Couple Of Questions...

Hi foks,
I'm getting my Silver Xperia this Friday (Can't wait)
Got some questions.
1. Hows the Camera?
2. Hows the flash/flashlight?
3. Hows the speaker sound?
4. How is the sound quality trough 3.5mmjack? (Or does it depend on what ear pieces you use?)
5. Hows the battery life? I'm almost 24/7 on msn 3G in some cases H and my TyTN II starts in the morning with 100% and ends in de evening 50/45%. How is this on the Xperia?
6. Hows the scroll pad?
7. Hows the panel?
8. Hows the phone in general?
9. Xperia X1, or Touch HD???
I've used the Xperia for 2 hours a while ago (Demo) and coudn't test everything cause the software wasn't correct.

Take your time and read some posts on this board. You will see that all your questions are answered in detail.
Edit: What the hell I will answer them even if I don't own one yet (but I've read many posts here).
For a 3.2 megapixel camera it is good but seems average, competing with other phones that have more megapixels.
The Flash is a LED light and as all LED lights it fails to be a proper flash. It helps a tiny bit to give some light in dark areas.
Average, some people complain it is too quiet while others are okay with it.
The sound quality is quite good from the 3.5mm jack. If you have cheap earbuds it will sound bad. With better equipment you will always have better results. That's the case for all audio devices.
Battery life is excellent considering other phones. This is a major plus for the xperia.
For scrolling it is good, though some members are annoyed if used for directions (instead of the standard direction pad) because they find its behaviour erratic. You can calibrate it for your needs, with the sensitivity options or disable it completely.
Average. Some panels are quite good, others are just gimmicks. The transition from portrait to landscape seems a bit laggy. Other than that it seems to work okay. Unfortunately panels don't run in parallel, so when you change from the Radio panel to another FM-Radio stops.
The phone is pretty good although some people question its high price. The craftsmanship is among the best. My opinion is that it is the best WinMo phone right now. When it matures it will definitely pay off its value.
Do you want a large screen (same resolution) or a hardware keyboard? If you need keyboard go for X1 if not go for HD.

I think the camera is quite good compared to my other phones. I never took a pic with the touch pro so i can't tell u if that was good or bad. The video quality is pretty decent too.

Speaker is way too low for me and the fact that the speakers are right by where u would hold the phone so ur covering the speaker when ur using it.

I'm watching a movie on it right now and the sound is pretty good i guess. I'm no expert but i also have no complaints.

MY GOD!!! The battery is the sickest thing i've ever seen. I had WIFI, bluetooth (which keeps cutting off), screen on max brightness, Running TFL3D and streaming video and i got 4-5hrs out of the battery.

I like the scroll pad its a nice work around for having no directional pads on the keypad.

I like the panels too. They aren't as slow as i thought they would be and its good to be able to just change ur today screen. Having TFL3D as a panel is what made it the greatest for me.

That is a personal decision. If u don't mind not having a keyboard then go touch hd otherwise i would go xperia x1 i personally wouldn't even have the touch pro in the ranking.

