I'm from Brazil and having issues with Nexus S since I bought it.
Before, I was with KB1 radio and could not have GPS fixed and was losing signal several times a day.
So, I updated to KB3 and it fixed the GPS issue but the network signal issue remains or even got worse.
I'm losing the network signal more than 20 times a day and the only solution are reboot.
Could someone help me please?

it could possibly be the signal towers, most likely it is.
you can also try to flash back to a stock ROM + stock Radio and see if it fix itself up
Can I put the Galaxy S radio in Nexus S? Because we have Galaxy S here in Brazil.

very simply... no.
try the JK8 radio? or try flashing a custom ROM to see if its a firmware related problem
also verify your KB3/KB1 packages with MD5 hash to verify its 100%
I'm having that problem also in my nexus S and on my wifes Galaxy S
BOTH are stock roms. Really weird. It enters like 1 or 2 times a day in "Emergency call only mode". Weird thing is: signal bars are FULL but emergecy only text on my lockscreen.
My carrier: VIVO, são paulo, Brazil.

The same here and the same carrier. But I'm using custom ROM and Kernel.
Updated back to KB1.
Results:
Network ok.
Losing 3g all the time.
No GPS fix.
Try to use a custom rom, like cyanogen, it's works grate for me with my nexus in Brazil.

I'm using CM 7 stable.
It's a radio issue for sure.
Nexus S is coming to Brazil next month. Let's see which radio it will use here.
Its really cool seeing us brazilians talking here... You know, I dont have these problems at all but sometimes the 3g bars greys and than reconnect again. This just irritates me when on youtube, when streaming is interrupted.
Abracos,
Thanks

Hi,
You are at Oi, and we are at VIVO. MAybe it's a issue with VIVO carrier.
Here in Rio, using TIM.
Sometimes I get signal lost, but it comes back without needing a reboot.
At work, 3G signal is very unstable. Leaving my Nexus at the same place/position, I get two bars of 3G signal, then suddenly full EDGE signal, then it comes back to 3G.
At home, I get 3G all the time.
There's another thing I've noticed: sometimes when I receive or make a call, after I hang up I lose connection (3G or EDGE). It takes about 10 to 15 seconds to recover it.
I have a Nexus S i9020, 2.3.3 stock rom and radio.
We have to know if that happens in the US. If yes it is our carriers, if not it is our basebands.
Im going to leave oi because the 3g speeds are horrible the max i got was 1030kbps. At Vivo speeds can be 2 times (Or more) better!!!

Bad news for me: I've tried today all radio baseband avaible in XDA and all of them I got signal lost during the day. The worst KB3, K8, K1. In this order.
I don't know what more can I try.
If It won't be fixed soon, I'm sure my next phone will be a iphone 5. I love Android but can't deal with their bugs.
This is issue of the VIVO in some estates like Sao Paulo in a lot of phone models. They just knows about it, and they are correcting this issue.

But why only by rebooting the phone whe can get again the signal. Signal drop is a carrier/network issue but cannot reconnet to network it's a phone issue.

Remembering my ancient knowledge about cellular networks, a cellphone sends a registering signal to the radio-base station from time to time. If the RBS doesn't acknowledge this, this cellphone will lose signal. When you turn off the phone and turn it on, you are forcing a registering. Maybe then the RBS registers the phone, and then you get signal.
What I'm trying to say is that maybe it's not a cellphone issue, maybe it's an operator issue.
Have you tried using another phone with your SIM? Do that and check what happens.

Yes. Before the Nexus S I had a Motorola Milestone and It never happend.
When it lose the singal, the Nexus S can identify the RBS but cannot register. Even If I restart the radio with an app or swtiching to airplane mode and switching again to normal mode, It can't register. What the diference of restart the radio or reboot the phone? Is it not the same "force"?
Hi, not a big problem as I am normally on wifi but I've noticed that my GSII is constantly dropping of HSDPA every few seconds and if I do a speed test it only gets around 300kbps.
Now I have an LG Optimus on the same network, same room and that stays on HSDPA and gets around 1800kbps on downloads.
Any idea what would cause this?

