So I have been thinking. What would I be willing to pay for a phone off contract? Well. Bought my Vibrant for off contract, and it took a nice piece out of my wallet.
So my question is for you guys, Would you be willing to pay for a phone off contract for the right price? What would that price be?
Please leave comments on what you think.
I realize this is a very general question but I'm turning to my fellow Vibrant owners first.
Question to you or anybody that bought it off contract...Do you guys have a data plan?
No data plan. The only reason I bought it off contract

I bought 2 Vibrants off contract when T-Mo had some crazy Bing cash back - like 25% or something. I do have a data plan with both.
Now, we use Even More Plus, so between the two of us we're saving something like $40/month over the rates on an equivalent Even More plan. That quickly adds up to make buying off-contract a better option if you can get phones for even slightly below MSRP, and it's an absolute no brainer for a phone enthusiast who likes to switch often and trade on Ebay or Craigslist.
I'm very disappointed that EM+ seems to be going away. It's one of the reasons I switched to T-Mobile and IMO is about the best value in mobile.
Even more plus, bought off contract with payment plan (reimbursed through work though).
All of my phones eventually become my wife's phones when I choose to upgrade.
contract is a gimmick and you eventually pay full price for phone. What do you think that extra $20 or so month goes to
my no contract Even More 500TTW is $60 on contract its $80 no thanks
To quickly crunch some numbers...
On contact the phone cost roughly $200 and an additional $20 a month over the EM+ plan. Over the 24 month contract that equals a $680 phone.
From my perspective anything under that price is worth it. Not to mention out of contract allows for mobile flexibility should you need it.

Last fathers day I wanted to cash in on the 2 free phone deal, and being an existing tmobile member for the last 5 years I was not eligible, so I called them anyways and said I have been with tmobile for the last 5 years and want to cash in on this fathers day deal, long story short........got transfered to the loyalty department and they gave me 2 free phones of my choice with the signing off a 2 year contract when my current contract is up at my same no contract rate........here is the greatest part, I can choose any phone whenever I want. so haveing the G1 for so long I said screw it I'll take a Vibrant, now I still have 1 more free phone left to get, my girl likes my vibrant, so I was thinking of handing this one to her and grabbing the Nexus S, but we will see.
Anyways the moral of the story, call and talk to someone, be calm, and ask lots of questions, they are nice at tmobile and they will bend over backwards to keep you as a customer.
Edit: I should also say that I got my G1 for $20 + $50 mail in rebate, so I ended up getting paid $30 and signed a 1 year contract at my current grandfathered rate.......just call and talk to t-mobile

Well US phones typically have their bands locked down (or are missing bands). Mobile flexibility probably would amtter to someone who has i.e. a Nokia N8 with a pentaband radio - but a Vibrant doesn't have that.
Going on Contract is cheaper. If you ever want to switch carriers you can just ETF the contract. It goes down every month you're on the contract.
That way you don't have to come up with so much up front for the phone.
Also, you get rebates on contract phones that sometimes aren't available if you buy the phone off-contract (i.e. Web Deals, etc.).
If you do the calculations, off contract is cheaper in the long term.
Not by much considerimg it's over a 2 yeat period. Mosy people don't care.
Thr upfront cost for an unlocked phone is simply too high for most.

For me, going off-contract was good. It saved me $20 (plus tax) a month on phone charges, and, since I am planning on keeping this phone for a while, it's more than paid for. For me, having a contract and "subsidized" phones means being locked in to the carrier, and ending up paying full price (or more) for the phone on the installment plan.
On contract here. I don't think I could shell out $400+ for a phone just to be an early adopter.
I pay $120 a month for the 700 min family plan which includes my Vibrant with data, 400 texts, insurance, 2 extra lines with 400 texts each and [email protected] home. I also get a %15 discount through my work. There is no other carrier that would come close too that price. I will always buy on contract and keep my grandfathered plan.
Haha i got it free from t-mobile somehow i forgot it has something to do with trading in crappy phones.
Two year contract got me a vibrant for free not on an upgrade ;p
The day this phone came out!!

Sprint would be cheaper. They have just as good discounts as tmo, better for us, but unfortunately no service..
Oh, and unlimited texts, too.
Important on a droid... No push notifications for most (this) phone for fb/twitter.

