My wife and I both brought each other EVO's for Christmas......
Im upgrading from Hero and I got her to finally leave her BELOVED Blackberry's....lol
can't wait to things running... and besides rooting
what do u suggest I do next ??
what's a EVO Must? lol

Screen protector and an Otterbox case lol
Sent from my EVO's 4G You?........I thought so

Extended battery

tell her to buy you a brand new car so you can plug in your brand new phone in and listen to music :x

I suggest you RESEARCH a lot. Find out what you want to do, ask questions, get answers, and go nuts.
I recommend the ROM Wiki in the android development forum, check em out and see which you like when you're ready to start flashing customs.

Nice screen protector that comes with the CM Barely There case.
All smartphone enthusiasts commented on the niceness and the low profile of that case when they saw it.

First root, then flash Myn's Warm rom rls4. I'm kind of a noob. Tried every rom out there and if you want your 4g working and everything Myn's the best and fastest. Also for awesome battery life flash Calk's kernel. I'll give you these links. Both me and the wife are set up like this. The rest is up to you. Bookmark this website and refer to it like a bible. Also a great theme to use is Riptide's colorNclear. We have some of his addons as well, the speedo batt is really cool. The updated launcher pro is a great launcher. It has so many options. Well enough, her are the links.
Myn's Warm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471&highlight=Myn
Calk's kernel- I use 131- scroll down to second post- look for "SBC for Netarchy's CFS More Aggressive 4.2.1 (also known as 131)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876590&highlight=calkulin's
And last Riptide's theme I use V9 the one on post #2 with slayers transitions, allows you to add all the cool naddons. Oh, I also have the blue dialer. He has several colors available.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727117
Now one thing I found out if you dont already know is
1. flash rom then reboot
2. flash kernel then reboot
3. flash Riptides theme then reboot
4 then if you want the addons you can go ahead all at once without rebooting in between each one.
If you try to flash the rom, theme, and kernel without rebooting it will stick in a bootloop. If you have any questions about any of this fell free to hit me up [email protected]
Have fun!!!

If you don't have 4G/don't care for it and or HDMI, I suggest checking out CM6.1.1 Rom and read alot (Especially OP)

I recommend not flashing at least get a feel for Android, sense and the evo before moving on to other roms. I do appreciate the roms and what not but be prepared to deal with non stop issues with custom roms. If you don't mind tinkering with your phone everydAY to get it to work right then maybe custom roms could be your thing. I use my phone all day everyday but its because I use it, not because I'm trying to get things to work " better". I have been down this road briefly with the evo, but on my tilt 2, I was a Rom flashing fool.
I would recommend rooting but staying stock over all. a while back rooting the evo was simple via unrevoked, I don't think that method works anymore. Why root? Well WiFi teather is the main thing I rooted for. You can run apps like adfree, and of course you can flash roms. Oh and if you root you can put a custom recovery that let's you do usefully things like nandroid backup and restore. With this you can a complete image backup of your phone settings, apps and data.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

In general, yes some roms require a lot of tinkering.
But some (like myns rls4) is out of the box stock experience perfection IMO. Since his ROMs are based on the stock OTA's and kernels, they share a lot of the good stuff of the OTA roms, without the bloat, and with added asthetic effects as well.

Thanx for all the info and tips... I'm ready for root ... think I'm gonna use the one from unRevoked .. thanx again

No screen protector. Believe it or not, it doesn't need it but get the otter box case--worth the money. My Evo gets beat up a lot and and my three-year-old son plays Angry Birds and bangs it around. Tests have been done on the Evo without a screen protector and it's surprisingly resistant to scratches.
I suggest you DON'T root it for a while and see what you can do with your phone, you'd be surprised. Unless of course, there's a specific ROM you'd like to try.
I rooted my phone because I didn't like the look of SenseUI and wanted to try CyanogenMod 6. Otherwise, I wouldn't have rooted my phone and just left it stock.

must root, just wait til there a 1 click ,everything else is role of the dice. Warning you will become a flashaholic, so many great roms and kernals.
have fun

Do not use unrevoked

why?
i never ever had a problem with unrevoked....

