How to set up your phone for free calling - Vibrant General

Ill be in Colombia this time 2mrw, and was wondering how I can set up my phone to make free cals, even if its only locally, without having to get a new sim... any suggestions??
Running Axura 2.1

There are lots of ways to at least get very cheap calling if you're using wifi. If you're using local cell towers, not so much.

Yeah I kno, but how.. wat do I need to do.. I searched and didn't find much

I kind of new at it but im using Google voice. Getting free text messages now. Might want to check it out

Use Sipdroid with Google Voice. Google it. There's a delay and the call quality is sh*tty, but using SIP and something like GV is pretty much the only way.

You get the PIN code when Google calls your phone. You can't sign up for it without a US phone number.

I'm not receiving any calls from Google when trying to open the Google voice. maybe because my text messaging is blocked and i always receive that notification whenever opening GV.

Pretty cool, so is this meant to be used on your PC? Or can you place calls for free using gmail on your phone?
I just saw this in my email and had to try it out!
It's pretty neat!
can't wait until we get in on our phones!!!
I've had the google voice phone number on my G1 for about a year and the match ing google voice app. And now have it on my Vibrant. It is really nice.

This is meant to be used on the PC. If you already have google voice, then you just install the new video chat add-on (linked to in first post) and you're all set.
Anyone you call will see your google voice number pop up. You can put in a phone number or the name of one of your google contacts.
This is a good way to communicate with people without having to leave your phone on speaker or break your stride if you're working on the computer.
pretty sweet...doubt Google's going to bring it to phones though and upset the apple cart with carriers
just wanted to know if incoming calls through your google number is free as well?
i know that outbound calls are free through data, but what about incoming calls in which your google voice number is forwarded to your mobile phone when someone calls your google voice number?
is that free or there is charge for that?
thanks a lot , i wish someone could give some clarification on this

Call your GV # from your house phone and find out. I remember trying it out like 2 days ago, I think it uses your carrier's plan minutes.

yes it does uses the airtime minutes, otherwise, it wouldnt have reflected in my recent activity status on my tmobile account.

Anyone here use You Mail on their Atrix?

If so have you got it to work on your phone, I set it up as I did on my Tilt 2 and all seemed fine...
So today I get a voicemail and I dial my You Mail number and it says I have no messages
So I then call my number to be brought to the att voicemail box and my message is waiting in here
Any insight would help
Mine isnt having issues. Just tried it to be sure. Sounds like for some reason your att mailbox is in use now. Try resetting up youmail maybe?
I'm having the same problem
I set up YouMail but all my voicemails are still going to my old voicemail box. When I first installed it, it seemed to work fine and it downloaded some messages. But now all new messages go to the old voicemail box. Do anybody have any ideas?
i stumbled across (you mail) last night, got excited installed it, went to register and of course gotta have a US number for it to work. yet again Canadians no go.
EDIT: sorry for the rant. it has nothing to do with your questions, just saw the post and decided to reply.
I had to change the numbers in the call forwarding section of the phone settings. Did the same in the voicemail settings. Now when I push and hold "1" it dials YouMail.

This did not work I got
Call forwarding
Connection problem or invalid MMI code
You'll need to set it manually go to settings -> call settings -> call forwarding
You'll change: when busy, unanswered, unreachable
Use the number +17142043114

it's crazy... mine works, but i never set it up. i was using it on my iPhone 4, then started using the wp7 for a little bit and it was going to youmail. then i switched to my atrix and it continues to work w/o having to set it up again.
i'm guessing the quick code above changed my deposit number in at&t's system.
for the record: i did set it up on my i4, but haven't had to on any phone after.
Unless your call forwarding gets changed it should keep working.

Google voice integration.

Did anyone received a google email that reads as follow?
Hello, You have been invited to start enjoying the benefits of the Sprint integration before anyone else! We are interested in your feedback as we roll this out to the entire user base and have listed a link to a form where you can send feedback and/or questions
What are the benefits of this integration?
Don't know as I dropped that email in the bit bucket.

Here's a short video demonstration of it http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/google-voice-for-sprint-hands-on/
and the official sites:

I guess I've become a total Android/Google whore. I hope they buy Sprint and just bury all the other wireless companies XD
I just did recently, however I am still not sure if this has advantages over having the app. Its either all in or not. I still prefer being able to choose which way I dial out. Whats needed is an option to check off in contacts to force google voice as preferred # to use as dailing out.
The 'integration' feature seems to take away the option to use googlevoice as a way to seperate personal and business use of a single line...?

This service renders your sms/text applocation useless.
You muat use google voice app to recieve text.
Am i missing something? Does google voice have an api for the text? Is that possible to implement that into a sms app?

Voice Plus from the market. You put your contacts into groups in gmail on your pc, set google voice to always dial with google voice (using the widget) and then choose the group in Voice Plus. This is how I call delivery restaurants in my area It works perfectly. I forget about it most of the time.
You have to forward texts to your mobile and turn off notifications for google voice. I am using handcent with google voice and its perfect once I figured that out.
I like having my house phone and cell phone ring when I get a call.

So if we use the integration (just got my invite), we will only have the option of using one phone number? Just to be clear, I have my Sprint number and a separate GV number. If I go ahead with the integration, I have to choose which number I want to keep using?
So their finally making their move. I was warned about this some time ago.

