WIFI Call quality sucks - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that the call quality when I'm wifi sucks. Its all static and cuts in and out. I get better calls on 1 bar than on full wifi signal. I'm running the ice rom and have the settings set to "wifi preferred". I really need to use it just wish it worked well. Any ideas on why it wouldn't work well?

I'm using the stock ROM and my wifi is equally bad. Must not be a ROM specific issue.

I'm having a similar issue. When I initiate a call, the first 10-15 seconds are extremely garbled and suffer from severe buffering, almost like I'm watching a youtube video with a really weak internet connection. Once those first 15 seconds pass, everything seems pretty much normal, but of course there's a good chance that the call doesn't get that far because the person on the other end can't hear me, and I can't hear them.
I'm on the stock ROM. I've tried three factory resets, and each time, that has restored completely normal functionality, but after a day or so, the garbled audio problem returns. I initially thought it was being driven by a conflict with recently installed applications, but I've removed them all and still have had no luck.
Anyone else have any idea what's going on here? Thanks!

on stock rom and use the wifi calling when ever i'm home. sounds fine, no lag issues and no dropped calls. Like the wifi more then cell network. may be the wifi network?

I'm on a stock ROM and have zero issues over WiFi. I get very poor signal in my house (just fine outside...) and have had no issues or quality problems via my WiFi.

All,
For those of you experiencing this problem, particularly one that exhibits itself in the way I described in my previous post: do you have the app Watchdog installed? On a whim, I uninstalled that this afternoon, and now my WiFi calls are no longer all jumbled, laggy and compressed at the start of a call, as they were even this morning. The only change I have made to the phone since this morning was the removal of Watchdog. I haven't even rebooted the device. I know that my WiFi connection was strong in both instances, so I don't believe that was the issue.
So, try uninstalling Watchdog, if you have it. I'm curious to see if this helps anyone else!

Strange phone issues with Samsung Galaxy S

Hi,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S about a month ago, and have been having odd problems with it since the off. Has anyone else had these sort of symptoms:
1. I occasionally lose my data connection - the icon disappears from the top of the screen and whilst I can still make and recieve calls and text messages, I cannot download anything in any app. The only way I've found to get my data connection back is to reset the phone. This happens maybe a couple of times a week.
2. My WiFi seems to suffer from a similar problem. I can be browsing the web on Wifi, then suddenly I'll not be able to download anything anymore. The wifi icon is still visible, but I'll basically be unable to download anything until I switch the wifi off and back on again. Then, it starts working as normal again.
In both these above scenarios, I think I've narrowed it down to primarily happening after I use the Android Market, but it's difficult to tell as it's very intermittent.
3. A couple of times since getting the phone, I've been unable to make or receive any calls. Even switching the phone off and back on didn't help - my signal bar was showing I had a signal and my data connection was still active. Couldn't tell if this was a network problem or not though as there weren't any people nearby on the same network as me. After a while, it started working normally again.
4. The email client randomly lost all of my email settings. One day I was receiving all my emails, the next day I had no email accounts set up at all.
5. I installed Sensor Dump and Phone Explorer to see what data was coming in from the sensors, and have noticed that the light sensor never sends any data. Is this normal?
I also have the usual slow-down issues, etc, but the above have got me stumped as I can't find anyone else reporting the same issues. When I first got the phone, I went crazy installing a load of Android apps, so initially I blamed the software I'd installed. After a reset and being a bit more selective with the apps I install and use, I'm still getting the same issues. I just can't pin down whether this is a faulty phone that I should return, or if there are software issues either relating to the way I'm using the phone or just with bugs in the firmware.
Has anyone else had anything like the above happen with their Galaxy S?
Thanks,
Chris.
I've experienced no.2 several times, wifi just stopping all data traffic. Not found out what causes it though.
As for the other problems, I haven't experienced any of those. Do you use automatic brightness on the display? If not, problem no. 5 might be caused by the sensor being turned off.
thanks for the reply - at least I'm not completely alone!
I have the automatic brightness turned on - which is why it seems odd. To be honest, I've never actually see the auto brightness do anything. It always seems to be the same brightness to me.
Cheers,
Chris.

I think it might be normal that older mails disappear from the inbox after some time? My problem was that everything went. I had three email accounts set up, all downloading emails every hour. Then, one day I went into the email app and there were no accounts at all! I had to set it all up from scratch again.
I hear there are better email apps available for Android, so I'll probably switch to one of those soon.

Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S on Orange UK in July. I'm having the same problem as 1. quite consistenly now.
I thought it might be related to the green power battery saver app I had installed, but i've removed this and still having the problem.
I'm using the phone in several central London locations so I think it's unlikely to be a problem with the data network.
Any suggestion would be welcome since I'm often without data.
Thanks
Nik
ive 1 and 3 but very rarely so far
rebooting fixes it for me
running froyo jp3
for email i use K9, it's almost the same as the integrated mail, only much better (PUSH imap)

I'm actually getting this happen a lot now. It seems to be getting worse, which makes me think it might be a hardware fault. I generally lose my data connection once or twice a day minimum, but some days the phone is virtually unusable.
I have found that it's more likely to happen after using Wi-Fi, so my other thought is that when coming out of Wireless mode, the phone may not switch the normal 3G/HSDPA data connection back on. Most of the time I can fix this by putting the phone into flight mode and then back out, but sometimes it needs a complete reset.
The other problem I've noted with the data connection is that sometimes it seems to rapidly switch between HSDPA and 3G - the data icon at the top of the screen keeps going from '3G' to 'H' then back again. I guess it has something to do with signal quality but it only seems to happen when the phone is showing a good signal strength (four bars). The problem I've found when this happens is that it virtually locks up any ongoing data transfers, making it impossible to download a webpage or check my emails. Strangely the only way I've really found to stop this happening is to move somewhere where my signal strength is weaker, such as indoors, which then seems to make the phone stop attempting to use HSDPA. I can't find a way to switch off HSDPA from within the phone's settings while leaving 3G on.
I really am now finding that using this phone is an increasingly frustrating experience. I've found even more weird faults, such as sometimes my text conversations show the wrong people's names up against them, and then my replies go to the wrong people. It's like an insane, shiny mess of a phone!

I am indeed experiencing same problems above..it just drive me crazy with a need of complete reset everyday..
turning on n off flight mode won't change anything..
I really hope someone can bring a miracle to solve this problem..
I'm on XXJPC
setting the APN parameter(Setting-->Wireless and network-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names-->New APN) to 2G only seems to solve the 'lost data connection' problem..
I am connected 24/7 now..
Give a try guys!

My 3G constantly shuts off

I got the DX the day it came out and really like the phone(minus the BS bootloader), but I've been having an issue with my 3G shutting off while I'm listening to the app RadioTime. I listen to ESPN radio every morning on my way to work and, but ever since I got the DX it cuts out every 5 - 10 min and I have to hit pause then play to get it running again. I know for a fact that it's not an issue with the app or even location because I've gone the same route using the same app with the Incredible and Droid1 before that with no issues. I've tried everything I can think of, such as leaving the screen on and changing the battery profile, but nothing works. I know others have experienced this problem, and it is so annoying, it's making me second guess keeping this phone.
Make sure Background Data is enabled and that the data sever shuts off during peak hours.
That's all I got. Sorry.
I second that, cypher. It fixed my 3G problem. Mine was doing the same thing with Pandora and I finally realized a week later that Background Data was the culprit. Now, if I knew how to fix the wifi.
Yes this is happening to me also. It kinda sucks, my GF with an ERIS gets perfect signal where I do not. Bummer.
My background data is enabled and I'm using the Performance setting on the battery manager.
Maybe try turning off the WIFI ?
I've noticed the same thing when using pandora. In fact my phone gets hot when this happens. It is always in a low signal strength environment. eventually it will return, but it takes a while.