Unrevoked does not work on newest hboot. I would not even attempt to root and nand unlock until unrevoked has the tool to do it. I see alot of people bricking their Evo's, killing 4G keys so that it never works again, and alot of other problems.

You should ask in the Q&A section how to root your setup. Write down the hardware#. Its in menu, settings, about phone, hardware info. Also in software write down PRI version, software# and possibly Baseband. Now power down. Once off, hold volume down and press and hold the power button until the screen comes completely back up. Now you're in Hboot. Write down the hboot version. Now ask a question about how to root your phone and include all this info. You should be able to get the right answer.

Woah someone mentioned Otterbox cases. The cases they offer for the evo are terrible! Steer clear especially of the Defender. I have the defender and commuter both are junk.
Check out tridentcase.com their cyclops case is my favorite so far.

Seriously? No. Don't do that. Well, do everything up until the part about making a new thread to ask how to root. That will just piss people off. There are already threads with step by step guides for rooting whatever hardware you have.
Instead, make note of your hboot version and take a trip to the Android Development and Hacking section of the Evo forums and look for a thread with "[ROOT]" in the title, and make sure the hboot version in the title matches yours. All the new root guides will specify which hboot they root. Everything you need to know should be in the guide.

Oh another small thing, you never hear any complain about the stickiness of the screen . I didnt like it so I got a Matt finished screen protector. I found them on eBay @ 3 for $5. They do take a bit of quality away from the colors but I would say it only hurts the quality by 5%. In return your finger will slide across the screen so much easier. It was worth it for me.

Just got this phone...

Ok so I just got this phone (coming from a DInc), just wondering what ROM is the best one out there. I am already rooted and have clockwork installed, now itching to put a ROM on and get rid of Bing lol.
Did you flash Clockwork in Odin? You can't do it from ROM Manager on this phone.
JT's super clean is a safe bet. Blackhole is another popular one.
Correct you need to flash it through odin ie clockwork. I have used alot of roms so far but I like the black hole build you're own. Many options and the recent v1.4.1 is really nice. Sonsofskywalker is a great dev and keeps up on his stuff.

Also check or geekniks stupid fast kernel 1.2.3 you can use many other phones boot animations.

Honestly Ive seen absolutely no improvement in using a custom rom vs launcherpro over stock. Your better off keeping it stock for now untill 2.2 comes out.
But if your even smarter you return the phone. Dont throw away the box, you like me might not be happy with it and get stuck with it. I dont think its actually the phone im unhappy with....but more android. Android has become a disapointment to me. An OS is only as good as the applications it has.
I was a 3 time Iphone user....then switch from att to verizon in Nov 2009 and have gone through a bunch of droid phones. On Verizon its the best choice. But when Windows phone 7 or Iphone hits next year many will be gone.
I know many of you guys will chew me up over this. But I gotta speak the truth,

I had an iPhone... IMO the iPhone is a toy. I plan on giving this a go for 30 days and see if I like it or not. If I dont I will return it and go back to my DInc.
Thanks for the advice on the ROMs guys I will download that one now
Also, is there anyway to get Bing completely off the phone? And what about when I hit the search button to be able to get directions like I could on my DInc.

Yes, there is a way to get Bing completely off. I will tell you if you just read the stickies at the top, you probably didn't need to post this.
If you have root access, which is easily done, you can then use install CWM. Once you do that, you can install jt's super clean rom. That'll take care of your issues.
If you don't like the way the current launcher you are using, install ADW or LauncherPro. I personally recommend ADW as it is open source and well developed.
But again, you should have posted this in the General forum. And you should have read the stickies before posting.
Can you imagine what this forum would be like if everyone who purchased a Fascinate posted saying exactly what you are saying???

My bad. I do have reading comprehension issues...
Anyways, depends on what you want, the good ones are already in ROM Manager to download when you feel like.
Sonofskywalker's ROM is neat in that it erases everything stock and leaves only what you want to leave in there.
JT's is simple and clean.
Deoxdexed is not bad, but it does come with a theme if you're into that.
I used "Super Dark" I really like the layout, but now all my haptic feeling in the phone is gone
Ok I got it working, I flashed the stock kernel to the phone... seems to be working properly right now

[ROM Q] What is the latest or best (in your opinion) MIUI Rom for the EVO?

