Having a issue with the voice actions, I can do the generall "call", "navigate to" "direction to" and "map of" but if i try a text message, or "listen on [music/artist]" it doesn't seem to work
Often it will pick up the words correctly but it seems as if my phone doesnt wanna notice that its a action when i say "listen to"
is there somewhere you need to turn on certain commands? or need to have certain music etc?
Are you using the proper syntax?
To send a text message to you I would say "Send text to elmo hi elmo (comma) how are you (question mark).
Works every time for me.
You shouldn't have to turn anything on, but you could check the settings for the service in the Settings, Voice Input & Output section.
yep ive tried it and it perfectly reckonises what ive said and yet still doesnt turn "listen to" into a command and just reads it as a google search!
if you go to voice command and then hit the "Help" button. it will take you toa place where you can choose to "watch a video" it also lists types of commands
i only have
"navigate to"
"directions to"
"map of"
"Call"
do you guys have more then this???

Go to the market and download the Voice Search app again. Yours sounds corrupted. Here's an appbrain link to it: http://www.appbrain.com/app/voice-search/com.google.android.voicesearch
Maybe check your voice language settings, I'm pretty sure all commands are available only if the voice search is set to English (US)

That's correct. When i change mine to English UK, I only get the same options the OP lists (plus web search).
P.S. - that's why I asked if he was in US. You put it much more succinctly!

Ok guys i got the voice search working. So when you click search button the mic comes up and you search.
This is how.
Go to settings, applications and click allow third party applications to install.
Link the phone via htc sync to your pc.
Go to this link and download the file and open the rar, click , install onto phone.
nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-voice-search-to-htc-phones
(insert http before)
Happy searching
p.s. this is not my own work, just passing on the information
This is the original thread that found the above app:
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/60120-do-you-have-quick-search-mic.html
The original location of the app:
http://code.google.com/p/voicesearch/
So you can monitor if there is an update.
I have tested this on my HTC Desire and it works fine, no error, no quirks, no FC, just works.
Why on Earth was this removed? Works (so far) flawlessly on my unbranded / unlocked Desire. Cheers.
Fantastic app, of course I searched for various 'rude' words (not the obvious ones that are no doubt blocked) and the first links in each case went to Urban Dictionary
Tried some sensible searches and EVERY single one worked as expected - very impressed, well done Google!
Now why on earth is this not a standard app.....
Am I missing something lol? its been on mine from the start lol

Brilliant, thank you.
Does this change the htc keyboard?
I wasn't aware it was missing? It appears to have been there from the start for me, using the Orange ROM, haven't bothered debranding it yet.
No.
This will not add that mic button in the keyboard.

Mine was there on the Orange branded ROM, but since disappeared after flashing to generic. They must've done this themselves as part of their 'branding' process - something actually worth doing for once! Well done Orange!
oddness: *only* google search
I got a Desire on T-mob today, and I've been playing to add this.
I've got the voice search enabled, and I've added the new keyboard with a mic button on it - all well so far. However, if I do a search, and press the mic I get the "Speak Now" dialogue, and it says "Google Search". So I can do a Google search fine, but I can't for example ring someone in my phone book. I can google them, but that's not quite the same!
Can anyone help?

my phone's recognising my contacts names when I speak, it's just defaulting to google search for them rather than local search..
phil, could you post what you did to enable voice search, just in case I've done something differently? "call joe bloggs" doesn't do it for me, it just does a google search for the term...!
Sorry i took a while to reply, This is what i did to install the voice search.
1) Go to settings > applications > click allow third party applications to install.
2) Go to >
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-voice-search-to-htc-phones/
3) Download for the htc desire.
4) Plug your desire into a usb port on your pc.
5) Click htc sync ( Make sure it up and running on your pc too)
6) Open the file you downloaded in step 3.
7) Follow the instructions. Click next once (i think) then it will promt on your phone, press install.
8) Click the search button on your desire (bottom left hard button, little magnifieing glass)
9) A little microphone should appear, click that to voice search.
All done,
Few hints >
Long press the button to go straight to voice search.
To call someone, you have to say > call "persons name"
Saying something normally will google search that.
PM me if you need more help.

