Here's the background: I have a droid x, rooted with the latest z4root. Previously deleted some of the bloat (and yes, completely deleted with no backup).
As most of you know, I cannot use the official ota update from verizon (continually fails to install whether I keep root on or off). Currently have system version 2.3.15 mb810 verizon.en.us and (if it means anything), android version 2.2.
To further complicate this, I have no access to any kind of windows machine, pure Mac only.
Here's the $ 64,000 question; can I simply revert to a factory wipe (to reload all the crap I deleted), update via the official update and then reroot via z4root? Do I need to make a backup of some sort and if so, using what? Or, am I going to lose all data to date?
Any help will be greatly appreciated by this very non-technical, wanna-be rooter.
Please, no flames regarding the winbloze ...
Again, thanks in advance if you have the patience to try and help me. I'm terrified of bricking my phone.

PMs are fine, too

Factory reset will only delete user data, it doesn't reinstall stock apps.
You will lose your apps and data with this method, but it's the cleanest way to do it. If you choose not to wipe data you may end up with an unstable phone. To be honest since you're coming from a stock image rather than one of the "roms" around here you might be able to get away with it. Just skip step 6. I'm still going to go with the clean route though.
Make sure your phone is fully charged!
1) Get Titanium Backup and back up all your app data.
2) Get Droid X Bootstrapper and install it.
3) Get Rom Manager, goto Download Roms and get the stock 2.2 image. Remember where it downloads to!
4) Go into Droid X Bootstrapper and reboot into (clockworkmod) recovery. In recovery you use the volume up/down keys to go up/down, the camera key to select and the back button to go back.
5) In recovery go into backup and restore, and make a backup. When it's done hit the back button to get to the main menu.
6) Choose to wipe data and then also wipe cache.
7) Go into mounts and storage, mount system and data (you'll know they are mounted because the option will now say "unmount system")
8) Choose install zip from SD card, and pick the image that Rom Manager downloaded.
9) Reboot system
If you get stuck in a boot loop, pull the battery out. Put the battery back in, and then hold down the home and power buttons until a triangle with an exclamation point pops up. Press the search button to get into the stock recovery. Wipe data/cache.
Try the sbf file for your version. Way more simple than the post above and you will be able to upgrade with the new OTA.

Why bother getting back to a stock .15 build in order to update when you can just go straight to the 2.3.340 and get the same result quicker without having to unroot and then reroot?
My Droid World has all of the necessary pieces in zip files to upgrade the bootloader, kernel, radio, and system. Just flash them in the order that they appear on the post restart between each update.

They aren't sbf files so it doesn't matter, it can be done entirely from the phone. It's just a series of zip file that need to placed on the sd card and installed via clockwork recovery.
Whoops! That's what I get for only reading the first half of your post

I've downloaded all the files and moved them to my SD card. When I reboot into recovery and select update.zip I get an error saying it can't find the file. I don't see update.zip anywhere on my SD card. Do I need to have this on my card before installing the .zip files?
Are you using the droid x bootstrapper and rebooting into recovery , also mounting system?

use the "choose zip file" option instead of the "update zip file" option.
seems the same but is different .

Hello all.
the other day i installed [ROM] VIPERrom v1.0.2. The install went great, just as any other ROM install I've done in the past. Today i wanted to try my luck with quantum but ran into a road block.
every time i boot into manual recovery mode to run the update.zip to access clockwork i get a very weird error i cant seem to figure out. Google really hasn't
been much help either.
When i hit update.zip i get:
E:can't mount sdcard/dev/block/vold/179:1 (no such file on directory)
Then another error saying the E:/update.zip is invalid or something along those lines.
I want to say this might have something to do with file structure change in viperrom maybe? Recovery is still 2e and i always boot to manual.... The phone and ROM still functions fine, i just want to try quantum or go back to baked snacks or another 2.1 variant for battery life....
I have reformatted my sd after backing up to my pc... no dice
Is a possible remedy to try and flash back to stock di18? Or could that cause issues...? what about odin?
for anyone else who happens upon this problem, just flash back to a stock release with odin.
Fixed me right up!
Thanks for the tools devs!
While you can go the Odin route, a simpler method would be to go to CWM recovery, factory reset at least 3x, clear cache at least 3x, and instead of selecting "update.zip" choose "install zip from sd card" then navigate to the ROM you want. Since you are changing ROM's all together it is not an update.

