Ok guys i got the voice search working. So when you click search button the mic comes up and you search.
This is how.
Go to settings, applications and click allow third party applications to install.
Link the phone via htc sync to your pc.
Go to this link and download the file and open the rar, click , install onto phone.
nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-voice-search-to-htc-phones
(insert http before)
Happy searching
p.s. this is not my own work, just passing on the information
This is the original thread that found the above app:
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/60120-do-you-have-quick-search-mic.html
The original location of the app:
http://code.google.com/p/voicesearch/
So you can monitor if there is an update.
I have tested this on my HTC Desire and it works fine, no error, no quirks, no FC, just works.
Why on Earth was this removed? Works (so far) flawlessly on my unbranded / unlocked Desire. Cheers.
Fantastic app, of course I searched for various 'rude' words (not the obvious ones that are no doubt blocked) and the first links in each case went to Urban Dictionary
Tried some sensible searches and EVERY single one worked as expected - very impressed, well done Google!
Now why on earth is this not a standard app.....
Am I missing something lol? its been on mine from the start lol
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Brilliant, thank you.
Does this change the htc keyboard?
I wasn't aware it was missing? It appears to have been there from the start for me, using the Orange ROM, haven't bothered debranding it yet.
No.
This will not add that mic button in the keyboard.

Mine was there on the Orange branded ROM, but since disappeared after flashing to generic. They must've done this themselves as part of their 'branding' process - something actually worth doing for once! Well done Orange!
oddness: *only* google search
I got a Desire on T-mob today, and I've been playing to add this.
I've got the voice search enabled, and I've added the new keyboard with a mic button on it - all well so far. However, if I do a search, and press the mic I get the "Speak Now" dialogue, and it says "Google Search". So I can do a Google search fine, but I can't for example ring someone in my phone book. I can google them, but that's not quite the same!
Can anyone help?

Try vlingo or Choice Dialler.

my phone's recognising my contacts names when I speak, it's just defaulting to google search for them rather than local search..
phil, could you post what you did to enable voice search, just in case I've done something differently? "call joe bloggs" doesn't do it for me, it just does a google search for the term...!
Sorry i took a while to reply, This is what i did to install the voice search.
1) Go to settings > applications > click allow third party applications to install.
2) Go to >
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-voice-search-to-htc-phones/
3) Download for the htc desire.
4) Plug your desire into a usb port on your pc.
5) Click htc sync ( Make sure it up and running on your pc too)
6) Open the file you downloaded in step 3.
7) Follow the instructions. Click next once (i think) then it will promt on your phone, press install.
8) Click the search button on your desire (bottom left hard button, little magnifieing glass)
9) A little microphone should appear, click that to voice search.
All done,
Few hints >
Long press the button to go straight to voice search.
To call someone, you have to say > call "persons name"
Saying something normally will google search that.
PM me if you need more help.
As i said, i wasn't the one who made this file or anything, just happened to be
one of the first to get the device and get this working.

Hi Guys,
Been a long time since I posted on this forum, back in the days of my T-Mobile MDA Vario! Thankfully moved on to a better operating system in the shape of Google's Android. Any way my question relates to the new Donut (1.6) update. I've had a read off the features for this update from the Google Android website but i'm having trouble using some of them.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-1.6-highlights.html
Text-to-speech
I've activated the settings for this in the Settings menu and downloaded the necessary voice pack from the market but so far can't seem to get it to work. Ideally i want it to be able to read back my text messages as this is very handy for when driving, but i can't find any options to turn this on. Anyone got any ideas?
Voice Dialling
Another feature useful while driving (hands free of course) and the normal way on most phones is of course to press and hold a certain button. I think I must have tried every button for this one but still can't find it.
Any help you guys can give would be great thanks.

Voice Dialing (and Voice Search) is not installed outside of US (and maybe AU).
If it was, you would have a microphone icon beside the google search button.
And for Voice dialing, you could just long press the green dial button (physical button)
oh right didn't realise that was a US only feature, guess I can wait till éclair for them to roll it out here. Any update on text-to-speech?

