Hey again gang,
I bought a used G1 on craigslist for $25 a week ago.
This thing has been dropped a ton of times and a very small crack in the upper right corner of the screen, but the screen works fine. It powers on and operates 100%.
The problem:
The screen randomly goes out and fades to a black screen but is still back-lit.
The rest of the device is still functioning and operates normally. (continues to play music, doesn't lock up, etc).
At times, this happens when I press one of the bottom four buttons but not all the time. I could just be reading a website and not touching any buttons and the screen will 'fizzle out' and not come back.
The ONLY way I can get the screen to respond is to press the red/end button and make sure the bottom buttons are not lit... then wait 5-20 seconds, THEN press menu to wake up the phone again. At this point I stand a 25% chance the phone will activate the screen again. It WILL wake up the rest of the device correctly every time... just not the screen. 50% of the time I have to let the G1 sit for a few minutes in 'standby' mode then try again.
(i am not a novice with Android phones and know this is not a back-light settings/timeout issue.)
At first I thought "This is a simple short somewhere!", but I am not so sure...
When the device stays on I performed the following tests:
* Applied pressure to the screens surface in every direction and can not duplicate the problem.
* Applied pressure to the movement of the screen in every direction and can not duplicate the problem.
* Applied pressure to every button on the device and can not duplicate the problem.
* Applied pressure to the chassis surface (completely) and can not duplicate the problem.
My next thought was "The guy i got this G1 from dropped it in liquid. I need to remove any mineral deposits from the internal parts!"
... I then gave the device an alcohol bath for 1 minute.
(relax... it was 100% alcohol not 70%)
After letting the alcohol dissipate for 2 days I inserted the battery and started the G1. All was going well for about 20 minutes... then the same 'fizzle out' problem happened.
My next thought was "Maybe the battery is damaged?!?!!"... but then I remembered that the rest of the device still continues to function properly. No lock-ups or anything. Just the screen 'fizzles out' and fades to black but is still back-lit.
I will try a friends battery just to rule this out, but I am not optimistic.
This G1 is not my primary phone. If I can't figure this out I will probably just hang on to it and use it to test apps I make, so it is no big deal.
What do you think the issue is?
a) the screen needs to be replaced.
b) the motherboard needs to be replaced.
c) the battery needs to be replaced.
d) the device has lived a good life... don't waste your time and money.
no tips on this problem?
never mind...
in a fit of rage i smashed it with a hammer.
the good news is, i don't have this problem anymore =)
kidding.... i sold it on Craigslist.
Seems it was jus the screen that was jacked up man, maybe the ribbon that connects the screen to the Mboard was damage/worn out
hey guys, i have started experiencing weird issue with my hero since last week (bought it last december). the sense ui behaves weirdly and when moving across scenes its getting unpredictable with the touch response. if i go back to my home screen, it still feels am trying to oscillate between multiple screens.
on top of it, using smart dial has become a pain with its unpredictable behavior.
Though factory reset would help but now the touch is unresponsive that i couldnt sign in to my google account as keypad doesnt recognise my entry.
any one experiencing this issue? on top of not getting androind 2.1 this has been a real bad week.
any help is much appreciated.
cheers.
Go into the recovery menu and do whatever thar? I'm not sure this will help as capacitive screens seem quite failsafe, contact orange/insurance

Yeah I have the same problem, and factory reset doesn't help...
I'm gonna go to the Sprint store, and you should contact your carrier support. This problem is caused by device overheating, which damages the inner LCD screen. This screen makes the outer glass or reinforced plastic screen responsive.
It's free to fix with insurance, and $100 without. Of course, there is the chance that your carrier could be nice to you and replace it for free...
similar problems on my end too! gonna go to sprint soon
I have had this problem with my HTC hero on T-Mobile here in the UK earlier this year. Took the phone back to T-Mobile and they sent it off to HTC. After almost a month without my HTC I started to get annoyed. Eventually I got the phone back and was told that the main circuit board had been replaced.
The phone's been ok for about three months and now it's started again but appears that it's only the bottom part of the screen thats affected, where the three touch screen buttons are.
The phones going back again today but interestingly I worked out that it only seems to do it when the phone has been in my pocket and has got warm. The effect is that I can't press the touchscreen 'Phone' button or any of the buttons at either side of it but if i press any of the icons above them the phone button will be activated. (wierd!).
Now here's the thing, if I leave the phone on a flat surface in a cool air flow for a few minutes then everything goes back to normal. Which leads me to think that the problem is temperature related.
Regards
Quite strange, mine has started doing that too. Only when its warm though... Lol.
HTC has confermed to me that many Hero's have a bad touchscreen.
They will repair free under waranty.
Hi,
I've read on here about people having their screens on their HD2 die however I have a weird situation with mine. One day end of last week my battery dropped below 10% while doing alot of messaging and as soon as I received the low battery warning my screen would not respond whatsoever. I got home later and plugged it into the charger and it came back to life but not 100% perfect it would work but irratically where I'd select something but another area of the screen would be selected and so on until I turned the screen off and on again. Once I did this it worked fine for a little while then repeated the process.
Here's the weird thing after some time today it decided to die on me completely where it responded to nothing so me getting frustrated I started holding down the hard buttons and swiping away with fury and the screen responded. I've now worked out through process of elimination that while holding the back button the screen will work fine but as soon as I take my finger off it stops. Has anyone ever witnessed this before? Is it definitely a duff screen that's just given up over time? I'm still within my 18 month contract so can phone up O2 and get them to repair it if it's a hardware fault that they don't put down to wear and tear.
Thanks
Sounds like hou might want to send it in for repairs as it might be the digitizer going out.
Cool thanks for the quick response, I've contacted O2 and hopefully won't take them long to get back to me.
The top part of my phone does not respond to touch anymore... it is impossible to bring down the notification bar... and once in a while the whole screen goes unresponsive.. tried factory reset but still the same problem..
am having the same problem since 2 days back
after reading some of the posts i found that the Digitizer For HTC G6 Legend A6363 should be replaced with new one i ordered mine from ebay
ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5039.m570.l1313&_nkw=Digitizer+For+HTC+G6+Legend+A6363&_sacat=See-All-Categories
waiting for the item to be delivered
I've also got a touchscreen issue: the area of the notification power widgets is unresponsive... the rest of the screen works fine, but I don't know for how long :/