Don't have another phone here right now to test against but just did a couple of tests with speedtest.net app
Download/Upload
2500kbps/1967kbps
1422kbps/2967kbps
6192kbps/2883kbps
2896kbps/2608kbps
Seems to work just fine here at least. Granted this is at a place with good HSDPA coverage.
Sorry to tell you that but it seems like a bug in the phone, i do have the same issue, i surfed the couple of forums and the problem is spreading, hoping it's not a hardware issue.

Hmmm. I hope this can be sorted with a software update.

I think it's a network restriction. People in another thread were having similar problems with buying the handset and the contract separately meaning the data plan they were on was only at 300kbps.
If you've got another handset that gets a higher speed, switch the sim cards and see if that changes anything.
My phone will only download around 360kbps but will upload at 1mb, so puzzled as to why it would be a network restriction (hoping it is as I'm not happy and still within my 14 day cooling period) ringing o2 later...

No, it's not a network restriction. Not on Three anyway. I've just taken the PAYG SIM out of my LG which is getting around 1800kbps and put it in the Galaxy SII and it now only gets 64kbps!!! It's constantly flickering between 3G and HSDPA. It's definitely a phone issue.
i had posted in the other thread about how it switches down to 3G when it's not being used and instantly switch over to H+ when in use. There were no performance issues
Also on AT&T network, when it's first started/activated it took a little bit of time before network performance improved both on day one and when i switched over to an unlimited data plan
Oh I forgot to mention. I reported this issue to Samsung yesterday but don't hold your breath!
The man I spoke to didn't seem to understand what I was saying and when I advised him that there were many similar problems and issues being faced by people on this forum, he simply stated that he had never heard of the site. I gave him the web address but doubt they will ever look in to it.
If your facing this issue, then I would ring them and report it. That's the only way they are going to find out about the issue.
Normal behaviour for it to sit on 3G, only switches to H+ once it's in full flow.
This usually impacts speedtests and such.
Best way to test is to download a file off a fast server.
Same thing use to happen with my Desire.

I have numerous 3G devices here and none of them cuts of HSDPA so erratically. If I start to stream AudioGalaxy on my LG Android, the HSDPA stays on as does my Huawei MiFi. The Galaxy S II is dropping connection every few seconds.
It doesn't make sense for two Android phones in the same room with the same network to get completely different speeds. Maybe a small difference but to get one having 1800kbps and the other 64kbps shows there is a problem.
I've just updated the phone to KE2 and it's made no difference. Will have to wait to see what Samsung say.

How strong is the signal in dB or just bars whe nit switches around between 3G and H/H+?
That last sentence - did you contact Samsung with the problem and are waiting for their reply? thanks

Hey guys I have an imported sgs2 here in Canada and hopeing to get my hands on the bell modem.
Let me know if someone can rip it.
Sent from Samsung Galaxy S2 on TELUS.
Same here. A Bell modem will be much appreciated. I'm just running on XXKE4 and I'm suffering from the 3G/H+ disconnection problem. Tried a few other modems but still doesn't seem to help.
I'm also getting the intermittent 3G/H+ switching. Sometimes even on 3G, I get no data and it times out.
I'm on Fido network.
I have modem XXKE7 and kernal XWKF3.
Lol i will be so funny when you finally get bell modem and realise that it still switches between 3g and h+ periodically.
Lmfao h+ turns on to indicate the data is active youre still on 3g. That is your background apps pooling data periodically or when browser loads the page it will revert to 3g icon till you press next link and here we go again.
For disconects upgrade to xxkg2 modem and after that blame your network.
Im running on fido in gta just fine except fir rogers coverage gapps in cetrain areas for example in dixie/rathburn area youll get full 3g signal but data is very slow and at times nonexistant.
Sent from my GT-I9100
I used an unlocked UK GS2 on Telus, and the only trouble I've had is with disconnections, I realized the phone switches between H+,H, and 3G to save battery.
It seems leading up the release of the GS2 by Bell changes must have been made to the RAN as the data disconnection problem happens a lot less frequently than it used to.
Although I've used it on Rogers with no issues so hopefully the newer firmware totally removes the issue for me on Telus.
I am getting a lot of disconnects (total disconnect with restart) with KG2 on Bell in Toronto. KG1 seemed a lot more solid.
Will see what modem bell launches with tomorrow - somehow I don't think it will be KG2
Since I've been running the KG2 modem it seems to be a bit better.
But a proper radio from bell will be the best.

