Hi , I created an XDA account a-while ago , but forgot I made it . So i'm now jumping back to this site , maybe going to try and be a active site member .
Anyways ..
Is a Gingerbread port in the works for the Samsung Epic ?
Not trying to be rude , but I noticed the Epic community is lacking [Edit :read below why .] The Epic Community is less active in almost every Android site I could find . In development , users , & even questions . It might just be , i'm coming from a Pre , so maybe i'm used to a whole site dedicated to 2 phones . But i'm in no-way downing the Epic or the community , I love both of them . That's just what i've noticed .
I'm a very tech-savy person , but know nothing about porting one thing to another . But I read on AC that Gingerbread was being ported to other Galaxy S devices , so why not us ? Is it bc of the FFC ? Keyboard ? I'm curious .
Do we need Froyo before we can get Gingerbread ported over ? I have a feeling once we get Froyo/Gingerbread the community will explode into a confetti of awesomeness .
Thank you guys .
Also , if this is posted in the wrong section , or has already ben asked [ Yes , I searched before posting ] please delete or move this thread . xD
It's a little more complicated than that. Our phone isn't as similar to the Nexus as, say, the Captivate. There's a whole host of differences. Keyboard isn't a problem, it's built into the OS. But, there's WiMax, CDMA, and EvDo, which makes it not so easy to backport a kernel. But, when we have a newer kernel from Sammy, we'll be able to just compile that into Gingerbread.
Also remember, only one carrier provides the epic. The other phones don't have front facing cameras or wimax to deal with. personally I think our devs over here are doin a great job.

I wasn't trying to down the developers in any way . I worded that wrong , I tend to be bad when it comes to stuff like that . I think they're doing great too , but i'm saying .. I see on AC , all these other phones getting Gingerbread ported . Some still getting Froyo ported . But I haven't really seen any discussion about that here .

Hmm , thank you for bringing that to my attention . I sometimes forget how much the Epic differs from the rest of the Galaxy line . & does Samsung release kernels regularly ? Or am I missing something ? I'm not good with words , lol . How long do you estimate until Samsung gives us a new kernel ?
xD I'm sorry for being such a pain guys .

That's one of the few things Samsung beats HTC at every time. They release the source is a very timely manner instead of holding back.

Look , I wasn't trying to be rude . That's why I put that in the OP . I'm not impatient , I just wanted to know what was going on , because I couldn't find anything . I can't imagine how much work it takes to develop all this stuff .

I clearly stated in my post that I had no clue what goes into developing software . Like I said , I didn't mean to word it like that , I was simply asking a question . Not downing the community . Everyones so quick to criminalize someone without understanding what the OP is saying . Not trying to be rude , but I said twice in my OP that I wasn't trying to down anyone , but you make it sound like I was complaining or something .

Here's the deal for everybody wondering, and all you tech savy people out there, you know who you are. The gsm galaxy s variants, and the fascinate, all use bml as there dev blocks. The deal with the epic is, we use stl for system, data, and cache not bml. The nexus s kernel the other variants use on there port doesn't natively support stl dev blocks, we have to work that into the kernel itself through .configs and what not, which we have not yet achieved. That's if we were storing the port inside the phone itself on the OneNand, which also isn't natively supported, however, I'm working on the port now, which completly ditches the pevious idea and fools the kernel to set all the mount points on the externel sd card in a folder with subfolders of sys, data, and cache, so we don't have to worry about any other factors than if the sd card is formatted ext4, required by gingerbread. Once we get the port booting off the sd card then we stil have a whole bunch of problems preventing us from having a "functional" port, including keyboard drivers, cdma radio support, wifi, and even mms. In other words, we are being burrdened by a completly diffrent spectrum of hardware in our phone. Gsm != Cdma people. (;

You know you only got fro-yo because it came pre-installed. NONE of the Galaxy S phones in the USA got OFFICIAL fro-yo.
I'll say gingerbread will roll out when honeycomb is released.
Important is ext4 AND RAW GB
It looks like Samsung finally figured out Android for SGS (JPY is very smooth), which should probably mean that next updates for Galaxy Tab (2.2.1, 2.3 or even 3.0) will be pretty good (fingers crossed anyways....).
I don't think a 2.3 port from Nexus S is too important (it would probably require a lot of work, and it doesn't look like the development section of the GT is all that active compared to for instance SGS) - unless the 2.3 upgrade drags out for ever.
Theres a team of devs working on a port over in the SGS forums and i believe one of the sgtab devs has joined in the work they are doing.
As far as an official release is concerned i believe we would be looking inyo 2nd quarter of 2011 before anything comes through. Still waiting for a 2.2.1 update as my sgs flies now on JPY

Not sure I understand what 'RAW GB' is. Maybe you mean Gingerbread? If so, wait for it to be made specifically for the Tab.

