardware ie... [hummingbird] [OMAP 36xx] [FSA928] or Series of related hardware [GalaxyS]. Software tools should have a descriptive tag [Source], [Tool], [Program] or [Release] and [Windows], [Linux], [Mac] or [Cross-Platform].
It is permissible to post non-original work as long as proper credit is given to the original author. The thread may be moved to general or deleted if the original author would like to take control of the discussion thread. This policy is applicable for this forum only as several tools are created during the development process of a piece of hardware and discarded, forgotten or left unsupported upon release.
Please keep in mind, this forum is for discussing hardware and methods of interface and/or modification. While the discussions may stray into specific devices, it is best to contain individual device related topics in their respecive forums.
With that said, please discuss hardware topics. It's nice to finally have a place we can go to and chat about cross-device hardware.
I think I might have posted my question in the wrong topic thread. How can I move it to it's proper place?

First of all, I want to tell you that, I absolutely agreed with what you had mentioned in this post.
Truly a serious forum to go through.
Thanks for clearcut rules!. I have been visiting XDA-Developers from more than a year. Yet, I did not get much opportunity to ask or to share. Somebody would always be there before me. This is not a disadvantage, it keeps the forum clean. I shall post only when it is crucial and relevant.

Hi all I'm new to android and have been reading a ton
But have a few question?
1. I have a bell s4 Smg-i337 with latest firmware (I believe moto chopper will not work)
But think cw autoroot root method works
Am I correct or how can I root with latest firmware
2. If I install GE rom will it use less storage
(Right now Touchwiz only give my phone like 9.2gb but I read the GE editions s4 doesn't use up as much space)
So will flashing a rom free up space ?
3. Is removing bloat ware bad previously I would just freeze the app but I'm curious about removing it (I read somewhere that if u remove it it screws up ur phone for updates ?
Is that true?
That's all for now thank you

Please read the XDA forum rules.
Questions should be posted in the Q & A section...
However,
before questions are posted in the Q &A section, you should search for already posted answers and look at the "similar suggested links" that appeared while you were posting your question.
I suggest you do what I posted above and also (very important) read the "pinned" threads in the "General" section to help you learn more about your phone. Good luck.
***Edit***
Ok, so you decided to only read the first part of what I said and make a duplicate thread in Q & A without reading the second part about searching and reading BEFORE posting in Q & A..you know, like the XDA rules state?
And for future reference, the little triangle in the top of your post can be used to notify the moderators that a thread needs to be moved to a different section. Making multiple posts is considered spamming.
Very sorry
Please delete thread

These questions attract people to this forum, especially through Google. More people = more knowledge, through questions and answers. If more people come here donations would increase in my opinion.

I see what you are saying and there is no need to get upset, but the problem is that if these questions attract people to the forum, why didn't they attract people the first several times they were posted? The answer is because the people that are making these posts clearly didn't search or read in the first place or they would have seen that the question(s) have already been posted several times and they would have not felt the need to post the exact same question again. If these people were using Google to look for their answers here on XDA, they would be coming here to read about and learn about their issues (the links would show them the threads they need) but instead, they come here and post repetitive, already answered question. This tells me that they definitely are not searching in the first place. The Knowledge is already here and posting the same repetitive questions over and over again isn't increasing it. People aren't searching for it or reading about like they are supposed to (XDA rules). And those rules exist for a reason. 100 posts of the same question don't help anyone and slow down the overall usefulness of any forum. Donations are voluntary and, unless it is a bounty type of situation, are not anticipated. Any XDA developer will tell you that. And frankly, the people that don't take the time to search, read, and learn are not people that are giving donations to developers anyway.

Alright that's fair. Never thought of that way. I try to donate when I can, but your definitely right about the donations.
I agree, it does attract people to the forum, but you do NOT need to post the issue in 2 threads, also, people get tired of seeing the same thing ask over and over, so read the rules of the site, because this is just plain shows laziness.
Its like if someone post something that has been said before and clutter the forum, it only makes the answered forum harder to search for because you have 1 answered forum against 30 unanswered cluttering up the forum pushing the 1 down and making it harder to find.
