a bit disappointed with Vibrant development and accesories...

I thought by now we will have something good and yet there isnt a single case that i like, a back cover, or a holster.....
and the development forum is filled with bunch of lag fixes and roms (2 roms) that are not even as good and stable as stock.
no word on froyo yet, media hub is crap, etc...
With worldwide release i really thought this will be moving with speeds of Nexus.....I guess i was wrong. Its just horrible that they decided to release 5 different variations of Galaxy S. Different bodies, and even different hardware, and therefore different firmware as well

It will come. There is a major learning curve since this is much coherent than the htc built phones. As for accessories yeah.. But it's only been 2 months, be patent..

i too thought that dev would have jumped all over galaxy S phones right away. i know there is a learning curve from htc phones, but i though they would be all over these as they all have the same basic hardware.
I do appreciate the dev who are here and helping and working
i wish for more accessories too

Honestly, this is the first android phone I've owned, I am quite impressed with the activity by the devs. There seems to be a lot of effort into designing tweaks that will lead to some quality changes to our Vibrants after the bugs are worked out.

i would, but unfortunately i am not a developer. and by adding and removing apps from stock rom back and forth is not really development. i do appreciate the lag fix, its working great so far.

Op please sell your phone, buy an HTC, and have a coke and a smile... quit complaining about one of the best phones in the WORLD market... if still unhappy there is always iPhone.... bye bye...

Well, I have the phone and my wife bought me a case. I felt in love with it. Amazon's is full of them. My case was worth 9 USD when I first bought it, I can tell u that now there are more expensive ones, the technology is much better.

if these points you listed are so important to you, why did you buy the phone before these things came along?
If and when I am looking at buying something new I do research before purchasing a product so I know what to expect. It sounds like you assumed these things would be ready day 2 after launch and now that they are not you panties are in a twist.
If this is really the case go look in the mirror and there you will have the person to blame for your aggravation .

I like the phone. and i do think it the best phone on the market (at least for me). But I would probably get Droid X if it wasnt so big.
After some mods to phone, i am very happy with it (except for back cover and 2.1, well and the fact that compass just doesnt work at all), gps works,launcher pro plus is a killer, lag fix works, battery indicator fixed, and obviously removed all crapware, oh and tasker app makes word of difference too.

The Nexus One is sold as a developers phone, so it should and is supported as one.
I think the developers have lives and a real job. Making this a fun hobby for most of them. So just relax, be patient and before you know it you will have every tweaked/hacked/themed ROM available for your flashing pleasure.

Are actually retarded, so you must make the same stupid point over and over?
We buy stuff when we need it -- like when the old phone breaks, or a plan needs to be renewed.... Most people research a bit, then weigh the pros and cons and take the plunge.
After some use, everyone finds things they like or dislike about their purchase.
But really, why shouldn't we expect to be able to buy by now the dock that Samsung was showing off in their ads way before the phone was available?

Just cleaned this thread and removed some unacceptable comments which absolutely break XDA Rule 2 and usually lead to the suspension of user accounts.

Actually, demanding that a product for which you've paid $500 works and it's upgradeable for a reasonable time as long as the hardware supports it (just like a computer), is not *****ing.
When you buy a new car and the radio doesn't work, you don't expect the dealer to tell you to either wait indefinitely, or fix it yourself. Same with this phone.

Difference the phone works as is, everything works fine on it. You just want it to work "better".
Well I want my myTouch to be better. Yea, they should trade me out to a myTouch Slide! I spent 250!!! dollars on it.
I don't remember the last time I bought a computer and then when the next version of an OS came out I got it for free. Either shut up, or learn to develop on your own.

i dont understand what will make it "ready" if they are planning on eventually releasing it what will keep it from being ported to phones then. If its a matter of incompleteness then what's changed since Cupcake which everyone agrees was more .8 than 1.0. Releasing it to dev's will allow for bugfixes and tweaks to get merged upstream.

And really what harm does it do the put out the code, so people will port it to other devices, you can keep doing what you will but make lots of devs happy.

I mean we already know that the percentage of people running custom Roms, while large for what it is, is not the bulk of people using Android. And we know that what we're doing may not be the smoothest experience. The SDK has already been ported to pretty much everything, and they're worried about the actual 3.0 being a poor experience? Come on Google, what's this really about?

