eLocity A7 Tegra 2 froyo @ Bj's for $299 Now. - A7 General

The eLocity A7 froyo, capacitive tegrat 2 table now available. The company said this tablet will be open so i hope you guys will support it.
go to the elocity site and click on the purchase tab and then click on the BJs logo to buy. I cant post outside links yet.

Yeah i just ordered one really like the size of my galaxy tab im willing to try this out
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App

Just ordered one too.
I was considering a color Nook, so spending $50 more for a Tegra 2-based tablet looks like a great deal.
I hope the XDA geniuses take a run at rooting and getting Google Marketplace running on it.

got my order confirmed this morning and because they delayed it a day the itme is now out of stock and my order was cancelled oh well

I ordered mine from tigerdirect and received confirmation.
Hopefully they ship it soon.
BJs charge shipping + tax shipped to NJ comes out same price as tigerdirect.
Hardest part will be deciding selling archos 70IT or returning A7

I had one on pre-order with Amazon (for $379), but when I heard about the BJs.com thing last night, I ordered one from them. BJs.com shipped it out today, and so did Amazon... go figure! I'm sending the Amazon one back, but I should have both of them in the next couple days.
This tablet is for my wife, but I'm really hoping to see some developer support too. I'm going to see what hacking I can get away with before I give it to her on Christmas =)

I'm interested to know which one you pick. The Archos 70 was my backup if the pre-order didn't come through.

Nice..I'm very curious how development will be on a device like this.
Hmm...I'm think Dell Streak homescreen would fit nicely

Its available again so im deciding if i should reorder or wait for a tegra tab with built in 3g >_

I'm not concerned with 3g (it has USB so I can always 4G internet share from my phone or there's wireless tethering in seconds). What I am concerned with is the screen resolution. I would imagine it has to look pretty pixelated at that size and resolution (7", 800x480, 133dpi), the Galaxy Tab is much higher at the same size screen (7"/1024x600/170 dpi). Surprisingly, the iPad has a slightly lower dpi but still looks great (9.7"/1024x768/132 dpi)..To compare to a smaller device, a Nexus One is 3.7", 800x480, 254 dpi.
Considering the price, I suppose it really can't be beat tho. IMO development makes or breaks devices like this.

Amazon actually pricematched and now are at $357 shipped (no tax to NJ ).

completely torn because io love my galaxy tab but there has yet to be any true deep development i think due to the pricing (i do appreciate the work being done currently for the galaxy tablet though)

Just ordered mine
Just ordered mine yesterday and it is on its way, ill confirm whether universal androot or z4root works asap. Also lets try to get some devs in on getting market for this puppy and maybe some themes and roms. Start posting guys!

Recieved mine today.
My first android device
I'm looking forward to learning how this thing works.
So far, it is really fast.
Seems like a very generic tablet.
Doesn't have Android Market; Getjar instead.
No google apps.
No calendar.
No notepad.
Basic email and browser (w/flash 10.1 installed) included.
Not sure where to start...
I did install Swype and it works great! That is one of the main reasons I bought a tablet!
BTW, bought mine from BJS.com for $299 plus tax and shipping. No membership required. No surcharge for nonmembers.
Ordered yesterday, got it today!

Hey jazz how are the viewing angles on the device any way you can host some photos?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App

Mine will be here within hours, but I have one very important question for those already with the device. How many simultaneous points can the touchscreen register? Their official spec-sheet says it's a 1-point with pinch-zoom gesture :/

I have soo many questions:
Lets start with the easy:
1)screen- how are viewing angles. I currently have the vewsonic gtablet and plan on returning it due to lousy viewing angles. Also how is the 800x480 resolution whihc some were suggesting might be too low (galaxy tab and nook color are 1024x600)
2)Battery life. My viewsonic is claimed to have 8-10 hours battery life. How is this smaller device
3)Form factor. How does it feel in the hand. Well balanced? easy to type with? Can it be used one handed?
4)Connectivity. Is absence of wireless N an issue? Can an external keyboard (either bluetooth or usb) work with this?
5)Hackability- I am not sure if you plan to or have tried but being on xda I think you would; can u root it with z4root or androot? Would imagine this is doable
6)UI The viewsonic stock UI layer over android is terrible and if not for other Roms it would have gone back immediately. nOw with work done here the Gtablet is fast with its tegra processor. How is the stock UI layer? is the overall experience quick? Have you run quadrant score?
I know tonnes of questions,b ut you are among the first to own this tab!!!!!