Disabling fast dormancy at first appears to work for me but then after some time it dropped its connection to the tower, however with fast dormancy disabled it seems to regain it's data connection much faster after the drop when compared to before.
Also I've noticed that the speedtest results are double with fast dormancy disabled and it seems to be using a bit more battery.
I have a problem with using this phone on Telus. Get a script error and it looses data and then signal all together and it happens about 5 times a day. Anything I can do?

There are no special carrier branded radios, just try some till you find one that works for you in your area.
And the phone will swap between 3g and h as 3g uses less power the h so it's best to only kick upto it when needed

More like we are waiting for a region (Canada/NA) specific radio that would work well. I've just flashed KG3 (Cognition 1.3) for a day...so far I have not detected the old 3G/H+ disconnection problem that I've suffered from KE4 - KE7.
Ya kg3 runs fine but I'd like to have the bell one if possible.

Hey everyone,
I just bought a refurbished Nexus S for $200. I thought it was a pretty good deal. Loving the phone so far. However, last night I lost data services. The signal bars which is normally green was "greyed" out. I tried the web browser, twitter and nothing was working. Eventually I got data back in about 30 mins or so. I didn't think anything of it. Well, it happened again today. Signal bars were greyed out again. I have less than 14 days to return/exchange my device. Should I exchange it? Is this a known issue with the Nexus S? Just an FYI, I have 2 lines and data is working fine on my BlackBerry.
I'm running stock OS, 2.3.6
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Hate to break it to you but one of the few bad things about this phone is its reception. Check what radio version. Your on. If it doesn't say ke1, go on peter alfonsos web site and download the ke1 radio and flash it through cwm. See if that helps.

I'm assuming that requires me to root the phone? So if I choose not to root my phone I'm going to have this ongoing issue?
rooting and installing this radio won't necessarily help. I have the I9020A with the newest radio and i do have this problem sometimes - I'm losing signal and it recovers in random time. the weirdest thing is that I can find my network when I'm searching manually for networks. You are on rogers (based on your avatar), so i can only guess we have the same model. My brother has the I9020A also, and he has similar yet different problem - when he lost signal due to no reception areas, he has to go into airplane mode and back to normal to recover the signal. he also has the newest radio (UCKF).
You should also notice that rooting your phone will make you lose your warranty, and i guess that also the the right to exchange it.
Yes the model I have is the same as your brother's. I know in general Samsung has bad radios. Is it because it's made by Samsung or is it particular to the Nexus S? I have been reading the same issues with the Galaxy Nexus, so I'm guessing it's Samsung.
I don't plan on rooting it because I know it will void the warranty and I won't be able to return/exchange it.

If you dial *#*#4636#*#* when this happens and you go into phone information, do you see it connected?

Could be you only have full bars of 2G data speed. You are either being throttled for excessive use from your carrier or your carrier only has 2G speeds where you live. Where I work the entire county only has 2G Edge speeds from AT&T even though their coverage map shows 3G for the area. Check your data type and speeds with an app like Network Signal info.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.telnet&hl=en
Happens to me a lot as well. I show full 4g and yet everything times out and wont load because data is so slow. I'm also in a good coverage area where i get 12-14 Mbps speed with other phones and when this one is acting normal.