Camera is about the best I've seen on a htc device, but that doesn't say much it's okay within obvious limits, video is pretty good..
flash is htc LED flash, say no more.
speaker is tinny and weak, as expected, single tiny speaker that you can cover with your hand far too easily, this has good and bad points.
Earpiece during calls is superb, plenty loud and people sound very clear with wonderful deep roundness to it. I described it to someone yesterday as like listening to BBC Radio 4! I also get comments from people telling me how clear and loud I sound, my Dad keeps phoning me 'cos he can actually hear what I'm saying for a change.
headphone sound through included headset is superb, rich full lows and really zippy high, and that's without the audiobooster. it looks like the vodafone tweaks have boosted the lows and reduced the highs a bit.
Battery life is good after first couple of days (of playing far too much). SE appear to have done some work on tweaking this, especially standby. I left mine on without using it last night, it lost 10% in 10 hours
poor connection (constant searching), UMTS bowsing and WiFI kill it though lost about 40% in 3 hours.
I've grown to love the optical touchpad, at first I hated it, and set the sensitivity all the way down, but with use I've set the sensitivity really high and use it instead of the D-pad keys most of the time.
Panels I find are boring very quickly, the card effect is good to show off down the pub. Pretty gimmicky overall, works very well to impress p*ssheads though! TF3d works very well, for me at least and is better..
Maybe I'll install the SDK and see what you can actually do with them, potentially it looks like you could use them as a container for running today dlls I think.
Overall phone is best WM device I've tried, I was a bit cautious coming from the Athena, but I've even got used to the small size (for me at least it feels small) but that's cos the last two phones were Uni and then athena.. And I've got huge hands, so it disappears, there's once or twice I've left the house and gone back to find the phone as it's so much smaller than those two you don't notice it's there, to realise that I've got it in my pocket all along! (a bit embarrassing as I've got music playing)..
I did contemplate selling it and getting a HD, but I've really grown fond of this, if I was offered a direct swap I'd be tempted but I'm very very happy.
FM radio is okay, don't tend to listen to radio much, but it picks up all the local and national channels here.
Main drawback is that it's probably the most mainstream WM phone there's ever been, I think that's a good thing, but it does mean we've got loads of new users in here that don't really understand what XDA_Developer is about and think people are here to tell them how to use their new pocket power ;D
:edit: one more thing, and something I noticed the first time I turned it on, the Wifi is the best I've ever used. I was picking up a signal from my router at the end of the drive, that's better than my laptops Sparklan a/b/g/n
I'm getting about 3 times more routers picked up travelling through built up areas than I ever did with the athena.

Touch HD Speaker quality?

Havn't seen any threads around here about the quality of the loudspeaker, like for mp3 ringtones and such.
I have an XDA2i and the sound is tiny, with no real range, but it does get loud enough to hear ok. I'm wondering, could anyone with an HD post a quick paragraph about how the sound is over loudspeaker.
Also, i understand there is a system equalizer. does this effect the loud speaker or only music over headphones?

Considering it's a tiny speaker it's not bad. No complaints.
There is an EQ program called 'Audio Booster' which is also integrated with the TF3D music player, this does only work with headphones.

yes I agree, it really is awful.
The speaker in it is worse than listening to a single mini headphone placed in the middle of a table. Terrible! Considering the price, a decent speaker would have been nice . .
as would a flash for the camera
as would GPS that didnt take 5 minutes
as would the ability to play movies without them stuttering
as would the ability to view flash content in web pages
as would the ability to store stuff on decent internal storage
I know all the arguments for the above, size, weight, battery . . . but you have to remember what we all paid for this device. We paid a HECK of a lot of money.

the trinity was worse - I don't mind the sound quality which is just lacking basses but is not crackling...

mmm that's good. on full volume songs on the 2i were cracky. i didn't expect any bass really.

Philo, I do take your point honest I do, but my point is that we are paying between €600 and €700 for this puppy. That's like buying a Rolls Royce. You expect everything to be perfect and of excellent quality. Is that not a fair expectation for that amount of money?

Yer I guess that's true
Personally I would use the multimedia features of the phone on the move with headphones so don't really consider this a particularly important feature of the device.

no complaints, i think the speaker is very good, much better than the diamond!

No sir, you're not being fair. First of all, the device is not expensive, if we're to be honest about it. My uncle paidmore than usd 10,000 for a car battery size phone years back. My first brick sized phone cost close to usd 2000. Now you have phone/gps/mp3/camera/video recorder/video player/computer/radio for a mere fraction when inflation should have pushed it to usd 70,000, but we're paying 100th of that.
Next, if you're expecting a perfect quality sound, buy an FM broadcast device and play your music over your car speaker, or wire it to your home HIFI system (which I often do), or buy a good quality headset and listen to your music in that way. The speaker on the phone is mainly for the ringtone. If it is loud enough to alert you, that's mostly enough. Don't expect AC3, or 5.1 sound coming out of that because one should never try to enjoy good music from this tiny little speaker.

As long as it plays the ringtones loud enough for me to hear them - i'm happy.

These comparisons are hard for some of us. The Touch HD has attracted many new users to WinMo.
How does it compare to Nokia phones such as the N95, N95 8GB etc.