I'm a newbie, so please forgive my ignorance, so here goes:
1. multitouch works. ie. pinch to zoom. It seems to go too far when I do it, but I think that is because I hold it too long. The response is extremely fast.
2. Battery. I've been using it for 1.5 hours so far this morning, very heavy use playing Ashphalt, Madden, web browsing, etc. Full brightness. Battery is currently at 60%.
3. I love the form factor. The case has a very slight rubberized feel. No fingerprints, except on the screen, which is glass.
4. Downloads seem very fast. I don't have an N router, so can't comment on that. I just ran Speedtest. Download speed was 12.33Mbps vs. 13.23Mbps on my laptop.
5. I just plugged a USB keyboard in and it works.
6. No hacking yet. I can't even figure out how to start and stop applications! Android is really foreign to me.
7. This device needs a calendar! I assume Google apps are the best choice? I haven't figured out how to install it.
8. No Android Marketplace either. Getjar instead.
9. Viewing angles: I don't have anything other than my laptop to compare to, so it's not fair to assess. I will take some photos of an image and upload if possible.

photos of viewing angles
Here are some photos of viewing angles.
Compared to my HP 17" 1920x1200 laptop.
Photos from face on and 30 degrees above and below.
As you can see, the screen darkens most when viewed from below. In use, I haven't had any problems at all.
ps. sorry, I just noticed that the view from above is very blurry. It still shows the brightness though. Let me know if you want more.
Also, are we going to get a dedicated forum for this device?

I have gotta say, I love swype! I'm using it right now and it is really fast!
I have been seeing mention of CM regarding installing android market and gapps. Is that clockwork mod or cyanogen? Is there a specific version for every device?
Also,i don't understand the file system on these devices.

ELocity A7

I bought a g tablet. I feel close to it given I put in more than 30 hours going through different beta versions of alternate roms trying to get things the way they should be since out of the box it was a piece of crap. Being in canada I had driven to nearest Sears in US to Purchase it. Before the screen calibration fix I had essentially given up the inability to type properly and the horrible viewing angles and Sd card woes had me looking elsewhere.
Having tried the more expensive Galaxy Tab and finding it laggy and flash video unviewble, I decided I needed a Tegra based device. I also felt for my needs 7 inches might be better as I find typing in landscape mode hard with a 10 incher(hmm weird genital reference there LOL). I also feel that for my needs (book reading, surfing video watching, the odd game, and quick reference use) that the smaller form fact might be better given it is lighter and more portable (can fit in coat pocket....)
Heard about the ELocity and saw it available for 100$ less than what ipaid for g tab. so ordered it to my Brother's in Florida as will be there next week. It is already there waiting for me.
Of course since ordering it not having given the g tab back yet I have it working the way I want minus the screen viewing angles which I hate as I cant type on it when lounging unless holding it awkwardly in landscape mode using my thumbs.
Seems the Elocity has much better screen in terms of viewing angles. While lower res, the DPI is in fact the same and conforms to the Android OS max resolution of 800x480 so I suspect most apps will look correct on it. It also appears to come rooted out of the box. The UI layer on it is fast and responsive and flash is there to start. So for those considering a g tablet and don't want to muck around it works much better out of the box.
Seems it is not perfect yet and suffers many of the same issues the G tablet did:
Like the gtablet there is no official android market
Wifi for some seems to not wake up with the device from sleep
Angry birds won't run
All of the above from what I have read seem to be related to drivers and tegra 2 not having the best or newest ones out of the box.
Elocity says a fix is coming on december 24th (wonder if this is similar to what was done by Roebeet et al. with TNT light and Vega N with the performance upgrades form experimental diver pack)
Multitouch which is supposed to be 1+1 (which I believe is what the gtab is) doesn't seem to be enabled properly and is only emulated in software, and as of yet, not very well.
Seems from some things discovered on a different thread that this might be a 2 point multitouch after all.
For some reason there is no Elocity forum yet which I think could impede people coming on and helping development on it (Notion Ink Adam has a forum though there is no device in the wild for another month at least). I suspect given these are both Tegra 2 devices that there might be some parallel things to help.

gtablet Adobe Flash update
Greetings, this may be something and may be nothing.
Just FYI –
I talked to Mike at Viewsonic support on 20101220 3:34p PST.
He advises that Staples had an in store warranty conflict and no manufacturing defect exists with the gtablet. The update scheduled for 20101219 is posted and done so in such a way that some folks see it auto-download with WIFI and some will not for approx 24 to 48 hours.
Mike also advises that the Adobe Flash update IS NOT part of the latest update however he says it is still in the works and will be updated soon.
I am still contemplating whether to return mine or not. I have had it for 27 days and it has been absolutely fabulous and beyond my expectations less the FLASH player.
I need INPUT INPUT INPUT.
Thanks - feel free to email me –

