Get working GPS on ALL your ROMS without opening your phone... - Vibrant General

MUST HAVE ROOT!
THINGS NEEDED-
A Download of Axura ROM
WinRAR on computer to extract
A FILE EXPLORER THAT LETS YOU DELETE AND PASTE/MOVE FILES AROUND.
Suggested: Root Explorer(PAID), ASTRO might work, not sure.
IF YOUR GPS WORKS, DON'T USE THIS, IT WON'T HELP WITH ACCURACY AT ALL. THIS IS FOR PEOPLE WHOSE GPS JUST DOES NOT WORK AT ALL.
NOTE: This doesn't give 100% accuracy, but its off about 10-20 feet.
INSTRUCTIONS
After you have Axura Downloaded EXTRACT the file using WinRAR and then go into DATA/GPS/secgps.conf
Copy that file over to your SD Card, now use ROOT EXPLORER, or any other folder manager app you have, and go to data/GPS/ on your phone, you'll notice a secgps.conf
Rename that to 1secgps.conf (DO NOT DELETE YOU MAY NEED IT)
Now go to SD CARD and MOVE/COPY the other secgps.conf to the /data/gps
now MOVE the original the one with the 1 to your SD CARD and keep it safe.
Now if you have a Task Killer,(ATK) kill ALL applications, if you do not, just REBOOT.
After that, go to LBSTEST (*#*#1472365#*#*)
Run the Position Test,
IF your indoors, keep it at that screen until the Latitude and Longitude start giving info.
IF your outdoors, it'll probably take a minute or two.
Make sure to get atleast 4-5 Satellites, so your accuracy increases.
After that, your GPS should start working if it didn't before.
*Thanks to MASTER for his awesome ROM and the useful files in there.
*Support MASTER by going here and donating.
IF YOUR GPS DOESN'T WORK, PUT THE 1secgps.conf back to data/gps/ and rename it without the 1 and replace the other one.
If this doesn't work its most likely a hardware issue and here is a solution, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970

I've been using Axura since a few iterations back, to 2.2 now since release
It never helped the GPS like the hardware fix. Its a hardware issue plain and simple.

If I don't fix it, I will have to hard reset.

This sucks. Everything was going great but for someone reason lately, I am having trouble turning on my XV6800 from standby. Some times I have to hit the power button more then once. Or wait for a couple of seconds then it turns on. It is not dependent on the power button, because when I switched it to turn on when any button is on, it still won't turn on. What does get it out for good is if there is a call or a text that wakes its self up. But other times the power button works great.
I would love to solve this problem! I used SKTools to see what is running as soon as I hit the power button and hit it again to turn on. Both TimeWizard.exe and shell32.exe are at hundred for that second. Is that ok/normal? Have any suggestings before I hard reset?
If I do hard reset, I am wondering if instead of going to MR1 I should go with a WM6.5 rom. Is it really more trouble then its worth? I get about 21 of 22MB at startup (aftering clearing ram in beginning). What's the average for WM6.5 with the titan? I rather fix my problem and not hard reset, hate to reinstall all the software and do all the registry hacks all over again.
edit: Looks like this is an issue (a lot of people had it) that cannot be solved without hard reseting. So I still need to decide what route (MR1 or WM6.5) to go with...
I personally like 6.5. With the inclusion of a tool called nueKernel, many ROMs will boot with up to 28ish MB of RAM in high memory mode on a fresh install. In low memory mode, it's usually between 20 and 22. High memory mode, if you aren't aware, temporarily disables the camera. Low memory mode enables the camera. You can switch back and forth easily using a setting in your System menu.
Also, make note of any tools you currently use on your Today screen. Any third party additions may not exist for the new Titanium layout. There are a bunch of new add-ins for it that will most likely do everything that you need, but do some poking around first. You can also use the older today screen on 6.5 if you can't find what you need for Titanium, but that ruins a lot of the fun.
Since you use SKTools, you can also easily export any registry tweaks you put in, and re-import them on whichever ROM you decide to use. It's fairly easy.
There are a number of ROMs to choose from between XDA and ppcgeeks. Read some of the comments and check out what the chef includes. It will be pretty different than the official Verizon ROM you are used to, but that's usually a good thing. I currently use bbsandkm's 6.5 ROM from ppcgeeks, but that's personal preference. Ryan and TPLane here on XDA make some amazing ROMs that you can use, too.
But before you flash to any non-official ROM, please make sure you read up on the guides to do it properly. It's really pretty simple, but you need to just follow the directions.
Is the around 20MB the amount with Titanium? I love HTC Home since I can use the Today calendar. All these new plugins never show the complete day of apointments.
Yeah I would have to do some reading before I even consider. I do know I would have to downgrade to the original 6.0 OS before going custom. Would I have to go back to 6.0 again and then 6.1 if I decide I don't like 6.5? Already getting scared just thinking about it lol.

