[Q] Hardreset hardware key combo? - Venue Pro General

Two days after the sdcard swap, suddenly im getting stuck at the dell bootup screen and wont boot up (not boot loop, just showing "dell" forever). first i suspect the sdcard is faulty, but it worked fine on the hd7 after hard reset, so i insert it back to the venue pro and try to bootup and hard reset it... guess what, i cant boot up the phone. Now i thought i can go into the reset screen like i did on the hd7 and hard reset it via bootloader, but after much searching, i cant access the format screen, only the "connect to pc" screen. Swapping to the original 8gb sdcard, i get infinite bootloop.
Supposedly the hardware key combo for hardreset is VolDown + Camera, but that brought me to the "connect to pc" screen; i also tried VolDown + VolUp, VolUp + Camera, VolUp + VolDown + Camera, nothing works
anyone got any idea?

have you tried power off and then hold vol up and down and while holding them down hit the power button, or power off and the vol up or down plus camera

nope... all of them brought me to the connect to pc screen
can anyone with the newly arrived batch of DVP try to get into the reset screen on boot?

Does anyone know the soft reset key combination?

Sorry, I meant the actual physical key combo. My phone has locked up a couple of times, and I've had to result to removing and replacing the battery.

the reason im asking this is because my 32gb card went corrupted (tried on hd7, also cant get it to work after hard reset), when i put the original 8gb card in, it went into bootloop. the only way i can think of to get it to work is do a hard reset during bootload, which requires a special hardware button combination, but it seems the venue pro is hardware key locked...

This is supposedly the combo:
Hard reset Dell Venue Pro
1. Turn the phone off. If it won’t respond to holding down the Power button, pull the battery from the phone.
2. Press and hold the Camera and Volume Down buttons simultaneously.
3. Press and release the Power button while continuing to hold down Camera and Volume Down.
4. Release the buttons once the format screen appears.
5. Press the Windows button.
6. Press the Windows button again to confirm the hard reset.
The Dell Venue Pro will then go through the process of restoring the phone to its factory default settings.
Make sure you are not releasing the button combo vol down/camera until the format screen appears.

it does not work; just goes to the "connect to pc" screen

i'll second this. i cannot find information on a physical key combo that will let me hard reset the device. mine is stuck in bootloop with or without the microsd installed.
is there any other way to hard reset it? can i connect it via some program? zune won't restore it, i'm willing to try others.

There is NO magic key combination for the DELL. The combination here only will take you to download mode. IF you had a backup on your PC, the DELL would read that backup and restore to previous mode.
Pulling the card has a greater danger than anything else. If you turn your device off and pull the card, without a hard reset, you have the chance to Brick your device. Pulling a card should ONLY be accompanied by a hard reset. Be skeptical of anyone that says pull your card and swap it without a hard reset. They wither got real lucky, which i doubt, or they are using WP7 on an HD2 device. NOT THE SAME THING.
If you have swapped a card NOT using the recommended instructions, you may not be able to restore your device. ALL card swaps, both removal and insertion, should be as part of a hard reset. the TYPE of card does NOT matter. The PROCESS matters. The card type only impacts the storage amount, hangs, freezes, etc. To put your phone in position to change cards, there is only 1 way...
To Remove a SD card from the DELL
>>>>>>>>
1. Hard reset device
2. Before the phone reboots...pre logo's, pull battery and pull card.
3. Put battery back in and start
4. On the Get started screen, run through phone setup.

To insert a new card in a DELL
5. From a Working Dell, repeat steps 1&2.
6. Insert new card
7. repeat 3&4.
8. Your Device should be functional.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Occassionally with a new card, you might get a storage card not working message. I've seen this message several times using 16g cards above class 4. To resolve this:
1. Pray
2. Pull the battery and reset the SD card. DO NOT REPLACE CARD.
3. Insert Battery and restart
4. Pray.
5. Repeat as necessary. I have on a few occassions had to do this 4 times.
If you get this message, and your card is properly seated, STRONGLY consider a new card. The message indicates your device is NOT seeing your card. Change it. MAKE sure you change it using the steps above.
NO SHORTCUTS. If you don't understand these instructions, don't change the card. Be clear. If your device gets bricked, there are very few options available to you.....none that do not involve DELL....that I know of.

THanks a lot!!!