I think that's the point... When Samsung does one specially for the Tab it'll be full of Samsung crapware... A naked Android version would be really nice.
Then compile one from the AOSP Source and dont wait for the devs to do the work! U need to try and error, thats how development works! Dont be lazy and wait for a dev to do it, simply read some articles or guides how to compile from a source, and then get going! Thats what im doing!
Ext4 is the new file system used on tge nexus that makes it blazing fast

Flash Koush's recovery, it's called gingerbread recovery for a reason (as stared in the tread), it converts the important partitions to ext4 from RFS.
You could also start helping get AOSP code working for the Tab too, which is kinda necessary before you just compile it. None of these things are easy, the more people we have contributing to the cause, the less time it will take. The more people just ask for it the more clutter we have in the forums + time answering these questions the longer it takes to do anything.
Yes I know technically you asked if there was any chance, simple answer- I doubt any dev will port a Nexus S ROM, it would be just as easy/hard to build up AOSP to work on it. Porting Nesus S to say, the Galaxy S is quite a bit easier (and that's no small feat!) due to similar screen resolution, etc. Also the number of people willing and eager to do the hard work on say the i900 is maybe 5-10x the number of people working on anything aftermarket on the tab.
So, grab you Tab, read up on android, find an area you're good at and enjoy doing, AND LETS GET HACKING and stop asking!
It's much fun more fun learning something new apposed to following some instructions, trust me.
Great post, btw i am planning on working with this right now if there is a group of people also working on this could you please point me in the right direction so i may be of assistance

I'm no longer working on this. I've tried, failed, and moved on. It seems that some other folks have had some success. Maybe they will continue on. Between work, family, college, etc. it's obvious that I'm getting nothing done on this.
This is an attempt at taking the work being done for the heroc here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=911828 and porting it to the Eris.
Honestly, I know enough to be dangerous and that's about it. The HeroC (sobe and those thanked in the post linked to above) folks and those upstream from there are doing most of the work. So, thank you to them.
If anyone would like to help, please do. That's the main reason that I'm posting this now. The kernel doesn't even compile at this point, much less boot. (It's hard to boot something that doesn't exist. )
Source: https://github.com/gnarlyc/cm-kernel
So far, here's what I've done.
1) forked sobe's repo
2) copied the heroc board files, renamed the copies to *desirec*, and changed all instances of HEROC to DESIREC and heroc to desirec inside the files
3) started removing heroc touchscreen stuff and adding desirec touchscreen stuff
Why am I doing this?
1) learn more about kernels
2) use some that programming knowledge that I'm supposedly learning in class
3) get an updated kernel for the Eris
very nice, i do wish you luck.
Very good. Glad to see you working on this.

Any work still going on n with this?
This is what we would need to port over the new Hero Sensable Gingerbread right? Man if we could get this working, I would be about the happiest guy in the world
My final exam is on Wednesday of next week. So, I can promise that I will put much more effort into after that. I can't promise to get it working, but I'll definitely put a lot more time in. As I said before, if anyone wants to jump in and help, feel free. There's already one other person (breber) helping, but I think he's been in the same boat as me. So... Hopefully, he'll be able to help more after classes are over too.
Kernel updates are pretty much the only updates I ever care about.
Just an update. This hasn't been worked on as much as I hoped. However, I've had help from breber. Actually, he's made much more progress than I did. The kernel not only compiles, but it boots too! As soon as we can get the touchscreen working, it might even be usable.
Here's the current source.
https://github.com/breber/cm-kernel
If anyone else wants to take a stab at it, feel free. Our time is somewhat limited.
I've played around with adding the capella 3602 stuff back in, but it didn't seem to help with the touchscreen issue. The TS is one of the few components that are different between the HeroC and Eris.