The vibrant actually does have 3g bands for at&t, even though what you say about missing bands is usually true.
Regarding price, if you have a data plan, em+ saves at least $20/month versus contract pricing, so for contract to be cheaper you'd need to either save $480 on a phone, (or less, if you convince tmo to give you phones more frequently).
Now I only paid $300 for our vibrants after rebates, so it was clearly cheaper in our case.

I was just checking up on Engadget and saw this article. Hope this was the small push you needed to get a G2
The cheapest before was $50 with contract but now it's Free!
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/t-mobile-g2-now-free-on-contract-android-buyers-have-never-had/
Doesnt apply if you have a no contract plan (The extra line that is)
I had been using a myTouch Slide that was given to me way back in April...so my G1 contract obviously ran out a few months ago. The second I saw this promotion, I jumped on it. Couldn't be more stoked.
Just ordered one of these so expect me to start patrolling these forums in the next few day.( I'm not a noob though)

Please be aware that getting yourself into a contract causes you to end up with a service plan far in excess of your actual use, and NO OPTION TO CHANGE IT FOR THE DURATION. The result of this is that you end up spending THOUSANDS extra over the term of the contract than you would by just paying up full price for the phone in the beginning.
DON'T BE STUPID!!!! CONTRACTS ARE THE RAPE AND TORTURE OF PUPPIES!

How is it spending "thousands" more, if you already have a plan with the $20 preferred android plan for your existing phone?
If you change nothing on your plan when you take the free upgrade, in essence, the phone *IS* free, you just agree to keep service for 24 months, and if you hate the phone and or said service after 30 days, CANCEL, pay the $250 ETF and sell the phone and recoup your losses. I don't see how "Thousands" of extra dollars come into effect here when most people already have a plan they like with the $20 preferred data plan. I know my grandfathered plan with all the free features is much cheaper than ANYTHING a EM+ can EVER offer me.

Yes, wifi eats out of your bucket unless you have the free grandfathered [email protected] UMA plan on your line, then all wifi calls are free. If you have a EM/EM+ plan you can't get that feature added. Old plans still have a 50/50 shot of having a loyalty rep add the SOC.
Ok. Rep didn't know what she was talking about.

Woot recently switched from the nexus s back to g2 and I love it. Saved me $50! Now I save another $150? Man this is awesome! Time to spend the savings on accessories ie dock and larger batt.
Jumped on this when I got to work this morning. Upgrade was 50 bucks, but comes with 50 dollar mail in rebate. Signed new 2 year, but didn't change my plan from my original G1 plan + some discounts I have had.
I've been running Gingerbread on my HD2 but this free G2 has me interested. I've been lurking on the G2 forums trying to figure out the current state of G2 developement. Still not decided if I want to pull the trigger or not. I really love the form factor of my HD2.
just bit the bullet and got one. have a n1 with a g1 plan for a year now and didnt have to change my plan but i did anyway casue i want the 4G's. only a extra $5/mo for it. yes, extra 2 years but they are cheaper then the rest of the carriers, and i dont want to pay $500 for a phone again (got my n1 off cl for that price w/xtra battery). rather buy a HD projector. coming from legacy myfav5 300 anytime minute plan with android data/messaging unlimited plan to the Unlimited 4G for $20/mo and 1500 anytime and unlimited text for $60/mo. and no extra premium data charges. go magenta!

Um, you know that the G1 plan included HSPA+ and you are paying $5 extra for nothing, right?
Just to let yall know, if you are renewing your 2 year contract then you still have to pay $50 up front, you get back the $50 with a $50 mail in rebate which in time, makes it free. Oh and this offer is on the web only, not in stores.
I was going to get my G2 this weekend at the store because Friday is my payday but the offer ends on the 20th so I think I'll bite the bullet and order it tonight online and hope to receive it by Friday.