In high memory mode after installing all my programs, I start with between 25 and 26 meg free. That is using Titanium.
The only reason (I think) that you'd need to downgrade to 6.0 is if your GPS does not work after your upgrade. And no, you wouldn't need to re-install 6.1 during the process.
Downgrade is necessary if you have a pri of 2.03xx and want gps to work on your custom rom.
I got so sick of this problem I just hard resetted and went for MR1. I will switch to WM6.5 maybe later in the future.
However, I notice my Titan did it again today! It barely has anything on it right now. So I am guessing my memory card might be the problem. So much stuff on it (its a 16GB) like portable apps, every cab I have ever downloaded etc. That's my only guess. Would a memory card be causing this problem?

What you are experiencing is a DSOD (dark screen of death). Usually its because of something installed to your storage card that is always running(not good, things like that need installed to device memory). Also make sure you have no .exe's in the 2577 folder on storage card (if you have the folder).
Here are some possible examples of DSOD's
Disable the automatic ActiveSync checking. This is the official solution from Verizon Data Technical Support.
Do not install software on the storage card that might trigger automatically. That means: Absolutely no today plug-ins, no ring tones, nothing that runs in the background, and nothing that could accidentally be triggered if you hit one of the buttons of your device.
Do not store data that might be accessed automatically. Same thing. Basically, do not store mail attachments on the storage card if you have wireless sync.
Close programs that use the storage card before turning your device off. Magic Button is an excellent tool to do this.
If you do install programs on the storage card, do NOT use the "Programs" window or the start menu to start them. Instead, use a File Explorer to run them. If you use "Programs" or the start menu, that program will be in your list of recently accessed applications in the start menu. So the next time you turn your device on and click on the start menu, the system will access your storage card to load the icon of the application - this will create a noticeable delay of several seconds, if not DSOD.
Don't randomly install crap. Every single piece of software you install could interfere with your system. Limit the software you install to what you really need. Check the forums, some people named a few programs that explicitly did not work for them.
I hope this helps you out.
Wow thanks, that helps a lot!
edit: Not my day. Don't ask me why but I decided to clean some registry after cleaning up my card. Well I deleted something that effects me to not see the verizon mobile site. I posted about it before here. At least now I know what I did wrong with that problem. Anyway, if I were to hard reset, will it revert back to a clean MR1 with all the Verizon stuff? So far I have been just reinstalling MR1 which does it all. The reason I ask is I hate to wait until tonight to do this again. Thanks guys.

Wow, you learn something new every day! Amazing writeup.
It happened again last night but I am thinking it might be caused by the latest SKTools. But not sure since I had it almost a month before this happened. I might go all day without it and see if that is the case. Then if it is the I will get the lower version.
Also, I am going crazy here, which registry edit is to take away the keyboard lag? I cannot remember if it had to do with increasing the gyphe or whatever maybe taking away the speed of the keyboard when it lights up. I just cannot remember. I looked at tons of posts here and PPcgeeks but still cannot find or figure out which one did it. Thanks guys. I need to seriously remember these registry hacks for next time.
ok: it was not SKtools. I put it back on. I decided to wipe my memory card clean and start over. So far so good! Now I will have time to find some registry edits.

Install Mobile Defense As System App?

