I just cant get over how friggin black the black is!!!

Wow just wow i still cant get over it lol. Loving the screen. i hope u guys are too

Yeah, the blacks are incredible on this screen. It's amazing how high-quality the SAMOLED is. It really excites me to see what other devices get SAMOLED panels in the next few years.
Can't wait until they drop in price for use on laptops -- not to mention HDTVs.
I've never used an AMOLED in the sun (just used the HTC Incredible indoors). Does anyone know the biggest differences between the two types of screens? SAMOLED eats less power than AMOLED, and has a higher contrast ratio, right? What else is there, really?
yeah, currently my desktop consist of a purely black screen. I have no icons whatsoever. Along with LauncherPro with it's 3d vertical scrolling, it is so friggin classy!!! [email protected][email protected]#$
LOVE SAMOLED...
SAM's OLED ^_^
It really is amazing....
Really
I am still blown away Man this screen is HOT...Ok no front cam, no flash, Ok just a bit small and the Evo and the droid x ...But WOW..It took me 4mins to root ...and Bang bang tether..
Coming from the G1...and I have 2.2 running with all the bells and whisles..This mature sex thing..has me in love...

The SAMOLED is absolutely fantastic.
80% less reflective
20% better battery life
20% brighter
And just how freakin' cool is the AMOLED screens?

another thing about the black for you battery-life junkies: having a completely black background has been shown to save up to 1.5% battery life per hour with the screen on. thats a lot over the course of a day.

I've been using this all black setup today along with 0 percent brightness, [because I can see everything clear even with 0%! ] from around 9:30ish, i've been on and off on the phone, [um.. because i just got it and I can't get over it haha] Serioulsy, I played games, browsed, called, market just played around. When it was about 10pm ish, the phone still had 20% left. Awesome

LOL, the Korean AMOLED song. NICE!

An Evo user's thoughts on the Epic...

My immediate first impression: It looks better in person that it does in pictures online. I thought it looked pretty bland when I first saw it online, but in person, it's not bad. It definitely looks better than the Samsung Captivate on AT&T, but I still think that the Vibrant looks the best. Once I picked it up, I was surprised by how light it was. Initially, I was disappointed; I thought for a split-second that it was a dummy model that I was holding. It was noticeably lighter than the Evo. I couldn't, however, decide if this was good or bad. The lack of heft puts the Epic 4G dangerously close to being perceived as "cheap and plastic-y". The phone (as well as the other Galaxy S phones) just didn't feel that solid to me. Especially compared to phones that have some noticeable heft to them, like the Evo and Nexus One. I feel that if it were dropped from waist-high, it would shatter into a million pieces or something.
The lack of heft aside, the phone feels really good in the hand. It's rounded corners fell better than the Evo. But because of the keyboard, the phone is pretty thick. I noticed that trying to use the phone with one hand can be difficult sometimes (and I have fairly large hands), especially when trying to reach things at the top of the screen (like the notification bar).
The screen: I have mixed feelings about Samsung's Super AMOLED screen. When I turned on the screen for the first time, one word popped in my head: OVERRATED (the same word that came to me when seeing the iPhone 4's "retina display" for the first time). I honestly don't see the hype. Yes, if you're looking at a picture / movie, the colors look amazing. But looking at text, on the other hand, is a different story. The main problem that I had with the SAMOLED screen is the "screen door effect". You can see the individual pixels! What's worse, you can see them without even looking hard. They are just there, in your face. I have perfect vision, and I have to put my Evo pretty close to my face in order to make out individual pixels. On the Epic, you can see them everywhere. It's really bad when looking at text on a white background (like on almost every website). You can see the white lines in-between the black of the letters. It's like looking at a mini chess board. Here's a picture so you can get an idea for yourself:

I would rather take a regular AMOLED, TFT LCD, or Retina display any day of SAMOLED
Ahhh, the keyboard. This is the ONLY reason I even considered swapping the Evo for an Epic. In short: it's really good. It's one of the best landscape keyboards I've ever used. The keys are really clicky, and are a nice size. My only complaint is that I wish they were domed more. Because they are flat, my fingers tended to slide over to adjacent keys. I'm sure with time I would be really fast & accurate on it. The only landscape keyboard that's better than this one is the one on the Touch Pro 2. That this is amazing.
I'm not gonna talk too much about the software, since we all know what Android is about. What I will say is that TouchWiz isn't that bad. It's actually better than the skin Motorola has put on the Droid2 and DroidX. It's not as good as Sense UI, but it's definitely better than stock Android. Overall, everything I did on the phone was super fast. Scrolling was smooth, and it didn't lag at all. No complaints.
Minor annoyances: -There is a dedicated smiley button on the keyboard… wtf. It would be much more useful it they put the @ symbol there, instead of it. -For some reason, Samsung likes putting the lock/power button on the right side of the phone. Not a big deal on the other Galaxy S phones, but every time I would lock/unlock the phone, the keyboard would move/open a little.
Final thoughts: It's a really good phone. If I had the choice today to either get a free Epic or a free Evo, I'm about 65% sure I'd take the Evo. If I was a new Sprint customer, there is almost no way to justify taking this phone over the Evo, especially seeing as how it's $50 more… Unless, of course, you abso-freakin-lutely need a physical keyboard.
I echo the same thoughts as you and still have my evo, i will try the epic out for 30 days and see if it grows on me but I have slight evo withdrawals. The physical keyboard is nice, I feel like I would miss having that option.
The screen is growing on me, I really love how readable it is in the sun and the colors and contrast are really great.
Another thing you left out is how incredibly fast this phone is. Even at 2.1 without CM6 it blows the EVO out of the water in every way, there is virtually no lag and you don't see the typical tearing or jitterness you get on the EVO. I can't even imagine how smooth it will be when 2.2 is on here...
The one thing that will determine whether I keep it is if the development community will be as good as the EVO. The EVO dev community from the start was bursting with life but the epic dev community seems rather flat and slow so far.
Another concern is Samsungs commitment to keeping the phones up to date and bug free. Something I don't have too much faith in as I saw how they pretty much ignored Samsung Moment customers.
Nice review.
I also own both an EVO and the Epic. My decision to switch was based on the keyboard and the processor speed. Both lived up to my expectations. The speed actually exceeded my expectations, whereas the keyboard isn't as good for games as I thought it would be. Wish it had a more game-like dpad. I think EVERYONE is pissed off about the decision to have a dedicated smiley button.
I'm actually very impressed with the screen. Unfortunately if you look closely you can see the pixels... but only when it's still. I honestly think it's mind bogglingly good when playing games or watching movies. The size of the EVO's screen is definitely a plus. So big. But I can see my Epic SO MUCH BETTER in direct sunlight. Even with auto-brightness on. With my EVO, I had to manually crank it up to 100% to get even a slight idea what I was looking at.
I actually found it to be so much faster than the EVO (even with 2.2). Games feel soo much smoother. Especially 3D games. And I am a huge gamer. Also, surprisingly, TW isn't all that bad (as you said). I actually plan on keeping it for a while. On my EVO I ran launcher pro, but sense is nice too. The EVO has the edge in widgets. No manufacturer's UI has anything close to the same quality widgets that sense has.
I actually don't mind the weight of this phone. I know the EVO feels heavy and sturdy, but the reason the SGS phones are so light is because of their screen technology. Both phones have the same soft-touch back.
All in all, I'm really glad I made the switch. I'm having a lot of fun with the Epic. The only thing I miss from my EVO is the GPS... but we're getting a fix for this this month.
Oh and one more thing. Stock battery life on my Epic KILLS what I experienced on my EVO. I'll post some battery life results later. I almost think my phone is a fluke.
I'd definitely recommend this phone to a new Sprint customer. But that's just my vote. I'm sure other EVO users will chime in.
I feel the same to going to test it a little more for the next 2 weeks I am having 3g probelms for some reason a lot slower then my evo and the wifi shuts on and off but the screen is nice keyboard is awasome and is really fast but evo will make a come back

I too own both, feel like I miss stuff from the EVO, but I am giving the Epic more time to grow. love the screen and +1 for the camera, the Evo has failed me so many times with the camera. Some goods and some bads. if it had tilt/kickstand that would be sweet.