Just as the Title asks. I've looked but some threads are really old. So what do you guys think?
Also, what is THIS lock screen!? It's awesome and I love it!!!!!
Thanks in advanced guys and gals!!! Another thing i was looking for was those backgrounds with those sexy girls wearing headphones and it looks all artsy and ****. cant find the plain backgrounds anywhere....
Well the most important thing to know: a new build gets released every Friday form the Chinese team, then a English team ports it to EVO usually over the weekend for a weekend release. So every week there's a new build.
Latest _English_Port_ is 1.14 ... but 1.21 just got released today (revs are by date) BUT the Chinese team found a bug and is supposed to be releasing a patch tomorrow. The MIUI team responsible for porting the weekly builds apparently already ported the 1.21 but isn't posting it as a official build yet as they are waiting to see what the original dev team is releasing as a patch first.
I would say the current 1.14 is easily the most stable build, the new 1.21 coming out has some UI changes, so it could actually introduce bugs, but only time will tell. Honestly though MIUI has come a long long way.
I really like MIUI rom but not having multitouch on the gingerbread keyboard kills it for me. Hopefully they can get it working soon.

This 1.7 seemed to run the best for me with the included kernel 1.14 had a lot of reboots. I loved the UI and the built in extras like the traffic monitor and the blacklist options but found it too unstable for me. I went to evervolv 2.3a15 and love it so far. Gps doesnt track as well as miui but its an apples oranges comparison. Basically if you can get a stable daily driver miui going on your evo then enjoy olit. The thread in the general section has a lot of believers for sure.
so far 1.14 has been the most stable for me, but myself and many others have been experiencing a problem where whoever we are talking to hears an echo of their voice. The devs are gonna try to work that out for the next build which should be awesome. I'd wait till the final of 1.21 is released.

Okay, so after looking over MIUI and the themes and lockscreen mods I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY RREEAALLLLYY WANT IT!!!!!
But...there's just one problem...
After looking over the directions, and the HBOOT S-OFF thing, nothing seems certain. So many different sites and threads say that some this way doesn't work, this way breaks your 4G, and I can not for the life of my find out how to simply just get MIUI on my flipping Evo! To be honest, from everything I've looked up so far it looks like a ****ing death trap. No joke.
And whats up with partial English? From what I've seen things look like they're in English. How much is still in Chinese?
Is there anyone out there that can show me (or tell me) a very direct way and not an "iffy" way of flashing MIUI. I have Clockwork and I don't know how to check to see if I have S-OFF. I got my Evo 4G the day it came out, so does that mean the way I rooted it back then turned S-OFF for me?
I thought S-OFF was only for people who got the new OTAs and couldn't root their Evos.
I'm sorry but MIUI ust confused the HELL out of me and I'm so willing to take a leap of faith because I want it so bad, but bricking or messing up my Evo ust isnt worth it. Help anyone?
My whole ROM is in english. I'm using the current stable release and it's the best ROM I've used after UD.
The one thing I noticed is that my 3G speeds seem to be slower. I'm on wifi a lot so it isn't too big if a deal but still annoying.

Well, if you have flashed a custom recovery(Clockwork), then I think you must have s-off. The easiest way to check your s-off status is to turn your phone off, then reboot by holding down power+volume-down. The phone will boot into the h-boot screen. At the top will be several pieces of info including your s-off or s-on status. Make sure you do not have any custom roms or other .zip files in the main directory on your sd card before you do this as the hboot will try to flash it when it detects it.
The very first post in the general forum has a lot of really good info as well. Another excellent helpful resource is the IRC channel for the Evo. The link is in the post.
S-off just means security off, by the way. You can't flash custom roms or other stuff until you have s-off.

Wow. That cleared up quite a bit! I'm pretty sure I have a few custom ROMs in the main directory of my SD but when I flashed HBOOT it didn't automatically do/flash anything. I checked and I had S-OFF, I guess it was obvious.
So MIUIs flash ust lke any other ROM...?

yes they just flash like a normal rom. But since they do release an update almost weekly, it would be hard to do a complete wipe everytime and titatium back up everything. so miui already has a Miui Backup program in it that will make changing to the next release go smoothly without much of a hassle.
I flashed the MIUI ROM last night and my phone rebooted on its own like a handful of times when I was sleeping. I kept hearing the vibrate sound and seeing the white "HTC EVO 4G" screen like when you first turn on the phone. NOT happy!!