Can someone show me or post a link on how to install an app as a system app so it can not be uninstalled. I wanna do this with Mobile Defense so it can have access to the GPS as well since you can't get an exact location without GPS. I couldn't find anything useful while searching.
If you have root, you can pull the apk from /data and put it in /system with all the other system apps, but that won't give it access to gps. That is to say, no app will use gps unless it's designed to use gps. Moving it from one part of the phone to another doesn't re-write the code. So installing it to /system will do no good whatsoever.

Mobile Defense in the description on the Market that it can auto enable GPS if it has root. Also what tool could I use to move it to the system folder?
There's absolutely no reason why you would need to move it to /system man... it won't operate any differently. As for preventing it from being uninstalled, that's a problem with any of the security apps...

Moving it to /system/app will prevent it from being un-installed via the phone GUI or via a wipe. It makes it much harder for a casual user (or dumb thief) to remove it. So it does add some security... and it also allows the app to enable GPS even if the user has GPS disabled, which may be a big win for some.
Personally, I leave GPS enabled all the time. It doesn't use extra battery unless an app is actually trying to get a GPS fix. The rest of the time the GPS receiver is powered off. I don't keep apps on my phone that wake up GPS all the time.
All you need to do is open a superuser shell and move the apk from /data/app to /system/app ... or use one of the superuser file managers to do it.
Note that you won't get updates this way, which is somewhat of a pain.

Pretty sure apps installed to /data can enable GPS as well. Anyway, without rooting your phone, you can't move stuff to /system.
Frankly, I think the best security regime we can presently employ on our phones is a combination of the security pattern lock and WaveSecure. The phone will be locked down if there are too many wrong attempts at the pattern, and WaveSecure will automatically lock down the phone and send GPS location if a SIM card is replaced.

Apps in /data can't enable GPS anymore. I think 1.6 changed that policy, but it might have been 1.5.
I tried wavesecure but I found it way too easy to circumvent, and it didn't always work. In fact last time I tried it their web portal was down. I prefer the design of Mobile Defense, but to each his own - I'm happy there's competition!

The root file manager should offer a way to remount /system as a read-write filesystem. Normally it's read-only. You should set it back to read-only when you're done.

MR2 Update bugs, fixes, mods etc.

This thread is for those of you who have already got the MR2 update and would like to report any bugs, features etc. This thread will make it easier to follow up and find any similarities. Also to find fixes faster then digging through different threads.
Please DO NOT post "Oh I haven't gotten this patch yet","WTF it's not up yet","Installing it now" etc...
Please post anything you have noticed or would like to share about MR2 here.
I have the Swedish version of MR2, these are my observations.
(1) I noticed as well that when the device is waking up, the SD Card takes a second or 2 to show up. I am sure this has to do with power management. Now this causes a slight delay when you wake up the device and can be annoying if you are like me and want "Instant response". I stated already in another thread that I had applied the "SD Card Fix" that was created for MR1. Now there is no delay and thats the way I like it, the power consumption difference is not noticeable, so I am not concerned at all that it might use 0.0..something milliamps more power. Take note, that I did not suffer memory card missing or sudden data loss problems. It just took a while for the card to pop up after start up.
(2) The GPS problem with TomTom remains, I still need GPS Gate in order to use TomTom.
FIXED! See here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6494250&postcount=14
(3) The G Sensor problem remains, I cannot use any other apps apart from SE's that work with the G Sensor, very annoying!!!
This Java -> "Water Level" app works, so maybe some other ones might. But even that one is SE's. I will check more into it later.
(4) Visual LED notifications don't seem to turn on until you wake up the device, the audio alerts are instant though.
I will update as I find more, otherwise everything else(I have tested) on this device is faster now, including SMS typing via keyboard.
CAB for SD Card fix -> http://rapidshare.com/files/389695879/X2_SDFix.cab
EDIT:
Please note! I will no longer be working on trying to fix any bugs on the X2.
I'm sending it back and getting an X10 instead, so my efforts will shift over to Android now.
Perhaps down the road when they come up with a better OS or something, I will buy another X2. Until then, I hope others who have been helping out now will continue to do so.
Thanks for the clarification that the notification LED problem has still not been fixed. I'm afriad it might be time for me to say goodbye to my X2 as this was one of the reasons why I bought the device and if they still haven't fixed it now, it is unlikely they are ever going to.