Try the application TalkBack . (it might be already installed on your phone, or install from market).
You can activate it in Settings-Accessibility. Then android menus/popups/... will be talked to you !
(you should also install Text-To-Speech Extended from market )
Hi
Has anyone tried this app on the Desire.
Voice Dialer HF
It works on the Nexus One (although you still need to touch the screen as there is no camera button).
My Nexus One has no camera button. How do I start VDHF?
Today, VDHF on the Nexus One may only be started via the icon, since the Nexus One has neither a camera nor a send button. As soon as Google releases an OTA update that activates the Bluetooth "voice activation" feature, we will add support.
It's the closest thing to proper bluetooth voice dialing available at the moment, and since my phone is due to arrive early next week I would be interested if anyone has used this app or will now try it if they didn't know it existed.
Looking foward to receiving feedback.

Is the inibility to download beacuse of the restrictions that are seemingly on the Desire at the moment or is there another reason?

For this issue, you can try button shortcut in the market! you will love that I think ;-)
Anyone on this app.
Is it a copy protected app or is it just not downloadable because it's not compatable. I haven't received my phone yet, and to be honest I am beginning to think I was too hasty in ordering it.
EDIT: INFO from Voice Dialer HF
# I can't buy any paid app from Android Market. I use a Google Hosted Domain.
* We have had reports that users signing up for Google Checkout with a Google Hosted Domain email address (Gmail using your own domain name) may not be able to download paid apps from Android Market. A workaround is to sign up using an email address with a standard Gmail [email protected] account. Discussions here and here.
UPDATE
Okay
I've spoken with the developer and the UK sales of his prodcut is suspended because initial voice recognition results with the product were not good. However when I get my phone he isprepared to let me try. I get the impression that it is tweakable. For me, a product like this is the difference between keeping the phone when it arrives, or returning it.
You should try Choice Dialer. I got it from the market on my Desire. There's a free version which will voice dial. There is also a paid version which lets you play an album or playlist by voice. Works well but still no bluetooth control as no voice activation seems to work by bluetooth. Other problem I had was that I could not choose a single song track by voice as I seem to have too many. Tony, the developer, has not yet yet been able to resolve this for me. Voice dialling isn't perfect but pretty good for me. You must speak clearly though.
Try it.
Choice dialer works fine as long as you set it up to work only as a phone voice dialer.
If you enable also the voice apps it often gets confused.
I have used it only one day but it seems like it can deliver also via BT headset.
fingers are still crossed but so far so good...
Well my experience after 1 hour is quite different.
I have 600 contacts, most with just a mobile number, but some with mob/Home and some with mob/home/work. I would say sucess rate is about 5% at the moment.
I'm also getting
Sorry!
'The application choice dialer free (process com.resounding.choicedialer.free) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.' more often than I get a correct call made. Okay Android OS is new for me, so it's unfair to judge, but this is awful compared to MS Voice Command.

I tried it.
It wouldn't undertand me at all!
Also after dialling it went off and I had to press the phone button to select it again for it to start listening again.
If I have to do that I might as weel just use speed dial..
Maybe I am using it wrong??
Try vlingo.

Choice Dialler Works fine for me even with a slight Welsh accent. Speak slow and it also picks up on contacts mobile, home or work number.

Are you British/American/Australian? If not, and you're expecting it to recognize [region-specific] names as you would normally pronounce them in whatever your native language is, you're in for a treat.

Installed it on my Desire this evening and tried it.
Load of rubbish!
If you ask it to 'call' [a person], most of the time it does not find the person. When it does, the app closes as soon as you confirm the action.
If you ask it to 'dial' [a number] it is better at the recognition but only works with 10 digit [xxx xxx xxxx] US numbers so useless in the UK.
Already uninstalled!
have you tried vlingo, that works like a charm.
also i have had lots of success with the voice dialer on my desire, also based in the uk, you might want to check the display layout of your contacts name
for example if you want to call longjohn silver you would just say that but if his display name is set as last name first then you would need to say "silver, longjohn" for it to work

Works for me. Phone, press search key (physical), say "call" and if the name is the only one in the directory and there aren't options, eg home or mobile, it dials.