i had the same exact problem couple days ago.. and fix it the same way as you hahaha.
One thing i dont understand though guys, yall said we can just install from zip where i do not see that option straight up.
All you see is reboot, apply sdcard update.zip, wipe data and wipe cache. How did yall directly go to install from zip? am i missing something?
Thanks!
I think everyone here is talking about the update.zip from the normal recovery.
For me i always have to hit apply update.zip in normal recovery to get to clockwork unless i use rom manager.
Sounds like you guys are talking about the stock recovery, not clockwork. To be clear, clockwork recovery is loaded by powering on the phone while holding the vol. down and camera buttons at the same time. If you are in the right recovery you will see the option you seek!
Sent from my Epic using XDA App.
thanks all for the replies. i was talking about the stock recovery...
Any time i want into clockwork i do the vol d+camera+power combination.
That take me to manual stock recovery where i load an update.zip to access clockwork....
Stock wouldnt let me load clockwork anymore... Odin fixed it but this raises another question for me....
Do i have clockwork set up correctly? Should the button combo take me straight to clockwork?
Sorry for being a noob guys and thanks for the help!
I'm out and about and can't link it but noobnl posted a redirect fix that let's quickboot and root manager take you straight to clockwork. It bypasses the stock recovery thus no need for the update.zip anymore. I think that's what you need...rom manager is supposed to work with it too I believe.

If you have the current version of cw then the three button boot should take you directly to it. Not sure what the problem is, maybe someone more experienced than me will know.
I used the windows one click root method and I have root, however my droid 2 will not boot to CW recovery from ROM Manager.
I have scanned and did not see an answer..

You need to download bootstrap recovery to boot into recovery
The D2 has a locked bootloader (thanks efuse) which prevents us from installing a custom recover. The bootstrap recovery is the only way to get to clockwork (I don't really know how it works cause im not a dev, but it does so thats all i need! lol).
So, as stated above, just download the bootstrap recovery, install and run it, hit bootstrap recovery (will be prompted to give superuser) and wait till it says success (should just be a few seconds), then hit reboot recovery and flash away!
Note* I believe you only have to hit bootstrap recovery once, then you can just hit reboot recovery when you need to flash. (I think after you flash a new rom you will have to hit bootstrap recovery again though but i could be wrong on that)
Thanks. Bootstrap worked great. Quick question though, how do you do custom ROMs?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Download the rom you want and put it on the sd card.
1: Boot into recovery via bootstrap.
2: Do a backup.
3: Now, go to the mount option and be sure data and cache are mounted.
4: Now wipe data and cache, then go to advanced and wipe dalvik and battery stats.
5: Go back and make sure everything is still mounted.
6: Go back to main menu and select install from sd card.
7. Select choose zip from sd card
8. Scroll down till you see your rom and select it then select yes. and wait for it to complete.
9. Reboot the phone and enjoy your new rom. (Booting the phone for the first time after flashing a new rom can take a few minutes so be patient.)

is there still anyone working on cracking the bootloader on the droid2.. droidx and milestones?
Cracking the bootloader seems unlikely. Unless a leak happens it's highly unlikely that a brute force method with crack it (order of magnitude is in years beyond the life of the universe).
aliasxerog is working on instead hijacking the boot process with a custom init that will hot swap a new kernel. In theory this should work just fine since the bootloader can load any kernel it wants and then hands off the rest of the boot process to init. What happens from there is out of Motorola's (and eFuse's) hands.
What is the best/easiest method to return to out of the box stock and how do you do it?
-I've never used sbf.
-I have a nandroid backup of stock ota 2.2.1 but reverting back to it still leaves somethings like the liberty text when first booting up.
-To my understanding madderstock is a .zip file that you just flash the same a rom. Is that correct?
-Is there something better/easier?
Thanks

SBF is generally the most "100%" way to get completely back to stock... However if you are more comfortable flashing a zip file, then maderstcok is the way to go... Does the same thing as the 2.3.340 system only sbf.