If you get the dock, it will work as a kickstand (its tilted just right). Unfortunately the dock isnt as portable and the headphone hack on the back wont work until the Epic gets 2.2 apparently.
What else do you miss from the EVO? Aside from the large screen? I also have an EVO and it just sits around. I never have any desire to pick it up... but I also refuse to sell it.

Though there are many reasons to justify an Epic over an EVO..keyboard and screen are not the only reason that make the Epic shine...

He makes a good point. The difference with super amoled is that the touch sensor is integrated into the screen, making the overall display MUCH thinner and lighter. It's still AMOLED. Bright and brilliant. I absolutely love it.
i dont know man.. that picture in the first post doesnt look like my epic.. ( I know its a vibrant, i meant the screen) I even put it on the same contacts screen and i dont notice the pixels like i see them in that picture.. and i have 20/20 vision myself. This screen is amazing to me. especially coming from a touch pro 2. and my buddy has the evo.. His screen looks a little washed out next to mine. But it still looks good though dont get me wrong. I love the size of the evos screen and the kickstand is great too. I just needed the keyboard and processor speed which is why i ended up waiting for the epic to come out.. either way both phones are the best you can get on the market right now
heres a close up of how mine looks. i tried to use a similar screen.. this is with a 10mp camera in macro mode so its pretty close up.. the screen wasnt on full brightness. i can see the pixels in this picture because its so close but i cant get close enough with my eyes to even notice it

Considering the monitor size..the left picture is what you see..the right picture if what you would see with a magnifying glass...its not really a fair representation.
What he is seeing is not exactly individual pixels..more like jaggedness..this jaggedness is seen on some small fonts and on straight lines..mostly white lines..but even when text is jagged it is still perfectly readable..it kinda looks a little italic or sharpened lol...on things like bold font or zoomed in text its fairly un-noticable.

The evo's screen (and the Iphone's) look very washed out next to one another. Compare title screens for Angry Birds.

hey nexus ONE owners...why do you stay with the Nexus one? i

just wondering. i can pick one up locally. brand new, for 250.
why do you guys stay with the nexus since it is not made any longer and what do you love about it?
also..hows the battery life compated to a galexyS phone? ( i have the vibrant)
Personally it's because newer devices haven't offered me anything which I really want/need. I am tempted to go with a HC tablet which will give me access to Tegra2 specific apps/games which is all I feel I'm missing when comparing the N1 to newer handsets. It also runs CM (Never mind the plethora of other ROMs) and trackball alert really is hard to beat once you get used to it
i had one right when it came out. there were no roms really yet for it and it was on 2.1 i think...i cant remember how "fast" it was..i do remember i liked the screen, but im concered about battery life..
i LOVED how thin the phoen was...

I get great battery life but it will obviously depend on the user. A combo of setcpu and a decent kernel will definitely help extend the battery. I found that ROMs really kicked off when Froyo hit. Although it has slowed over the past few months the N1 still has great support, especially considering it's nearly 18 months old.

because no other device so far has the same build quality, materials, sexy work-of-art look and feel of the nexus one. plus no other phone has color trackball alert to set ANY notification to ANY color you want. just glance at my phone, blue-new twitter, red-new gmail, yellow-missed call, etc. that is just a necessity once you have it, and not a single other phone is coming out with even a regular notification light, let alone colored.
plus the nexus one is the size of perfection, not so big monsters like these other phones lately. and it still has the amoled screen, not great in the sun, and not as good as super amoled, but all the same indoors.
i just cant find something to replace my nexus one with

it IS in fact teh same screen as the galaxy s, both screens are from samsung. both screens use the same pentile matrix pixel layout. the only difference is the galaxy s has super amoled which means the touch layer and glass layer is merged together to produce thinner glass area. the nexus one has the traditional tiny gap. indoors booth look nearly the same (nexus one is sharper because same resolution but 3.7 inch screen. the galaxy s pixels are more visible). outdoors in sunshine is where the galaxy s might be easier to see the screen.
also, not a single other android device exists that has the desk top dock and car dock. that makes the nexus one the full package that no other android device has.
of course the nexus one has the touch screen bug, cant do more than 2 finger inputs, and has the glitch issue. so its a tough call to buy it now. since its probably only 200 dollars i'd say its a no brainer. but not 500 dollars lol.