This wasn't the best source to quote from. Google said they don't want developers trying to port it to phones yet since they can't guarantee a good user experience on phones. They're afraid XDA is going to port it, people try to run it on their phones and then say how crappy it runs on a phone even though that's not what it was designed for. You know it would happen, and word would spread that it sucks on phones and yada yada it doesn't get a fair chance.

As much of a ROM guy as I am, I admit this makes sense from a business stand point. Google makes $ from licensing and distribution (with regards to Android). The hacker communities do not make up said market for the most part.
The worst thing companies combat these days is negative publicity.
I owned an iPhone, two iterations, the 3G and the original. Why did my mother never purchase one, nor my sister? Simply because of how locked down they are due to MY advice. Were they ever going to buy said device due to their hackability? Hell no. But because I said it was sh**** that Apple locks their stuff down so much, they declined to buy said hardware.
Releasing the software for Google could have a lot of negative effects on a BRAND NEW operating system for a BRAND NEW market for Google. If people are throwing this on phones, you search it out on the internet, and everything is Honeycomb this sucks, and honeycomb that sucks, due to people using it on phones, most people who try to do basic research, like my mother, or sister,
will only see "THIS SUCKS".
Just my 2c, but I can see their stand point. Until they can find a way to keep it off the phones, I see this as an issue for google.

Uhmm, are we reading the same forum? Where people knowingly purchased a device that didn't have flash or lte or an ad card working at launch but are still *****ing and whining and returning their xoom regardless? What I mean is, those same people will install Honeycomb and complain that google released a lousy product.

My understanding of that article is that Google doesn't feel its ready for phones. It's not that its not ready for tablets. They understand that they won't be able to stop people from using HC on phones, but trying to stave off the inevitable...
this HC thing looks like crap.... oh.. on my phone. In the end.. we are talking about a company here.. a company that needs to keep it's image.. and products.. (or software as you may call it).. as good as possible.
I don't think it's the best move Google could have made, but I think Google should do things in it's best interest to keep itself as a company in good standing. Long and short of it.. if things go south for google.. we'll all be unhappy. Just getting things out for the sake of allowing devs to play doesn't mean its the most sound decision for the company making it.
Yes, I know.. it's 'open source', but it is still a work-product. I think it's also entirely likely this is just a marketing ploy to say 'we told you so'.. and then it will get leaked and everything will go back to normal. But I still think people often forget that this is still a company that has to keep itself together to survive.

Darn you almostinsane, I was just about to post this but you beat me to it!
Its really unfortunate that Google is doing this, whatever happened to a completely open source OS? In my honest opinion I think they should release it to the public and let the various devs have at it and see what can be improved and take those improvements into consideration for the next release of Android. If the OS was only meant for tablets who is to say that x developer can port it to a handheld flawlessly? It would be a HUGE leap ahead for us and for big ol' G.
Either way, it'll happen with or without Google releasing the source as our one dev spacemoose1 has shown us with making a near perfect port to the Samsung tab of honeycomb.
Stinks money is such an issue, Google doesn't really need anymore haha.

Another business reason for this decision: Google may not have programmed Honeycomb well.
An obvious(?) repercussion for grimy source code going public is more bashing of Honeycomb's alleged "beta-ness". The more app developers that use the ...poisonous open-source code, the more ...poisoned apps there will be.
Or, they want to curb full-blown Honeycomb from appearing on devices other than the Xoom for just a little longer.

you're right. I just hate that its true. Your sig shows you remember the G1 days when we were all just so happy about what our phone COULD do. It's gotten a lot whinnier around here since then.

As a ROM enthusiast; yea this sucks. Business it's understandable; but as the former it doesn't make me happy.
My NC sorely needs a aosp honeycomb, HC's tablet interface is superior to even CM7 on it.
Honestly though it's a lot of speculation here on why, but it really just sounds like an excuse (Bad one) to quiet the devs while really being a straight business decision.