It kind depends on the situation that you are in. If you have only messed up the /system portion of the phone, then flashing the zip is easier for those who aren't super android savvy. You just run the zip file, and when it finishes, it achieves the same result as the sbf, but that is only for the /system portion of the phone.
The reason I say the SBF is the best way to "100%" redo your phone is the sbf is an official moto file. If you download the latest full sbf, it completely wipes your current phone image and then loads the default image on the phone, leaving no remains of you phone prior to the sbf.
That make a little more sense?
Ya that's great, thanks. And thanks for the video Owenbeals.

maderstcok does more them just the system folder, it just doesn't do it the same way as SBF does (from the devs that made it: This is the FULL, OTA 2.3.340 - contains radio, kernel, and all other updates, even those EXCLUDED by the 2.3.340 system only sbf.).
If you can reboot into bootstrap recovery maderstcok is fine, if not the SBF may still be able to fix your phone. Just remember if you flash maderstcok or sbf you still have to reboot into recovery and wipe your phone for it to be bootable again.
for more info on the maderstcok:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-rooted-help/112152-maderstcok-ota-2-3-340-update-zip.html
Still up to you which you use but either should get it done the say way.
PS: Its a good idea to have maderstcok, z4root, the SBF, and RDS lite on your SD card incase your phone gets messed up and your not at your primary pc.
Instructions:
Using the Droid X Bootstrapper make a backup. (more information here)
Browse (using volume buttons) to "install zip from sdcard" and select it with the camera button.
Select "choose zip from sdcard".
Select "maderstcok340.zip"
Confirm the install.
Be patient, wait for the install to finish.
Reboot the Droid X. DO NOTHING ELSE IN CLOCKWORKMOD!!!!!!!
Activate the phone with VZW (more instructions below).
If you attempt to create a backup or flash a rom post maderstcok installation you're going to have a paperweight. This seems to be because maderstcok removes root and the clockworkmod recovery area, so it doesn't like you playing around in there. Re-root and reinstall the bootstrapper, then create a backup or flash a new rom, DON'T DO IT BEFORE REBOOTING THE DX AFTER ISNTALL.
Formatting Data and Cache is optional; however, if you want a really clean install do so. If you factory reset you'll be forced to activate the phone automatically while if you don't you'll have to follow the quick and dirty activation instructions below - the choice is ultimately yours.
EDIT: coming from ANY non-blur based ROM and doing Maderstcok is guaranteed to bootloop due to mismatch in framework without a data/cache wipe
__________________________________ These are the instructions for the maderstcok. In the second to last paragraph it says that if you want a really clean install you should format data and cache. When is this step performed? The last step in the list of instructions after flashing the .zip is to reboot NOT DOING ANYTHING ELSE IN CLOCKWORKMOD. So before I reboot should i wipe data and cache or do I need to re-root, run bootstrap recovery, and then wipe data and cache?

I am a total noob and am having trouble installing CyanogenMod onto my Nexus S 4G. I barely rooted the darn thing, and I am using a guide that involves ROM Manager. It says I have to mount the SD card using ROM Manager, but I can't figure out how to. If there is a better way to install CyanogenMod, please tell me, because all the guides I have been finding are way too technical for me to understand, and I have been trying. If you already have clock work then all you have to do is drag and drop cyanogen into the root of your sd card. Then flash through clock work.

Can you explain this part more? Is this the part of the guide that says "make a nandroid backup"?
1. Mount USB and drag and drop cm7 zip & Google apps into root of SD card.
2. Turn off nexus.
3. Boot into fastboot by holding volume up and then power button.
4. In fastboot go to recovery (power button is used as enter button, volume buttons represent up and down)
5. In recovery go to backup and restore and back up your current rom.
6. Go back and then wipe data factory reset and also wipe cache.
7. Go to advanced -> Wipe delvik cache.
8. Go back and then go to install zip from SD, find cm7 flash it, then flash Google apps. You can flash kernel right now if you want.
Hope this clears anything up

That means you don't have Clockwork recovery installed. You need to download the latest Clockwork recovery image and place it in the tools folder of your Android SDK Folder(wherever you placed it). Then press shift and right click on the tools folder and select "open command prompt here". Then boot your phone into bootloader by pressing volume up and power button at the same time. Connect your phone to your computer via usb cable and in the command prompt you opened type: fastboot flash recovery name of recovery image here.img and press enter and you will see in the command prompt window it will say sending image. When it is done scroll down to recovery on your phone using the volume buttons and press power to enter. Your phone will reboot into Clockwork recovery and from there you can continue on the previous posts steps. Hope this helps. You can download the latest Clockwork by going to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213 and clicking on the brown "CWM Recovery" under 'How to: Root the Nexus S 4G'.
well I'm pretty sure I do have clockwork because there's a folder on my phone that is called clockworkmod, and I did root the phone successfully at the very least, but I'll try putting a new one there.