My Experience Thus Far

Just got my shift today, and so far I'm head over heels with it I know I can't give a legitimate review until I've had it for at least a few weeks, so I'll make sure to pop back in after I've had it for a bit. The only complain I have at this point is the volume button placement; I've been accidentally tapping it as I close the slider. I have found a solution though! Get in the habit of placing your thumb a bit more to the right while using the keybboard, OR moving one or both of your thumbs to the top and bottom of your phone before closing the slider.

Glad to hear you're liking it so far! I've had mine for two days now and I'm proud to say I'm also head over heels.
I didn't think I'd be able to stand running Sense again, but it really flies on this phone. Volume placement doesn't bother me. Only thing that does is bloatware (man HTC really put a lot on this one!) Most of that is already gone, however.
I was looking around and it seems like there is no permanent root yet. Did you temp root and remove the bloatware? What are the downside to temp rooting over per rooting?

Yes I did.
The only downside I see is use of what root users deem necessary apps doesn't stick on reboot. Well, that and the obvious lack of rom selection.
S-Off is just a whole different game. I'm used to using fastboot commands, etc.
We'll see permaroot before too long and I'm sure we'll have great rom and theme selection after that.
Sorry for the stupid questions, but what exactly is a ROM? I'm still pretty new to the whole Android scene ;( S-off and Fastboot Commands as well

Think of a rom as a modified, sometimes heavily, version of the phone's operating system.
You'll see AOSP roms, that's Android the way Google meant it to be.
Sense roms, modified versions of HTC's releases.
I would give you a few great links but I'm on phone at the moment. I'll get them to ya a little later.
Haven't temp-rooted my shift because I thought I read that any bloatware you remove will come-back after re-boot. Can you comment?

I've seen reports of both.
Everything that I have removed has stayed gone. I haven't rebooted, but my phone has dies, so that's essentially the same thing.
I'm waiting for perm root and some healthy ROM development before I go back to the Shift. I thought thse things were like roted within 2 weeks of thier release though?
@Nmott93 - I've gathered a small collection of links to better guide you through your questions than I myself can in words.
You'll notice most users in these forums are extremely helpful. I think the biggest pet peeve is when people ask questions that are all ready answered in the op. Don't worry about them though!

AOSP: Android Open Source Project - Home Site, lots of information.

Real noob to Andriod and DHD

Hi all,
Really am new to all this. bought my DHD yesterday and the screen broke within hours, so after returning it for new one today i have a new phone again.
Few questions i would like to ask, that even after searching and doing some research i am still unsure of.
So.. i get my phone and it has alot of spam apps on it. in order for me to remove these i need to 'root' my device. i think i understand what that is, not 100% what i can do with it.
i wanted to ask.. if i were to update to gingerbread 2.3, would i have to root first, remove spam apps, then update or would that just put the apps back?
also a question about these ROMs ive seen people chatting about. Are these just similar to windows based themes? wall papers, annimations, sounds etc?
To sum up, i am looking to get rid of crappy apps and just browse around my (latest, aka gingerbread 2.3) stock software for a few weeks before installing a different theme or whatever they are.
Sorry if this seems simple, i have just switched from Apple Os which is so much more user friendly imo.
Thanks for any replies
I highly recommend getting a tpu case and screen protector before proceeding.

Those are custom ROM, which developers uses stock ROM as base. They modified, customized and tweaked it, so it is much faster and more battery saving than stock ROM.
To flash a custom ROM, you can find guide in the development section.

Welcome to Android World! Here you will find all your answers related to your Android OS.
Since you have not rooted your device. It's hard to get rid of some the built in apps.
in simple words if you are not aware of this stuff > Rooting your phone means becoming an Administrator of your device, where you can do what you like, like full control on (PC.