Ha ha.. I don't blame you. Most of you may not be born yet when the battery size phone first emerged..
The electronic manufacturing industry is a tough and competitive one. The speed of a product becoming obsolete is frightening. A design flaw and pricing error can cause seriuos problem. The production line have to be changed all the time for new models. I have listened to a speech by the owner/ceo of the company which manufactures iPhone and have lots of respect for the continuous drives for efficiency, technology vision, and good judgement.
A sofa, table, and furniture can still sell 10 years 20 years later if there is no demand now. But an 2 MP camera that does not sell within a certain time frame is a junk that nobody wants. So, they cannot afford to charge too much and to overprice.
Sorry a little off topic. But just to make a point that HD is not really expensive. It is good value.

I agree with that. The HD speaker is very good to alert me to incoming calls, and gives very good in-call volume. If I want to listen to quaity audio, I'l be putting in the headphones. The diamond has terrible volume in comparison. It's a bit of an issue, but not insurmountable. The HD, in my view, is more than fine.

I remember when pda's first were able to accomodate a sim card, and take calls. This was new fangled nonsense that I was completely unwilling to trust. I carried an iPaq and a seperate phone for a number of years. It wasn't until tytn that I felt that the phone ability of the combined smartphones was good enough to dispense with a dedicated phone.

actually the SE P900 was my first smartphone where I dispensed with my ipaq (which just became a dedicated satnav). Tytn was the first WM smartphone I trusted for phone calls.

Hi there, I dont know if this will be no news to most people out there, but ppl, I just realised if you get the iphone ear phones with the mic, You can use it on the Hero for the following
- Receive Calls
- As Expected Listen to Music
- But You can actually squeeze the mic once to pause the song,
- Squeeze it 2 quick times and it will change the track
If you know of any other ways to use the earphone pls drop me a line but right now Illd go back to enjoying this two lil piece of hardware I have that make my life far much better.

I've been using my old iPhone earphones since I switched to the Pre last summer
Love them... great quality on the audio, too.

I think the factory iPod/iPhone head phones are garbage. The sound quality is horrible. I guess thats why they can afford to give them away at the moron bar.
My guess is though, if you have a set of good sony's that are iPhone compatible they would be Hero compatible as well.

Is this while playing a song, cos the whole discovery happened in less than 40 mins ago, so i didnt get to dig into how guarranteed it works.
Well I run a ic3rom 2.1 Rom(That just got release last night and is super sweet.)and mine is the Sprint Version so idk if you are on the same boat.

Maybe I'm just a music snob, but does anyone else think the Hero sounds like crap? If you don't you probably have never tried to listen to it over amplified speakers (like in the aux jack in a car). Total crappola Damn shame too, there was great potential for awesomeness.

Yeah I noticed that it doesn't sound all that great as well. espically with car speakers

I hook mine to the deck over USB. Deck handles all the decoding. Phone is just a hard drive to it.

yeah my hero sounds like sh*t in the car.
i have a pair of samsung earphones that work as playback and mic during calls, the mute button even works.
is it wierd my g1 soubded better over my car speakers, and that i had to get the usb to headphone jack adapter. ha!

I know the ones that come with the pre and the moment work as well. And yes the Hero seems to be eq'd very strange. Way to much mids and bass in the car makes things a tad muddy.

make sure you do not have the volume on the hero all the way up try turning it way down and adjusting mainly through the car stereo this should help and sound fine......

My wife connects hers through a cassette adapter to the car stereo and sound is great!

I have a 1000 watt amp and I'm blasting my hero as I ride. Sounds great to me.

are you streaming music to a HU with a DAC, or playing on some BT headphones? Seems like if you stick to the smaller speakers it sounds acceptable. That may explain the weird EQ settings, trying to overcome the poor quality earbuds most people like to use.

Music player and sound quality. OH GAWD.

Being used to cellphone audio quality (nokia 5800, SE W850) i know they are usually decent, but not more than that. So it didn't occure to me that i should try the player on the SGS i9000.
Today i finally did, to test the supplied earphones.
Hearing that the phone with the mediocre supplied earphones sounds good, i switched to my AKG K317.
HOLY *stuff that shouldn't be written here* THE SOUND QUALITY IS MINDBLOWING.
I don't know what the hell Samsung did here, but it appears that someone did something VERY right here.
Now i have no use for my Creative Zen, which is kind of sad.

I'm not sure this suprises me tbh, Samsung know what they are doing in this field, more than a lot of other companies.

