I am running rubiX Focused 1.9 and I tried installing the new Tron theme.
I ended up not really liking it so I tried installing black juice blue back over it. However, the system apps were themed with Tron and now they are still Tron themed with black juice blue installed. I don't like the way this looks so id like to try to perform a nandroid restore.
The only problem is i've never done this before. Should I wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache partition before I restore? Do I have to mess with anything in the mounts and storage menu?
I really appreciate any advice/help from people who have experience with restoring nandroids!
Thanks!
I never wipe anything when restoring a backup and have never had a problem. I just go into recovery, restore, reboot.

Like "Zwade01" Said.... I Don't Really Wipe Everything Everytime Either....(Although It Wouldn't Hurt) You Can Basically Just Restore!!
You Don't Have To Mess With The Mount Menu... Just Go To Nandroid And Select Your Backup, And Confirm!!!
Unless You Have A Issue With Memory Or Your Phone Lagging.....
I Wouldn't Bother!!

Contacts - Should always save them as "Google contact" so they automatically go into your contact list after logging in on your phone.
Messages - Go into market and search "SMS Backup" back it up then once you install your new ROM, download the same app again and restore it.
Apps - Use Titanium Backup to back up the apps. Then install it again after flashing and restore the apps.

Sure is. The simplest way is to make a backup with Clockwork recovery before you install the new rom and do wipe of data/factory reset, and all caches etc...
Once you have flashed the new rom, while still in Clockwork, goto Backup/Restore, choose Advanced, choose the backup you just made, and select only Data from the list. Everything you've asked for should be restored. Some widgets will not work on the first boot, you will have remove them from the home screen and re-add them.
Some apps will behave as if it's the first time you have run them, be aware of this.
This method makes for the simplest method of restoring everything that gets wiped when you install a rom that requires a full wipe of data + factory reset.
cool thanks, I got both methods done. gonna try to flash now. thanks

Holy heck. I had no idea Clockwork had this. Saves me a bunch of time.
Here I am thinking I knew what I was talking about

Does the backed up old data integer with a new rom/kernel though? I've been tempted to do this, but I'm worried that the data will conflict and cause issues.

Indeed, this method saves a lot of time.
I've had no issues using it, aside from widgets not working, until you re-add them to a home screen.

"Integer"? Did you mean integrate? or perhaps interfere?
I haven't had any issues using this method. I'd imagine any conflicts would be overwritten by the nature of restoring /data. If a rom author includes some .apks inside of /data, those will get over written. It's very easy to add them back though, just strip them from the roms zip, and copy over to the phone, then install.
I find this much easier than using Titanium Backup or some other app to restore apps and settings lost due to installing a rom.

While that seems to be perfect as far as restoring (and it does restore everything.) I seem to be having a problem with it once I run my rom, I'm having issues with sms locking up and the phone not coming out of sleep. I'm using Epic Exp 1.2.02 and Phoenix 1.43.
I've reloaded and restored date 3 diff times and still no luck..

Are you using SetCPU, while also having it set to something other Conservative mode? Try keeping it set to conservative. Also, SetCPU doesn't play nice with the Epic if you use a "Screen Off" profile. I don't have a solution other than to not use a Screen Off profile in SetCPU.
Boot recovery. Wipe data cache and dalvik (unless your rom requires somthing different) flash your rom/kernel. Reboot your phone and test. Determine whether the issue is with the rom/kernel or with the data restore. If the issue is the rom, head over to the rom's thread for support. If its not the rom boot into clockwork and try to restore data again. Maybe do an advanced restore?

Thanks dever76 for that tip, I now can switch to nightly builds on my Nexus. I appreciate it!
So I updated to nightly 14. After restoring apps and system data and reboot, home button doesn't work and the only 2 options that pop up when I plhold down power button are reboot and power off. Anyone know whats going on?

Did you wipe the cache and dalvik cache prior to installing this ROM.
I figured it out. Titanium backup was the culprit. I guess im not supposed to restore system with titanium.

naw, that's not recommend.
When you are upgrading from one ROM to the next ROM, with in the same family. Meaning like from CM7N13 > CM7N14 all you need to do is wipe the cache and Dalvik Cache then flash the ROM.
glad you got it hammered out none the less.

