I’m not trying to upset anyone here but I have to be honest about my first thoughts on the Galaxy screen. Tonight I stopped by a T-Mobile store and with my iPhone 4G and HTC Evo, I tried out the T-Mobile Vibrant. I had all 3 phones on, side by side and I really was not too impressed with the SGS screen due mostly to that awful screen door matrix.
When I held the SGS about 6 inches away from my eyes, I could clearly see the pixel grid (or whatever it’s called) and was just put off by it. I can honestly say that I feel the best looking screen is the iPhone’s without a doubt and the Evo comes in 2nd. The iPhone’s small screen is a pretty big problem for me but now I’m just not sure which device to stick with.
Am I really the only one who can see the matrix and is bothered by this??? I really wanted to just fall hard for this phone on first contact and I could have. It just drives me crazy that all 3 phones have really nice features and I’d gladly pay double if not triple to have the best of all 3 devices in one device………
You're right, the pixels do annoy me a little, only coz I'm a perfectionist...
The colours are beautiful though; and in normal use I never notice the pixels...

So I'm assuming you just got used to after a while? I was looking at the notification bar and the battery and other icons seemed to look kind of low res to me. I guess this is what people are talking about when they say it has larger pixels.

Not trying to be annoying, but you only see the pixels, because steve told you so.
I saw the pixels too, because steve told me to look at them, would have never looked if iphone 4's dpi wasn't so hyped.
I think the screen is very much amazing with full brightness, hope you checked that the one in the store was set to 100% brightness too and not just focus on the pixels.
Next time try to do something real with the phone, like watch youtube HD and then do the comparison to iPhone and you will be all happy again.
Good luck

I see what you're saying but I guess I'm not really talking about the pixels but rather the type of screen used that gives that screen door look. Remember, I stated that I still have no issues with the Evo screen which I think looks much better in person than it does in photos online compared to the SGS screen.
On the other hand, if you habitually hold your phone at 6" from your face, you should probably consult an optometrist
In practice, the pixels are indistinguishable from those of the EVO, or of the iPhone 3Gs. But, the overall experience is noticeably richer with the Super AMOLED, IMO.
The screen is the biggest thing this phone has going for it, and why I've decided to stick with it.
I don't think you were seeing the sub pixel's pentile pattern. Sub pixels on any device are way too small to see; a camera macro is needed to see them, and you need to press your lense against the screen itself.
The thing is, it had the same leaf and water live wallpaper that my Evo has and yet I could see that grid on it and not the Evo. 6 inches btw' was just to get closer because I thought I started to notice something.
I own the SGS and ive used a Iphone4 a few times, even though the res did look a little sharper, side by side you would have to be really picky to care, the colour of the SGS is much more noticable than the slight res difference.
The iphone4 just looked bland to me.
I have a iphone 3g for work as well, not as fast as the 3gs, but after owning the SGS for nearly 2 weeks i hate having to use the iphone.
I'm used to the pentile matrix since it was also on my Nexus One.
It definitely can give a rough looking edge on some elements but not enough to make me consider ditching the phone even for a moment.
I certainly cannot see the pentile matrix in photos and videos nor in games.
If pentile goes with denser pixels (say 1280x720) I don't think you'd notice it at all on a 4" screen, but it brings the benefits of increased battery life (though this may be marginal?)
Anyway, it can be seen but it really doesn't bother me personally.

So you're saying that after sometime, one could get used to the screen and no longer notice the matrix? Unless of course Morpheus comes knocking to wake us up.
Now everyone see the pixel.. because Steve said to watch it!
The screen is probably a net downside to the phone for me - high contrast ratio is great, but I'd sooner give that up than compromise on true resolution and sharpness from the PenTile matrix. It seems I'm in a minority with that opinion!
Unfortunately there's no real choice unless I want to start compromising on the rest of the hardware instead. The iPhone does send to set trends, for better or worse, and I do hope the iPhone 4 starts one for higher DPI phones. Going from QVGA to VGA was immediately a massive improvement.
A little real life perspective here would be nice. 4" screen with 480x800 pixel resolution is one of the highest out there already.
I tend to use my phone from about 18" away, so I care what the screen looks like, not the individual pixels. Plus my Sammy can update those pixels 3x faster than the Evo.

