I don't think Hero support the 3D view and vector map feature in Maps 5.0... at least, I can't get them to work on mine (Floyo 1.2)
Anyone can?
im interested to know this also!
Yeah I had a go at trying out the new maps but I couldn't work out how to get 3D maps. I'll have another go later to see if I can work it out haha
only the latest phones seem to support it!!! So it locks down when it detects which device you are using.... So dam annoying as would have bothered with upgrade as we basically gain NO new features or stability. We have in effect 4.70 with a new version number thats all...

Bummer.. maybe someone can hacks it like brut for navigation? 3D is probably to much to ask but the vector maps would be really sweet.
Ya, I was so psyched when I saw the youtube vids of 5.0.0 3D in action. Then, reality set in and then...
The Hero doesn't have 3D accelerated hardware, so using a "hacked" version of 5.0.0 might slow down the CPU...
Check the thread here... Ive got 3d

Thank you for the correction!
There's not many 3D buildings in Los Angeles...
See THIS POST from THIS THREAD. He seems to have some of the new features of 5.0 running on hero!
If you edit the line, ro.opengles.version, in your build prop to read ro.opengles.version=131072 then tilt and rotate works perfectly.
As far as I can tell, gapps (i.e. market, googlemaps etc,) use the opengl version specified in build.prop to determine what features etc are available.

Works fine on my Hero (Cronos Froyo 1.7.2). It's a little slow, but it all works.

I have been searching for the best and most usefull apps and came across a real nice digital compass. Of course there is no reference to if it will work on an imagio or not. All the forums say "we need actual compass hardware" for them to work. Sorry I don't know the correct terms better. but does anyone know if we can get a real compass on this thing

Here are two...try both! I know Its not the same exact but these both have extra features.
on the HDspeedo you may need to click "ok" several times b4 it loads, other than that they work flawlessly!
so does the htc imagio have a digital compass, i saw these apps for the iphone on bbc click online call augmented reality AR apps, and was wonderin if the imagio would support them once they came out for the windows mobile 6.5, if you dont know what im talkin about go to acrossair.com , it would be awsome if AR apps worked with the htc imagio/wm6.5...

2.1 SDK is out. Progress.
Good news.
We'll need the source before we can take advantage of it as the 2.01 audio libs don't work at all... And for anyone wondering, livewallpapers runs extremely slow and is not worth using yet.
Isn't the source available on AOSP? I thought I saw it the other day when picking through the tree?
Audio works I'm running it right now. It's pretty much the same as 2.0.1 with the addition of livewallpapers. The new launcher isn't included. Most likely because the emulator can't handle the graphics.
http://cid-26b659bcabad8994.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/2.1-SDK-Vogue.zip It's just a generic sdk build with no Google apps. Livewalls works but is slow like mssmision said. Give me a couple and I'll see what I can add.
2.1 wow! ...a while ago i made the switch from sprint to vzw & i have been off of my vogue for some time, but am now back to it -i figured out how to get it running on vzw I am looking forward to playing with all the new changes since i have been away!!
Do you think 2.1 will ever become usable on our vogues? or just bits & pieces like past upgrades?? i.e. especially google gps beta -i used that with the droid and it is incredible!
it's neat to see the familiar faces are still around this forum
btw, what do you guys think is the fastest/most stable version right now for me to use? (been away since november!!!)

you could try the new improved tattoo build or any of the donut builds. they should have the new google maps with navigation. if not you can update maps from market. there is also a 2.0.1 build which is almost the same as 2.1. google has already stated that the 2.1 sdk only has minor api changes.

That's a shame. There should be a Nexus dump the launcher could be pulled from? Think the graphics involved would slow us down too much?

I had the nexus launcher running on 2.0.1 but it's slow and crashes way to much for normal use.
as well the new gallery3d has issues because of gl stuff.. It works, it's slow, and thumbs don't always display.

Thanks Zen! ...i didn't realize there was a 2.0.1 functioning build out. I don't really care about the minor api changes. I will go do some digging and try out that build! it's fun to be back
AOSP repo is pulling down master/eclair right now, I'm watching it update platform/packages/wallpapers/magicsmoke,musicvisualization, etc.
I'm not entirely sure how to do so, but can't we compile this as a build for Vogue?
Well i just booted the nexus dump by replacing system/lib with the one in the sdk and then adding back some missing libs. Not quite usable about as good as Drizzys Droid 2.1.
Just out of curiosity, can you boot the nexus dump @ 240x320?

Wow, interesting.
I've got the Eclair branch (or what I believe to be the Eclair branch, it's labeled as such) from AOSP. I'm building it right now.
I'm optimistic that a clean build from AOSP will run better than the ripped/converted Nexus dump, but as I've never done this before, it's just speculation.
Zen, any advice on setting this up to run natively on the Vogue post-build? Anything I can package/upload for you to play with that might help?
Realistically, what do we have to do to get OpenGL working on Eclair/Flan? Will the G1 update apply to our devices? Having no thumbnails is a real pain, in addition to the occasionally jerky animation.
Hi, anyone getting pinch to zoom to work in google map 4.1.1 on their legend?
pinch zooming is not supported as far as I know
Sent from my HTC Legend using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
right..it's not supported...by now...
it works well on milestone for sure. I used to use a milestone.
my legend cant pinch to zoom in original google map too
But I have install maps4.1.0.4126-brut6.apk, it can be pinch to zoom
being objective
we all love our new gadgets, but we should be objective and considering the idea that this phone is crap... (by now...)
- no pinch to zoom in gmaps
- ring volume problems
- missing apps in the market
- low battery life (in italy with tim, at least)
- facebook apk not working properly (with many contacts)
- mail client with a few problems (attached files "disappear" if sent with apple mail app)
I hope htc fixes all these buggy annoing problems...
HTC Desire has newer firmware, so thatswhy it supports pinch to zoom, etc.
Hoping HTC releases the the 2.1 update 1 firmware soon.
I encountered the pinch to zoom problem (very minor think, i can live with is), and the app market problem, but we know the cause for both.
Another thing I'd like to have on my legend is the rotation of the map with the compass in google maps, do you think is possible?