Restore =user apps= with Titanium Backup. If you have not yet synced with Google, just select the batch restore of uninstalled apps. If you've already synced with Google and had your Market apps sync, batch restore of User apps data.
For system apps, you've got to be judicious in your restores, because TB makes little distinction between some OS provision settings and applications that happen to be installed in /system. Just because something is green does not mean you can safely restore it.
Reportedly safe system stuff to restore via TB:
Alarm clock settings, Browser bookmarks, Email, SMS/MMS data, and ADW Launcher. I've done most of these. I find that ADW Launcher restores via TB require me to reset my widgets, which takes a minute. ADW has its own backup and restore, of course, if you prefer it.
First question: I notice that a fair % of the time when I try to do a restore from CWM, it tells me there's a MD5 mismatch. Is this just a symptom of a bad SD card -- that the backup did not save properly to the card?
Since it's no good to find out the backup is bad when I actually need it, I came up with a work-around, which was to try and immediately restore from the backup immediately after making it. If it gives me an MD5 error, then I make a new backup. Eventually I don't get an MD5 error and the restore works, and in theory it should be restoring the phone to the state it was in just a few minutes earlier -- i.e. nothing is changed.
However, after a successful restore and reboot, I tend to get a slew of FC's at startup from background apps. I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong -- is there some extra step I need to do after a restore using CWM?
Sounds like when you backd up you had some data issues that are being restored too your phone each time you restore. Bite the bullett reflash your rom don't restore. But before you do that try fixing permissions in cwm.
I would clear cache and dalvik before doing the backup...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
If you're using SRF, just reflash srf 1.1.1 right over it. It will repair your framework but save your personal data.
MD5 bmismatch is a result of renaming backups incorrectly or using ROM manager or Quick Boot to get into recovery. ONLY use 3 finger method.
Did not know that. You get a thanks.
I tried clearing cache and davik cache before backup. When I restored, it gave me a FC on Google framework or whatever that's called. I rebooted and did another restore from the same backup, then cleared cache and dalvik cache before rebooting, and that time it booted with no FC's.

Is "quick boot" when you don't power-down and then power-up with 3-fingers, but just do the 4-finger reboot? That would make sense that it would be causing the MD5 problem... good to know. Is that also what's causing the FC's when I restore?

if you arent properly shutting down you will almost always get FCs on reboot if you have a no journal rom...
Wow, I had no idea that was an issue (I'm quite new to Android and was thinking of the phone as being more like a digital watch than a personal computer). Will pulling the battery cause the same problems?
How do I fix the FC problems when that happens?
ummmm

that would be not shutting down properly like pulling the power cable out of your comp and turn it back on not goood to do alot wil be ok in light doses
Corrupt data is 100% the cause. The only problem now is trying to determine where the problem came from. It can be from many things, but to be safe, i'd reformat the SD card (backup all ur data first on a computer). And recreate a backup from the rom previously. I use "my backup root" from the market and it works like a charm when switching from rom to rom.

The 4 finger will cause corruption on ROMs without journaling, so yes. There is also a Quick Boot app that boots into recovery, same thing can happen. So for backups and restores, always power down then 3 finger into CWM.
Hi all... tonight I decided to try the Samurai kernel. Unfortunately, it boot-looped on me. No big deal I figured, I did a full nandroid before in ACS's CWM, so I'll just restore. Unortunately, doing so isn't working: all of my apps, data and settings are gone! It basically looks stock (although, interestingly, all the Sprint bloat I had manually removed before still seems to be gone, so the restore worked to a degree)... I've restored backups before and never had a problem so I'm guessing the kernel is somehow the culprit, but I think that got restored from the backup too so I don't know what's going on. I'm stock EI22 by the way.
Can anyone help me? I'm pretty frustrated at the moment.
Thanks,
Frank
Try restoring an older backup. If that works you can attempt an advanced restore data only from your recent backup to see if it was something in your setup.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That was a thought I had too... I tried TWO older backups that I still had, same problem. I also tried a factory reset and then a restore (in theory it shouldn't make any difference to factory wipe first, and sure enough it didn't, but figured it was worth a shot).
My only other thought is maybe if I odin back to stock, root & install recovery and then try the restore again... kind of a shot in the dark, really shouldn't matter, but maybe.
Did you clear cache and dalvik before flashing the new kernel? I wonder if ACS is the issue and if trying CWM 5 might help.

I was thinking the same thing D. The only other thing I can think of is bad reads from the sd card.
I hate asking too much questions.. But I was using clockwordmod to backup all of my things and try out a new theme. I ended up not liking the theme so then I went back to recovery and hit restore. Once it finished restoring and my phone reboots it goes through the samsung logo but on the boot animation it just stays.. like the verizon logo goes on forever and forever.. then the screen goes black.. I don't know what happened.. Is there anything I did wrong? Can I fix this to recover my stuff back? :/
What rom where you on prior to theme? Might just have to reflash the same apks that were in theme.

Assuming you wee on a deodexed rom that can be flashed in cwm, flash it again, and you'll be fine. You don't need to wipe data, just dalvik. Then restore your nandroid, if you want. But, unless you've done debloating, it won't be necessary. The only thing a nandroid would do, in that instance is put you back into your debloated state, with out having to go through and do it again.