Can't wait
I rooted my wife's HTC Desire since it took forever for Froyo. My phone is a WinMo 6.1 HTC Touch Pro. Love it, but Android is much more user friendly.
I am anti-"any product that starts with lower case i" and I'm looking for a good tab. If the patch comes out on the 24th as promised, I'm ready to pull the trigger.
The price is just right IMHO for this tab. However, depending how dev on this tab progresses after the new update, I may wait to see what's coming at CES.
Unfortunately for my wallet, I'm an instant gratification kind of guy. I can't build my $1600 gaming rig just yet, but this just might tide me over. I'm so tired of my netbook for menial tasks. Video playback sucks.
So... who else is stoked about the A7?
Post Firmware Update
Just ordered my from J&R Music. They had it for 299.99. Once I saw the performance increase with the new update, as well as some tweaks from our freinds at XDA, it was a done deal.
Ordered an 16 Micro SD with it, and I couldn't be more excited. I just sold my netbook, and this will its replacement. The netbook was great for light surfing, Skype, and email. It chugged at everthing else. Intel's GMA graphics on netbooks just suck! Here comes nVidia!
elocity
I just ordered from shopnbc. I used the flexpay option as this option is more pocket friendly for me at the moment. I'm returning my nook color because tomorrow marks the 14th day and won't be returnable after 15 days. The video presentation on that site played angry birds, video and flash on a website without issues. I can't wait till it gets here!

I took a hit for the team... I modded my eLocity to the newest modware; eLocityMod 1.4.1. Now all my downloaded games, and apps work PERFECT. I now have the Google Market as well as the Amazon AppStore. Angry Birds RIO works like a dream ! The only problem I am having with the new Mod is that I can not hot swap USB drives. I got to boot up the device with the USB thumb drive already inserted so that the eLocity will recognize it.

Motorola WIFI Xoom - Initial Impression

Revised 03/26/2011 - Updated revised initial impression @ http://mobiletech.knguyentu.com/2011/03/motorola-xoom-wifi-version-initial.html
Revised 03/27/2011 - Using Samsung Galaxy S (Fascinate) record demo of Motorola Xoom playback of Apple's iPad format of M4V (converted using handbrake - see link above to handbrake xoom profile)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8KuypTZVVw
============================================================
Just picked up the Motorola Xoom @ Staples. There was no issue or question on purchasing it.
To Set Foundation:
I have had several android phones like the Motorola Droid, Droid X, and Samsung Galaxy S. So I am familiar with the Android OS. At the same time, I've had the Apple iPad 32GB generation 1 since it was first launched. So I am familiar with that too.
Initial Impressions:
Weight - Having own the first gen iPad and now having the Xoom, the weight from usage is very comparable. You can't really tell the weight differences, unless you have both of them in your hand and really focus on trying to feel the weight out. It is very comfortable holding to the hand.
Display - Of all of the demo I've seen on the 3G version at Costco and pictures / youtube, I have to say those do not do justice to the screen. I believe that be attribute to the auto brightness screen adjustment functionality. After disable that and adjust brightness to high, the picture actually looks pretty decent. Being a hobbyist photographer, I look at several images I had taken from Flower Field out near Oceanside, California. The color looks very vibrant and crisp. Again, unless you have the iPad next to you to comparison and purposely want to look for that detail, the Xoom display is actually pretty good.
OS - It comes with Android 3.01 build HWI69
Other Stuff - It seems to have come with GPS. In the setting there is a check box asking if you want to use GPS to find your location. Bring up google map, it found me within less than 60 meters. There is a microSD slot and it is located in the exact location where the 3G version has it. Hidden under the LTE sim slot. The standard Motorola Case for the xoom that you can purchase for 29.99 is a huge disappointment. The one Apple design for the iPad was way better. This one looks and feel like cheap material that doesn't seem to fit the tablet well. When trying to close it, it doesn't close properly. The dumb design is the lack of having a hole for the power plug. The power plug is another disappointment. You have buy new car charger and power plug because it uses a different plug. Looks like a small pin. Why can't they keep to standard like Apple.
I like where the power button is situated behind the pad, leaving the front very clean. It is a finger print magnet, so I can't wait to put invisible shield on it.
Software - The email software is just like gmail. Very simple and easy to use. The OS on the other hand, still a bit clunky. It could use some optimization. With Apple iPad, you can use it for weeks w/o having to restart because it automatically ends application (lack of multi-task). Due to this allowing multi-task, there is no way to end the task w/o having to kill it in the setting. You can simply press the back button to have the task end and release it back the memory. The touch screen is very responsive. No issue there. I like the revised picture gallery, it uses the x/y axis ability as you move around the gallery sort of do this 3D effect. It comes standard with a few MP3 music in there, one from Carrie Underwood and others. The Calendar is a nice improvement over android phone version.
Screen font is not as crisp as ipad. You can and will notice a bit fuzz. I am not sure if that is because of the screen design or the font style. But we'll see as time goes on and using custom ROM to replace the font if that improves anything.
Overall, I am very pleased with the Xoom. It is not perfect and nothing really is, but the Honeycomb OS and on this very study Xoom has a lot of potential.
For those who are on the fence and ask in numerous thread Why Xoom? To me, it is a great toy to play with and does all the stuff iPad can do for the stuff I use it for daily. Surf the internet, read magazine, check email, etc., So if that is your purpose of the tablet, I highly recommend look at the next piece of it, which is cosmetics and aesthetics. Which one feels right to you in your hand. Are you able to navigate it easily.
For me, Xoom has more potential and allow me to start doing more than I did with iPad. It might open me up to other things, such as maybe trying to integrate it with my Nikon camera or maybe VPN to my home network and do remote desktop or tweak the hell out of it when I am bored with custom rom and themes.
Revised 03/26/2007: Made some update and post it on my blog - http://mobiletech.knguyentu.com/2011/03/motorola-xoom-wifi-version-initial.html
Thanx for the impressions. I just left my local Staples. They had them on display, but when i tried to buy one the guy said he couldnt sell to sunday. The website said they had them in stock and available.
Just called my local best buy. No go till the 27th. They tried to ring one up and it wouldn't allow the transaction.