Are you British/American/Australian? If not, and you're expecting it to recognize [region-specific] names as you would normally pronounce them in whatever your native language is, you're in for a treat.

Installed it on my Desire this evening and tried it.
Load of rubbish!
If you ask it to 'call' [a person], most of the time it does not find the person. When it does, the app closes as soon as you confirm the action.
If you ask it to 'dial' [a number] it is better at the recognition but only works with 10 digit [xxx xxx xxxx] US numbers so useless in the UK.
Already uninstalled!
have you tried vlingo, that works like a charm.
also i have had lots of success with the voice dialer on my desire, also based in the uk, you might want to check the display layout of your contacts name
for example if you want to call longjohn silver you would just say that but if his display name is set as last name first then you would need to say "silver, longjohn" for it to work

I don't get what the issue here is. Is everyone running a custom rom that doesn't support it or something? I just hold down the search button for a second and it pops up with a voice search feature... I just say "Call Name" and it dials it in a few seconds... I am using a stock 2.1 Desire...

Ditto here
not great
Installed the voice dialer, but not too impressed. It doesn't recognise UK area codes, so the 'Dial' function is useless.
The voice recognition for the contact list isn't the greatest either...unless I need to refine my Geordie (North East England, for those outside the UK) accent...lol.
Nice try, but uninstalled!
yeah, this worked great on my g1, it was almost magical but its never worked that well for me on the desire, i have no idea why, so i installed vlingo instead which is pretty awesome
I have a SGS running Doc JS8 and a Bell Canada Customer. I been having nothing but trouble with Voice search and Voice Dialer. I say "Text <contact name> How are you" it put "To <contact name> How are you" in the body and then i have to click the To field and press the button again to get the contact.
I say Call < Contact Name> it starts a google search. Google search is about the only thing it can do actuarially and sometimes the nav commands works but usually a hit or miss. Its not me because google search/body of text are spot on.
There is another Voice app called Voice Dialer which actually works way better and gets the correct contact without issue and can even open apps, but the annoying thing is it displays a popup you have to click and not the 15 second timer you see is Google Search.
Is there anyway to get Google Voice Actions to work better??
Is there anyway to use your voice to play Music??
I find the same. Its pretty hit and miss and highly frustrating. I can randomly send the odd text but that is it. Have never got it to do anything else which is a shame because voice commands were one of the main selling points of the sgs.

Both Vlingo and Google stuff work OK for me but I don't use them nearly as much as I though I would...turns out I look and feel like an idiot barking orders at my phone. I guess it might be more useful in the car but I don't drive much.

well thats the only use i see to get the hands free experience, i'd look like an idiot on the Go train barking at the phone. But still would love it if it worked in the car like the iphone does.
If I say "Send text to [X] where are we meeting" the Galaxy S2 actually tries to search that phrase instead of actioning it.
Any way to correct this ?
Voice recognition info (love it!)
Hi, Yes if you have the stock phone, double tap the home button to access the Touchwiz Vlingo. I have found this to be not only more accurate than the Google input, but I don't need to get as close to the mic.
I have found it uncannily accurate, and this is the first phone where voice recognition has been more than a gimmick for me.
such as
"Text John Smith how are you doing John question mark"
will give you an SMS window in Vlingo
How are you doing John?
You then have the option to resend etc.
Other useful ones like 'Show me a map of nearest petrol stations"
or
'Navigate to EC1V 2AA'
or
Navigate to the nearest petrol station.
Theres loads of useful stuff on there, I love it's integration in search, nav, maps messaging (text and email) etc..
Driving mode allows you to keep it in permanent listening mode (also an option under voice settings in Settings). Do as SMS come in it will read to you, an you can say 'Reply Thanks for the update' etc.
Lastly, but no means least, you can set your highly amusing greeting under Settings->Voice input and output->Voice recog settings->Voice talk settings to whatever you want. Some words work better than others, like Yo! What do you want dude? You'll also find options under this lot for chosing Vlingo or Google.
Have fun.
Peter
Interesting .. I played with it yesterday too .. unfortunately my English is not good. Vlingo mostly does what I want .. but Google NEVER ! It seems like it does not even interpret commands .. if I say something like 'listen to xxx' .. it sometimes does understand what I said .. but instead of playing the song, it sends it to internet search. What do I do wrong ? Is there some option to setup google voice search ? Is it possible to use it instead of Vlingo ?