How is not releasing honeycomb aosp right away not being open? Would you like all your roms without SD card support right now? Honeycomb is most likely stable enough for normal use for the average consumer and Google had to make footprint in the tablet industry before ipad2 was announced. Things were obviously rushed so i rather wait for them get everything situated. I think this unfortunate news but I'm not gonna cry foul when its something that's probably for the better. Google has proven with each iteration of android they have released source so just be patient

I don't understand the logic here. What alternative are you seeking? Take it back for the Galaxy 10.1? It runs the same OS. Take it back for an iPad? It runs a closed OS.
The AOSP release is delayed ... maybe. Why would you return your Xoom because of this?

How lucky we all are

Just got done reading a petition about motorola's locked bootloader.
While sifting through the comments people made, pleading for motorola to remove their locks. I could only think of how so many members ridicule samsung. does everyone realize that they (samsung) gave us a great phone? That its almost unbrickable.. Sure froyo took a long time, but they admitted publicly that getting froyo out was a disaster and that they will take measures to make sure it won't happen again. And they even attempted to reach out to the community through samsungjohn.. even if it was just an attempt to calm the community, it shows samsung supports the community.. Or at the very least that they care about what we think and say.. Samsung could be a lot more like motorola, and completely overlook the needs and desires of the small percentage of users that our communities consist of.

Not to many people realize how special this phone will be when we can overclock to 1.6ghz, that was mention in engadget i think. But this phone rocks with root and superclean. But the majority of people dont really take the time to explore android phones and all they offer. For example businessmen, my father who is in the insurance business used his droid x for almost everything. My brother rooted it and set up everything in a much more user friendly way. But just when everyone gets upset about no froyo (official) for fascinate, they forget the beauty of android, and thats its able to be edited by developers and that its open source. We arent supposed to have froyo yet most likely every fascinate owner on this forum has froyo.

Not to nitpick... but I'd like to just add a little bit of an aside here. There has been no official release of Froyo, which means that according to Samsung and Verizon, we shouldn't have it. (of course, some one will speak up and say "leaked builds are just a sneaky way that samsung gets free public beta testing." To that I say "maybe. But I doubt it.")
Not only that, but most of the cool mods in the dev/themes section are done to precompiled files that have been decompiled, modded, then recompiled, which takes massive amounts of time, and is a dirty process that leaves behind dead code and mismatched signatures. People are jumping through massive hoops to do something because we don't have the source code to edit it directly. Saying that the stock ROM is open, is like saying a jailbroken iPhone is open. It's only "open" because people have poured countless hours working around the restrictions of an already compiled system, using tools that took countless hours to make.
Both of these issues are actually a major gray area of the law, and if a pesky legal team got bored, it's hard to tell what kind of trouble they might be able to stir up (especially when the judicial system is all about $$).
Even after we do get the source code (which we still don't have), there are still lots of binary "blobs" of data that are already compiled, reducing the amount of control we actually have over the hardware devices and proprietary elements of the stock rom.
So Android is mostly open source, but Samsung is only as open as it wants to be. Their delay in releasing the source, bad coding, and use of proprietary code still sets them fairly in the realm of developer unfriendly. They just aren't as bad as some of the others.

I am forever grateful for the dev teams hours spent on this phone to give us something that we shouldnt have. And I agree, I think its all about the money for the phone manufacturers. The nice thing about android is that you dont pay to upgrade, but thats also their downfall because whats in it for samsung if they work hard and release something that is stable for our phones. Loyal customers which is true and a big part of their business. But for the most part, their client base is so huge, our whining doesnt even put a dent in there sales. Furthermore, Verizon doesn't care about releasing the official froyo update because they have you in a 2 year contract. And as bad as the the wait has been to get froyo, I would never switch carriers because ATT is worse IMO, but who knows now that they bought T-Mobile.

I've been debating getting a Bionic but in thinking more and more about it I have to agree with you. my next phone will be the Sgs2. I absolutely love my sgs even if we don't have an official froyo build, the great devs we have have me rocking a super clean voodoo that blows all my friends various moto, htc, etc devices out of the water.
Do I wish verizon and samsung pushed an official froyo build? Sure
will that lack of support stop me from getting my hands on the sgs2? Hell no.