+1 for Voice Plus. It works perfectly. I have no intention of giving up one of my two numbers when this little app makes everything seemless. The only thing I don't like (and this has nothing to do with voice plus) is that any call that is in any way routed through GV right now does not count as a mobile-to-mobile.

The only problem with this is Notifications for Voice Mail is affected too. Id like to retain notifications for VM but maybe they will add this in the future to disable notifications for the 2 services
As long as GV using my mimutes instead 3G I'm not impress.

until google bypasses POTS, gv calls will always be non m 2 m. this is because of the charges associated with POTS and mandated by federal laws.

You need to go online to remove google voice integration. If you are not receiving the calls, google voice is and you have misconfigured your phone. Go online to google.com/voice and revert those changes. Then uninstall the application from your phone. Should be fine after that.
My other suggestion would be to read everything when installing something on your phone, when you install google voice on the HTC evo or other google voice supported phones there is an option to merge with the google voice account or not, You should select SKIP and not continue. Sometimes people fail to read that part and this happens.
Good Luck!

What's the best way get Google Voice to work on an unactivated phone?

I have an HTC EVO (with a bad esn) that I'm using just on wifi - I'm using Google Voice and GrooveIP to make calls but without service I can't finish the Google voice setup - It needs an active # so that it can send a text.
My question is - Is there an easy way to get around this? I've looked around for answers and I've learned a little about SIP but it seems like there's got to be an easier way. The other thing I was thinking was to just flash it to cricket, activate service for an hour, activate GV and then cancel.
Anyone been through this already and have advice?
SIPAndroid might be useful. Back when I set it up it did not ask me for a confirmation SMS. I used the default provider that comes with the application.
The reason I am trying to finish activating GV on the phone is so I can text from the same GV # that I call from. Wouldn't going through a SIP service force me to use a different #?

No since you already have a phone # (your GV #), the SIP is just the connection between the phone line and the internet.
I take it your setting up through your computer? Stop what your doing. Its a pain in the butt. (I know from experience)
Just download the Google voice app and sign in using the email account used to set up your Google voice account. Takes like 2 min and no calling necessary

I just confirmed it on my phone. If you shutdown the radio but leave wifi on, GV will complain about being unable to place the call because of airplane mode. I'm using the network app to disable only the CDMA radio, all others (BT, WiMAX and Wifi) are enabled.
So yes, you MUST use a SIP to be able to use GV without the CDMA radio attempting to make a regular call.
I just remembered the name of the SIP app: SIPdroid
Thanks to fenixjn and the others in this thread. I got it going on my EVO 4g.
If u haven't figured out a way to set it up. use the internet. When it ask for a phone number use a landline number. After that u can use the google voice app like u wanted to. Hope that helps. After the activation call just unforward to that number and forward calls to gtalk or g chat. I forget exactly what the option is. I use groove IP to make and receive calls. I had sip Droid set up but it stopped working for me a few months ago. The money for groove IP is worth it. The calls are great quality. It has dropped calls on my a few times. But I can't complain for the ease of use and the low price.
Now I'm even more confused. I already set up the Google voice app and grooveIp and have been making and receiving calls just fine. My issue is having a number I can use to complete the Google voice app on my phone. The app wants to send me a confirmation text and since I have no service it cant. So now my question is how do I use SIPDroid to do that??
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
By the way if I wasn't clear - I'm only trying to get google voice fully on the phone so i can text over wifi too. If there's an easier way I'm all ears.
I used my home phone number to set up google voice(it is a vonage number now that I ported to them from my old land line company). I first set up the google voice on my computers and it went smoothly. I then took my EVO 4g (which does not have service) and connectected by wifi to the market and downloaded voice, it kept prompting me for a cell number and I didnt enter one but it did load google voice onto my phone. I then downloaded Sipdroid and used my Google Voice number and it handled everything. I can send and receieve text and can send and recieve calls. A friend did try to send me two picture files via the text messaging that would not come thru. I don't know if there are limitations on what you can send but the normal text messages come thru fine. The phone service works ok but the quality leaves something to be desired. I havent started trying to tweek that yet.
Thanks, I'll try it right now...

It can be done. I did it to mine. i cant remeber how cause its been a long time. Bit i thought all i did was add another number to gvoice on the computer. Then when it asked for comfermation it made a phone call to the number i had set up to forward it to. U may have to set up another gmail account just so u can get another gvoice number. Then use a number u can receive calls to ass the primary number. I'm gonna see if I can find the link I found the info for and post it for u. Don't be discouraged. It took me a while to figure out how to do it.
Thanks for all your help so far, I haven't got it working yet but I'm closer than I was

Hi- could you explain in a bit more detail how you got GV to use your Text+ to complete the GV registration? I am trying to do the same exact thing you did, but cannot get GV to "see" my Text+ number. Thanks for any help you can offer...
[added note] just realized my sig line is waaay out of date...sorry!
It's been awhile and I promptly forgot everything but here's what I remember - Text plus lets you send and receive texts for free and lets you receive voice calls for free. As far as I recall GV needs to send you a text? or possibly a voice message. I think I just entered my Text + number as the cell # in GV and it all worked out