I am sure there are more updates or fixes on the way.
Besides that, not many devices offer LED notification anyways.
Today was the first day my X2 has run superbly, I have not needed to install "Advanced Config Tool" or "SK Tools". No Stalls, no sluggish behaviour. Good battery life... I think it's on it's way to perfection. Now we only need HardSPL
im also dissapointed that theyve not bothered to fix the LED notifications. was one of the main reasons i stuck with SE. most SE phones have LED notification (which work), an immensly useful but simple feature. it worked fine on the X1. seems to be another casualty of their over zealous power management. the phone doesnt wake up when a text is received like the X1 used to. im sure someone clever can get the X2 behave as it should do either, their must be something in the registry that can be modified like the SD card fix..
^^ Yep, I am sure we can tweak this bad boy somehow...
But meanwhile.
To enable "Auto rotation"
Edit the following Registry Key. YOU WILL NEED A REGISTRY EDITOR! If you don't know what it is, don't bother with this! Just move along...
HKLM\Services\MultiService\mods\Rotation\AccelBasedRotationEnabled
Change value to "1"
This will help with many things including this -> TomTom!
To enable TomTom Rotation, go further down to AADRClients
(1) Add "New Key" Call it TomTom or whatever.
(2) In that key add new "String Value"
(3) Value name "ModuleFileName"
Value Data "\Storage Card\Program\Navigator\TomTom Navigator.exe"
(You will need to check your folders are the same, edit the text accordingly)
(4) Make sure it saved.
(5) Reboot device
(6) Start TomTom when it's loaded rotate your device left, viola!

after the install of MR2 all the data on my mammory card got corrupted. Not right away but couple of hours later. I have Generik_UK. Then i formated the card. installed the SDfix (its on this forum somewhere -> search) but i think its not everithing as it should be. the data did not get corrupred again but the micro SD sometimes is not visible in the file manager.
I also had some problems with total freezing of the phone (two times in 2 days time). that only happened when i was doing heavy usage on the camera and the picture viewing I guess the RAM got full ar something. then i deleted all the panells and the panelmanager to save some RAM. Ill let you know if it helps.

Yep, I guess I should have mentioned that
instead of hardSPL to flash custom roms has anyone tried to hack the sony update program?? if it could be fooled into thinking the custom firmware is the latest firmware then get it to install it onto the phone...
For those of you not in the KNOW.
TomTom will work without installing GPSGate.
On the X2 – go to Settings/System/External GPS and change GDP9 TO COM8.
Run FASTGPS and download the latest Sat Data.
Open TomTom and change the GPS Device from Built in GPS receiver to Other NMEA GPS receiver and select COM8.
Wait a few secons for the Receiver to kick in and away you go.....
ok,can some one to test video mode, record some video and see what is the frame rate in new MR2,is it still low? or is it better then 15fps

I guess you look for Storage Card in File Explorer? What I have seen is that because of the card delay mentioned earlier the card appears at the bottom of the folders/files list and not among the folders in alphabetic order, at least on my device. Can be worth a look even though you applied the card fix and i haven't.
Two flaws:
1.
Auto lock on, display blacked out
Listening to music via slideview
Phone rings (technically speaking)
The phone vibrates and perhaps play half ringtone or just not at all.
Without the music listening the phone rings as it should, using generic ringtone so far so no storage card error here I suppose.
2.
Listening to music via slideview. Songs stored at Storage card.
Media player plays one, two, three songs and halts in the middle of a song.
Going to try a different media player to see what happens. I have not installed any yet because my favourite player, Pocket Player appears to have some compatibility issues with winmo 6.5. I know of the memcard fix and will eventually try that as well.
Was thinking of a new thread, quite the opposite of this. A "what programs works on X2 MR2". haven't installed that much yet, perhaps someone else can start
SE contact reading chinese?
Can anyone confirm if the SE contacts (not the WinMo) in MR2 can read Chinese (after installing either new fonts or localization)?
Thanks!
so i changed from GENERIC_SG to GENERIC_UK, rather time consuming but worth it IMO, but down to the nitty gritty details.
I'm still in the process of personalising it (adding my ring tones, loading old sms's etc) but from first few things i've done the speed between screens is quite phenominal
Also by accident i just found that you can move icons around ALOT easier, . BIG bonus as it doesn't mean i have to scroll all the way to the botom to find my new apps. - to do this just press down on the icon (using stylus or finger) and move it to were ever you want it.
more feedback to follow
I think this thread lost its and the thread starters intentions long ago. Its sad since it could have been a great resource. Some moderation would be apritiated.
Thanks, A.D