Not a big fan of the headset tho. I find it hurts after a while and in the stock music player there is no way to skip the current track. No skip, no fast forward, reverse etc. MixZing can skip tracks, but it's a bit iffy and that's all it can do.
I have yet to find a music player that is as good as the one on my old iPhone. On that phone I could skip, reverse, fast forward, pause, play etc with the headset. And I often used voice control to change playlists and shuffle the songs when I'm out bicycling. Can't do this on this phone right now and that is a problem.
Sound quality on this one isn't bad though.
Got any advice for me?

Apparently (there's another thread that talks about that) the Nokia remotes work since it's the same jack layout. I'll have to try that out since controlling the player from the remote is essential.

Totally agree with the OP. Music is awesome on this phone. Beats the HTC HD2 and the iPod. Together with the Sure SE500 and Dolby surround enabled on the Galaxy it is simply amazing.

i agree, but the stock ear phones are funny :/
there's too much treble in it, and bass is low on high.
apart from that its an awesome phone.

When GSMarena reviewed the Galaxy S, they described it as "perfect audio quality":

The sound in SGS is shallow, skips beats occasionally, and pauses occasionally, may be due to lags. It is also very lacking in functions and features.
iPhone's music player is miles ahead, if you really have been using both.
1. iPhone music player lets me combine music video and audio into a single playlist. SGS can't.
2. iPhone music player lets me continue to play the sound on video with the option of screen completely shut off, therefore good for listening to music videos without having to look at the picture. SGS can't.
3. iPhone music player lets me pause/play/skip/repeat songs entirely with the volume button, with the music running in both foreground and background and both screen on or off. SGS has an application in the market place to contra music totally with the volume button but the screen must be on, and music player must be the foreground task, so you can control it which surfing the net, for example.
4. iPhone music player has the option of displaying lyric while the music play. I'm not aware of such possibility. I'm talking about stock music player here.
5. iPhone standard headset also let me completely control the music playing (play/pause/skip/previous) with the control on the wire itself. What can the button in SGS's wired headset control? Limited, isn't it?
6. iPhone slider let's you slide either very fast or extremely slow depending on how far away you move your finger from the slider.
7. iPhone music player never ever pause, skip music. SGS does, which is one of the first things I noted and complained about.
8. iPhone music player does not require long media scan each time we reboot the phone. I don't even dare to put in all my 22 GB of musics on my SGS.
There are things i like more in SGS than iPhone, but music player and sound quality aren't among them.

From my experience, it all comes down to the right combination between the music player and the characteristics of the headset. For me the combination between the SGS and the Shure in ear phones is by far the best of all combinations I tried.

what model are you using appelflap?
I am pondering to get myself a sony/sennheiser soon..

You're right there, appleflap, more expensive headset does make hugh difference, but this works for both if one is willing to spend that much more for expensive headset. Won't help with the skips, pause, long media scanning time when you want the entire collection of music in, and the limited fuctionalities that I mentioned though.
Personally, I much prefer connecting my SGS or iPhone to good external speakers. Wow, the sound depth and richness completely change with that set up. That's what I always do before bed. I miss the ability to just rest my finger on the volume button to completely control the music in iPhone, without ever have to turn on the screen. I don't like sticking anything into my ear while trying to get to sleep, although I have that option.

Correct me if im wrong, but Apple uses a dedicated audio chip for music playing while samsung is just using the A8 CPU for it. This accounts for the crap battery life when playing audio on the Galaxy (barely 10 hours) vs 40 on the iPhone 4 and the better sound quality on the iPhone.
I basically went back to the iPhone because of this. For a phone that's touted as a multimedia powerhouse, not having a dedicated audio chip seems absurd to me. I work for 10 hours a day and I like to listen to music the whole time, with the Galaxy I'd go back home with 30% battery and only if I hadn't used the phone for anything else. With the iPhone I can play music all day and be back home with more than 75% battery.

You can always buy a spare battery. Or better yet, buy 10 ( ebay sells them for 5$ the piece) and you can listen for 10 days to music.
iPhone can't do that that's why I even didn't consider the iPhone (kidding)

Those battery are useless. I've tried them. It's cheaper to buy the genuine one although they cost 20 times more. It turns out cheaper.

Yeah, I read that. I personally haven't any problems with it. I have had never any skip or pause. And as for the media scanning: I was pretty amazed about the speed actually. In contrast to my HD2 it is blazing fast. Scanning 14 Gb of audio files in just a few seconds is pretty amazing.
Maybe there are some problems with your SD card?