You two sir, are meanie.
But then, consider using the 2+ clear protector for the front and rear for maximum protection.
Meanie? I thought I it was good advice. If he wants to disregard our advice he is more than welcome to bust up his phone again. Kinda hard to flash stuff if your phone is broken.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
When I bought my DHD I was so into it I decided to make a personal website.
It has various rom screenshot examples, some videos and an up-to-date list of roms here at XDA. You can check it out via my sig.
I put it together with people like you in mind.
Maybe it can help or at least inspire you.
I try most roms and my current one is MIUI 1.8.26 V.2: FRESHLY SQUEEZED EDITION™ By MrGarak.
Screenshots of it are here.
Enjoy your DHD!
I still thoroughly enjoy mine.

So sad. Or maybe bad luck. Anyway, good luck unlocking your phone!
Hi there welcome to Android.
all that rooting isn't really obligatory, more of a fun thing to do actually. Most of the time ROM's from xda developers are better optimized and faster than the ones coming from HTC, but HTC aren't horrible developers.
For hiding crappy apps you could install an alternative launcher (i use GO Launcher EX) which allows you to hide certain apps. This way you'll never see them but the niceties of the Sense UI will be gone also (some of them). However Go Launcher is quite customizable.
and btw, this is the big thing with android, customization. You can change almost anything about it only sometimes needing root to do it.
It's a great OS and if iOS is friendly to noobs, Android is not as friendly (a bit of a learning curve but not steep) but it does let them show of a lot more.

hello all!

Well last night I cracked the screen on my Droid X, So this morning I woke up and realized that I had to buy a new phone.
I went searching the xda Forums for a phone that still had active Development going for it, but a phone that wasn't too expensive. SOOOOOOOOo I decided on the Droid Incredible! (found one in new condition for $95) I'm very impressed with the STILL active development on the DInc, Considering the Droid X is Newer, and development tapered off well before last Christmas... There hasn't been a good rom released for the X in MONTHS!
I'm not new by any means to the rooted/Rom'd community, and I'm more than Positive that I can share a lot of good input.
So if any dev's need help/testers, etc, LET ME KNOW!
So tell me guys - What rom/kernal tweaks/themes/radio mods should I start with?
Theres TOO many for me to decide on my own!
Thanks!
CM7 with incredikernel.
Or if you want it to be a little fancy with less tweaking and work involved, go MIUI and incrediknerel.
ICS is available, but doesn't run as well as the GB ROM's do.
Yeah I'm not too crazy about ICS myself, Is everything working on CM7 for the DInc?
How about performance? FC's or laggy scrolling?
Because on the X we never had Camera, Gps, Etc., and The only way to get past laggy scrolling was to OC/OV, which still Killed your battery in half a day lol
and then on CM9 We had some crazy bugs like being stuck in landscape mode which I CANNOT STAND
Thanks for the Starting point though!

everything will work. you can even undervolt, i usually make it ~16 hours on the stock battery
Welcome! I think you'll find that the X and Dinc are two entirely different experiences haha many of those issues you mentioned on the X are non-existent for most roms here.

Yeah, as I'm reading thru the forum posts, I'm starting to realize this lol.
To start with, the X had a Locked Kernal, which is probably the reason why the development tapered off so fast

With little/moderate/heavy use?
For my X to last that long, I would literally have to turn off GPS, Wifi, Data, Background data, Auto sync, etc lol
Basically what I'm saying is that I'm very impressed with everything I'm reading about the Incredible
If you are thinking about CM7 and want a more stable, smoother, more optimized ROM for Dinc, and also don't want the hassles of chasing nightlies, try "inc-deck-gingerbread."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119857
It's a CM7 clone... that is better than the official one from CM. The only real difference, as far as features, is that inc-deck comes with a vanilla launcher, instead of ADW launcher like CM has. Just install the launcher of your choice, if you don't want vanilla. I like Go launcher EX.
Incredikernel is what I use also.
mods (ones that I remember at least)
ext4 for all... normal data version
v6 supercharger... balanced