Files Unmovable

So I was trying to move some files around on my a500 today, backing up stuff, getting things organized, when I came across a pretty frustrating problem.
My Iconia will stop responding when trying to copy / backup / move certain files. Sometimes it does it with a book, sometimes with a picture, either way, once it decides it cannot move that file, the file is stuck. It's been doing this since I got it and it kinda feels like an issue one would have if they had a bad memory card. This is definitely the internal Acer memory though.
My question is this, is this a known issue, do I need to send my tablet back to Acer, or is there a fix for it somewhere?
I think it's a limitation of how the transfer protocol works. Some large files won't copy too/from the device properly. I really can't find a real pattern to give a definitive answer.
Hmm... Well, the file that I'm trying to move right now, is 1.4mb. Not very big at all, and it stops responding.
Well, it maay have just been my laptop, its old and picky and a complete piece of junk. Using a file manager my tablet has 0 problems moving things around on its own.
Sent from my A500 using xda premium
This is a known problem. I haven't yet come across it in the ICS leak, so maybe it's fixed there... otherwise just 'cp src dest' in the shell (needs busybox), which works reliably.
I run into this problem occasionally when trying to move a file. My solution is to copy and paste it and then delete the original. For some reason it copies just fine but when I try to move it, it fails.

I've been reporting that KingoRoot corrupted my phone. The symptoms were swipes lags, typing lag delays, Wi-Fi lags before it turns on and more problems. I fixed the performance problems and it is too good to be true. I went through a lot of trial and error but here is a synopsis of what I did.
I used Root Browser to change the name of every file and folder inside the efs folder. I just added a 1 to the end of the names so I could revert back if needed.
I rebooted the phone, went back to check the efs folder and it had regenerated everything I needed to keep. And it didn't load the junk files. The phone runs like it's using AdAway on steroids. give it a few minutes and it will rebuild the advertising host files. But the best part is it didn't load the spyware left behind by KingoRoot and KingRoot. That keyboard lag was probably spyware recording keystrokes and the lags navigating were probably due to conflicts between the Google host file and the spyware. I don't know for sure but Now, Even the ESPN website loads fast on Chrome. I just did this today so I'm still testing but I haven't got a phone solicitation since I've done this. I don't know if it's a side effect or what. But that would be great
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEXT: I found a fix for the Wi-Fi lag turning on and the phone forgetting the Wi-Fi password. I went to esf/carrier/HiddenMenu and changed it from off to on. Then I used the app Phone Info Samsung to do a RTN reset from Secret Codes menu. My Wi-Fi is back to normal.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I actually did the Wi-Fi fix first, then after I seen it had corrected that problem I Odin back to N910VVRU2BPA1 re-rooted, Restored my TWRP backup data then I did what I'm calling the SPYWARE FIX.
But the best part is it didn't load the spyware left behind by KingoRoot and KingRoot. That keyboard lag was probably spyware recording keystrokes and the lags navigating were probably due to conflicts between the Google host file and the spyware.

Is there any evidence that Kingoroot installed spyware? I used it and haven't experienced any of the issues you've reported.
Very nice! Is this in relation to and correct your DM-Verification problem?
Also do you know what files do not need to be in that folder/subfolders? It looks like there is a bunch of junk in mine, especially the files with very long alpha-numeric strings, but I am not that familiar with how the folder works and what may not need to be there.
What is the RTN fix for WiFi? I see it listed in the app, but not sure what it will reset.
I've been using a Note 4 Dev Edition for the past year, rooted and running MOROM. My issue is that the WiFi connection will just disconnect for no reason and it will not show any WiFi devices unless I turn it off and then back on. I have to do this a few times a day.