My ETA when i ordered and got my confirmation email with standard ups shipping was Friday, but when i checked on the site later in the day it was pushed to the 25th, i guess they're selling a bunch, eh?
So I went on My Verizon account a few minutes ago to pay my bill and this is what it says next to the picture of my phone:
"Eligible for a Discount!"
"You ARE eligible to upgrade with discounted pricing. If you upgrade on or after 5/18/12 you are eligible to receive an additional loyalty discount."
And I clicked that and went to the page that shows available phones and pricing and it's showing 2-yr contract prices e.g. iPhone4 16GB new 199.99 and Droid Charge new 249.99. I thought it was an error and I clicked the Droid Charge and followed through up to payment and the total for the phone was 249.99 plus tax and activation. Obviously I didn't follow through because if I were to get a new phone it would be the Nexus Prime =D.
Last time I went to checked out phones it said I was not currently eligible for an upgrade and showed off-contract pricing. Is anyone else's account showing this? It has thrown me off a little bit.
Update 10/8:
Went to talk to a rep today and the main line on a contract gets to upgrade after 12 months. The pricing is based on a new 2-year commitment plus $20. Early upgrades can only be done at Verizon retail stores and online. Nexus Prime, here I come.
I saw the early upgrade as well.
I am not receiving the same treatment

I got an email from the with the early upgrade. I guess they want to add an additional 2 years to our contract. If you keep upgrading every chance you get, pretty soon, you've going to be locked into a 4 year contract making it almost impossible to leave.

How can they do that? By signing a new 2-year agreement the old agreement is invalid. That means that your contract expires 2 years after you sign the new agreement but not the 2 years plus the extra time left on the current contract.
The main line can actually upgrade once a year. But I at lower discounted price that 18 mths.

The prices is it showing me are prices I would pay at 18 months e.g. iPhone 4 16GB new 199.99 and Droid Charge new 249.99. These are fully discounted prices not partially discounted. Also, I thought Verizon did away with annual upgrades even for the main line?
Verizon did get rid of annual upgrades, but only earlier this year. If you signed a contract before they took the annual upgrade away then you are still grandfathered in.

Because they are some shiesty bastards lol. I called enough times and complained about my droid eris being laggy and not having enough ram to run the system let alone any added apps. I told them the only way to get it to run right is to flash a new rom, but that would void my warranty. Agent said he would let me chose any new device for free other than the thunderbolt(which was just released at the time)... So I had them send me a new fascinate and got to keep my eris, don't ask me how or why but they did it. About a week later when I went to log on my vzw account to pay bill I seen my contract was extended one year(on top of the 2yr I agreed to on the eris 6mo prior) without even telling me!! I didnt get too upset because they sent me a brand new fassy for free. My point is: Vzw wireless policy depends on the region of the country your call got directed to... I have been told so many different policies on what they can and cant do, you would think your talking to a completely different company. Vzw is the like the damn weather man, the forecast changes everyday!!!
Signing a new contract does not necessarily void a previous one unless it explicitly states so. Ever notice you sign a two year contract but they let you upgrade after 18 months.
2 reasons..1. they want as many people to update prior to the new 4th quarter phones come out. that way people will have used their upgrade discounts and pay a higher price for the latest phone.
2. they want to jack the revenues for the 4th quarter where vast majority of pure profit is made (think black friday).

By signing a new contact chances are you will no longer get the unlimited 4g, but fall in to there new tiered data plan. Be very cautious when upgrading your phone if you have unlimited now.

This is false...if you upgrade from 3g smartphone to 4g smartphone you keep unlimited data long as you had it before the tired plans went into effect. I called about it and went on the website to check. It would let me upgrade to lte and keep the same unlimited data just had to pay retail since im under contract right now.

Yea like I said I went through the entire process up to payment. It offered me the $30 2GB plan and my old Unlimited $29.99 plan. Obviously I would choose the latter. Only if this evasive Nexus Prime gets launched soon...
called vzn last week about the missed calls and not getting text or pic messaging and the tech i talked to said the problem is known and that vzn was allowing early upgrades plus an extra $50 off if you have a fascinate. told her that was nice but i shouldnt have to pay for a new phone since mine was less than a year old. still waiting for the second tech to call me back. not sure what they are going to offer as a replacement phone yet but it had better be good.
If you have the unlimited data plan, make sure they do not rope you in on their new data plans. When my Fascinate got replaced, the reps at the VZW store also changed my data plan as well. I was furious when I found that out, and they refused to fix it.
Called the VZW customer support, I explained the whole ordeal and they fixed my data plan back to unlimited. Just be cautious when you try to upgrade, make sure you'll get that unlimited data plan (disregard this post if you entered Verizon with the new data plans )
I actually did this 2 weeks ago in Daly City, CA. All I did was tell them that ATT is current offering 50% off smart phones which is still in their website. If you click on the deal link, you will see the GN3 is there. However, I believe it's only for phones < $200. But the manager knew about the deal and price matched without any resistance.
I did this again in Austin, TX last week for my dad. This time the manager is being more resistant. He said it's $250 on their website not $150. I then told him you have to complete the check out process for the promotion to show up. Luckily, one of his employees confirmed that. You might even be able to get it for $125 since it's $250 with 2 year contract on the ATT website.
Good luck.