the inc is about a 1000x's better for hacking then all verizon motorola phones combined. lol. and give the latest cm7 nightly a try with the newest incredikernel. i can link you to ext4 mods, v6 supercharger and adrenalyne shot too.
Thanks for all the input guys, I've been learning a lot from these posts!
I used v6 Supercharger for a while with my X, but stopped using it because I never stayed on 1 rom for more than a couple days at a time and got so sick of setting it up every day lol.
I could just never find a rom that I could settle with because they all had their problems...
So other than OC/UV, what else are the benefits from IncrediKernal?
Also, My phone hasn't arrived yet, So I don't know which version of android or HBoot is on it yet, But is there anything In specific that I need to look for or that I need to know before I start to root?
And, with the X, We had what we called an "SBF", which basically was an un-brick for our phones. If our phones ever bricked or bootlooped after flashing anything, we just plugged our phones into the computer, booted into recovery mode, and "SBF'ed" back to stock. And basically, our phones went right back to stock, unrooted, bloated Froyo or Gingerbread, and we had a 2.3.340 file for Froyo that we could flash, and a 2.3.602 Gingerbread File.
So is there anything like that the Dinc?
Thanks again guys!
This is the kind of community that I was wishing the DX community was, and now I'm glad I'm gonna be apart of the Dinc Forums!

well, its REALLY REALLY and i stress REALLLLLLLY hard to brick an incredible. the only way i know of is pulling battery while flashing radios or double flashing them. most stuff is recoverable via a RUU. ive never had to use one personally, because i dont ever mess with radios. but here is the website where all the hboots, sbf's and stuff are found.

I must say we have been a tight knit community since release date. Also:
Droid X: SBF = Droid Incredible: RUU

lmao I can already tell you guys are gonna be a great group to work with, expect to hear A LOT from me
Thanks for the insight on the whole SBF/RUU deal
I'm familiar with ADB from my first two android phones, but NEVER used ADB once with my DX, so I'm a little rusty. Should I be worried about setting up my SDK and what not before I get my phone just to get it out of the way? or no?
Also, I was reading about Downgrading to S-off, and obviously I don't know what version of Android is on my Incredible until I get it, but is downgrading completely necessary for Root/Rom?
I'm guessing you guys also flash .zip's thru clockwork or rom manager?
I briefly had a samsung Fascinate that used Voodoo recovery instead of clockwork, Is why I ask.

Agreed, CM7 with incredikernel. Stable & rock solid, so many customizations available. Tried out just about every ROM after getting bored of CM7, and always end up coming back before days end. Nothing better for this phone in my opinion.

You dont really need the whole sdk, just adb, fastboot, and their drivers. You can pick that up here http://dinc.does-it.net/ADB/ADB-Fastboot-USB-Drivers_v4_(x86)(x64).zip. And here http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install is how to install the drivers if you dony already know.
You can get root and flash roms without being s-off, however you cant flash radios, hboots, or splash screens. I would highly recomend to do it anyways, as it makes your phone much easier to troubleshoot and fix if it were to break somehow in the future. It also makes it much easier to reroot should you need to do an ruu or somehow loose root.
Yes roms and mods are flashed thru cwm (prefered) or amon ra recovery, and ruus, hboots, radios, splash screens, and recoveries thru hboot.

I hear ya! I'm contemplating delaying my upgrade until late summer to see how things develop. All these upcoming phones have excellent specs minus battery capacity so I need to see what changes my mind. Not to mention, I've been checking out various other forums (GNex and Rezound) and many users just seem more argumentative and blatantly rude. I guess that comes with the increased user base.

not a fan of the gnex community myself. The dinc people I know there rarely post.
Anyway. Love cm7 and I flashed cm 6.1 on my Inc using boot manager just for nostalgia tonight. Cm6.1 was my first custom ROM ever.

Sweet thanks for all the input guys! All these links and info definitely help and are making my life a whole lot easier lol
The only reason I didnt buy a newer phone is because I'm so sick of the big ass screens and what not on them, that was one of the main things I hated about my DX. But, I'm enjoying the community here and I don't even have the phone yet lol, it should be here tomorrow I can't wait!
So tell me, is there any bugs on CM7 that you've found? Or is it perfect? What's your favorite tweaks? Do you guys have unthrottle mods? And Voltages/ frequencys are your over clocks at? Do you prefer setcpu/quick clock/rom toolbox, etc?
Thanks again guys

The only thing that doesn't work in cm7 that I'd wish worked is 720p video. I can live without. To set voltage, most use an app called incredicontrol. Overclocking is built into cm7. Iamtheonetheycallneo has a flashable voltage script, that lowers the voltages for the high and low voltage part of the frequency.
