I am going to be in Germany, Austria and Italy in the near future and likely won't have data (unless I can find a reasonably priced SIM with data). Are there any GPS apps for the HD2 that don't require a data plan?
Thanks in advance.

what about turning off agps? The assisted part of AGP doesn't use any data, it just gets passively info from the GSM signal, that's all.
Also, for the top, almost every navigation software has its own maps to copy on a memory card, so you don't need to connect to online maps.
Navicomputer is not a navigation software, but more of a tracking one, and it can download maps off openstreetmap through a pc companion.

Roaming data calls
Just in case you don't know this:
LEO somehow finds its way to make data connections no matter what you do, and it may result in the bill you don't want to see...
I haven't tried it, but people here are suggesting "Modaco nodata" as a safe solution. I would suggest you to google it, if you haven't already.
I wouldn't even risk it with a contact sim. either leave your sim at home or trial a pay as you go sim card before you leave

This is by far the smartest solution, or you can also put in a dummy SIM to avoid the "NO SIM" message.

+1 here. when I think again, everything else is experimenting.
Thanks for all the advice everyone. Much appreciated.
Use TomTom. Not data needed.
Get Dynamic+1's NoDataInRoaming. It will automatically turn off and keep off your data connection as soon as the phone starts to roam. It works great. I use it all the time when I go over the border to the Excited States.

According to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503131&page=33
it doesn't yet work with HTC HD2, until radio update. Or does it?
Been using NoData for months, works flawlessly. Just remember to re-disable any connections if you do change the SIM card.
Apparently not according to the guy who wrote it. I have a Tilt2/Rhodium and guess just assumed that it would work. Good catch. When he gets it working its a great little app.
avoid iguidance, won't work with hd2 (usa). although it worked with my tytn2.

.....i'm still searching for a product that is confirmed to work.

I know from a friend of mine it's possible to use google maps without the data connection if you download the maps on your phone/storage card (but he has an Iphone, so I am not sure if this works on the HD 2)...
And if you want to be safe to not have any data bill from abroad, you should install Mocom NoData and make an 'offline' profile on your phone, so it won't have any data server to connect too...
CoPilot
How about CoPilot Live 8? They have a link to videos posted on YouTube showing a guy running the app on an TMOUS HD2 in Washington State.
A one time fee of $30 sounds a lot better than paying TeleNav $9.99 a month.

I have been using Co Pilot Live for some time now...Works great, does not require data, and not having to worry about a monthly fee is also great.
I even ran it in airplane mode to show my wife that it does not require a data signal to work (she was worried about using it on road trips)
(I was a little bugged that I had to pay another 30.00 to download it for my HD2 when I had paid 30.00 to put it on my MT3G...but it still beats having a monthly fee...my next test will be to see if I can use the same key to install it on my wifes HD2 once se gets hers)
If you travel abroad...your fees will vary as they charge per map...ex: The North America map is $30.00 and covers all of Canada, U.S. and Mexico.
I use Co-Pilot Live. Maps are downloaded to SD card. Not sure if they have European maps though.

no because the device doesnt hav an independent gps built into it
searched the forums with little info about my situation, other than that it seems to be happening to a handful of others.
havnt changed any settings or added apps or anything to my phone for several weeks if not months. i am using the cell evo v1 rom. 2.11.50.20 radio. i dont have a proxy server running.
for the last 2-3 days my location has only updated itself once. google maps cant find me, as well as bing. manual update does nothing. soft reset does nothing. wifi connect does nothing. i can get on the internet, sms, mms, etc etc.
i read on tmonews.com that tmobile was turning on HSPA+ in my region in the last couple days, along with 18 or so cities around the US, can this have something to do with my problem?
not sure what else to do...cant find any info.
thanks
I'm having this problem now as well. Been working on it for a couple days. T-Mo has had HSPDA+ here in St. Louis since before I got my HD2, so I don't think it's due to them adding it to your region.
Strange things I've noticed so far:
It works if Wifi is on, but not connected to a network.
It works if you are connected through EDGE, but not 3G or H.
The AGPS server IP address in the registry is a private network address: 10.something. If someone with a stock TMOUS rom can look in /HKLM/HTC/SUPD AGPS/ for the Server IP key and post the contents, I'd like to know if it's the same.
These issues are the same as everyone with different devices has been having for a while now, but the older phones with the issue seem to work in some areas without the wifi and edge workarounds, and not others. Mine so far works nowhere without the workarounds.
Try going into the manila slider and on the weather tab press menu > Enable my location
^ that isn't even an option for me on the manila slider anymore for some reason. I disabled the gsm and ran on edge and it was able to locate. as soon as turned gsm back on it wouldn't do it again.
bump, anyone?