How did you get that deal? All they offer me is 100 credit and phone full price. My girlfriend would be upgrading to new iphone and signing a 2 yr contract. We would be on a family plan and she would add me on with the note 3. How do I reach retentions? I called yesterday and said cancel but idk if that was retentions. They made a note on my account about the credits. I want to call back and at least get both phones for 200. Any advice how I go about this? The rep noted my account for the 2 100 credits after 30 and 45 days

Are you eligible for an upgrade? I got the same offer. $100 credit after 30 days, $25 off any phone and waived activation fees.
I dialed 611 and choosed cancel service. Told the guy I wanted to cancel my line. Of course they always say sorry to hear that and would like to know why. I told him I found a better deal for the phone I wanted from another carrier. At the time Amazon was selling the note 3 for $124.99 with a new activation. What a great price huh but I've no intention of switching to sprint even if the phone was free. Terrible service where I live. I don't know if he bothered to look it up or not but a minute later I got the offer.
So I'm still not sure if I want buy the phone yet. I've been checking this forum to see if it's going to be worth it. As soon as safe strap arrive then I'll probably pull the trigger.
Oh and I've confirmed that you can still get the credit even if you don't order from At&t. I asked him to note that on my account. So basically I can get the note 3 from amazon for $199.99 minus the $100 credit.

i called att on black friday (just like last year when i got my 2 s3 for $.01 each) and requested an upgrade. the rep on the phone told me i was unable to upgrade at the 1 year point and had to wait for another year till my contract expired. i told her i was able to upgrade the year before with no problems and the rep told me their policies had changed and the only way i could upgrade was to switch to the next program (not happening). so i told her if i had to wait till next year that i would cancel my service and go else where. she asked what phones i wanted and i told her i wanted the s4 for the wife and i was on the fence about the lg g2 and the note 3. she put me on hold and came back saying they would allow me to upgrade early and they would give me the s4 for $49 and the note 3 for $99. so after taxes and everything (free overnight shipping, no activation fees) i paid $165 for an s4 and note 3. then my little victory came crashing down after i logged in here to find i was getting a locked bootloader

I got the Deal Of the Decade.
Note 3 $175
$100 bill credit (to be issued with 45 days)
Waived Upgrade Fee
Free Overnight Shipping
And ......... a Free Galaxy Gear smartwatch
That would mean I got the N3 for $75 ............................................................ but,
I just sold the Gear on Craig's List this afternoon for $240 bucks.
So I got the N3 for free, and put $165 in CASH straight into my xmas fund!
Holy crap, maybe the deal of the centry possibly? :victory:
^^^awsome deal, wish I got that.
Sorry for the late reply, but for those of you that couldn't get it, just call again, it took me 3 calls. I just told them that I need to lower my monthly bill and I want the phone for $199. Didn't need to beat around the bush for me, straight to the point. And one of my lines was due for an upgrade.
Just got to be persistent. Good luck
FYI, Amazon has the phone for $199 with upgrade. Maybe mention that if you want. But it shouldn't matter
Just letting you all know, Best Buy currently has the Note 3 for $149 for new lines, as well as the S4 for free (the promotion is for $50 off of the current sale price, so the Note 3 is listed at $199 and the S4 is 49.99). No haggling or price matching required. I set up a new Mobile Share plan on AT&T, ported over from Verizon, and got a Note 3 and S4 on contract for $160 out the door.
Just to be clear this is for new customers only?
Never made sense to me why people are promised the Moon until they are loyal customers...
I'd like my wife's note to actually be opened before the price drops from 300.... but if I can return it and rewrap it and pocket 100 more for Christmas that's okay too.