Hi, could you open the case and tell us what it looks like inside? I wonder if it still has the mini-pcie slot and antennas.
Thanks !
Hi,
I also got the Wi-Fi Xoom yesterday. There were two apps that don't seem to work with the Wi-Fi Xoom. Pandora Radio and Gasbuddy. Could you try those out on your Xoom and determine if they work for you.
Thanks
Temecula, California Staples on Hwy 79 S just sold me Xoom WiFi. Nine left. Manager had no concern selling it.
Impressions later.

Will try staples tomorrow. Thanks for the info. In TX for those that are Trying.

So far of the apps I've download and tried, they all seems to work nicely with the Xoom
CNN tablet version
Sony Picture tablet version
USTODAY tablet version
Kindle - non-tablet version
Angry Bird Holiday
Amazon App Store
Amazon Mobile
Double Twist - sync great with PC and read iTune library
I got it at Staples in Chino, CA
on 100% charge. use it to download a few apps, surf the net, and edit some pictures...approx 1hr, went down to 94% battery life.
I got mine from staples today. Pandora also doesn't work for me. Just immediate force close.
Called my local Staples a little late in the evening. They would have sold me one today but it was to late to drive over there. Heading over in the morning. They had 5 in stock.
Tried 2 local Staples since their websites showed it in stock. Called ahead both times to confirm they had them. Went to both stores and was cockblocked both times by a manager.
Nice to see that 2 stores otherwise devoid of business refused to make a $600 sale because of a street date no one else really cares about.
I'll just hang tight and hit Sam's Club or Best Buy. Not a fan of Staples anyway.
nice to see people still interested on this device. I love mine and the only negatives i see will be addressed by a software update. The hardware is top notch

Can someone test out the standalone GPS on the wifi only xoom with navigation?
Got mine last night from Staples. GPS works great. Love the titanium look! Pandora force close
Got mine from Staples yesterday as well and been customizing the heck out of it. LOVE HONEYCOMB!!
GPS works great; tether to my EVO is fast; solid machine!
what do you mean tether to evo? wifi or bluetooth?
Looks like the wi-fi xoom has a glitch that doesn't allow Pandora to work.
The 3G version allows Pandora to work.

Hey, few quick questions. What rom are you on on your evo, and what tether app are you using? I'm on CM7 and I plan to use the built in tether but as far as I can tell with my testing it doesnt tether 4g? The 3g tether is quite fast though.
initial impression (general ergo and experience stuff) since last night's purchase:
+solid quality build
+material fit/finish top notch
+gun metal back
+wifi setup no issue
+google app synced easily
+ui's potential is exciting
+gps/navigation works fine
+browsing, calendar, exchange (via enhanced email app) all good
-flash choppy
-some fonts fuzzy
-some apks yet optimized for 3.0 and fc
i was expecting to find the device heavy and thick after trolling ipad comparison threads and gtab 8.9/10.1 threads but i do not have that view owning the xoom. not because i spent $600us and am accepting a compromise but because i appreciate the weight distribution as the device tappers from center to edges and i have no point of reference that more or less overall ounces/weight could make the unit feel "better".
if you are on fence and don't want to wait to see if sammy gums up the ui or if the actual release of their tabs are delayed further, the xoom wifi is worthy of fanboys. i bet with my wallet that our community will flush out the video playback growing pains and both google updates and dev-roms will take this hardware platform and honeycomb far.

[Q] NY Purchasers -- Are you satisfied??

For those who actually were able to make it to the NY Event, how do you feel about your purchase? It is meeting or exceeding expectations? Is it heavier or fatter than you thought it would be? I'm hoping to see some reviews from actual users, not review-sites. I know there are a lot of the IO edition users here, but I feel when you plunk down $500-600 for a device, your feelings are amplified and may provide for a "different" review.
Edit: and for those who wanted the grey, how do you feel about the white that you had to purchase? I originally wanted white, but feel that the grey would be more durable (that's a total guess, though).
My specific question regards creak and light bleed. I love the Asus transformer Inks some slight light bleeding along the bottom and right side. It is minor but I am obsessive.
Don't mind the bigger size of it as I do prefer its expandability.
Only review out since new release of the Samsung tab is on mobiletechreview YouTube. I could swear I see some light bleeding along the bottom and right sides. If this is at all an issue on these tabs I am happy to stay withmy Asus.
But my return window ends tomorrow so need help deciding now.