Exactly. The monstrous hardware behind the SGS is the real deal here. Even if this "pixelated screen" is a big deal for some people (definitely not my case...), the fluidity, contrast ratio, brightness and colors make more then up for it.
Six inches from your face??! Dude i cant even focus that close. The screen is awesome end of discussion.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
When putting it very close to my face, yes, i can see the PenTile matrix.
But that's complete nonsense- it's visible only if you search for it and the screen is more than sharp enough for reading even small sized text in the browser.
On the other hand, i enjoy the true blacks and amazing colors the screen gives.
The iPhone 4 just can't compare, and while watching videos/playing games/taking or viewing pictures etc. that is a much more important factor.
I won't ever give away better color for some more PPI.
I really like hi-res panels (so much that I bought in 2003 a dell laptop with a 15.4 1920x1200 screen!), but I can assure you that the i9000 res will not be a problem. Of course I would have loved a higher RES - (and 2ghz and and and) but I think that the res is fine for reasonable distance viewing.
I think the real benefit of the screen are the colors, the contrast and the size. After some point the resolution is already good enough that you start focusing on other parameters as well.

I can see pixels...clearly...even l looks jagged...and I'm typing while laying on my belly, and I wear glasses but I can still see them...onmy hero it wasn't so easy to see the pixels, but then again, it might just be that I expected pixels to standout on the hero screen so it didn't bother me as much.
But still, these SAMOLED's aren't as good as they're hyped upto be...
Well, no. I lied. The screens are brilliant, but just a lil short of expectations. I.e. the fact that my white seems tan unless brightness is up past 50% (although the screen is still very bright even at 0, its just an annoying tint :[ )and it doesn't seem to me that the blacks are indeed pixels that are turned off...but then again, my eyes are silly.

yeah, i'm not sure if everyone can see it unless you really look. I had to point it out to my gf, then she noticed it.
Hah guys, you don't even have to really look for it. It's just more evident at times than other times. It's constantly, CONSTANTLY, mentioned and its a draw back of the SAMOLED displays. It's normal, just like the over saturated colors. The display is beautiful when viewing media, other times it can be an issue, or more of an annoyance for some. You don't have to look hard, you don't need a "microscope" as someone mentioned, it's there. Anyone can see it.
Some folks want to act like their Evo is perfect, some want to running their Epic is perfect. Sadly, either, are not. It's not just the Epic, it's the display. It's a fact. A known fact.

It a regular screen not a HD one..
Yeah, the "screendoor effect" is a issue that comes with Super Amoled screens.
But to be honest, I've never noticed or cared about it. Yes, if I look VERY closely I can see the pixely effect, but is it a problem? No. Do I even notice it on a daily basis? No.
The pure brilliance of the super amoled completely over weighs the downfalls in my opinion. Putting the Epic next to the Evo, the screen murders the Evos washed out LCD screen. I prefer super amoled even to the Iphone4s retina display.
But I've seen lots of people whine about how bad the pixels are on the s.amoled. And if you can't deal with it, the Epic isn't the phone for you, since its not something that can be changed easily.
I used the Voodoo screen fix, which DOES improve the level of visible pixelation, and smooths it out a great deal, but the screen is so horribly yellow at 0% that I can't use it.

So whats the big deal? Just get a different phone and your problems are fine

I hope this is a joke...
Anyway, the screendoor effect of this screen combined with the lower number of subpixels steered me away at first. The Evo is much better for sharpness/accuracy, but the novelty of OLED is hard to beat. I ordered an Epic anyway, had to have the processor.
The way i look at it, it all comes down to preference.
There is no perfect technology for these little (or larger)panels yet.
It is almost like comparing Plasmas to LED LCD's, one has advantages and disavantages over the other. (ex: screen burn in, refresh rate, or contrast ratio over brightness)
On android handsets I myself prefer AMOLED for its vibrant colors(but not so accurate), excellent blacks levels and all around even viewing angles.
Now when looking at all current technologies i would say that Apple takes the cake.
The iPhone 4 has a fantastic LCD w/ IPS screen, but the trade off is that it is only available on the iPhone, and it is only offered at a 3.5" inch size.
The pixel density on the retina display is unmatched at that size, and i would take a 4'' inch LCD w/ IPS + higher pixel density + gorilla glass over SAMOLED any day. I would recommend you walk into a store and compare the Epic with iPhone 4 side by side, and you will see what i mean.
Just my .2 cents.

