why is wifi reception better on stock froyo? - Legend General

Something I noticed since using stock froyo is that the wifi reception is significantly better than say.. well, the only other rom I've been using is Cyanogen Mod, whether its the nightlies or RC or official release.. Just curious to know what causes that.
Cheers

Its the drivers for Wifi that are used in Froyo Rom are better.
The one's used in 2.1 were "buggy"

Ohh ok. Yeah, I've always wondered what it was.. I mean if you stick a laptop in my room its got 100% reception no matter where you are in my room where as the Cyanogen Mod has poor to low reception on average and the stock froyo has high to full reception. I mean its a big difference.. do you think they will put the better drivers in Cyanogen Mod?

The drivers in stock sense ROMs are HTC proprietary as far as I know, like the FM radio or flash player implementation. That's why the difference

Best current 2.1 ROM for G1?

Is there a working 2.1 ROM for the G1 which has Live Wallpapers with minimal battery drain and also something close to running at a fast speed with GPS/camera/maps/streetview etc all working?
At the moment I'm using SuperEclair V8.2 by XxKOLOHExX and it's fine and all, but the system slows down to the point of becoming near unusable when Live Wallpapers are on - not to mention the huge battery drain. Are there any ROMs which have such issues corrected?
Thanks in advance~
I'm using superD 1.6. I would change to 2.1 if there was something as fast as 1.6. I have yet to see an eclair rom to match the speed of donut.
It's been a while since I've used a 2.1 rom, but when I did, I didnt notice any battery loss from the live wallpapers. From what I know, live wallpapers doesn't even run when your phone is off/sleeping. LWP's turn back on when your phone comes back on, so it's not constantly running.
edit: That didnt really answer your question =)

Hmm yeah that's true - I don't mind if it's not as fast as donut, just as long as it's not really really slow. The 2.1 ROM I was using had great features but it was just too laggy for me.

+1 for Open Eclair. I used it for my everyday rom for months with no problems. Recently switched back to SuperD out of boredom though.
Ohhh, cool. Looks like Open Eclair is the best way to go. Thanks!
latest open eclair or kingklick's ASOP 2.1 v1.9
Cannon 1.2 with 3d patch 2.0 is fully of fc.
SuperEclair v2.4 or v3.0 I suggest v2.4 with Extended Pack.
Kolehe beta 3.0 Rom. I bet theres no Eclair rom faster. flash and see for yourself. But no LWP's though. And you shouldnt be asking for a fast eclair that has minimal battery drain and complain about something slowing down and your using LWP's.
OpenEclair 1.3.0.1 is very feature-complete, stable and the "no 3D" version is fast enough for daily use. The 3D version though is slow. I've missed several phone calls because it takes that long for the phone to wake up and show caller ID.
The OpenEclair devs are promising improvements on that front in the upcoming 2.0 version, so I'd try that out when it becomes available.

is there anything that does not work yet in OpenEclair, such as video capture, camera, SMS, etc?
I have an original MT3G (using Cyanogen right now) if that makes any difference.
Sorry because of the extremely late reply man :S but...
I think you DEFINITELY have to try this ROM if you wanna know what's speed and reliability. It's based off the official aosp ota for the mt3g (my touch 3g) and tweaked out to run flawlessly on the G1

I can't wait for someone to reply to this thread in six months time and be all 'Dude, you gotta check out this honeycomb ROM, it runs amazing on the G1!!' and everyone else will be all 'lulwut?'.
Have had Super-E, but changed to BiffMod.
BiffMod is faster on my G1.
Greetings
Braaaaiiiiiings.... mmmmm... BRAIIIINS!!!
The one I have now is blazing fast, I use from cm4 to cm6 and this thing maybe best so far I have use, no fc and bs since I got it, fancy looks but still maintain good speed. But not sure about juice, my battery is extended one like 3.7 VDC 3000m monster battery so it still last me good 10hr+ even everything is on......
Waiting for good sense mod. ;-)

2.2 Roms, which one? Should I even bother?

So my question is which 2.2 ROM should I choose to update my Epic4g
I already running a 2.1 based rom from ACS (Syndicate ROM).
Flash is the only upside I'm am seeing atm. For some reason Im doubting ill see any day by day performance increases. or am I wrong?
Tried stock 2.2 but ended up going back to stock 2.1. Flash support in browser, bluetooth voice dialing, etc. are useful but don't make up for losing MobileAP support which currently works only in 2.1. Some of the other enhancements in 2.2 don't really add to the experience or workflow such as preview windows in browser. I prefer the simplicity and workflow of 2.1. Also, after a few days of using 2.2 GPS stopped locking on no matter what I tried including toggling airplane mode and the only way to restore GPS was to power cycle. GPS on 2.1, on the other hand, has been stable so far.
If your looking for stability and battery life stay away from the un-official 2.2 for now..
These are based on a slightly flaky release.
Don't get me wrong I have loaded most all of them out of curiosity BUT...
Froyo is still sadly not ready for prime time.