I don't get what the issue here is. Is everyone running a custom rom that doesn't support it or something? I just hold down the search button for a second and it pops up with a voice search feature... I just say "Call Name" and it dials it in a few seconds... I am using a stock 2.1 Desire...

Ditto here
not great
Installed the voice dialer, but not too impressed. It doesn't recognise UK area codes, so the 'Dial' function is useless.
The voice recognition for the contact list isn't the greatest either...unless I need to refine my Geordie (North East England, for those outside the UK) accent...lol.
Nice try, but uninstalled!
yeah, this worked great on my g1, it was almost magical but its never worked that well for me on the desire, i have no idea why, so i installed vlingo instead which is pretty awesome
Weird problem here. Since the update OTA, whenever I press the address part of a contact in People it opens the address in the HTC Locations app. Before it used to open it in Google Maps. Ideas?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I have this also. Can't find out how to switch the thing back either. Kind of annoying really because I just don't seem to click with the locations app.
ability to pick between Locations and Google Maps would be great. I am having the opposite problems with addresses in my Calendar opening in Google Maps instead of the HTC Navigation.
My suspicion is that HTC are attempting to put their app (which has potential to make them money via licenses) front and centre.
Sure, you can still use Google Maps but don't expect it to be integrated with Sense!

Yep. Address opens Locations. Don't know if it used to open GMaps, though, because I never use that feature (usualy I know how to get to the people in my address book ).
try going to the locations app and checking if there are any default settings set.
You can't change it.

Just checked and mine does the same. It used to open in Google maps. As you say, HTC are probably just pushing their own SW.
It would be be nice to be able to choose which mapping SW opened BUT it'd be even nicer if you could just *view* the full postal address in a window if it's too long for the one line in the People app! (There's another thread on this somewhere). When it opened Google maps you could touch the 'flag' and it would then open a text window with the address but I haven't found a way to do this with Locations yet .......
Why is such a simple thing not included, even as an option????? As someone here said, we usually know how to get to people in our *contacts*. Mapping is to find unknown addresses!!!!!
I feel a *request* to HTC coming on.....

Sygic Aura doesn't work on 1.72 either. Just keeps erroring out. Same software works fine on 1.32 and on Cyanogenmod. Not sure if its a coincidence but its a very strange one.

Locations
Check "Integrate google navigation with locations"
Then everything will be back to normal.

which Aura do u mean? I have tried 2.1 and it works perfectly... to be honest - not so perfectly while it crashed 2 times while browsing the maps and switching views (not normal driving usage); however it starts and goes well. Maybe u have to update the soft - there was an actualization a few weeks ago.

Dear Dean *******,
Thank you for your email today.
I would advise on deleting the OTA update you received, to restore the firmware version back to the previous version. This then should allow you to access contacts from the previous settings.

Hello to all, I am new to this forum, so, please be kind to me!
Here is my question: I paired my new Atrix with the radio in my car to use the hands free option as I did with my previous BB. Since I installed Skype every time I call a contact, the screen of the radio freezes after pressing the green phone Icon. Recently I discovered that the phone asks (only in the phone´s screen) if I want to use "Dialer" or Skype. Once confirmed on the touchscreen, the call originated at the radio proceeds normally. I searched all alternatives but cannot find the menu to make all calls by default using "dialer". As this is quite annoying I was thinking of deleting Skype cause I actually don´t use it that much. Can anyone give me a clue?

Thanks a lot for your help.... but it did not work (no defaults were set!) I used the "force stop" option... but this did not work either. It seems there is sort of a resident command line that asks "dialer or Skype" which runs even if Skype is off :-(