Maybe you should move to Denver. Colorado is beautiful this time of year.
Kidding aside, how about trying a hard reset?
from what i've seen on threads somewhat related to this, hard reset is a 50/50 shot. if i'm going do a hard reset where i would have to redo all of my settings and such, i'm just going to wait until the new version of the cell evo rom comes out. which is supposed to be soon.
i really dont understand what would cause this to suddenly happen. especially since it still works on edge. i tried wifi once and it didnt work, but i think i had my network connection still on. but regardless, this is pretty rediculous.
If you've traveled anywhere, your radio may be 'stuck' on a distant tower. This has happened on a couple of our phones and the tmo folks had to do a push/release/unstick type of signal to the phone. May be worth a try.
^ok, i called tmo tech support. mentioned about the possibility of sending me a reset signal, she said that was a possible scenario, but she was pretty confident that it was because my sim card is an older model sim card. claims that the sim card in my phone wasnt designed for 3g services, and any sort of change in the network (like them adding HSPA+ like i mentioned above) could interfere with the connections. she said the fact that i could do this on edge and not 3g is a dead giveaway that the sim card is the problem.
she said they are in the process of trying to get people to go to the corporate stores and switch to the latest sims. apparently this is happening to a lot of people, but the sim should be the fix.
i guess i'll shoot up there later on after work, or tomorrow, and i will give you guys a follow up on this.

Actually that does make perfect sense, and I suspect you'll find it clears up your problem. In fact, for anybody else that finds this thread, I suggest you try that step before other alternatives like hard-reset or ROM flashing.
yep, new sim card did it guys. i would recommend anybody having any connection issues to see if your sim cards are up to date.
edit: it was working before. now its only updating on edge again. not sure what to think or do. going to wait and see what happens when the new rom I use comes out.
any other ideas on this guys? new sim card only worked for a few hours. back to only updating 'my location' on EDGE and WIFI. pretty damn annoying. thinking about calling tmo support again to see if they'd send me a 'reset signal', but with having the new sim card you'd think that it wouldnt be a factor anymore, because i'd imagine it's already been reset.
the only other thing i could think of, and thats what tmo would probably tell me to do, is a hard reset. i'm sure they wouldnt be too happy with having a flashed rom on there either (not that i would tell them anyways).
if nobody has any other ideas but a hard reset, i'm going to wait for a couple days until the new release of the cell evo rom.
thanks
Yea. That weird problem hit my second HD2. I bought one 2 weeks ago and after your post paid more attention and of course noticed my location being Denver....
I deleted all preset locations and added custom one. It updated only once, right after location was activated....
However, wife's phone HD2 which was purchased on 3-24-2010 or original release date does not have that issue, ROM was updated to 2.13 a month ago or so...
Here you go...
Two of the same phones (supposedly), with the same stock ROM, with the SIM cards acquired about 5 years ago. One shows weather update without problem, second (newer one) has that dreaded nag....
I had a similar issue where the weather would only update once then freeze and never update again. All other 15 location updated but not my location. This was normal for stock and 2 roms, then I used energy rom and it now works. huh? Go figure.
Strange...I'm in St. Louis, as well...MO, that is...and it is working fine for me.
Try downloading the HTC connection wizard. This has fixed connection issues I've had before. I know Tmo has 3 networks to choose from MMS, Data, and Internet. I beleive you want data and may be your phone is selecting Internet.

ya that didnt work. either. still does it on edge though. the cell evo rom update will hopefully be here soon, if that doesnt fix it, the i'm not sure what to do.
I also have the problem of weather for my current location not updating (and the location not updating either). I have had the phone for almost a month and it updated regularly, although I noticed an occasional lapse for an hour or two. Following the suggestion by misticninja, I switched the band to Edge and I was able to update the location and weather. When I switched back to auto (3G), the update failed. It occurred to me that when I am in my basement office at home, I get Edge, not 3G. That may be why I got updates there. But I am sure it has updated in the past at my work location where I have very good 3G. Is this an HTC problem or a T-Mobile problem?

I'm having this problem ever since Tmo announced HSPA+ (4G speeds), but my sim is only 2mo. old! Is that an old sim?
You need to have your location enabled. Go to settings tab the location and then click on enable my location.
Hello guys,
I've recently bought an AT&T atrix and waiting to receive it.
I was wondering if I can use the phone to do other things like browse internet via wifi while waiting for unlock code to be sent. (or will the phone be unusable until unlocked and simcard installed?)
I do have the IMEI sent from the seller, but I am too afraid that there may be a typo which would mean I would have to wait again when my phone arrives.
So it's a real dilemma.... If it can be used to do other things, I will wait to purchase the unlock code when i get the phone. If not, I will order now and hope that its 100% correct imei
Yes you can. I had to wait almost 6 days for my unlock code so I can painfully confirm this lol
On a related note, I have an Atrix as I'm using as my main phone. I'm also getting an Inspire as a backup, and as just an "F-around and hack to pieces" phone.
Is there a way to get a duplicate of my sim card to keep in the Inspire so that I don't have to physically swap sim cards everytime I want to use the other phone? I know I can use the Inspire over wifi, or even w/ a tetherered Atrix to use and access apps, etc.
What is everyone else who has two phones using their second phone for? Thanks!
Yea i got my unlock code in two days. And for cheap. Let me know if you need one OP