I would have to disagree here. When the first froyo leaks came out I would areee that it was not ready. Now there are some good ones that are stable and have good battery life. I like nebula and bonsai the best. I would say give it a shot and if you don't like it go abck to 2.1. Flash runs choppy for me though.

Viperrom is what i've been running. I have flashed every dk28 rom and nothing compares, besides thomas and rodderick are awesome with support.
I have tried all 2.2 roms and mammons bonsi4all is now my primary rom... quickest for me. Battery life although is not as good as syndicate rom was on 2.1 with xtreme kernal... but I use flash so its worth it for me.

O boy, maybe ill just wait for andriod 2.3, i dont want to revert back to a rom with bad battery life. Plus, there isnt to many quality 2.2 themes.
Hopefully ACS can release another rom like syndicate or cyannogen mod will be ready soon.

I'm running Bonsai and the WirelessTether works fine. But I guess you want to use it with multiple devices at once?
Which other roms have you tried??
I loved syndicate rom but they don't offer 2.2 version
Tried viper and epic experience.
How would you compare it to the quantum rom.

I'm really enjoying the latest update of Epic Experience. It feels really snappy, and the battery life is stellar. I've also had no trouble with GPS or tethering. The browser just has a strange loading animation. Other than that, it's awesome.

different radios

I have been flashing my Fasc. since I got it and like the phone. My only gripe like most is the lack of radio performace. I was running the EC09 with the 4.1 nameless and had the best radio yet. Does anyone know if I can use EC09 with a stock Froyo 2.2 (ED01) built? thanks
Doc
I am running the EC09 radio with Comm Rom 2.1, which is based on the EDO1 build, and it has been working fine. If you try it with stock, I would suggest having the files to go back to another radio ready in case it doesn't work.
Yes it can, I am using it right now with Stock Froyo.

Did you notice if your time-without-signal metric got way better once EC09 radio was installed? I'm seeing a huge improvement in time-without-signal on the full GB leak, but I'm curious if that improvement comes from the radio, or just the base GB software reporting / measuring.

It got slightly better. I don't get a good signal at my house anyway, but it is better on EC09 than it was on ED04. I did see my data speeds increase slightly as well.
I read that Samsung Cortex A8 is packaged with the Qualcom Digital Baseband QSC6270 this is supposed to be the same baseband in the droidx but the author was saying that the recption was far superior with the droid typically -86dbm whereas with the fascinate could be 10 or more dbm less(meaning worst). I have noticed a significant increase in reception when other parts of the chip are enabled also, such as GPS and bluetooth.

Best Kernel's for G2?

Currently using CM7 nightly build 186 with stock kernel. Had umaros kernel but it gave me issues so I reinstalled 186 and restored apps with data using TB pro. Looking for an efficient kernel which gives good battery life and excellent performance/ doesn't make my phone overheat :/
So you're saying that you're having bad performance, battery, and heat problems with the stock CM7 kernel? That doesn't sound right. I think you may be having some other issues. What are you overclocking to? are you using the built in CMSettings CPU settings or a different app (SetCPU)? What governor are you using?
I would definitely recommend the stock CM7 kernel. Its a fantastic well rounded kernel that is guaranteed to work perfect with the software.
I agree - you should really use the CM7 kernel it works quiet brilliant.
IMHO all other kernels are not especially made for CM7...
I'm running Pershoots kernel with CM7 and I have it overclocked to 1.5 Ghz. My phone runs great and I'd say the battery lasts pretty much the same amount as it did when I was on stock. Of course when your gaming and stuff and actually using all those gigahertz then your battery life goes down the crapper.
Interestingly enough ... I haven't noticed the phone getting as hot as it used to when I did play games on it ... weird. You'd think overclocking it would cause it to warm it considerably.
yea I'm curious too. I'm running the stock OTA 2.3.4 pre rooted rom and everything works great, but I was wondering if I can improve wifi range or anything else?

No custom kernels for that. And if you were on a different ROM, custom kernels will help with battery or performance (they claim), but not really things like wifi signal.
Yea just had a scary moment when I flashed my radio lol. I know there is no working substitute kernal for the stock ota ...yet! But I was wondering what about g-lite, ayone try it? How close is it to the stock ota?

CM7 and G-lite are pretty close. Considering that the G2 OTA is close to stock AOSP, and these ROMs are made from AOSP they're going to be pretty close...
Why not flash them and try them? You can always go back to a nandroid backup of your stock rooted ROM.
I said that the stock kernel is good, the UmarosKernel drained my battery.

My Conclusions - U8800-51, Stick With Froyo

I know infinitely more about Linux than I will ever really understand about Android due to the proprietary nature of Android hardware.
Having said that, I have tried both Gingerbread and ICS modifications to my U8800-51 and have come to the conclusion that this device was manufactured for Froyo and works best on Froyo. Signal strength is better, WiFi reception is better and music sound quality is far superior.
In downgrading I gave up a few applications that required GB or better. Nothing critical.
Since I am retired, I have had the time to play around. The best solution (for me) is achieved with AWD launcher. I am also using the ICS keyboard app. Your mileage may vary.
