Anyone using x-series from 3 UK on their universal. If so what are the settings for the internet and how does skype work on 3 ? Do you just download Skype for Mobile?

As far as i know, Skype on x-series is a different proposition altogether from Skype for Windows Mobile. The two applications are different. Skype on x-series works over the GSM network so you can make and receive Skype calls anywhere in return for a small monthly fee to 3 (i think it's £5?). Skype for WM on the other hand works for free over WiFi (like the PC version) or over a 3G cellular connection if you have one (beware using it on 3G without an unlimited data plan though). You can download Skype for WM free directly from the Skype website.
I don't believe the x-series application would execute on the Universal as i imagine it was designed specifically for Symbian OS but i may be wrong. Let me know if you find otherwise

I have just added x series silver to my 3 contract and using it to surf internet and skype on my XDA Exec without any problem.
You would have been able to do this before as 3 allows full access now, the thing to be careful of, is do the applications on the X Series use a special proxy to differentiate between the plan you have purchased, and full open internet access.

I was able to use Skype before 3 activated x series, but I wasn't able to browse the internet apart from mobile.three.co.uk.
Everytime I typed in a web address (ie news.bbc.co.uk), I used to get the message ' You can only use this service on a 3 handset' or something similar to this. Now all websites work fine.
Also, if I was being charged for data, would this show up on 'Amount Spend' section of My 3? Anyone know?

You shouldn't receive any additional charges, the Pro package allows you to use 3GB and the phone as a modem, whilst the Max package allows 10GB and VOIP use.
I'm not entirely sure how they check but seeing as the basic package advertises internet on your mobile, I dont see how a pocket pc ssh client would be breaking that.
I'm thinking of upgrading to the Max so that I can use skype and I'm starting to use alot of data now I've got Orb set up...!

Not to be used for other activities (including but not limited to): modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video downloads, internet phone calls and instant messaging.
The question is what does not limited to cover. I note somewhere else on their site it says you can't download pdf, xls,doc or mp3 on basic. it's really not very clear and the support staff don't seem not understand what an SSH server is. I don't understand what's wrong with just having a simple usage cap.
OK so I am new here, but I am not new to mobile devices at all. In fact I was a Mobility Admin in different forums. So please don't get mad at me for posting here. I have some questions. Connect to the internet
Download Files
Stream Music (orb)
Stream Video (badly[orb])
Use Google Maps
I can't:
Connect To IM servers, I have tried all of the programs. OZ for T-Mo is the only one that works, but it's horrible.
No YouTube, I can live without this but I hope to get it working.
MIDP can't connect.
Basicly nothing, that doesn't connect from, IE works.

I have played with the Proxy settings and nothing. I know that with my Treo 650 I could connect through VeriChat, but I can't connect on WM6.
Is there a program out there that can help me fix this?

I do not have an obvious solution but have also seen plenty of similar comments here from others - not just with T-Mobile either. I am using T-Mobile in the UK and have none of your problems.
I obviously had the original T-Mobile Vario II build (WM5) but now have the Black MAJIK build with WM6 and all has been fine with both. Some people directly accuse T-Mobile of blocking their IM, but I have no issue with it - albeit I use it rarely. Of course it "may" be that T-mobile are indeed blocking some services to 'offenders' (IM is not allowed) but I wonder if their system is that capable.
Obvious questions for you are: what OS are you using? Have you changed ANY comms settings from the original T-Mobile build? Have you tried a hard reset to restore original settings (including the all important T-Mobile extended ROM)?
If you still have the original OS ROM build running then you might try installing the configuration .cab files that are stored on the Extended ROM separately - some apply directly to such device settings. Access to that Extended ROM on the WM5 build is easy and you just need an application such as "HTweakC 2.0" (available here). Of course, and as ever, start with backing-up your device - but you will know that.