Not in terms of deep blacks or contrast, AMOLED also has the EDGE on the colors.
But yeah, the iPhone screen is gorgeous and as i said before, i would take that technology over AMOLED, at least till it is a bit more refined.
One more thing to consider...

Yes, true, size is better ... obviously. But colors? Sometimes the SAMOLED display looks fake. I'm over my past apple phase but yes, the display is truer in every sense of the word. Not saying you, specifically, but you all act like your Epic is perfect when fact, it has more flaws than the Evo. At times that screen is gorgeous, but through and through and in the long run I would still take the Evo display over the Epic's.
The Epic, as with the all SGS devices, is not close to the hype people give em. Not only the devices ...but the screen as well.

I chose the Epic over the Evo mainly for 3 things:
Camera, GPU and overall performance, as the Evo stinks on those 3 areas.
Other than that i would have chose the the Evo, i don't care too much for the AMOLED as long as the LCD is of decent quality and calibrated properly.
A selling point which is the hardware keyboard is almost useless to me, and it is not used 90% of the time.
I also see what you mean about colors looking fake at times, but i think some of that could be fixed if the display is calibrated properly.
I still think AMOLED has the potential to show deeper blacks than LCD's but i guess i could be wrong since i am not an expert in the subject, just a personal observation.
You see a penis?
Hey, its a fact about the screen. I just find it funny when I browse the Epic section and see people busting a nut over their phone. They act like its better than the Evo. Only category it trumps it is in the GPU category. And for the non gamers, read ; majority, that isnt important. The screen gets too much love too, which I thought was the point here. Somethig I noticed immediately and am amazed every Epic owner hasn't noticed at some point. If not week 1.
And trying to rationalize the lack of 2.2, which I've seen a lot around here, is a sad state to find yourselves in.
The latter has nothing to do with the OP or the matter at hand ... but it fits you all quite well.

Terms of a camera, if you're a serious shooter you don't use your phone ... you have a legit shooter. We know ratings don't mean much and yes, your camera is better ... marginally. Way some talk I'd think it was leagues ahead of the Evo's ... which it isn't.

UI performance all around is laggy on the Evo (i have used both side by side) and that is even running on Froyo 2.2.
Camera performance on both photo and video quality mode are a pathetic joke as well, the Camera on the Epic is much more usable.
This illustrates my point well, check it out:

I used to think that way until i saw some of these:

I would say the Epic is a pretty good replacement for casual photo taking.
Gonna assume you didnt see the double post, which I'm ashamed of. Phone cameras are good for shooting silly pictures of anything from your baby puking on himself or your drunk friend passed out with his junk out.
If camera quality is so important to anyone they have a shooter. I have admitted, and will forever admit you have the better cam quality between the two phones. Doesn't mean anything though, to be honest, for the majority.

Got my phone a few hours ago. Speed is really nice, battery already looks to be as impressive as I thought it would be (2.5 hours of playing with it continually and it hasn't budged), and it overall just feels like a well constructed quality device.
The screen however is another thing. The biggest problem is the colors are washed out, and the contrast seems to be pretty bad too. Going to play with a store demo tomorrow, hopefully I just got a bum one, but I'm getting the feeling after stuffing everything else in there they decided a to cut costs with a low quality lcd.
Really its qhd or super amoled? I wanna buy one but needs to match or be better then my nexus s screen.

The resolution is qhd, 960x540, which is nice, you get used to having the extra resolution real quick. The panel however is just a regular lcd, not amoled.

