How to backup contacts to Google that are saved to the phone? - Epic 4G General

Soo... whenever I added contacts to my phone, I always saved them to "phone" and not go Google. But, I really want to start customizing/rooting/and play around with installing custom roms on my phone, but in the mean time... I don't want to lose any of my contacts.
Now, when I realize that if I had saved them all to my Gmail account on the phone..I could always just sign in and retrieve them once I've wiped my phone. However, I didn't save them to Gmail...they're just saved onto the phone.
Does anyone have any advice to me as to how to move ALL my contacts from my phone to my Gmail account? Thus, being able to retrieve them (or in other words...have a safe place where they're Backed Up)?
Thanks!

Not sure how to do what you are asking and I would like to know as well. one thing you can do is export them to the memory card. Then import them when change roms.

I just did this not too long ago. Go to contacts and hit menu. Then export to sd card. Then hit menu and import to gmail. Tell me if this helps.

Bingo! thank you.
(You go to Contacts...hit "MENU" , then "MORE", click "IMPORT/EXPORT" click "EXPORT TO SD CARD" then ok. It'll then back up your contacts on your SD card.
then...
go to Contacts, hit "MENU", select "IMPORT/EXPORT", select "IMPORT FROM SD CARD", then it'll give you the option of "PHONE" or "[email protected]". Select your gmail account, then click IMPORT. and viola!"
Thank you!!

duplicates
did this proceess delete thge orignaal contacts or generate duplicate entries (one on pho e and the other in gmail)m

yea there are a lot of issues with contacts and their facebook photos being updated after you export them to your sd card...

It automatically does this for you. When you flash a rom you just sign into the market and all your contacts will then dl onto your phone.

Backup Assistant on Redemptive Revolution

First off I am a total newb so please excuse me for being stupid.
I just rooted my phone with the help of a friend (my phone was force closing everything), we used titanium backup and installed the new rom.
The problem is that I do not have contacts in the new rom. I restored using the backup file and the contacts are still not listed in people. Everyone is there when I open up 'phone' and I can type in and call people as if they are a contact, but they arent in listed in 'people' The phone still has all the same problems in the original restore so I would definitely like to use the new rom.
can I used backup assistant to get my contacts on the new rom? How do I do it?
Thanks.
First thing I would go to is the people icon, select menu, then view. See if the folder that has contacts listed is checked off.
There should be no reason you can see the contacts when you use PHONE but not people.
The other thing you should do is have all your contacts sync'd with Google. When you flash a ROM, you should Backup existing and wipe all. You will then need to re-setup all your settings/Email accounts. If you use Titanuim, you should use it to install apps only, not data as well.
If you have all your contacts as Google contacts, when you re-set up your GMAIL, it will automatically re-load your contacts.

What Rom are you running? If you are on Redemptive like the OP stated they were, after you flash the Rom (2.1.2 or 2.1.3), there will be a folder on your SD Card named Redemptive. In that folder is a flashable zip for BU Assistant.
As I stated in my previous post, Syncing with Google it the easiest way to do this. I do not have anybody saved under PHONE contacts, they are all Google or Exchange Active Sync.

yeah. I found it. i dont like syncing with Google though
Backup Assistant created issues for me though because I would be getting 3 or 4 duplicate entries for the same person. Even though you can link the entries together which is very convenient, if you have to edit one you would get a choice of editing the home number under google and sometime 2 or 3 copies of the other number listed under "phone". What I would do is export a copy of the contacts to the SD card as a csv file, and then import them again immediately under the "google" option. That way everything you have is all under one label.

How to save contacts to Google?

for some reason they keep saving to T-mobile. not google......
help please?
I'd like to know this as well, stupid T-Mobile. Why do we need our contacts backed up on your servers when Google does it for us.
This should have been posted in General but there is setting under add contact, at the top it says tmobile, right under the name, click he arrow next to it and choose google instead of tmobile and that will fix it. You will have to do it each time though!

While you are on the main page for contacts hit the menu button press more and it will give you a long list of all the contacts. Also if from the home screen you click menu/ settings/ accounts & sync and click on google you can tell it to sync with your contacts. Do this again for Tmobile and you can tell it not to.

True but irrelevant.