I have setup the internet (GPRS) settins like they are suppose to be.
I believe that it is a fact that T-Mo has blocked ports, and has only left http smtp and pop3 open. So my dilema is why did verichat connect on my Treo 650 and not on my MDA or my 8525.

if you are in tmo usa then you can't
if you have the proxies 216.155.165.50:8080 the most you can use is PIE (pocket internet explorer)
the best thing is to get the blackberry $20 dollar add-on plan and just setup without proxys. wap.voicestream.com and you have full internet access.
I am in the USA, and I have the T-zona 5.99 plan.
I am less than reluctant to close my mind for this not to work, since google maps works. and, as I said, on my Treo 650 using verichat worked perfectly.
I don't know what the difference in the way the Treo 650 connected and the way my 8525 connects.
Perhaps the programs that can connect are ones that ones that connect through port 80 and are proxied to 8080.

Hi, just wondering if there is any app that will block all applications from accessing the internet thru data connection (not wifi), unless given express user approval - like a zonealarm popup or something? I hope something like this exists, as I want to make sure I don inadvertently connect since I only get 10 megs a month...

With the announcement that T-mobile will start charging $15 per month for tethering this month, does anyone know how this affects the HD2? I have installed the wifi tethering app that was in the European ROM and it works fine, but I was curious how T-mobile is going to detect/impose the tethering fee. Does anyone have any info on this?
I do not know of any technology that can detect a tether other than offiical carrier tether application. I doubt they could detect it because you are using a 3rd party app, so all cumulative data usage would be viewed as if it was just normal browsing/download etc. EDIT* : Normal browsing/downloading on the phones browser that is...just to clarify.
From what I understand, the tethering package is going to be just for people that tether, IE, if your device isn't tethered, then you won't be able to use data...only if it is psyically tethered to a PC will you be able to actually access data.
The HD2 should not be affected by this as it had tethering before this plan came in and it is intergrated into the OS. Tmobile typically grandfathers users in so since we all signed up for this data plan before this change came about, we should not have any issues.

They can easily detect that you are tethering because of where the data is coming from.
When you use your phone's browser, most sites default to the mobile version because your phone is reporting what it is and what browser you are running. (although with IE for example you can tell it to preset desktop pages).
When you tether, you get the desktop versions of the site because your browswer is reporting a desktop OS and browswer and is presented with the proper page.
Just something to think about........

For t-mobile to sniff your packets to detect that is likely against the law and there's nothing stopping you from editing the user agent string in your browser to make it look like a mobile browser
Its one thing for a customer to break TOS by tethering, at most you are breaking civil contract law, all TMO could do is terminate your contract or maybe sue you in civil court for breech of contract, they likely would not go that route.
However for them to start sniffing customers packets would be breaking CRIMINAL law
There is also nothing to stop a mobile browser from reporting itself as a desktop browser by user agent string to make a site load a "desktop experience" In no way is editing your user agent string against any kind of law!
The user agent string is really about the only way tmobile could detect tethering other than having a rigged tethering app, like it sounds like the android platform has. There is no kind of special flag set on TCP/IP packets that signify that they came from the phone or a tethered laptop, tablet, etc!
it is not against the law for t-mobile to packet sniff what goes on on their network. when you sign up for service, you agree to their terms........
I could be way off but I don't think there plan is to charge for just using tethering. The data cap on the current plans are 5gbs and after that you are slowed to edge speeds. I think with the tethering plan it is for a much higher if not unlimited data cap.

I can confirm the tethering restriction is in place for me constantly now.
I have a hd2, tmobile usa, custom rom, using usb w/the Internet Sharing app.
i was just kicked off tethering tonight and all my desktop browser requests went to the tmobile 'you must buy a tether plan' page.
I disconnected, reconnected, same thing. I am nowhere near even 1GB in data usage this month.
Only way that's fixed it so far is changing my t-mobile data connection to use internet2.voicestream.com instead of epc.tmobile.com

Changing to a mobile browser assures access, but limits the browsing experience on some pages.
Lets see how long it takes them to ban this nice hybird useragent.

have you tried a tether app off the marketplace such as WMVrouter? The internet sharing app included with the software was offiically included.

nope. haven't been able to get any wifi router stuff to work in the last couple rom revisions.
remember, i'm on custom Energy rom, not tmobile official.

Works for me, too, and I'm using a custom Rom.
Same here...been tethering for the last 20 minutes no problem. WiFi and USB both work.
Mine works..built in internet sharing app, energy rom.

Tom Codon wifi router cab seems to be the working app, and not the HTC Wifi Router App for WinMo. They may have block used of HTC's app. What do you guys think?