I'm happy with my purchase. i am also glad that i went in the afternoon (2:30p) instead of joining some line it literally took 2minutes tops. The build quality is actually quite sturdy considering that it is extreamly light, everything just fits snug and tight no creaks. i didnt notice any light leakage, but i was slow to notice it on my evo until i saw what to look for, so it's not noticible if present at all. i think for me personally no matter which tab i keep i'm going to be giving up something from the next, i like the sd card and the overclocking of my xoom but i gave it up for the light weightness and the sleakness of 10.1.

Corrected. It just feels like over a month away
you guys that bought one in NY, help us out with a 3.1 system dump
Hey,
I purchased mine yesterday, I got their at about 11:15am before the sale started. I really wanted to purchase the 32gb but ended up just buying the 16gb. This is my first 'tablet' that I've ever purchased.
I have a Droid 2 Global phone and I've done all the rooting etc/loading different mods etc and I'm looking forward to doing it with this. I bought this because I want to customize it the same way I did for my phone.
I'm kind of disappointed that i''ll have to buy the usb desktop hub thing in order to get full the usb functionality. Other than that though I really like it.
I bought the Wi-fi version because i can easily tether it to my phone (and have- it works really well). I commute from NJ to NY every day so I wanted something for the train that was bigger than my phone. I think its worth the purchase.
PS i voted - YES
I bought mine yesterday after work around 6:00 and I can honestly say that as a former Transformer owner, the Tab is a much better tablet for the extra $100. No light bleed, no creaks, no FCs...none at all. Plus its a lot more comfortable to hold especially over a longer period of time. Be advised that if you are a Mac owner there is currently no way to transfer through USB. I had to use doubletwist and sync wirelessly.
Did you try the Kies for Mac beta?
I was third in line. I'd been waiting since 5 in the morning. I'd planned to get the 32GB in grey, but since they only had the 16 white, I was a little let down...until I started to use it. I'm totally and completely happy with the device, and can't see myself being separated from it. I've already ordered the USB adapter from Samsung so I can connect my travel HDD and thumb drives for movies. I actually am so happy with it that I'm going to keep the White 16GB.
I wish i could see why the 2 people who are unhappy wothhthe device have voted as such. Assuming, that is, that they're not just trolling.
I'm only selling mine because I want the 32gb version. its a really sweet device.
I was 13th in line at BB and also was disappointed that the 16 GB white was the only model available. I let a couple of the Samsung reps know my dissatisfaction with the way the whole thing was handled, but that's a gripe for another thread. I'm happy with the unit and have zero regrets and, if I didn't like the gray-backed one better, I'd totally keep this one. Those that haven't gotten to handle one yet will be very happy with the unit.
I stopped in at 9pm on the 8th and there were plenty left. It's already listed on ebay in hopes I can make a few bucks. If not I will return it to Best Buy. Build quality is fantastic but 3 major issues:
1. How the F do you transfer files? I'm not interested in hunting down drivers or trying to find back door soutions. The whole purpose of getting an Android device over an ipad is NO ITUNES meaning DRAG AND DROP. I have tried connecting on Mac OS and Windows with no luck in getting any of my computers to recognize the device.
2. I installed Dropbox, waited 2 hours for 1 movie file to transfer over (AVI/divx format) and when it had finally transferred, the default player would not support playback. I didn't even bother trying to DL another media player. The F'in default player should play divx files since that is what is advertised.
3. The damn USB cable requires the charging block that came with it to charge. I can't trickle charge on my laptop's port or use any of my USB travel chargers. That means 1 more charger PLUS one more stupid proprietary connecting port that I have to travel with. Maybe not a big deal to most but I fly about 150 times per year so 2 more things to have to remember to pack is a huge deal.

Got mine last night a BB. They seemed to have at least a dozen left in the display area stack. But when I inquired 10 minutes ago they said they were sold out, though the may get more I stock by tomorrow.
I too wwas disappointed that the white model was the only one available, but in actual use it looks and feels pretty good. I may just stick with it.
Build is surperb, but honeycomb needs more tuning. Dedicated apps are supreme, just not enough of them. Looking forward to software improvements, including custom ROM, but I doubt I'll see better hardware before Christmas or ipad3 next year.
(Typing from my GT with thumb keyboard. Which is awesome!)
Mine died today. i was using it and i shut the screen off and now it wont turn back on... I will go back to Best Buy tomorrow to exchange it for a new one.
All and all I like it.

1. Downloading samsung kies driver from samsung's website should do the trick,no?
2. Don't bother to convert when transferring video files, and play it using a file a file manager, and it should be fine. (I've watched two HD David films with it already)
3. Not sure about the charging situation, shall check again.
hope this helps!