Every now and than (1-2 times a day for me) the screen calibration gets borked. So if you touch one spot it reads a few mm away sometimes it thinks your touching the soft keys. The way to "fix" the issue is to shut off the screen than wake it up again.
Thats the only issue I've had. Personally waiting for the HTC Sensation or the next Nexus variant to upgrade.
Free (so far) wireless tethering.
Although I am looking at upgrading to the HTC Sensation 4G when it comes out in June.
I love the n1 because it can do everything i use it for and its still a very responsive phone. I pay 15$ for a grandfathered unlimited data plan from att so until theres a superphone available that can do all mine can do plus more and on att(since im not interested in changing cell providers) then im not really in the new phone market.
i use mine for internet access on the road for work like a the airport for instance.
reference for research for anything and everywhere.
navigation for work and play
music streaming from my home pc with subsonic(fantastic app)
music playing locally while in the car
music music music
reminders and email for work
communication with co-workers and friends via trillian on msn/gtalk/aim/facebook
timewaster and newsreader for my google reader feeds
i dont play many games but the ones i do work decent enough
only drawbacks i see with it is the multitouch, like others have said it will think youre touching the bottom menu buttons for some reason, usually i run into this after i had docked it and undocked it or it had been charging. you can kind of reproduce it if youre movinga touch point in the top left of the screen and then tap towards the lower to mid-right. if you have a multi-touch test app you will see it thinking your finger drops straight down. you get used to it though, i dont mind it too much anymore. being able to rotate the map would be nice like on the vibrant but the two finger perpendicular slide to rotate isnt so bad. I still love my n1 a lot more than my girlfriend's vibrant which is tainted by the samsung ui overlay nonsense. give me aosp or give me death.

the glitch is every once in a while the screen thinks you touched a different spot. this happens about once a week for me, mostly less than that. its easy to fix, just lock the phone then swipe to unlock, the issue goes away for another week lol. but it IS a hardware issue that can never be fixed, so we just live with it.
other than that i think the screen is just fine for responsive. probably not the best in the world, but its good to me. touch a spot and it registers immediately.
I love my sexy nexyyyyyy!!!! I like trackball that's why i keep my N1.