[Q] my G2 loses service, restart brings it back

hey everyone
so my G2, which I absolutely love, has been having a problem lately. in the first week it happened maybe once and i didn't think much of it, but since Friday it's happened like 8 times now. I'll be sitting there with my G2 and all the sudden I have no service whatsoever. Just an x on the signal strength indicator. 1 or 2 times it has come back after a minute or two, but the other times I had to turn the phone off and back on. the weird part is I'm not moving at all, totally sitting still, but when it comes back on I have FULL bars with HSPA+. so it's not like I walked into an area that didn't get good reception.
any idea what's going on? i looked around but didn't see other people having this issue. any ideas?
thanks
alright well at least i'm not alone. i remember that rumored OTA update was supposed to have some radio bugfixes. maybe when the real OTA update comes it will have something to fix this. i hope so.
I have been trying to diagnose this issue on my phone too.
By any chance, do either of you have your BT on at the time?
Happens to mine as described and I have never turned on bluetooth. However this would also happen to my G1 so I think its a network thing personally.
Yeah, it definitely is. I have 2 areas that it happens in, both are while I am in my car and I have BT on in my car. When I ran it without BT, did not happen.
I have found that when I am in those area's, turning off 3G stops it entirely, even with BT on, so when in my car, I set edge and still use my BT and problem is gone.
I hope this is temporary and an OTA can fix the handoff from 3G to Edge and back better so that I can stop this, but this works well enough.
Mine has done that also, maybe once a week for the past 3 weeks.
Judging by the other problems you can have Id say this one isnt that bad. Especially if it only happens once a week haha. This is the only problem I have with my phone.
no bluetooth...
no no bluetooth on, i never do actually... but also my G1 never did this, which makes me think it's NOT a network thing, but I don't know.
also I'm sure this is just coincidence but it almost always happens when my girlfriend is nearby with her T-Mobile Blackberry Curve. i know it wouldn't make any sense, but she's sitting there on the same network with full service and all the sudden my G2 loses service completely, right next to her... although it's not always while she's there, but like the majority of the times she's been there.
I just started another post to check on something, I have widgets that show me when I am connected to 3G and when I am connected to H. I have noticed that the phone is activity managing that connection. In other word, it is in 3G until data is transfered then it goes to H. I wonder if when we are in areas of "questionable" HSDPA signal if this hand off is causing the problems.
I have seen a lot of op's say that there problems come right after some data activity?
Just a guess a this point
i saw someone mention in another post that it happens after/during a text message alot of times. i haven't noticed that myself, but that's something to think about too.

What I've heard is that the phone will stay in 3G mode until you begin using data in order to save battery life. Makes sense to me.

[Q] Unable to make a call and several FC's?

I;m sorry if this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find an answer for it. I have an Epic and it works great except for minor problems usually resolved by looking through the forums. Although my dad has the exact same phone and I put whatever Rom I am currently using on his phone so that he can have a fantastic phone. He has had Frozen 1.1, 1.2 and Randomrom 2.2. They have all been istalled with Journaling on. The rom will work fine but then out of nowhere he will have FC's and will not be able to make phone calls but can still receive them. Any idea what is going on? We have the same phone, modem and rom but he seems to have problems. The only difference I can figure out is that he lives in an area that has NO signal for any carrier and so his phone is constantly switching back and forth from Sprint and roaming which of course drains his battery like crazy. Could that cause the phone to wig out on him no matter which software he is running. Thanks for any help provided.
Do you have an airave? If not Odin back to stock to see if it works then root and flash again.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
They do not use an airwave and I have done several odin's and reflashed and still the same problem. I've tried to see if he is doing something before it happens to slueth it out but he it seems to happen at random times. It use to be just tons of FC's but figured it was due to haing journaling off so I fixed that but now he has less FC's sometimes but now with the unable to mae outgoing calls problem. I'm just frustrated because I try to help my family with their smartphones and they have nothing but problems with them but me, the one who actually plays on his phone too much, never has any seriuos problems.
It may just be the No signal area. If there is no signal it can't dial out. If there is no signal for any carrier then you can't even try Roam Control.

Network issues (Data)

I'm experiencing issues with the network, I often have to go to plane mode then disable it to get my connection back (I always have the 4G logo on screen, but internet pages won't load, facebook either, well everything) I'm seeing posts about the WiFi issue, but nothing about this, am I the only one experiencing this ? It occurs every 5 minutes or so, pretty annoying when you are in the middle of a youtube video or so..)
Thank you in advance !
I could say I have the same issue.
I realize this post is 2 months old but I also have this exact same problem. Data on WiFi works perfectly fine. On actual mobile data though it works great for a long period of time (hours - days) then suddenly gets horrible. Disabling and re-enabling data seems to fix it most of the time, then it works great again for a good while.
Would this indicate a software glitch? I've been wondering if I should try some custom ROMs. Or would it be a problem with the physical antenna or data module in the phone?
I'm on the verge of sending it back under warranty but if it's software maybe something else can be done to fix.