Acer Iconia vs HP Touchpad

Hello all. I'm on a bit of a budget and I'm going to buy one of these two tablets. Right now I'm leaning towards the a500. Was hoping to get some input and opinions on what you think I should do. I realize posting this in this forum I might get slightly biased opinions, so be it.
The only thing that makes me hesitate on the Acer is it has a slightly slower processor out of the box, but we're only talking .2ghz. What has the Acer been OC'd to still running stable?
Also, I see the wifi card uses the 2.4ghz spectrum, I believe this should allow me to tether this to my evo 3d with no problems?
Lastly, if anyone has anything to add, or something else I should consider before purchasing, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The touchpad doesn't run android and only has a port of cm7 which I think is still in beta/alpha. And they're extremely hard to get your hands on one for the price it has been lowered to. And the iconia can be had for $299 for the 16gb model on black friday

I would prefer the Touchpad if I could choose again. This is a personal experience for me, and I didn't have a good one with this honeycomb tablet. It has quite a few bugs that a lot of android users are facing, but could be avoided if a custom rom that fixes the bugs is installed, which voids your warranty. Also, Most Honeycomb tablets have the so called "Portrait lag", which makes the tablet slightly choppy or jittery (depends on roms, how much choppy) when it's in a portrait mode. In landscape, it's perfectly smooth. And if you would like to use the tablet in both orientation, I would first wait if the ICS fixes all the issues including the portrait lag. This lag is present in EVERY SINGLE rom I've tried (can't be avoided). Some people are actually saying that ICS will most likely fix the bugs, but bring different bugs to the android tablets. We have to try the ICS on tablets to know for sure. Anyway this is only my opinion, and again, if I could choose, I wouldn't buy an android tablet. I am actually thinking of selling this and getting a Touchpad soon..
Again, this is just my opinion, so all android fans, don't bash on me.

Although this is not the first time I've heard of what's been described as "portrait lag", I've never paid attention to it, as my tab stays locked in landscape (personally don't understand why people even use portrait mode, no offense intended).
So I just took it out of lock for the first time since June, when you had to run Gingerbreak locked in portrait mode IIRC.
I just ran through a dozen pages in browser, books, documents, ran through my apps, all my home screens, etc., and experienced nothing close to lag. Could someone maybe elaborate a bit more on the experience please?
tyia
The lag is terrible in 3.1 but it seems to have gone away in 3.2. I haven't used web OS since the 1st palm pre for sprint and although it looks very elegant there isn't enough devs for it and is possibly done with for good which means no future support. Now its been rumored the iconia will see an official release of ics so it will make this tab feel brand new again. The only reason I could see myself getting the touchpad would be to run cm7/9 on it but its a very nice looking piece of hardware. And I'm not an android fan boy. I do have the iconia tab and an evo3d but I also have a ipad and iPod touch so I'm kinda into everything.

I use portrait mode, because Google is so stupid that they put the status bar on the bottom and made the already narrow 16:9 tablet even narrower and its very annoying to browse the wn where you can see only small amount of the website at a time. This is also why I prefer 4:3 Touchpad. If the status bar is on one side of the screen, say like archos 101 G8, then I personally think it will make viewing web more pleasant. Same goes to PDF, document reading. Portrait mode is much better for that IMO.
And you may have misunderstood what I said, so let me clarify. The bug is called portrait 'lag' but its not lag, but as I explained, its choppiness, and jitteriness (is this even a word..? Lol). It gives users not so good experience. At least to me.
Just wanted to clarify.
Thanks for the responses, gives me more to think about. I probably should wait for the next generation of tabs, but I don't feel like dropping $600+ on one.
Right now I'm probably 65/35 in favor of the a500.

For the record, my A500 can run stable at 1.6 GHz, though I keep it at 1.4 to be reasonable.... the Tegra 2 seems to overclock well.
Just want to chime in on OC..with Thor's v13 ROM, my a500 oc'ed to 1.5G stable day to day operation
Running 1.68ghtz. Thors 3.9R3 kernel.
But really, who would even try to compare a TP to an Iconia? Especially considering they are no longer in production (unless you buy a notebook pc, then they toss one in).
HP never was really known for support, but, if you wanna get a discontinued item, hey, you get what you pay for
And talk about backtracking;
1. Let's merge with Compaq (2 losers become 1 big loser)
2. Let's buyout Palm, and change the name to Pre, now lets kill the line
3. Let's put out a tab, but nobody wants it
4. Let's kill the tab line
5. Oh, let's also get out of the PC business as well
6. Wait, all the tabs sold at 99 bucks, let's make another 1/4 mil units
7. Wait, we were kidding, we're not getting outta the PC business
8. And those extra tabs??? well, gotta buy a notebook to get one
Is this a company you really want to do business with?