Really about to solve the problem ?
Hi there,
You say there is few options available to get the phone working again and none of that involves Dell Venue pro .... ... can you share this ?

[TUT] how to perform a hardreset!

To perform a HTC HD2 Leo hard reset
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then press the END/POWER button shortly and release it. You will then see a message on the screen telling you this will erase xxxxxxxx......
2. Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
3. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
Soft Reset
If i may add,
A soft reset,
1. Open the back with your thumb or finger
2. The RESET button is located below the bottom left slot for the battery and the SIM card. Use a small object with a blunt point like a toothpick to the RESET button.
3. Your phone will restart and the Home screen appears.
Correct me if im wrong,
Sorry im a newb, but what is the precise difference between hard and soft reset?
Will a soft reset delete stuff such as contacts, pictures and music? And will hard reset do the same?
thanks smaberg...
you should add the two other methods to the first post
there is the soft-reset button (little red button) and a software method (clear storage).

the "software" method (clear storage) is a hardreset, witch means you will restore it to factory default, deleting all info on phone...
the softreset only restarts the phone.
after flashing a new ROM i always recomend a hardreset afterwards, to be sure to get rid of all leftovers...
(Useful if flashing a rom and battery is less than 50%)
Enter bootloader mode:
Momentary press the red reset button on the back of the device, near the sd card slot, while holding the volume down button. Keep pressing on the Volume down till you see the bootloader screen. If you did not have volume down pressed as you were pressing on the reset button the device is just gonna reset and no change will take place.
Else, you will see "serial" written on the bottom middle of the screen if you're not connected to the PC via USB cable yet. "USB" will replace "Serial" when windows recognizes the device. Once on this state, you can press "next" on the rom installer where you have to acknowledge you connected the device via USB and your battery is grater than 50% and so on and so on.
You can start the installer on the PC prior to connecting the device in Bootloader mode. I don´t know what happens if you enter bootloader while connected to the PC (if you don't either, don't do it!!)
Note: I advise against using this mode with less than 10% or so. I guess you could end up with largest screened brick in the market.
To clarify previous posts:
Hard reset: Resets the device to factory defaults or to the last rom you installed.
How?
-Hardware method: combo of hardware buttons (described above)
-Software method: slide through HTC sence till "Settings" bar and select "Security" (top option). Then select "Factory resets" (last option). To my knowledge it does absolutely the same thing as the hardware method. correct me if I'm wrong.
Soft Reset: changes you made will take effect after the device resets (installed apps or reg edits...) OR you got to a sticky situation and you need to reset to get everything running smooth again (device shows abnormal operation of some kind).
How?
-Software method: Hold the power button till the quick list appears and press "power off" option on the top. You can also be presented with this option after installing some apps or after changing something within an app.
-Hardware method: remove the back cover and press the little red button near the sd card slot. Useful if the device stops responding and you are unable to soft reset by any other way.
Enter Bootloader Mode: allows for flashing devices in any battery state. It doesn't do anything by itself, just allows roms to be flashed. Some people have gotten stuck on this screen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=599259, so use the search tool and read up before using. After flashing a rom you will loose every setting and file you had on the device itself. SD card will remain untouched (or so it should). I've read people advising to remove the card prior to flashing. Not exactly sure as to why. Files saved to the SD will remain intact. Apps installed on the SD card (aka. "Storage") will remain intact, only not registered or linked with shortcuts anymore. The device basically doesn´t know they exist.
How?
-Harware method: button combo (described above).
-Software method(ish): If you don't have to manually enter bootloader, the rom installer will take your device through this step without you having to do anything besides connecting through USB (activesynk, I guess) and running the RUU_LEO_xxx.exe file. You will see a progress bar on both PC and device as the rom is flashed.
Note: Reseting the device (turned on) while pressing a key (ex.: vol down) does the same thing as pressing the power button (with the device turned off) while pressing that same button (vol down).
Maybe you could transfer this info to the 1st post and clean up the thread a bit... Even, this could be at the Wiki section. Or better, a link on the Wiki to this thread
Hi guys,
I tried with both volume up and down pressed to hard reset, but not really successful. Perhaps I am doing something wrong?

did u press power while pressing vol up/down?
Well, for entering bootloader mode, you can do it in "software mode" without having a PC connected to your PPC.
You can just run EnterBootloader.exe from your device.

yes, I did. But when pressing I do not feel that is actually "making contact" I tried several times...
I will try with the bootloader from above...let's see...
Thanks and regards,

If, for some reason, you cant hard reset using the power button, you can always press the reset button on the back of the device while pressing both vol up and down. After the vibration, it will enter the hard reset menu (remember to keep pressing both vol buttons till this point).
By the way: were you pressing the power button and both vol buttons with the device turned off? Cuz, with it turned on, you are just cycle through the quick list and vol menu like crazy.
Yep...pressing with phone off.
I tried with the reset button from the back of the phone and it worked.
Thanks guys...