You can always use the second phone (except for samsung galaxyees) as full time gps. ofcourse a gps app with maps included is required without a sim

Do you know of any apps like that I can't find any?
some of gps apps i know that use preloaded maps are - CoPilot Live, iGo My Way, NDrive 11.
Also some apps don't support all phones (resolutions) and countries (maps). so make sure you check compatibility with your secondary phone.
i needed a sim card in the phone to do other operations, but the sim didn't need to be active.
I have a n9005 XEO that i bought on ebay. it was working fine for about 5 months now until a few days ago when it just stopped getting cellular signal altogether. no calls, no data, nothing. it seemed to corespond to me using towlroot, installing supersu, and a couple of xposed add-ons, but everything seemed to work fine for a few days before i had this problem. I tried making sure that airplane mode was off, data was enabled, that i had the apn settings correct for my provider (at&t, USA), I even went so far as to restore to factory settings, and then flash another rom (the stock s5 port i found here in the dev forum). still not getting cell signal at all). I went so far as to go to the local at&t store and ask them to place my sim in a known good phone to make sure it has service (and it does and is provisioned properly and i'm paid up). my note sees the sim (i.e. no "sim not found" messages), just plain no service as if i were in a dead zone. the phone hasn't been mishandled, i've tried pulling the battery and putting it back in... I can't think of anything i'm missing here besides trying to flash the modem (which i can't seem to find the stock modem (n9005xxuenc2) or firmware on a site that doesn't take 7 hours to download it from.
can anybody help? (either with a mirror that doesn't suck for the latest stock firmware or latest stock modem, or offer any other suggestions?)

it's an n9005 xeo from poland, I'm in the USA on AT&T. I downloaded the firmware successfully from sammobile and installed it with odin 3.07 which seemed to go successfully but I still get absolutely no cellular
I've tried using the default apn, tried using at&t's apn settings (which i remember having to do last time before i got data but i'd always been able to make calls and that's not working right now either), no effect...
anybody have any ideas?

So you're saying it worked perfectly for 5 months, and then suddenly it went haywire on you? Did you do any major changes before it happened?
I also tried flashing the XXUENC2 and ZHUENB5 modems from here with no effect.

as i noted I rooted it with towlroot, installed supersu, and a coupe of xposed add-ons. but everything was working afterwards for about a week before i had this problem. otherwise, I was using my phone one night, i wake up, and see that i have no service. it was after a big storm so i figured they were doing service on the tower, until my work iphone rings (on the same network) and that feeling of dread set in so i went about trying to diagnose the problem and here i am.

even if it were blacklisted, it should still allow me to place 911 calls and the like. it should work like a deactivated phone. it's not. just in case i was wrong, I also verified the imei on swappa and they confirm that it is indeed NOT blacklisted.
also i'm not sure why it would be blacklisted to begin with. it was working one day then i went to use it the next and bam, not working. i don't get it.

Sounds like your IMEI got tampered or stolen and got blacklisted. Usually this would happen, especially when buying phones online.

But I've used several reputable services to check my IMEI number and they all say that my imei is in good standing... I don't get it. besides, what causes an imei to be blacklisted to begin with? - I wasn't trying to circumvent any security features, had no malware, no reason at all for an accounts admin to want to get me off the network. my account is in good standing, and my sim still works in an old iphone that i've got (i'm using that until i can sort out my regular phone situation).

The fact that someone had the phone with them can easily get it stolen. It's a plain 15 digit number, easily forgeable just by looking at the box, and since it has no authentication, people can just get your phone blacklisted by placing it on a defunct phone that hacks the network (or something).
well tonight i took it apart to see if there was a problem with the antenna cables, connections to the various peripheral devices and such and alas, no effect... still does exactly the same thing after field stripping the unit and resenting everything. if it's hardware, it's nothing i can tell...
I was also able to generate a .pit file, grab the latest build for my csc from sammobile (takes forever) and did a nand erase in odin with the pit and the downloaded stock rom... everything went great, but it got me to exactly the same place i'm at... working phone, no service. I have no money, but i think i'm going to just end up ebaying it and buying an s3 until i can save up enough for a note 4 or nexus 6... for now, i'm on a crappy old iphone 4 with a broken lock button, but that's another thread.
well it's been about a month and a half since i've had a decent phone (my 3 phones ago iphone 4 really doesn't cut it). after giving it some thought, I think i might buy a broken-screen sm-n900t, and swap it's mainboard into my phone. hardware-wise i believe they are exactly the same, it should be easily rooted with unlocked baseband,it would give me LTE on at&t, and it should be easily unlocked so i can use it on at&t... it should also only cost me 1/8 the cost of a good condition used n900t. ($60 or so on ebay i hope?).
still pretty sad that such a nice phone quit on me so quickly