So your moving on from this?
Where I currently stand on the Huawei U8800:
So, I first got the U8800 a good number of months ago. I loved the device and started working on it straight away, made some good progress. Then I got lower AS Level results than I was hoping for. And my parents decided to split up. So basically, I needed to work harder at school, and my life was kind of a bit more hectic. I have still been working on the U8800, and I almost got CM7 finished. The only issue was that I had no camera preview (I was building libcamera from source rather than using prebuilt libs). A lot of hard work was put into it, and I can't take all the credit. Tom Giordano (Tom_G), bukington, dzo and stockwell were all helpful through the process (although contrary to popular belief I didn't just copy dzo and stockwell, I implemented things in different ways which I thought were cleaner). I respect all of the other developers despite any misunderstandings in the past. This brings me to where I stand today.
For the last few months, I've still been working on CM7 when I've had time to try and get it ready for 7.2, although that hasn't been often. Trying to fix the camera preview proved to be quite a hard process that resulted in me wanting to kill the phone on several occasions. I never succeeded. While I was doing this, Tom_G was working on CM9 for the ZTE Blade and bukington has been doing some great work on CM9 for the U8800. I've now realised that the port won't be ready for 7.2 and I am therefore abandoning it. THIS DOES NOT MEAN I AM ABANDONING THE U8800 OR CYANOGENMOD FOR IT. I am going to focus my efforts on working with bukington to get CM9 working on it. He has already done a lot of the work and it's looking promising. I will spend as much time as I can on it, but I need quite high grades to get to the University I want to be in, so I am aware that most of my time will still have to be devoted to school.
I am sorry to anyone who I have disappointed with this device, but time really isn't something I've had a lot of in the past 6 or 7 months.

hello,
i posted it in the ICS update thread:
Hey, silly question, i know, think it would be asked many times.
i wanne opend a new thread at dev, but i cant't to less comments --_--
now, we know, we never get a 3.X kernel from moto, so, we must help us at our own, i asked me, how?
my idea was, what abei the LG P990, i heard, there are 3.x kernel, no officiel, i know.
What are the hardware differences at the LG and the atrix? fingerprint and camera, i know, but what about the rest?
it it identicly? is it possible, that we can work with it? at beginning, without camera and fingerprint?
perhaps we found an other device with an identicly camera and 3.x kernel, perhaps we can look in a direction like that? only moto bashing wont help anyway

i hope any dev get give informations to me?
the developers already know that moto left us behind..
they're talking about it and what they are going to do??..just the time will tell us...we have to wait hehe
I'm not a developer but sometimes i asked then about start the work from some other similar device's kernel (same that you're suggesting here)..they told that it's an idea but should be necessary a massive rewriting...so it's not easy and they will need time even if the device is similar..
thats the point, i think we don't have any other chance, similar devices kernel, or from scratch, the second is the option which needs more time, i think
i wanne call me a developer, nothing in comparsion with our big ones but i would like to help your devs and i think, i'm not the only one, but i don't know how - i know that is many work and needs massive rewriting, but it's our only option.
i only hope some devs would found together and can say, how we, the, i wanne call it "non-kernel-hackers" , can help.

There will be no more flaming here.....
I know of a dev that might be able to help us, as he has made CM10 stable Kernels for many devices and might be able to help us. He goes by the name of Hashcode, I'd link to a profile but I'm on mobile at the moment x.x

i worte a message to him, i hope he can help us
i'm glad, that this thread went to the direction i thought about at starting it
Anyway, i think that our best chances is to raise a found, by donating, and offer it as a bounty for the first dev to create a 3.x kernel for our device. We might find someone that way. Create that kernel takes lots of time and skills. Very very few people are willing to invest all the time required for free.

I too have sent Hashcode a message asking for possible assistance. I told him we would be willing to donate to the cause.
If you can organise a decent fund/development device, I'd recommend contacting TripNRaVeR. He has experience porting the vanilla 3.1.10 Tegra kernel code to a new device (the One X, which shipped with 2.6.39) hence he's probably already halfway there with knowing where to go next. It looks like LG and Sammy have ditched DVFS in their 3.1.10 releases on the Galaxy R and O2X, which would be nice (using standard governors )