Hi, yes you will. The screen you are referring to is always powered by vlingo, as it is part of Touchwiz as far as I know (and as stock assigned to the double tap).
This setting controls the default voice engine (not software front end), so theoretically when for example you are dictating a text you will now be using Vlingo. But this will not change you using the Voice Talk when double click.
As for your problem, you should be saying 'play music by', rather than 'listen to' Curiously this does result in search for me too, but only when I have selected the Voice Commands from Apps and not when double clicking into it??!!
cheers
Peter
Ahh, cracked it!!
The Voice Control app accessed by double clicking home button accesses the same app, but will only let you use the set commands shown and a couple of other like maps. And for me always works well with 'Play Music' - not 'Listen to.'
Key difference between this and the Voice Commands app accessed from Applications is that that if it doesn't understand you it says it could not recognise command or similar.
whereas the one from Apps will run a search if it understood the words but not the command. Basically, two different implementations of 'don't understand command'.
Hope this helps!
Google Now: NO Voice reply or Picture showing up work around.
This is for anyone who cannot get a voice to reply for anything in Google Now (that includes weather), and also for people who cant get a picture for Google Now cards. The reason for why voice does not work is because the languages are mixed in settings. I used to have Google Now as English Canada, but voice as English US. Unfortunately, I cannot use English Canada, so I had to set them all to English US.
This is how I did it:
1. Go into System settings > Language and Input
2. Make sure Language is set to English (US)
3. Make sure Google voice typing is checked and set to Automatic
4. Click on Voice Search underneath SPEECH. Make sure Language is set to English (US) and Speech Output is set to always speak
5. Go into Text-to-speech output. Click on the Google Text-to.. settings icon. Language should be set to English US.
6. Test voice by going into Google Now and asking it the weather. It should reply! Note: For weather, the voice always replies, which is why you should test weather.
7. Click Thanks if this helped
Picture not showing up for cards: This is pretty easy.
1. Go into Google Now
2. Click on Settings>Privacy and Accounts> and check off "Search on google.com"
3. Test it by asking a question that has a picture. For example: "How tall is Kobe Bryant?" The picture should now show up.
4. Click Thanks if this helped
Any questions, just Private Message me. ^.^ or post in the thread.
PS. This workaround worked for me, on CM10 v8 Alpha Preview by FE with the Gapps from OP and Devil 1.0.4 Test3 JB kernel. Also, for pictures, one other user reported that he did not get the "search on google.com" option. Please test it out and tell me if it works, THANK YOU! Also, click thanks if I helped ;D
Feedback please? Does it work? Yes, no? Click "Thanks" if it helped?
tested it, still no pic shown
Thats strange. It works 100% for me on any ROM. If I go into Google Now > Settings > Privacy and accounts > Check "Search on google.com" (bottom blurb says "Using www.google.com instead of your local domain (www.google.ca), the picture shows up perfectly. If I uncheck that, no picture shows up. Im sorry if im unable to help, but thats how I managed to get it working. I really dont know why its not working for you, sorry. :/
Mine doesn't have the option to search Google etc in privacy, however I am able to get pics.
Followed steps and speak back feature works great!

Hmm, I know this sounds stupid, but is your volume at max? It didnt work for me once because my volume was down lol. Major fail on my part.
Also, could you tell me your settings on Voice in Google Now settings?
It should be Language: Default - English(US), Speech Output: Always Speak. (The other two are block offensive words and Hotword detection which are both checked, but they shouldnt make a difference either way)
Other settings to be aware of are:
-Make sure profiles is off (some profiles might have silent activated)
-Settings>Language and Input>Language, English (US)
Unfortunately, Im not on the same rom as you are right now, (Im on RemICS - JB) so we have some different settings in the Language and Input part, but I'll make a backup and flash PA 360 and try to make google now voice stop working to see what settings are stopping yours. I apologize for this thread of not being much help to you. If you manage to get it working before I can find which settings are messing it up, then kudos to you, and please share your new findings so I can update the thread.