strategy?
did you call att?
any notes on calling them and how to demand and get that kind of a price?
I currently have verizon galaxy nexus with unlimited data hooked up to my friends line for $50/month. contract ends in 2 weeks.
I have 6 lines with ATT for my family 10gb share and they only use like 4gb a month so if I join them for $30/month then I will be good for 5-6gb/month. I never went over 3gb/month with verizon all this time that I had UNLIMITED data. I really wanted to keep unlimited data with verizon and get the Note3 with them and pay $50/month with them but verizon won't let me keep the unlimited. the way around is I open a line with verizon and make a switch of phones and put dumb for the new opend line and pay $10/month then I will be paying $60/month to stay with Verizon to keep the unlimited data vs. $30/month with ATT with about 5-6gb/month.
I am debating but I know that I should go with ATT and save hundreds of $$ for next 2 years.
So Please help me and guide me to get some good deal like you :fingers-crossed:
Since many people seem to have a grandfathered unlimited data plan with Verizon, I thought you might want to be aware of this. Might force me to activate my Project Fi account now.

I dropped mine a long time ago and went to Sprint. Sadly, I was only using about 1GB a month even when I did have it. They've been great for me and cut my bill by half (even before they ran that promotion), so I'm happy.
To anyone considering a switch, Sprint is raising their unlimited rate mid-month, so it would be worth moving quick.
That really sucks. Here's a little more on who it affects:
http://www.droid-life.com/2015/10/0...price-hike-more-details-about-who-it-impacts/
Down at the bottom, it sounds like you might not be charged if you have a really old plan that doesn't break out the data separately. I think my old Shared 700 plan has separate data, so I'm probably screwed. I chatted with Verizon, who said nothing was going to change because they haven't officially announced anything yet. Morons.
Been seriously considering Project Fi anyhow, so that's the way I'll go. It'll probably cut my monthly bill in half. I normally don't use much of my unlimited data anyhow.
SIMPLE Mobile cost only $55 for 10GB LTE data.
So how the hell were us 1% the top 5% that needed to be throttled last year?
even at $90 it's still cheaper than any other plan form. plus now i'll be using netflix and google music more often with it instead of my wifi drive since they're charging more.
Love my $55 cricket with 20/ gb
I'm still keeping mine. I'm turning my wifi off permanently tho...
I hope they loose a lot of those customers due to this! I hate to see good people give their hard earned money to such an EVIL company!

they only lose a percent of the 1%
Seems like if you are on contract, you don't have to pay the extra until your contract expires. So, I want to get back on contract with my UDP using one of the various methods if possible.
Is the Nexus 6 the best device on Verizon that can be rooted and use custom roms? Currently have a Note 4, and just utterly sick of its lag and lack of ability to do a damn thing I want. I need root back, but seems like every phone these days is unbreakable.
What about the Nexus 6P? Is that coming to vzw under contract discount upgrades?
I don't think it's possible to get on contract with Verizon anymore. There was an article about 3 months ago stating vzw had done away with contracts. It was at the same time they went to this s/m/l/xl data scheme.
I guess I lucked out. I have unlimited data and signed a new 2yr back in may. So like most everybody else, until then WiFi is a thing of the past and I'm just going to do everything on mobile until contract is up.
I think I'll make a nice 5gb file and put on Google drive and just constantly redownload it. See how high I can rack up my mobile data usage until then

You still can. Just have to select 2 year contract instead of device payment plan or purchase outright. May only be for current customers with available upgrades though.
the terms of the contract don't expire after two years, it's just the particular term of not leaving expires after two years. i wish i had kept my original contract so i could look it over. so you still have a contract with them, it's just the penalty for leaving that's expired, not the contract.
If you have a Nexus 6, you should probably check out T-Mobile. I left Verizon a few years back and I consistently have better signal in hospitals than people with Verizon. The Nexus has the best antenna and in my experience more than makes up for any minor differences between the companies. Plus I saved a couple hundred a month so I'm happy.

I'm glad I switched to Tmo when they were offering 2 lines unlimited data for 100$

The 6P will not be available through VZW for contract subsidized upgrades as far as I know. Please also remember that you cannot directly renew your UDP contract through verizon, they will force a new data plan on your line.
I'll just stick with my 100 buck 2 line family unlimited with sprint.
I simply canceled my home internet, raise my rate, that's cool... I'll raise my usage.
A quick note though I work for vzw (shameless plug) is that you will now be able to upgrade and keep your unlimite

from what i read it's not upgrade, but allow us to get on the payment plan to fully purchase a phone. i'd be better off using a credit card since i get a built in extended warranty on purchases. i never buy the TEP b/c it's not worth it for me.