The qHD screen looked really damn good from the demo I saw in the store. I put it up against my IP4 screen, which was admittedly a little better (crisper and a little brighter), but the Atrix screen easily takes a close second from any device I've seen so far.
The color of screen is a huge disappointment to me.
Yeah people are saying you can't expect the vividness of the captivate. That's obvious, they're completely different kinds of screen the atrix's screen was never going to be as vivid. I'd just like the colors to actually be the correct shade, yellow is especially bad.
I turned auto brightness off and jacked it up to about 50%, helped the colors, but doing that really makes the pentile "matrix" show up.
I think the screen is pretty damn good.
The captivates S AMOLED is overaaturated compared to the LCD screen of the Atrix. qHD is just a higher resolution screen.
I have the captivate, my room mate just got the Atrix. I too am extremely disappointed in the screen quality. Still, everything else about the phone is great so far.
The screen is akin to the droidX screen which is terribly washed out and unsaturated. I doubt I'll ever have a display as nice as the super amoled for a long time since I don't like samsung. their stuff is all cheap feeling
First of all samsung is a pretty well regarded company in terms of overall quality of their hardware. Secondly, any sort of oled display will oversaturate colors, and you have become used to that. Any photoeditor/photographer will tell you that between the 2 displays, the Atrix will produce to most accurate color reproduction.
I have a Nexus One, S, and Atrix 4g that came in today.
Side by side, the Atrix's screen leaves a lot to be desired IMO. My Nexus S screen's black are so much crisper on the same settings and same extra wallpaper with flat black.
Other than that, my Nexus S just simply looks sexier as a phone but I am really enjoying the functionality of my Atrix. Sticking with Atrix since I'm stuck on ATT unless an ATT Nexus S comes out.
This is very, very disappointing news. I really wanted this phone but not if it has a sub-par screen. That's the most impressive thing about my SGS. It's the one thing Samsung got absolutely right. And I'm not willing to settle for less. Some say the colours are over saturated but I would take it's screen every single time over the IP4's. And considering the SGS2 is coming with an ever better screen... Well, it's beginning to look like those bastards are getting my money again.
Depressing.
This is very bad news to hear, I was really looking forward to yhis phone, but im too used to amoled screen, moto has to come up with sumthing similar
Screen brightness/contrast is one thing (amoled vs lcd)
resolution is another... 800x480 is overplayed and ugly, nothing has challenged the iphones retina yet
The atrix is a first in higher resolution, and I think thats a winner for me
This comes down to personal preference. The atrix screen to me is far better than the captivate and nexus simply because it doesnt exaggerate colors. I cant stand the over saturation on the SMOLED screens. Its literally brutal to look at.
the screen is not bad at all, you people are exaggerating
the camera on the other hand is kinda ... meh ....

Battery life goes something like this (I have a pretty old battery though).
About 12PM my fascinate gets to around 50% (heavy usage).
Same exact usage on incredible, it's around 55%.
BUT...when the incredible passes 50% it seems to drain much quicker than the fascinate. I give the nod to the fascinate for battery life at this point, but I don't think the incredible battery life is as bad as people make it out to be. I will be getting an HTC evo battery, which fits in the stock incredible case and lasts longer.

My buddy has an incredible with this battery, and he told me it really didn't make much difference. Lasts slightly longer than stock, but probably not worth what he paid for it. Not enough bang for the buck I suppose.
Also, to the guy above me asking about the screen. That same buddy complains about his incredible screen everytime he looks at my fascinate. So, I would assume you would miss it if you switched to the Inc. Fascinate has one of the best screens around in my opinion

To be honest, I prefer the incredible screen over the fascinate screen. Why? Because the colors look more natural (and yes I have the amoled incredible). For example...if you open up the browser on each and go to google, the whites are pure white and look fantastic on the incredible while the whites look very blue on the fascinate. This is after turning auto brightness and power saving mode off. Nothing fixes it.
BUT, the fascinate performs SO much better in sunlight. This is because the incredible has an extra layer of reflective glass.

Guess you never heard of opinions. If you want to go by specs, then the incredible's screen has a higher PPI, thus better screen.
But I'm going off opinion. I own both. Like I said, the fascinate screen performs so much better than the incredibles in sunlight, but the incredible's looks more natural (especially on whites) and the text is slightly sharper.
Super amoled just removes a layer of glass which is why it's better in sunlight, but for some reason the amoled on the galaxy s phones has a blue tint, while the amoled on incredibles doesn't.
Just opened up the market on each one right next to each other...the blue tint on the galaxy s almost gives it a "washed out" look. The incredible's looks much better in my opinion. Pure whites and the colors all look "separated" and natural rather than covered in a blue tint.

