Odin vs. Kies... - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi Everyone,
I just laid my hands on the new Galaxy S. I was thinking before porting all my data into it, I will be upgrading it to the Froyo then transfer all the data. I read through the forums/guides, i found there are two ways of doing it. One is Odin and the other is Kies. Since this is my first step into the Android world, i would like to know which one is better and the preferred method of upgrading the phone's OS.

If your just new to the android world go for KIES, because with ODIN there is more chance to brick your phone if you dont know what you are doing..

[Q] Questions about root...

Hi guys.
So I got my Galaxy S a few weeks ago now (16gb, Vodafone UK), and I'm pretty pleased with it.
I've played around with it a fair bit, and installed some pretty good apps.
So I've spent the last week or so browsing the forums and trying to get my head around the whole android OS. I've done a lot of work on iPhone hacking etc in the past, and am more than comfortable with Jailbreaking and modding iOS devices.
My current firmware shows as I9000XXJF3 from *#1234#
There are a few things I just don't "get" with regards to the whole rooting thing, so I'm hoping you can help me out. I've done quite a bit of reading, but have confused myself with the following...
1. I know if I root the phone, my warranty will be void. Will doing a factory reset (*2767*3855# on the dialler), will that "unroot" the phone, and therefore return my warranty? (Kind of like a "DFU-Restore" on an iPhone
2. What is the deal with the different firmware codes (JF3, JP3 etc)?
3. If I root, am I right to think I won't be able to update my firmware through Kies anymore? If so, is Odin the way I would upgrade in future (to 2.2 when released for example)?
4. As a backup, I know I can download a copy of my current FW to reflash if needed. Is the one I need the I9000XXJF3 version, and is Samsung-firmwares still the best place to get it?
Thanks in advance for helping me out with this, and I apologise if any of them are daft/obvious questions.
I got my Galaxy S i9000 not too long ago as I was a previous iOS hacker just like yourself. Rooting and Jailbreaking have there similarities.
1. Un-rooting your phone will return your warranty as long as you are running stock ROM.
2. JM1, JF3, JP3 etc are just different firmware names, like Apple uses 4.0,4.0.1,4.1 etc...
3. Not 100% sure on this. But if you can't update through Kies you can always flash the lastest firmware in Odin.
4. Yep, samsung firmwares is an excellent site, if you got you i9000 with JF3 I guess that would be your 'stock' ROM to reflash for warranty purposes.
If I'm wrong someone correct me as I too are learning more and more everyday about Android
1. There are procedures for unroot, no need to do a factory reset.
2. The different firmware codes are like version numbers, like iOS 3.x, 4.x etc. Everything from JF3 to JM8 is android 2.1 firmwares, and JM8 is the newest. Firmwares with names starting with "JP" is 2.2 froyo firmwares, e.g. JP3, JPC etc.
Not sure about 3. and 4.

Updating the Galaxy Tab to the latest firmware !

Hey guys
I'm running the P1000JXJJ1, FroYo JPJJ2 firmware on my Tab, and samfirmware states P1000JVJL1 is the latest one !
so I was advised NOT to use KIES, and ODIN was better !!
My tab is rooted with OCLF set, Just a quick question, Odin will delete all my data and also I believe that I'd have to re-ROOT the device right?
another question is since I didn't have market out of the box, the product sales code has been changed to XSG.
thanks a lot guys in advance
Cheers
Jackie
if u use oclf, undo oclf b4 update firmware, kies or odin works fine for me, i'll only use odin when i screw up with my tab
and will I have to re root the device and also will ODIN delete all my data?
Hi,
searching for something else I accidentily found this thread.
Maybe my experince might be of any interest: got the galaxy tab 3 days ago, installed KIES and instantly got a message to update the firmware to Froyo JK5. I followed the suggestion to save my data which I regret later, because it took very long (had already copied a lot of videos to the internal sd) and couldn´t stop it. To cut it short:
the update was successful and nothing deleted, just everything in place. Also synchronized Outlook contacts, though at 96% it got stuck - waited a few minutes, then broke up and all contacts had been transferred fine.
(don´t know, if firmware is different for other countries...)
Odin will not delete your data if you did not choose to repartition, no need to use pit file to repartition if you are just upgrading fw from the same region..safest is still via KIES
To correct some mis-information from above. Flashing with Odin can delete your data, it depends on what components are included in the image you flash. If you flash an official ROM with Kies you should not loose your data but there is always a risk of an issue occurring during any flash that could lead to data loss. Unless you flash a pre-rooted custom ROM you will loose root and SU during a flash. These can be re-applied easily to the SGT using the Super One-Click method.
Redardless of what flashing method you use, if you use RyanZA's OCLF you must undo the lag fix before you flash, otherwise you will certainly loose data and possibly end up with a corrupt system that won't boot (I had first hand experience of this early on in my flashing days with my SGS!). You shouldn't really need to apply a lagfix to the SGT as it doesn't seem to suffer from the same lag as the SGS.
Finally, flashing with Odin can lead to product code being changed, especially if the ROM you flash isn't intended for the normal product code of your device. There are various ways to restore your poduct code, look in the Samsung Galaxy S forums for suggestions on how to do this as the basic construction of the ROMs is very similar between the two devices from that point of view. Also, be aware that people with SGS devices have reported loosing their IMEI while flashing with Odin. If this happens you will end up with a WiFi only device unless you backed up your /efs folder before you flashed. There's lots of info in the SGS forums about this and it's worth a read if you are new to flashing. I haven't heard of anyone with a SGT loosing their IMEI yet but it's worth taking precautions.
Happy flashing folks!!
thanks a bunch guys, I'm now running the latest version !!
was just trying to install the latest gingerbread theme from the forums !! will let you all know how that went