i question whether they will update it with an updated 2.1 or if they will just wait for 2.2 and update straight to froyo cause apparently its not far off
No info
I sent a mail to HTC about the possibility of the update, but they can't say anything about future updates...
You can try searching the forum for the google map brut r6 it enables pinch zoom. I installed out and out works without any issues.

any update?
Hi all,
Am on the verge of pulling the trigger on a Legend purchase...
Several reviews have hinted there is no pinch to zoom on Google Maps as have the posts in this thread ; fair enough - though is this feature arriving soon?
Or is it something that is simply not going to happen?
Any other users had much luck with ' brut r6 ' ? Does it differ in any way from the original Google Maps?
Any insight appreciated
actually i dont know how many people have noticed that the legend is missing alot of things from other 2.1 phones ie live wallpapers, pinch zooming in map, google earth
makes me wounder if they have done something to the legend to make it less appealing cause there really is no reason why the legend cant to live wallpapers cause the hero does it.
who knows hopefully we will get some stuff back when 2.2 is released
Pinch zooming in Google Maps is pretty desirable [no pun intended], anyone have that working or know whether the Legend will get it ?
Surely there is nothing hardware wise stopping it...
WHY people don't read other replies ?! And why don't you (all) read the forum?!?!?
There's ABSOLUTELY no probs at all having Multitouch (or pinch-to-zoom) in google maps! Go to the link below, download the apk, and get pinch-to-zoom , Google nav and so on!

Is so difficult to download an app and install it ?!?! Come on.......
And... yes...IT ALWAYS WORKS
Thanks, didn't really dive into the 'HTC Dream: G1 > G1 Android Development' subforum as I wouldn't have thought it's applicable to the Legend, if it were, it would've though it'd appear in the Legend subforum...?
Maybe that's just me though, I'm new to Android and therefore may have missed an obvious link between the two.
Thanks for the reply anyway, and for the link. And no, its not difficult to download an app and install it. Though I was asking ahead of a prospective purchase...

Welcome, mate... It's only because I've heard (read) a lot of ppl saying: "Uh...No pinch-to-zoom on GoogleMaps? No google navigator? No APP2SD? No root? No multi-touch?! Then it doesn't worth buying this phone...it sucks!" or similar things... but ALL is possible on Android, thanks to its open-source philosophy, or its huge possibilities for developers, and the GREAT support offered by communities like XDA-dev

They never do :-(
Once I mailed them about when they would release a Sense-enabled firmware for the Magic, and the reply was something like yours.
Later the same day the update was released... so it seems to be the standard canned response, they apparently just don't care to answer that kind of questions.
Hey everyone.
I've installed madacco cupcake because I wanted to use the fully working scummvm for Android to play my really old games lol. Also I can adjust the video screen size when watching videos.
It's running really good but I'm gutted I can't get Google maps navigation on there as it needs donut minimum to install
Does anyone know if there's a "tweaked" version to work for cupcake?
If not does anyone know where I can get a rooted version of donut?
Thanks a lot

I think BRUT.ALL maps works on 1.5 (not sure though). If you search XDA, you will find the APK for it. I have seen it in the Dream forum. It's a tweaked version of G-maps.

Gotta love the glitches that we paid for!!
Blame HTC. But they make phones made if steel and uranium and not plastic so it all evens out.
That's stupid! I thought Google would have been more "picky" in regards to the hardware the "Development" phones would have...guess not!
Well, I don't really care about the full multitouch, as long as i can somehow get maps 5 on my phone later on. Maybe add a onscreen gesture control (like a d-pad)
Oh they can finally make use of the N1 trackpad for the rotation control.

The G2 is on the list, so by extension I don't see why the Desire Z wouldn't support it 100% as well. They're basically the same platform after all.
If its just multi touch that the N1 is not 100% compatible with, thats fine, I can live with that. 99% compatible
I don't understand this new version of Google maps.

It saves data on your most recent routes and often travelled routes I believe. This seems like it's a worthy update but I would appreciate it if I could just stick all of north america on my SD card like nokia's ovi maps. This is definitely better than no caching, provided the maps don't take up a whole lot of internal memory.

For me, the problem is the n1 gpu.... the only thing this phone misses...
I mean there's a lot f 3d in there.... Idk if n1 can handle it
It'll work for the N1. Trust me.
By hook or by crook.
XDA ftw!
Theres an app for the iphone where you can choose an area and download it to the phone.
Thats what we need.
So the only data you need to download "on the road" for navigation is the route and traffic information.
Of course it also needs some sort of update feature for the offline data, in case something changed.

N1 has GPU which is plenty fast. In fact, microsoft currently bets it's whole WP7 platform on it.
And Gingerbread Platform Highlights say, that:
Updated video drivers — The platform uses updated third-party video drivers that improve the efficiency of OpenGL ES operations, for faster overall 3D graphics performance.

That seems stupid not to at least go with the one in the Hummingbird CPU instead of Snapdragon. . . it's 4 times faster.