Well imho, I agree with endgadget and all the rest, the clarity and color of the super amoled blows everything else away. I've owned an x, a continuum and the fascinate...the continuum was far the best, but the x was way to dull. Looked at the incredible specifically for the ppi, however it just didn't compare to the fascinates pure wet looking color.

I'm honestly not sure what you're talking about with the blue tint? I stared at google.com for a solid minute or so, and I see no blue tint. Is it just the fact that I'm used to looking at this screen?

Probably. Sit it next to a phone with no tint, and you will see a pretty big difference.
Ive had so many phones over the past year it unbelievable but the screen on the galaxy s2 is so much better than what they mention in reviews. Theres no friggin way this comes second to the iphone retina display, Resolution isnt everything.
I took a picture in the dark the other day without the flash by mistake so when i clicked to preview the image i though for a moment that my screen had turned of because of how true the blacks were. . Im sticking to Samsung for as long as they make phones because i am impressed with what they make, just a shame really that apple are having there products banned in some country's
Give your opinion It will be nice to see what all you think aswell?

Super AMOLED, not Super AMOLED Plus.
Quite a big difference, actually.
This display remindes me of old ferrari engines. The sound and the rev fantastic, a pleasure to drive, but some of them had early problems and the lifetime where actually quite low compared to others.
This display has great things, vivid colors, contrast and real blacks, the viewing angle... but some have yellowish tint or blue, strange paterns on grey or similar colours, and if you go and see the displays of S2 exposed on stores that stay on during days you can see the display doesnt live long withou shadows and yellow spots, and the known ghost problem...
Well, I don't experience any of these yet. Read that color tint was software problem. Anyway, my display needs to last 1-2 years max. After that I will be using new device.

The colour tint isn't a software problem, but it can be "masked" by software so that it's not noticeable. Either way though, you're right. It is a great screen and other than resolution I can't see anything better about. It'll last me my contract for sure.
Lovely display. Better than anything out there. So happy to be an owner of S-AMOLED Plus.
I come from HTC Desire Z with Super LCD Plus screen. We used to compare it to my friend's iPhone 4 and found them to perform very close, with Desire Z having slightly richer colors.
But this Super Amoled Plus display is out of this world!

Too big for me... I like how the 4.3" size fits perfect in my hand and let me do things. Adding 1inch makes the phone really big... I saw a review and the guy could barely hold it in his hand.
When I take a black photo and show it on the phone in the dark I can see the screen light up a little. Is this how it is supposed to be or is it just my phone?

Yes it's not small, but some time ago I thought SGS2 is too big and I bought HTC Desire Z instead, yet I'm using SGS2 now ;-) Second - I have seen people holding the new Galaxy Tab 7.7 in one hand. I do realize Note is big, but it is still pocketable, while any other tab would not be. All my keys, money, IDs and devices need to fit in my pockets or belt case. That way I always have important stuff on me, no need for any bags which I could forget.
And because I rarely make any phone calls, using device mainly for web browsing or other things, I keep thinking about Galaxy Note

same happens here too, and also with every AMOLED screen. i guess amoled blacks aren't really superblack

Galaxy S2 seems like normal size for me. Galaxy Note might not be that big.
Galaxy Note is gonna rock.

When you take a picture that is too dark, camera tries to adjust the brightness of the picture and add more exposure/brightness. If the picture is really black, your gs2 will show real black. The only phone display in the world that shows real black.

for around 700-800 euros it bloody should rock too mate its an exspensive bit of kit its more high end tab prices then high end phone prices from what i have read on gsm arena
I guess I have big hands, I can easily hold and operate S2 with either hand. So I guess I can probably do the same with Note, albeit a bit awkwardly.
Also it's not true black. Make a black pic with photoshop, load it on your screen and go to a dark room, and you'll see.

Download "Screen test" from market. There is a pure black picture to check dead/stuck pixels. On my screen in complete darkness it is so perfectly black that i cant see my phone.
Super Amoled Plus is indeed amazing with its vibrant colours and contrast. What's more amazing is that at 4.3 inches it's really the perfect size (at least for me) as it is the maximum screen size where you can hold the phone nice and easy with one hand.