I read that the RNT reset clears more personal information than a normal Factory Reset. I did it without a sim card inserted.
I fixed the performance problems but it still says DM Verification failure in stock recovery. That doesn't bother me. as long as the phone works.

I was just curious if there's anything specific in EFS that would indicate spyware from Kingoroot.

I did a test and even KingRoot puts junk in the efs folder. KingoRoot is what caused my DM Verification failure.
your mileage may vary
Are there any specific files that either KR or KoR place in the EFS folder? I'm not familiar enough with the folder and what should or shouldn't be in there, it looks fairly junked up on my device, but then again all the files I have in there could be legit and needed.
Maybe we could all contribute to am EFS Cleanup utility to prevent the spyware mess of this convoluted rooting process? Haha.
best day ever

This has been the best day ever as far as performance. I don't know what it was but I deleted something that was really slowing the phone down. I started with a phone that I was going to crush then make a warranty claim because it was operating so poorly. I don't need to do that now. For the record, I call some Google and Verizon software " Spyware " it was not just the rooting process. It would be interesting to find out what was in those junk files but I have seen no adverse effect by renaming them. Then after I seen they had been regenerated I made a backup copy then I deleted them.
I have went ahead and used this method of renaming all files and folders inside of EFS, and it regenerated most of the folders and everything, the most marked difference was inside the SFS folder, in my old renamed folder I had about 25 files with very long alpha-numeric strings, now I only have two files in there. Can I, after backing up just in case, get rid of all of the files/folders with the 1 at the end? Will leaving them in there do anything like slightly increase RAM use, or are they just there but dormant?

I wonder how much space is allowed in the efs partition. I ASSUME my TWRP backup could restore it if needed. Also I made a copy of the 1,'s then deleted them. I see no reason to look back. Life is good.
Do you feel the speed? I have re-deleted everything inside the efs folder several times. Every time it regenerates.
EDIT: Another benefit I,ve noticed is the time of the post is correct now on XDA before It always would show the wrong time for a post.
Hard to say it's not placebo, but actions on the phone actually feel a bit faster, for instance the animation for unlocking the phone seems to go at a quicker speed and an already slightly laggy game itself, Star Wars Heroes, seems to run somewhat better now.

I noticed after I deleted the files the phone asked me again for my preferences on some things and Googles targeted ads have gone away. And I haven't received phone solicitation since I've done this. I'm wondering if there was a file in there that was advertising my phone number.

So when doing the RTN Reset, you're phone is reset (like doing a factory reset) and you have to set up all your info, settings and apps in it again? If so, I would hold off doing that, as that would take me a lot of time. But I could still try the ESF folder trick and see if that helps. Since I have the Dev Edition, it is rooted without those King apps, so probably no spyware on it.

yes it is a factory restore but you can save a lot of time with the TWRP data backup. If you're not having any Wi-Fi problems I think I'd skip it

The only WiFi issue I have is that the phone will lose WiFi connectivity a few times a day and I have toggle it on and off. But the phone has done it on every ROM that I have tried, so it could be an issue with the hardware itself.
I did edit all the files and folders in the efs, and the phone is working a bit smoother. Before, the unlock screen was always slow and stuttering, but now it is smooth and fast.

I don't even know why any of this is working but it is. Use your own discretion.
After some more testing I had to undo the renaming of a few of the files and place them back in their original folders to fix VOLTE/Wifi Calling/Bluetooth that stopped working, can't find any other issues so far though.

It would be good to have a list but I've fixed two phones that I was ready to trash just by deleting everything. Last year I had Verizon remove HD calling from my account because my calls were more distorted with HD calling. I have a separate Google number and it works on Wi-Fi better than my Verizon number.
Although now with the Spyware fix my Verizon calls are clearer. And This is day three without a solicitation call. UNREAL
Nice! Is there a way to get VOLTE without turning on the HD Calling function? With it turned off my phone calls go to 1x mode and I can't do any data related functions while on the phone. Maybe something is messed up on my end configuration wise that only allows that functionality with it turned on?
Second note anyone have any idea what all the files in the SFS folder are? I had almost 20, now down to 4 and everything is working as it should.