Do you have widgetlocker, by any chance ?
Or a lockscreen replacement which disable the notification bar during the "slide to unlock" state ?
I didn't know there was such thing as widgetlocker. I use CM7 latest nightly, never seen that thing.
I also facing this problem from last 2 weeks and i also think this is digitizer problem. If anyone else found the solution else changing the digitizer, then please post.
This is beautiful phone but htc added a poor quality things in it, due to which many users facing such problems.
Nah.. I dont think its because of widget locker.. its the digitizer..
well that's a shame, gotta buy a new digitizer on ebay after just over 1 year of use...
I know.. this sucks... Im planning to upgrade though.. Any of u guys have any suggestion?
Depends on your carrier if you want suggestions for an upgrade.
...but that would drive the post off-topic.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
I have the same problem. my screen doesnt work anymore because some water got in from the grill above the screen :S
should I try to take apart and dry off or shall I buy a new digitizer directly?
I think it may be a good idea to try disconnecting your digitizer and reconnect it as it just might be helping. I did it on my girlfriends legend and it has been working perfectly ever since. Maybe a good idea to at least try that before buying a new one. So i guess it could be in the connector to? At least this worked for me.
My touch screen dosent work at times. but after rebooting the phone the problem becomes solved. But the problem comes again after a week or so. Any suggestions guys??

I also have this problem, but if I wait a couple of minutes the touchscreen
becomes responsive again. Half of the screen works when it's unresponsive (right half of the notification bar and down). It's quite annoying but I cannot afford a new phone at the moment.
I'm also wondering if this might be temperature related, this problem reoccurred very often during the summer but stopped during the winter. But now (spring) it's back again.
My problem got worse and the phone became totally unresponsive, changed it, got a new phone.

exact same problem here, mine works when it feels like working, totally random, I simply can't understand why, I doubt it's the temperature... I think its in the device theres something wrong, I smack it numerous time and it works right after a big smack on the screen, or rub your whole hands on the screen, also, the angle you are holding the phone affects this problem, if none of these work, a phone restart always makes it work at the beginning. Oh boy did my phone took and taking much beating... oh well, I wish I could permanatly fixed the problem here, as I was thinking of handing the phone to my brother when I upgrade, I'm using CM 6.1.
I still recommend the same thing that i posted earlier here, her screen still works perfect.
I had the same problem few months ago. The problem is with the touch digitizer. I bought a digitizer on ebay and replaced it myself. After that my phone has been working fine. Its not that hard to replace it if you have a small knowledge about hardware.
I use to get that unresponsive screen issue only in the summertime, plus it gets worse if I add humidity (read: sweat). I just need to give it some time then to dry off/ cool down outside my pocket, and it's all fine again.
Anyone having touch screen only issues? There's not a single crack on screen, I've always treated the phone very well.
I'm thinking whether I should replace the whole front, but curiously only my touch screen is not working, display is OK and works well using SideSync. Also, the entire touch screen starts working at random times (I haven't been able to figure out the conditions, it's not hot/cold or pressure; I've used a hair dryer, a refrigerator and heavy items on top of it).
In fact, it worked for a month after it started malfunctioning (initially it didn't work for some hours, and then worked again). But now it got worse again. It's not software as I've tried XtreStoLite and now I'm back to stock. Should I replace the whole thing?
Oh, I have the G900H.
Sounds like a bad digitizer. It would be wise to shop for a new one before it goes out completely.