If you're going to get an A500 wait until Black Friday, it's only a week away
I have both & use both as intended (for entertainment, quick email, etc.). For better support, I would stick with the Acer unit, even though very good community support is provided for the HP unit, it still is considered a "dead" unit.
i say buy the touchpad. as of now, cm7 runs pretty damn well and webos is a true gem for when you just want to browse, play emulators, use social apps, or schedule your calendar.
Battery life is also phenomenal.
Thanks again for the responses... Can I hit thanks in the xda app somehow? Or, do I have to fire up my laptop?
I had the original Palm Pre and the only real problem I had with it was it's build quality, but I liked webos. Yes, it's a dead OS, but if I can dual boot into a stable version of android that is fine. The build quality on the HP touchpad seems to be excellent as well.
However, I see myself mainly running android, and would think a device where it is the native OS would probably be the best in terms of community/developer support. I've also never had a honeycomb device and it would fun to play around with until ICS.
That being said, I'm a bit worried of build quality with the Acer. I noticed a door covering the microSD slot, and it seemed kinda flimsy.
I figure I can get both for $300 new, but the touchpad would also come with some extras like the folio case and Bluetooth keyboard for that price.
I'm going to get the Acer. The feature that put it over the top? It's getting a port of GTA 3, it had better be a good port. lol.
If you actually took the time to read through this post, please resume living your life immediately.

The sd/sim port, indeed can seem a bit weak, but, once you know how to get it off correctly, it's ok. Took mine off numerous times and no issues. But it's been a month since i needed to remove it, so it doesn't happen every day. Just don't be the hulk, as really it's easy.
The android community is number one, bar none.
But really, for a few dollars more, you can get the 501 with 3g (just don't get it from at&t as it's sim locked.
I just love rubbing in my download speeds with my friend (iPad owner). He stopped playing games with me. Or when I flash a new rom in 5 minutes, with a completely different theme and look.
The best is when I whip out my 320gb ext HDD and play films.

In the states that is...
They are like apples and oranges. Both are sweet, but oh, so different.
I bought the 16GB Touchpad from a local Walmart on the morning of the fire sale. I would not have done so otherwise. Do I regret the purchase? No. Do I use it often? No. I am much more interested in my Acer A500 or my little Galaxy Tab 7". They are versatile and FUN! I use whatever device is handy and is charged. That means I also use my 1st gen iPad as much as any other tablet. I just picked up a refurbished Acer W500, so that is my current plaything.
Follow your bliss or your wallet, whatever works, works.

LOL. You hit the nail right on the head I'd love to get a TP if I can only find one for $100.It woul be a nice toy to play with for Android ports, but nothing serious. When I first heard of the firesale (literally a couple hours after HP announced it), I dropped into all nearby electronic stores and they were already sold out. I'm seeing all kinds on classifies sites like kijiji and craigslist but they're all $250-300 which is more than I'd like to pay.
So if you can get one for $100, go for it. Otherwise, I'd either recommend the A500 or wait 1-2 months for a newer Tegra 3 device.
Acer all the way.
As of now the Touchpad is dead with webOS and not stable enough with android yet. You really can't do much with it now besides browsing the web and email. I don't like honeycomb very much but at least the Iconia will get the ICS upgrade.
I have the A500 and I am very satisfied, to say the least!
I also bought today the BB Playbook for $199cdn (the deal wasn't to be missed). Very nice machin.
Will be on sale in the US on black friday at Staples
I'd rather get a tetra based tablet, the touchpad is nice but who knows how top end games will be supported on that device. I had a nook color Flanders even the smoothness that it got to only made me want a real tablet

My Initial Thoughts....

Some of you have been around the block with this device. I have always had the stance that I did not need a tablet. I postponed and always found a reason to wait. When the Tab 10.1 was $325 shipped from woot, I could no longer fight that off.
While I waited for it to ship, I scoured your forum (very familiar with XDA, but never a section for tablets). I was EXTREMELY impressed with the posts, the peeps, feedback and the stickies/guides. I had a good feeling about the device before it even arrived, when you have a strong network to go to, any android device can be fun..... big kudos to those who write guides and develop for the Tab.
I also found help with accessories... ended up ordering the pyro skin carbon fiber case, which was sent extremely fast, good price and fits the tab like a glove... great experience (though I wanted the red one and they were out).
Finally... device shipped. Childhood Christmas people... so happy. Fought the urge, decided to power it up to full... cut it on, realized just HOW pretty the screen was on the bootup alone... loved the setup... even the "new" look of the login screens being so different from the android phones that i have used... just "cool."
Boots up, everything starts syncing.... thinking wow, extremely easy. That is so unlike Android (market perception, not mine).... then I started browsing the market... the web... youtube.. camera... gallery... everything is just working.
I know there is an update, so to be weird, I reboot, then update.... getting concerned because it seemed to take forever... finally, it reboots and voila, everything I was doing before looks the same if not better... great.
I load up all my apps... noticing Plume is the most sexy app ever.... night and day difference from the phone experience....
come back to XDA... decide to go ahead and root and try a rom. Find the root guide with the all in one download + video... Jesus, as someone who prides themselves on guides, that one is flawless... well done. The root process was crazy easy... only thing I would have suggested here, the guide could point out you could just flash a rom right after getting into CWR to cut out some steps.... regardless, very easy, very impressed. I know some of you have had, or have helped friends with other android devices not even close to being this easy. Kudos to developers, again.
I decide to go with Task650s 7.0.... the rom booted up and just felt right from the start. I have been putting it through the paces and still need to explore more, but so far with it AND the device, the tab is top notch. Can't believe I waited this long.
Right now I have my Galaxy S4G acting as my wifi hotspot at work, I can put a password on it so I do not think my data usage should be much different than if I were just using my phone... true? So much better using the Tab for checking twitter, etc than my phone.
Anyway, like I said.... some of you know this.... just felt like you might like reading a new guys perception.
As always, taking suggestions and feedback as I try and learn more about the Tab and what it can do.
Glad you like it and webt with tasks rom . As for using your phone as a hotspot, I do that and the tab uses abitt nore data, but only browsing the internet. And like I said to you, get the usb adapter. I can mount my phone in mass storage on my tab and use it to transfer files and stuff. My whole nandroid backup of my tab is stored on my phone along with it's own backup
i'm also a Woot purchaser, and just did the same procedure.
My tablet is really nice, now. I took advantage of Zagg's 50% off sale and got a leather back skin and their rubbery orange-peel screen protector. Now my Tab is the bigger brother clone of my HTC Thunderbolt. The leather gives an elegant feel with minimal weight, as well as some drop cushioning.
I didn't want an iPad, but I do love what this can do. Also, it connects to my Apple Air Port at 5GHz, so it gets a true 300Mbit to my NAS for book and movie loading.
Everytime I want to purchase an electronic device (my old system or my dslr or my gtab), I read a lot of reviews and watch videos on youtubes comparing it to other devices, and I have to say that I'm glad I bought the galaxy tab even though I paid $630 for the 32GB version, but and I even convinced my brother to get one instead of the ipad