Z2 first impressions

Its of course selling eggs to grandma as you guys probably have this phone but I just wanted to say its the best phone I have ever used.
I have come from an iPhone, and previously used a Galaxy S4, HTC One and Note 3
1. Build quality - lovely. Samsung needs to leave iPhone 3 style and plastic fantastic. HTC is also very nice - difference is a taste thing
2. Screen. Excellent. Can't really comment. Samsung looks more 3D but also more weird. Sony is somehow more crisp.
3. Takes an SD card - yay!
4. Buttons really nicely placed
5. A photo button - Sony's camera division makes itself know
6. Sony software is non-intrusive
7. Mostly weather proof
8. Battery capacity significantly higher (3200 vs 2800&2800). However S5 does have a removable battery
9. On switch on the side (not the top which is a pain) and can set the phone to have a double tap to switch on, which is great
Galaxy S5 looks and feel disappointing, still plastic fantastic.
HTC One M8 very nice. Not much in it. Prefer the more military look of the Z2
It was also nice to get a screen protector in the box. A small thing I know but useful.
Development points ? have to say something to sound honest but really can't think of much. The door covering the charger point looks a bit flimsy. understand its needed for the water proofing but lets see how it goes. Would like a numeric line of keys in default keyboard. Could someone also make a dock that can be used with the a case on!!! Some silly extras, like a 4k res screen but I guess this will happen at sometime in the future
Perhaps the top phones are so good these days that its all down to taste really, but the keyboard is good on the Z2 and I feel, along with the Note 3, that Android has finally answered the usability of the iPhone but with much enhanced functionality.
best rgds
It definitely is a amazing phone.
1. Screen is amazing & super sharp quality, images look great on it (I turn off x-reality as it kinda "samsungs" the colours & makes them too poppy)
2. No issues with sound quality, others have complained about notification volume etc but last night I was on the PC, the TV was on & the phone was sitting on the couch way across the room & I got a notification & almost jumped, guess it depends on the quality of the sound files you use, call quality is also good & you can tweak the equaliser.
3. Battery life is amazing, I'm getting just over 2 days with 7 hours+ SOT, gaming browsing, emails & syncing etc.
4. Build quality is pretty damn good other than slight gap issue, last 2 devices were galaggy S & galaggy S3 & really hated the plastic lightweight feel of them, Z2 feels much more premium & nicely weighted.
5. Camera quality is good as well, it will never be as good as a dedicated camera but it does a damn good job of coming close, just look at some of the pics taken by members here in various threads.
6. The sony UI is much more subtle, quicker, smoother & less invasive than samsungs touchwiz though there are a few niggles.
7. Waterproofing is a bonus but I for one won't be dunking it in water.
8. Music quality is great as well & there a good few settings you can tweak to get it to sound better, I like to listen to Led Zeppelin bootlegs & the sound settings allow me to get it sounding great even if it a AUD or SBD recording.
9.Double tap to wake works 95% of the time for me.
10. It is sleek & super sexy to look at.
Some gripes.
1. Really miss a reboot option in the power menu but then I used to custom roms.
2. Can get very warm when gaming, using the camera or websurfing on sites that have lots of animated gifs.
3 Lockscreen widgets seem to be restricted in size, I use Chronus on the lockscreen & notice that some info like weather & date are slightly truncated unless to drag down on the widget then it displays ok but goes back to being truncated again.
4. The glass back does make the phone feel a lot more slippery than I would like but it too sexy looking to put a case on, bit like having a supermodel but putting a bin liner over her head when going out.
5. The over heating does worry me as it gets very hot right where the microSD card is & I have experienced music playback issues right after gaming, let it cool down & music played back fine.
6. Sometimes the lockscreen swipe doesn't work with a horizontal swipe but it does with a vertical swipe.

On my Nexus 4 (also has a glass back) I put a screen protector on just the back of it (back protector, I guess?). This made it much less slippery without sacrificing much, if anything, in terms of aesthetics. You could give it a shot.

Note20 Ultra Appreciation Thread

This phone is AMAZING. Holy crap. Near perfect phone, for me.
What's your favorite things about it so far? Any surprises? Things you've noticed?
For me:
-WOW 120Hz is amazing. Ditto the 9ms response on s-pen.
-The new Notes app is pretty different!! The pages thing makes sense since it exports to PP. It's interesting how the folders are used instead of categories. The whole look is different though... Mine defaults to black, the save button moved or disappeared, the bottom bar is different... Still adjusting!
-5G sucks in my area with T-Mobile. 12 Mbps. I shut it off so I only get LTE, and I get 71 Mbps. That's in my house though, so it'll probably be better outdoors. I hear 5G doesn't penetrate buildings well.
-The finish and feel of the phone is PHENOMENAL. So premium. Blows every other phone away, easily. Definitely pinky tones in the bronze, but I don't care. I'm rocking a clear case because this phone NEEDS to be shown off. The Spigen Liquid Crystal is great! My wife asked me if I bought a pink phone, haha.
-Camera doesn't show the zoom levels right away, which surprised me. I was trying to figure out how to choose the zoom. Had to choose the close up button first I believe. 50x zoom sucks indoors. Grainy as heck!
-That camera bump is beautiful, don't care what anyone says, haha.
-Fingerprint scanner... What on Earth happened? It's SO MUCH BETTER. I haven't had a single failure yet! I had them CONSTANTLY on my Note10+. Either I programmed my fingers better or this thing is way better.
-Hate the new s-pen location. Awkward for 93% of the population.
-Did they remove the ability to turn on the battery percentage? I'm not seeing it.
NO REGRETS! THIS PHONE RULES!
Its an amazing phone. I am coming from a galaxy S8+ so its a huge step up. The last note I had was the the note 4 and the note 7 for like 3 weeks. It does have the battery percentage option. When you pull down the notification panel, the 3 dots icon next to the settings icon and click status bar, that will let you add the battery percentage. I don't feel any issues with the s pen placement. Now I just need a good screen protector for it, but there isn't too many options yet and I am not a fan of those tempered glass protectors. The battery life on it is good too. FIngerprint scanner is super fast. Much better on the front of the screen than behind like it was on the s8. I wish I had also got the moga controller when I ordered the phone, but it is what it is. I just have to wait till september 15th to get it now.