Go to the Android Development section.
Look up Overcome and BOCA for the Galaxy Tab. Both a great however I prefer BOCA. The current release is 2.3.4 but 2.3.7 is in the works.
If you follow the instructions for BOCA you will have a GTab that feels like it was newly born again.

Yes. Follow the instructions on the magrathea site or overcome
Use overcome instructions to instal stock GB 5. It tells you the pit and modem to use for your tab.
Then install the overcome kernel and reboot. It will root the tab and format the storage.
Then you install the Boca zip over the overcome kernel.
If you just want overcomes Rom follow their instructions. They make it simple

Upgrade from Froyo JPN to Gingerbread

Hey guys,
my dad bought his SGS on eBay and he got it with Froyo/JPN.
He never updated the rom since he got the phone, last year.
But now he wants to install the official Kies-Version but Kies says, that he can't update from his JPN-Rom.
Normally, I'd just backup everything and flash an official ROM via Odin, but that is not what my dad wants.
The situation is a bit complicated and I don't wanna go to much into detail.
The fact is, I need a way to get the official Gingerbread without loosing all data of the phone.
Any ideas?

Need help with rooting and Honeycomb

Ok so I am pretty tech savvy.. but have no experience playing with Android's backend. Basically I have been using my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for over 6 months without a problem (on honeycomb) but since it forced an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich everything has been laggy -- especially video. The youtube app is unusable unless I switch to Standard Def video. So I want to root and flash back to a version of Honeycomb.
I apologize for being a noob and probably asking a question that's been asked a thousand times, but how can I do this? Samsung tech support has been useless.. they just keep telling me to factory reset, which hasn't change a thing.
Thank you
Flash CWM via Odin and then flash a custom Honeycomb ROM.
Search for your rom and correct variant from Sam firmware. Com
Flash it with odin. No need of rooting.

[Q] Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Help (T-mobile) SGH-T779

OK, I walk into a client yesterday and hands me three of these. The desired end result is to get them all running on ICS becasue Jelly Bean isnt certified to use a piece of software that they need to run.
Well, he tried to this on his own and managed to soft brick it. I can get to Odin but any attempt at trying to push what I think is a valid ROM to it triggers a reboot as it should but then it just sits on the samsung screen.
The version of Odin I am using is 1.85
The ROM I am trying to push is: cwm_recovery_espresso10att_childofthehorn.tar(Only one i could find that I thought might work)I just want to get this one to boot.
Something that I have noticed and not sure if it is an issue is the drivers. Not all of them installed but Odin did see the device. I cant currently get the device to power up so I cant tell you the exact one.
As for the other two. Is there a tried and true method to downgrade these two devices? What ROM should i use? Is there a way to backup the current ROM as a recovery point. etc.
Sorry for all the questions. I spent most of the day yesterday plowing through google and this forum and it appears as though this is not a very popular device thus not a whole lot of information on it.
Also should this work on the two that curently boot up.

Thanks in advance for any insight and/or advice.
Why are you trying to install ATT ROMs on the t-mobile tablets? If you want ICS stock for the t779 then go to sammobile.com, hit the firmware tab, and select the ICS ROM for your tablets. You will need to register there to see the downloads. Use odin to install.

you can find official tmobile firmwares at sammobile and then use odin to install. If you need to root when you are done follow instructions here
there is an official ics rom there