Seba

Hi Domin1992,
as stated above, you have mentioned that you performed a reset - was this a soft reset only with your stylus?
If you are unable to power on your phone at all, then there may be a possibility that you have a hardware issue (could be a problem with the motherboard circuit or battery).
How do you charge your phone? Via the mains adapter, or the USB link?
Try connecting your phone via your external power source using your mains charger or via USB cable and leave it for 2-3 hours and see if it picks up. (also look on device for indication of it receiving power by the lit LED).
If you have a charged battery insert it and power on the phone. If your phone doesn't have a hardware damage it should start. If it powers on (with the phone powered on, regardless of what's been displayed), then try performing a hard reset - especially if you cannot load the Manilla interface then i think you should try doing this. Also note that by performing a hard reset, you will lose all data stored in your phones RAM (this excludes data stored on your MicroSD card)
Regards.
After installation, device was doing reset after I clicked OK when device request me to do it.
When my device didn't want to load windows logo, I take out battery (device don't working without battery during is pluging to external power source) and I used stylus to reset.
I used to charge my device via mains adapter. You know it is USB link plugged to small box which is going to socket.
Today morning I pluged my device to external power source, and want to power on. After 10 minutes there is text.
"The device is unable to boot because either you have tourned off the device incorrectly or tried to install an application from untrusted source. Press Volume Up to rest your device or press your other button to cancel. This operation will delete all your personal data and restore the device to it's factory default settings."
Ok thats great, but i try to press Volume Up and I haven't reaction.
No one button isn't working.
I have to press this button once, 5sec or 10sec?
This is a hard reset. You should pres the button just once.
You should tell us if you can enter the bootloader, you used HSPL or USPL, this way someone could help you.
My opinion is that you should flash again using the card method. But for this to work you should have the HSPL and be able to enter bootloader.
So some more info would be good.
Good luck.
OK..
I have HSPL.
I downloaded bootloader from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=347700
I set all what I should and press ok and than I see "USB port can not open".
I can't find card method for blackstone.
Ok.
It is simple enough.Just folow the next steps:
1. Download a rom that you like.
2. Rename the .nbh file to BLACIMG.nbh.
3. Copy BLACIMG.NBH into the root dir of your Storage Card.
4. Be sure to have at least 30% of charge.
5. Turn off your device by using the Power Button
6. Go to bootloader mode. Push and hold Vol Down + press Power button.
7. As soon as presented the message, push Power button to start flashing or Volume Down button to cancel.
8. The whole procedure will take about 3 minutes. After you finish and see the relative message, soft reset your device, you are ready.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Now I have problem with bootloader mode. I put in micro sd, turn on bootloader mode (poweron with volume down) and than in device I have
"Black100 32M
SPL-1.56.oliNex
MicroP-BlackStone (LED) v6"
on red-green-blue-white background
And for half second device show
"Loading!
No Image file"
Whats wrong?
2 Things:
1) Make sure you called the file BLACIMG
2) Make sure you place the file in the root of your SD card, not a folder.
Everything I did, how you told me. It isn't working still.
OK.. Thank you very much.
My device is working now.
I cant belive i just put in SIM card
And restore device to factory default settings.
Thank you a lot.

[Q]

Alright everyone, I have an NC that I rooted quite awhile ago to great success. However, in my quest for updating to ics, I completely deleted everything. Buttons don't work, and for some reason I can't have it access my computer's hard drive because it won't turn on.
So, if anyone has any ideas for fixing it, it would be much appreciated. All I think I need is the original NC software (everything) and a way to put it on the hdd that I can't access. Thanks in advance.
I think you should be able to make (or re-use) a CWM card and use it to install a fresh rom. Unless it's totally borked, the NC should still boot first from the SD card.
I would, but the only problem is that I cannot even get the device to power on, the buttons don't work.
Edit: Here's the deal, I just need the damned thing to power up for me so I can mount the sdcard and restore it. But whatever utility makes the buttons work, is gone - they aren't just merely broken. So I can press the buttons and the kernel or whatever it is that interacts with the buttons will not understand what is going on because the utility is not there.
If anyone has a solution for either powering it on via usb (with the device off) or getting the buttons to work again, great.
Can anybody access their NC cwm for me and try to find whatever it is that I deleted? It has something to do with buttons or what not.