I just ordered 2 with a charger. I know they won't last as long as the original ones, but as spare batteries I expect they will do there job. (For my HD2 I also had those cheap ebay batteries and I was very satisfied with it)

I ordered two of those before. I gave a 5 star rating to them when I first got them. However, very very quickly the live shorten, and within a couple of months became useless. Now they no longer charge.

[Q] Another "I'm thinking about a Streak" thread

With the price drop, I'm seriously tempted to order one. I played with one at Best Buy for a few minutes (literally maybe 2) and I did like what I saw. That said, I have a few questions...
I think my primary device will remain my N1. I see it as a bit more portable. The Streak will certainly get some regular use when I need a little more size, once I get a good BT, that is.
At any rate, my questions are:
Does the Streak still suffer from large borders around most apps? I think most of this is probably dependent on the app, and the developer making it work for various sizes and resolutions. I know it was a decent complaint upon initial reviews. How's it look now?
I've read a lot of complaints about the 2.2 update. Is it better? Is it stable? Is it better to flash something like DJ Steve's (I think that's the name) or some other custom ROM?
How's the audio performance? Let's split this into three sections. First, audio on phone calls. Decent noise cancellation? Decent incoming sound? Any complaints from those you chat with?
Second on audio, how's the speaker? The N1 has a huge shortcoming there, in my ever so humble opinion. For speakerphone and audio from music/videos, the speaker on the N1 sucks. How's the Streak's?
Audio out and bluetooth audio. I listen to a lot of music at work, and I plug my N1 into my car stereo quite frequently. I can't imagine any issues here, but it's a prime function for me, so I want to sure I won't have any issues.
Video performance. Decent GPU? I don't do a lot of videos, but I can see myself doing more with the Streak. Additionally, I take my son on some road trips, and I definitely foresee him watching movies and playing games while on the road. Most trips are about an hour and a half, up to two hours. He sleeps in the car less and less as he gets older, so I see huge potential here. The N1 GPU isn't that great, sadly.
I've tried to read most of these threads, and I know the vast majority of you are very happy with your Streaks. I'm seriously tempted to pick one up. I also plan on getting whatever dual core comes to AT&T, so the Streak is basically just a bonus. I may hold out for a 7". Pretty torn, but that $400 price point is right up my alley and pretty hard to turn down.

I said the same thing about my iPhone 3GS. But in the 10 days I have had my Streak, I have not even considered turning the iPhone back on.

Every app I've used so far takes up the entire screen. Some pics in apps don't; TMZ is the one that comes to mind. Other than that it uses the entire real estate for me.

2.2 is very stable for me. The stock UI is pretty worthless so I'm running ADW.Launcher. I cannot speak for custom Streak ROMs; haven't tried any of them yet. Nor have I had desire to.

I usually turn on the speakerphone only when I'm on hold waiting for the next available coordinator. It's pretty much like any other phone I've used. Sound is decent. I haven't listened to any music but I have watched a movie or two and it's not theater sound but it works. I have a Otterbox Defender case that might interfere with the sounds but I have no complaints.

I have a Parrot in my truck that I use for calls and the bluetooth sound for phone calls is great. No complaints at all. I haven't paired my Plantronics 590 headphones with it yet so I can't speak for music over bluetooth yet.

I watched Iron Man 2 on my Streak end-to-end and it was flawless. I was using my Denon headphones for sounds.
Now all that said, my ONLY complaints about the Streak are the battery life and trying to find a car charger that works unmodified. Battery life is to be expected the way I use it. Wifi, 3G, Bluetooth, all on 24x7. But the car charger thing miffs me. I bought a 1000mA USB charger but the Streak will not recognize/charge with it. I've read where you have to solder pins together to work. WTF?

I just ordered the unlocked Streak today and they offer this bluetooth headset for 99 cents when you buy.
I don't know how good it is but for 99 cents I figured it was worth it. I have bluetooth built in on my vehicle radio, but will probably use a headset more with the Streak.

The charger issue appears to be common with many of the newer phones. I know there are a lot of posts about this same issue in the Motorola owners forums. From what i have read the mod to a cigarette lighter to USB adapter is pretty easy.