Pretty sure that I'm going for the sgs2 as well. Bottom line: the Fascinate has been the best smart phone I've ever owned (even as only eclair). I enjoy all the flashing of Roms and Kernels too. Its kinda made owning the phone worth it. In other words, not having official release but trying out these leaks is great fun! I'm not nearly as bent out of shape as some others are about the lack of support by Samsung/Verizon. Sure, it would be nice if they were better about software releases but I ain't losing any sleep over it.

just tried to find to weasel my way in in case it's just the front page that is redirecting but can't find anything on there. It looks like Google in miami was the one hosting since it's showing their 404 message and they're redirecting to themselves. Whoever registered it knew what they were doing and were willing to spend a little money in order to cover their tracks.

Don't know about that becuase for buying an .com you need to pay with you credit card so they will only know Who are you, so they will give that info to HTC if they asked...

Could be the result of receiving a "cease and desist" letter. But then again we can speculate all day and never know.

I don't understand why stuff like this happens...Doesn't any of these involved companies realize that leaks, insider info, and other "rougue" information serve to generate hype, and therefor increased interest in their products? Developers are working on THEIR phones, creating and enhancing THEIR crappy code...People get excited on rom drops and RUU leaks!
My Evo currently runs a Sense 3.0 rom, and even though the battery live is pretty lacking (even on extended battery!), I have had the fortunate opportunity to experience what the Evo 3D is going to be like, which changed my mind from keeping the Evo to pre-ordering the 3D, even before I know when the thing actually drops!

There are negatives you're ignoring. How about the fact that some of those leaks have lead to phones bricking?

I doubt they're worried about that, I'm sure they would be glad to brick a few phones through here as long as they catch it before it gets pushed out OTA. The whole having thousands upon thousands of people protesting and harassing you over a leaked ROM though. You already know it got the CEOs attention, and you can bet he's wanting to know why and how it happened.

couple things you might want to consider here:
the percentage of people that get excited about ROM leaks is a very very small part of their user base.
and like matty mentioned, an unfinished code leak with possible very serious bugs does nothing to further their cause, or improve the final product. especially when they are used as ports.
in relation to this, and furthermore, I think it is a great mistake to undervalue and diminish the talents and efforts of the people writing the original source code for these ROMs by calling the work "crappy".
without any insult intended to anyones work here, less than half of the devs here are actually "writing" any code, or improving on the work of the original source writers on a base functional level. debatable, some are, but most are not. with a few exceptions, almost all of the fully functional (imho), awesome (imho) ROMs are based on finished work done by those same original coders.
when a leak drops for the Evo, if it has serious bugs, those bugs most often stay until a gold drops.
(haha, just my two cents. im fulla ****)
all that being said, I am saddened to see a great resource disappear.

What I fail to understand is why people STILL underestimate the power of the "small userbase" that you all seem to well, underestimate?
I said it once and I will say it again, we are the people who show off the stuff these upcoming phones can do by showing people the latest leak that got ported to our phones.
Not one person on this site can say they didn't have some sort of influence on the purchase of someone they know. I find that one hard to believe. and these companies know it. That's why they often do things like sale phones with unlocked bootloaders and such.

Govt. must be crackin down.. a few of the other bootlegger sites I tried to frequent this weekend were shutdown.

There are plenty of devs to keep cynogenmod on our phones.. I think this its going to mean great things from the company that cranks out bleeding edge hardware.. Its great to see a phone maker supporting the dev community. I hope to see cynogen on a samsung out of the box.

You really think the American carriers would be willing to let that happen? International variant is one thing, but we're talking about the same ones that removed the front camrea, cut down the amount of internal storage, and forced bing down our throat. I'm skeptical of whether Samsung has suddenly turned over a new leaf.

what is your problem? Samsung can do whatever they want, and carriers will always try and scscrew with phones. people always expect so much out of things like this. the only thing that will likely come of this is that touchwiz and new phones will maybe get some neat features and performance things, and that's a maybe. they probably won't put cyanogenmod on out of the box phones, not because of some evil carrier conspiracy but because manufacturers all have their own special interfaces and things. Samsung has touchwiz and I doubt that will change.

Regardless of what they do with him, he has a job with a good company doing what he loves to do. Would be great to get a paycheck and benefits doing what he probably did for fun on the outside.