^ What he said. Sometimes I have to hold the power down for quite a while, or try it several times. This is usually after an SOD (it may help to have it charging too).
Yes and yes. I hold it for quite awhile. Still does nothing.
Have you tried holding down the n button along with the power button?
Hold both for 10 seconds. Release. Hold power button alone for 10 seconds. Sometimes it takes 2 or three cycles of holding down both buttons, then the power.button to get the nook reset.

Just because the screen does not flicker, and you can’t access the file system from your computer using a USB cable, does not mean that the device has not powered on. I can format the whole file system, and the power button will turn it on every time. For turning on the device, the power button is independent of the file system.
It sounds like you have just screwed up the files in the boot partition. I screwed up my device to this point more than a couple times. I had the same none flickering screen, and no file system access from a USB cable. The NC is programmed to boot from a SD card before internal storage, there is really no way that you could have screwed it up to the point that it won’t continue to do that. Below are the steps that I have always taken to get back to a working device,
*fully charge the device, this is very important, because the device might have been on this whole time, and you just could not see it
*Download the stock 1.2 update.zip found HERE, get the “update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip” file
*Now download the file to make a bootable CWM card found HERE
*Follow the directions in that post to make your bootable CWM card, then place the “update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip” file onto that card
*Put the bootable CWM card into your NC
*Hold the power button, and count to 3, then let go
*If after a count to 10, nothing has appeared on the screen, repeat the last step, you most likely just turn the device off.
*This time CWM should load up, select “wipe cache partition,” followed by “wipe cache partition”
*Now scroll down to and select “mounts and storage”
*Now scroll down to and select “format /boot”
*When that has completed, you will then select “install zip from sdcard”
*Then select “choose zip from sdcard,” and select the “update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip” file
*If you receive an error at the very start of the install process, you need to select “toggle script asserts,” to disable script asserts
*When that has completed, remove the card, select reboot the device, and boot the device no SD card in it
Your device should now boot just like stock. At this point you should be back to a completely stock NC.
Report back with any results, good or bad.
Is it necessary to format /system and /data as well if changing between firmware?
Can't try it just yet, but after I'm done traveling it will be top-priority.

Try to reset your phone to factory default using phone buttons and then restore with Zune (or with WP7 Update Cab Sender).
If you can turn off the phone do it. For unresponsive or frozen phone, remove the battery and put it back again after few seconds.
1. Press Volume up button and hold then press Volume Down button and hold and then press the power button (briefly) to switch the phone on.
2. Keep holding the volume up and volume down buttons until you see a reset screen option.
3. Now follow the instructions that will show up on your mobile screen to factory reset your phone.
If it does not help, flash another ROM (official or custom). But you must understand, that all your information on phone will be erased and you would not be able to restore with existing Zune backup!!!

[Q] Dell Venue 8 Pro Recovery corrupt

Due to my own actions (idiot) I deleted the recovery partition to try to regain 9gb it took from me. I would like to reformat and start again but I cannot. I have tried the following dell advice:
these are the steps to reset your tablet:
1. If your device is not turned off already, hold the power button for 10s to power it down.
2. Once it's powered down, press the power button to turn it on.
3. When the Dell logo appears (you may have to do it as soon as the screen turns on instead of wait for the logo to appear), hold the power button again to turn it off.
4. Do this process 3-4 times (they said 4, but it was only 3 for me) until you see something at the bottom saying that it's starting automatic system repair.
5. From there, you should see a menu. Choose "Troubleshoot", and the next menu should ask if you want to reset your PC along with some other options.
6. Choose reset PC, and when you get to the two options that ask "just delete files" or "fully reset PC", choose the second option. From there you should be able to follow the instructions to setup your device.
When I get to restore it asks for system files? I have tried the Dell recovery but that fails as well.