The problem is that contacts are tied to EITHER T-Mobile or Google and T-Mobile is the default. All those contacts that were on my SIM card? They all went to T-Mobile. Maybe there is a way to move things around (and en mass), I hope so. Anyone?
I've found this while googling...works for me.
From People - Menu - View. Check Phone and uncheck Google. Then Export to SD card. This creates a vcf file of all the phone contacts.
Go back to View and uncheck Phone and check Google. Then Import from SD card. This imports the vcf file back in under Google.
You may have some duplicates if contacts were in both places. You can simply delete them. You should then be able to sync with GMail.
Once this is done, you should be able to also go back to Menu - View and reverse the check marks again and delete all the entries under Phone since they're now under Google too. Then uncheck Phone and recheck Google, so going forward you're only dealing w/Google contacts.
If you run into problems, you still have the vcf file on your SD card if you need to re-import.

synced contacts #s disappear when going to new ROM (Only contact emails re-sync)

I have been trying to get my roomates Fascinate on a custom rom+kernel but for some reason whenever the first boot of a new rom syncs, all of the contact names appear but with no phone #'s. Every name has the G next to it (Gmail) but none of the names actually have an email assigned to them...Any idea how to get the phone #s back? or what in the world is going on.
Also I did make sure all of the "what to sync" boxes were checked when originally backed up.
Thanks for your help!

Fascinate - on Zinc ROM + Voodoo
This probably won't help you now but in the future you can just export your contacts directly to your sdcard and not have to worry about them syncing or not. Just go to contacts press the menu button, select more select export/import then press export to sd card.
Do this once and you'll always have a backup handy that will never be effected by wipes/restores and doesn't need to be synced, just imported via the same method as above but selecting import from sd card instead of export to sd card.

Wow it's that simple haha, thanks for the tip I wont make the same mistake again. Now if I can only find the current lost numbers I will be in business.

Syncing contacts with Google

Hi all, I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere.
Basically, I want to be able to sync my current phone/SIM card contacts with Google.
Every time I create a new contact on the phone it gives me the option to save it to either the phone, the SIM card, or Google. I always choose Google since I want to be able to access them on the cloud some time in case I ever switch phones or brick it.
My question is, I have quite a few contacts already on the phone and on the SIM card that aren't saved on the cloud. Is there any way at all I can do a complete sync so I can put all my phone/SIM card contacts onto Google the same way adding a new contact sends them there?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
There is a workaround: You can save all your contacts as a vcf by going to contacts, options, "Import/Export", "Export to SD card". Then select Import/Export again, and Import from the SD card to your google account.
From here (I'm a new user so can't make the link live, sorry): code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4236
Also same solution listed here: google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=30a6a99f562bbb28
I don't know how to get Google's attention to fix this.
Wow, that worked perfectly, thank you.
Slightly inconvenient that now I have doubles of every contact, but I simply went to my settings and checked only the "show google contacts" option and unchecked the SIM and Phone options.
Would you happen to know if there's another way to make the duplicates go away?

Ha, I guess I could do that. Though I'm not 100% sure about moving all to the cloud. There's always the possibility that my phone could break and I not have any money to get a backup smartphone right away. It'd be convenient to at least keep some contacts on my SIM card just in case I have to switch over to a dumbphone at some point.
Thank you though.
You can delete and merge dups with "Contact Analyzer 2" from the Market. Feel free to hit "thanks" if you appreciate my pointers!

google sync issues

my phone has stopped syncing from phone> gmail (at least as far as contacts go) gmail>phone works fine. if i change a last name, add a phone number to a contact on the phone it does not update the contact list in gmail. in fact gmail will override the changes on the phone and put it back the way it was. is there a setting somewhere where the 2 actually sync?

stupid samsung... i'm trying to flash a rom and i'm afraid i'm gonna lose numbers now
Well.... how are you saving contacts on your device? When you create a new contact on the device, are you selecting Google or Phone?
If you select Phone, then it won't sync over to Google because the contacts are locally saved.
If you select Google, then everything is saved on their servers and then replicated to your device.

To export your contacts on your phone, the breadcrumbs are: Contacts > Menu key > Import/Export > Export to SD card.
After that you can import those directly into Google contacts on the webpage.
If you don't want to use Google, then just import that export file into contacts on your device after your flash.
You could use a backup application like Titanium Backup or MyBackup Root.

Under contacts hit menu and export contacts to sd card. You can also export them to your gmail. Then always choose google as a save option when adding phone numbers.
Do you BONSAI?