Why don't you swap the N9005's screen onto the N900T and keep it like that? The N900T if I can recall, has the most bands available worldwide and if you're already replacing it, just enjoy the vast amount of customizations and potential the N900T has.
Did you pursue all avenue including Samsung service/repair centre or even Samsung line enquiry to confirm it's not blacklisted?

that's basically the plan, except the motherboard lives on the display side of things, so it would be swapping in a new motherboard (n900t). we both describe the same plan of action.
I've had my Essential phone for about a month. I can't get voice to work on my cell carrier Total Wireless. It has a new SIM from them in it and all I can get working is data, which works fine. I've used this same SIM on my Moto X Pure Edition, Moto G5 Plus, iPhone 6 Plus and Acaltel A30. It works fine on all of them. Voice & Data. 4G LTE.
I've contacted Total Wireless Tech support, a waste of time. And Essential Tech Support, another waste of time. I've got something like 36-38 emails with them, none of them are helpful. Any ideas anyone? I like the phone, but it's useless without voice.

You never said, so I'm going to ask, but did you reset your network settings? Reset your APN to default? Verify the APN was correct? Don't think you can change it on stock but maybe you could on a custom ROM if that's the issue. Reset the whole phone? If you've done all that maybe try a custom ROM. If that doesn't work, maybe you've got a bad Mic? Can you hear others if they call or can you not make/receive phone calls at all?
My Essential is completely stock. Also to clarify Total Wireless runs on Verizon's network.
Also I have done a complete reset of the phone. It's not the mic, because I can't even connect to the network. Data works great, but when I try to make a call it immediately drops my LTE connection. No chance to even test the mic. I'm not getting that far.

Also I have done a complete reset of the phone. It's not the mic, because I can't even connect to the network. Data works great, but when I try to make a call it immediately drops my LTE connection. No chance to even test the mic. I'm not getting that far.

If you didn't try it yet and you have the option, disable Enhanced 4G LTE Mode in Network Settings. If this fixes the issue for you, please report it to Essential using their beta feedback site.

Total wireless customer myself. The only way I could get it to work was to buy a total wireless branded cell phone that has VOLTE capabilities. I bought a samsung galaxy sky and activated it then put the sim that came with it into my essential phone. The sim cards that come with these "special" phones seem to be the only ones that can have VoLTE on total wireless since technically they don't support it.
I wish I had better news but so far this is the only way I could get it to work. If you do decide to buy a total wireless phone just leave it in a drawer somewhere. If you activate it with another sim or return it to the store you bought it from, it will deactivate the special sim that came with the phone.

Ok, this is what I was looking for. A TW customer with an Essential phone. Thank you your response! I assume that I have to do a network reset on my phone first. Where did you buy your Samsung Sky? Online with Total Wireless or at Walmart or somewhere else? The reason I ask is I have a Walmart in town with Total Wireless phones, but the staff are a bunch of idiots.
Thanks again.
Also I'm wondering if I could buy the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL 4G LTE phone from TW instead. It's about half the price of the Sky.

I bought mine online about a year ago when I had an HTC phone with the same problem so I'm not sure if the phone is available for purchase anymore. I do know that a Total wireless branded Iphone SE will work as well. I'm sure there are other phones that will work but couldn't tell you which ones they are. the big thing is to look for a phone that has VoLTE (voice over LTE) enabled by default or one that is VoLTE only and has no CDMA radio in it. I wish I could tell you for sure which current ones would work but I have not had to look for a compatible phone for a year now.
The APN settings from the link a few posts up works for me. Just make sure when you activate your total wireless phone only enter IMEI number for that phone. If I log into my total wireless account it shows my line as having the galaxy sky even though I'm using my essential phone.
Here is a good place to learn what the current best method is
Ok, I got a cheap Total Wireless phone over the weekend. Following the above advice I authorized the phone on the Total Wireless web site and then turned on the phone and let it do it's setup and recognition with Total Wireless. All went well. I powered off the phone and put it's SIM in my Essential phone. All seems to be working. Voice, Data and also VoLTE. Calls going through and voicemail is set up. All is good so far.
Thanks sasquatch23 for your help.
Glad to help. Just curious, what type of phone did you end up buying in case anyone else has this problem?

I got a Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro from Walmart. It was $29.95 I think. Cheapest one that I could find there that looked like it would work and it did. Thanks again.