I felt just like you, now I can't live without it. I got a SGS2 in May when they first came out and loaded it up with apps for video, reading, browsing and the like. Watching movies on a 4" screen is kind of underwhelming. Reading and surfing are a pain because you're always zooming the text to be able to read it. The Tab's so thin and light I take it everywhere now and it's my primary consumption device. E-mail and messaging is so much easier with the additional real estate. I now use my phone mostly for quick e-mails and messages, taking pictures and videos, and streaming via A2DP in my car. Everything else I do with the Tab. It's 3G so it's always connected so it's easy to whip out and just get stuff done. Teg 2 sucks but it's got enough horsepower for what I do with it. I'll get rid of it when Samsung's next-gen tablet comes out. Primarily because more power's always good and I like that the next-gen tablets have higher res screens.
Here's some apps I can't live without:
- Plex
They just upgraded the server and it's amazing how great it is at streaming video. I get unbelievable quality even over a 3G connection.
- PlayOn
Fantastic for Hulu and Amazon Instant. Again, the transcoding's excellent and plays well even on lower speed connections.
- SwiftKey Tablet X Keyboard
It was clunky at first but the latest revision was a complete revamp. The thumb keyboard's great as is their word suggestion logic.
- HD Widgets
Fantastic clock and weather widgets in multiple sizes designed for tablets.
- News360 and Pulse
Great tablet news feeds
Next Issue, Press Reader, and Zinio
All great tablet apps for newspapers and magazines. If you already have print subscriptions, the digital versions on Next Issue are free.
- TouchDown
The native e-mail client's not bad but TouchDown has great widgets for mail, appointments, and tasks.
- Asus SuperNote
It's a pull from the Transformer and available in the dev section. It's the best note app for hand writing notes. They all suck because of screen lag but this sucks the least.
Good luck with your new Tab, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I'm jealous of the woot guys who got their device already. Mine is scheduled for tomorrow, but I'm estimating Friday with how slow it's been so far.
Can't wait to get my hands on my new toy! I sold my transformer at the beginning of Nov, but after hearing of a $500 base price on the prime, it was over my allotted amount to spend on myself during the holidays.
Along came the woot sale, and I couldn't pass it up!
Loving my rooted Tab on Task's 7 as well and I agree it is an awesome Tablet...
Some apps that I enjoy on it are:
--Tweetcaster Pro
--Reader HD
--HD Widgets
--Thumb Keyboard
--Netflix
Glad to hear you are enjoying it!
Like some of you I'm pretty new to tablets. Just got my 10.1 tab a couple weeks ago and been immersing myself in thhe Android universe ever since.
I've been very impressed with the devs here and their products. I flashed In Paris v5 the day after I got the tab and today replaced it with Task 7.
It's sweeeeet.

I just installed ADW Launcher for $.10 from the Market. Makes a nice theming addition for the tablet.
I feel swanky with half off leather skin from Zagged and this chic and thin tablet with the Task Honeycomb. It would be awesome to have it perfectly match my Skyraider Zeus Thunderbolt. But, right now they are very similar.

thanks for the post OP. I (finally) received mine from Woot yesterday but I didn't get home till late. I plan on leaving work early today so I can play with my new toy, flash Task's ROM, etc. My SGS2 will get jealous