The towers you are connecting to are probably overloaded. Thin of them as a wireless access point at your house with 1 internet line. If too many connect to and use that line, the connection gets slower. Would be nice if cell providers posted tower stats in your area. Would save a lot of angry calls

Glad im not the only one suffering.. I didnt really have the problem on stock so much.. just since unlocking and flashing new roms.
To the person who mentioned carrier throttling, its certainly not that as one minute i'll get full speed and the next (youtube for example) will just stop and start saying no signal retry and then if i turn the phone off and back on again it will work. How can a carrier throttle you when you only have a 2Gb usage limit and then they charge you afterwards that makes no sense.
Also its not a 2G problem as Signal checker shows 3G and also now EE all around my area. Besides my wife's S3 on the same network is getting full speeds where im not or anything even though im apparently at full strength H
I hope this gets sorted soon as its also affecting calls.. I'll have what looks like full signal while playing a game then suddenly a text to say someone tried ringing me like 3 minutes before!!
probably switching from HSDPA to HSPA+.
did you notice a H on top of your signal bar, that switches to H+ when the lag is over?
I have had this problem for a long time, since I got my Galaxy Nexus and now again on my Nexus 4, and finally got so fed up that I have been testing it all day and getting screenshots ready to make my own post about this so I am pretty relieved to see this post!
I live in Philadelphia and use T-Mobile. I have had T-Mobile here for years and never had this problem before. When they upgraded to 3G I had amazing speed boosts and when they did HSPA+ it got even better but that was on a G1/G2. On my Nexus phones the internet is damn near unusable in center city but what is so odd about it is that in my Google searches about the problem I can only seem to find posts raving about T-Mobile in the city and how Philly keeps getting improvements including the new improved 1900Mhz HSPA+42 but I have never even seen my Nexus 4 on the +42 network the best it goes to is +15 and even that makes no difference because the internet is so slow and unrelaible that unless I am on Wifi, my phone just sits in my pocket useless.
I'm really at my wits end about this and no one, Google or T-Mobile seems to take responsibility or have any advice on how to fix it except the pointless factory reset.
I've seen a brief mention on XDA about a fast.tmobile.com APN and I changed to that and I'd like to imagine that it showed some type of improvements but certainly not with data speeds/latency/integrity of connection. If anything, it may have improved signal 'strength' (used lightly because regardless of what my strength is listed as the connection sucks.
To be clear, I am connected to HSPA and HSPA+ when the connection is being used, like it should, but these are the best speeds I managed to get throughout the day today as I moved around campus trying different spots.
Please, someone have advice!!

I am using the stock kernel, stock radio although not the stock ROM. I am pretty sure I had this problem before I rooted (I say pretty sure to be conservative with my answer since I am not 100% sure but I am definitely 90%)
Is anyone confident about their knowledge regarding APN settings? I have seen like 15 different configurations for T-Mobile's APN and have no idea which one to try and would prefer not to just go through them one by one -- I've got things to do!

Again.. I'm pretty sure i didn't have this problem while on stock but i could be wrong. My GNex was exactly the same. And I'm on orange UK so completely different network to the T-Mobile USA so surely can't be random that we're both having the same problems

I had the same slowness over cellular, 9kbps or so. I changed APN's, rebooted and just got 2463kbps.

I'm on stock 4.2.1. Phone is rooted and boot loader unlocked. For about two days now I'm having signal drops from 4bars, then greyed out 4 bars and jumps between H to 3G. Settings for LTE revert to WCDMA every time I lose reception. Also dialer crashes/ force closes if I have an incoming call and sends all calls to voicemail. I can dial out but at the end of my calls when I go to hang up I see the popup that phone process crashed.
My carrier is Bell Canada and the phone worked fine for about 10 days before this started happening.
Any tips or advice to help me out is appreciated. Thanks.