Alright here is a little run down on whats going on with your ns4g, you probably already flash clockworkmod on your nexus, but what samsung did was that it will try to revert back to the stock recovery. So what you have to do is flash Clockworkmod again to make it stick. Honestly it is good that it doesn't stick because then it would be easier to unroot the phone.
So now you have 2 different options on how to flash clockworkmod. 1) you can do it through fastboot but you have to have adb set up. I'm not sure what method you used to root your phone so i am just assuming.
2) you can download rom manager and flash clockwork through there. (Honestly i haven't done it through this method so i cant tell you of the pros or cons that are attributed with this).
NOTE: If you dont have super user yet it would be a prime time to flash it once you got CWM going.
For me, I only needed to flash clock work twice through fastboot in order to make it stick.
Good luck.
The guide I originally was using for this had me using rom manager, but it kept telling me I had to mount the SD card even though it was shown up in my computer.
If I were to flash clockwork again with adb setup, how would I do that? Sorry to be so asky, I just want this process to end correctly.
You have to set up adb if you don't have it already, go to ns4g development and go to vandam's thread that has all the list of rom's and rooting guides. Check out wolverines rooting guide, he goes indepth on how to set up adb. It make take awhile to set up but learning how to work in fastboot is essential in rooting the nexus.
Good luck

Actually if you are updating from different versions of the same rom, you don't need to wipe anything, you just flash it.
Now that I have my Bravo back from the factory for repairs, I have two things I'd really like to accomplish with it, but am not feeling nearly confident or knowledgeable enough to go ahead, so any help you all may lend would be most appreciated.
1. My phone is rooted and running Eclair; I have not attempted updating to Froyo because, as I understand it, doing so is not possible on a rooted phone. Is that correct? To compound things, I have been unable to unroot this phone using SuperOneClick (which is how I rooted it originally), so on that front I'm stuck. I did do a stock restore, but all that did was remove the non-stock apps, leaving Superuser still installed.
2. I have bought BandroidX's Bravo Recovery from the market, but again, don't really have a clue how I would best use it to eventually flash his custom ROM. So, if anyone here would be willing to help me out through my maze, I'd be most grateful.
Well, not that anyone was going to actually reply, but never mind. My searching shows that several Bravos have been bricked when either using Bravo Recovery, or the custom ROM. I'll just keep it as is and my next Android phone will get modded.
Let me help you, but please simplify your request its too much to read.
My native language is not english and I get tired and also I lose the idea of what you are trying to say.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: I read it all , well you just need to download the SBF file which is stock froyo and flash it with RSD Lite.
Of course you will lose all your data and everything you have installed on your phone. Then you can begin from 0 and do whatever you want.
Can you make me a favor please? download Sideloader Enabler for Bravo from the market and rip it (I mean copy it to your phone or PC) and upload it please, I cant do it because I live outside US.
Thanks.
Okay i can give you fairly simple to follow instructions if you want to flash a ROM to your phone. I highly recommended that you try Bandroidx's bravo RC2 rom, it is a smaller file and you'll see a major speed improvement over eclair.
1. make 100% sure you are actually rooted. (download a root only app and see if it successfully gains root access when you open it).
2. download the zipped file of whatever rom you want to use
3. plug in your phone and copy your zipped file to your phones sdcard
4. open bandroidx's recovery app, press the bootstrap recovery option, let it do its thing. once its successful go ahead and hit the reboot recovery option.
5. after it boots you'll now be in a small text menu with some different options, scroll down to the advanced option (using volume keys) and select it with the power key, then scroll to wipe dalvik cache. let it finish, head back to the main menu.
6. now select wipe cache partition, let it finish
7. now select wipe data/factory reset, let it finish
8. now select install zip from sdcard, you'll be presented with your sdcard contents, locate the zipped file that you copied earlier and select it. Let it do its thing.
9. once its completely finished you can select reboot system now
your phone will reboot normally now... GIVE IT TIME, this first boot can take up to like 10 min. You'll be fine if you follow these instructions.
*if you mess something up and your phone doesn't boot up or bootloops, dont panic. post it up and i can give you instructions on flashing back to stock with RSD lite.

Did you do anything? I haven't seen or heard of one of our Bravo's still on Eclair. Wow. The times. Above anything I would say if you can just do a OTA Update.