Yeah that's for to be a MASSIVE jump in quality! I'm pumped and I'm coming from last year's Note! I think the s-pen bothers me more because I've had it on the right for the last 6 years... So it's muscle memory at this point for me.
I haven't had a screen protector on my Note phones since the 5, and I've never had a scratch! Not sure your usage obviously, but they're really strong. And getting stronger by the year! I like that smooth, naked feel of the glass.

Have you experienced it?? I haven't yet. I read one person complaining about it.
this thread makes me sad knowing that my order won't be with me til monday.
My Clear view case is arriving tomorrow though - maybe ill root that :laugh::good:
I don't notice an improvement in the finger print scanner, still seams slow and fails often still. I turned off battery optimization for biometrics and that didn't seem to help either.

Is it at least clearing up? I don't take pictures while I'm driving with my phone mounted so if it clears up then it's no issue to me.
Love mine. Battery life isn't perfect but pretty much everything else is

Agreed. And even battery life is pretty solid considering the screen!
Not a big jump from the 10 plus for me but:
-Love the zoom on the camera, im pleasantly surprised how well it works.
-The smaller punch hole is definitely noticeable and appreciated.
-I find it very comfortable to hold
-Love the new Spen location
-Really love the GD power button back where it should be lol
-Almost zero bezel and slightly bigger screen is noticeable for me
-camera bump doesnt bother me at all, i though it might...dont even notice it
-the 512gb of storage is great
- snapdragon 865 plus is fast as blazes
- fingerprint scanner MUCH better than 10plus
Not negatives but must mention
- I dont notice the 120hz a ton honestly
-Battery life is close to the 10 plus but maybe just a bit worse but ive only had it not a week yet so may still improve
Maybe I'm in the minority but was the delay on the spen that big of a deal?

Really? I went back to 60Hz for a little while to try and compare battery life and almost vomited. Couldn't do it. Try it out if you haven't! A/B comparisons are always the best. Agreed on all other points. VERY pleasantly surprised about the fingerprint scanner improvement. That drove me nuts on the 10+.
Battery being about the same is actually impressive considering the improvements to the screen!
That 5x zoom is AMAZING. Took kids to the zoo yesterday... That was really useful. And they're so CLEAR at that 5x zoom. Absolutely great!

For me it wasn't a big deal, but once I tried the new one... I bet it'd be hard to go back it's so instantaneous now. I love it. I use the s-pen hours a day though, haha.
Totally agree with:
* Fingerprint scanner vastly improved since S10+, Note 10+, S20+
* Build quality and feeling while holding is really superb
* 120hz are significantly noticeable, but you get used to it quickly (you realize how noticeable it is, when you go back to a 60hz device)
I'm also leaning towards using it bare naked, to enjoy the actual premium looks and build quality...
However, after 7 days of careful use, I already see some superficial, light scratches on the screen (under certain light angles) ...
Do you really don't have the slightest, tiniest, scratch on it, @PsiPhiDan?
I don’t know if i can post this video comparison of my S20 Ultra vs Note 20 Ultra rattling sound. I’ve seen people complaining about it on the Note 20 Ultra.
But here it is....
https://youtu.be/a_o52ZzwqEE
Conclusion: ***spoiler***
....it is so much quieter than the S20 Ultra. And I appreciate it. :good:

Oh I see. Maybe I'm just bad at seeing them? I haven't seen a scratch on my screens on Note devices since the Note5. So maybe I'm just not looking in the right light. Definitely not gonna start now! Haha.
