effect of ADW Launcher on battery life - Galaxy 3 General

hi guys how many of you use adw.launcher . i just started using and its pretty awesome. but how does it affect the battery life? how do i prevent the stock launcher from starting up when i power on the phone?

Just click on the menu button..then a pop up ll come asking for complete this action by twlauncher or adw launcher....there ll be a check option at end just select that and it will become your default launcher....if i m rite yu were askin this only...

I havent seen any significant change in battery life, do what the above guy said (if you haven't already, which I suspect you did even he posted it) and stock won't run

yeah it helped the stock isnt running now. even though i think adw does affect the battery life.

The Helix launcher, the solution to the problems with the battery of the X10.
I think the main problem of the X10's battery consumption is the original launcher, which should have a process that stays resident and eats the battery.
With the Helix launcher, I managed to go from 12/14 hours of battery life up to 36 hours!
is that with your wifi on?
dude, what version of it are you using?
where can I found Helix Launcher for X10?

The bottom one?
Correct you want HelixLauncherDonut.
I'm trying it now, I can get about 16 hours with moderate use on standard Home.

my Blackberry 9700 with all IMs, weahter app, emails sync... uses only less than 8% over night.

Best Regards
I debranded my fone to R1fa016 hoping to address the battery problem.. it started hopeful but went downhill after..
My standard usage waz switchin 3g on when needed, wifi at home here and there, bluetooth off, gps off unless needed and it used to last only like 10-13hrz.
However i saw option on wifi settings to never sleep and after seein mixed reviews online i thought id try it and i must say im really impressed..
Yesterday, i used 3g for bout an hr, a few quick callz, some msgz, about 2hrz of listenin to music and random phone usage from 11.30am to around half 1 in mornin today and battery waz around 70%.. then used wifi after for about hr n half and i happen to knock off cause i waz tired so wifi waz stil runnin til 11.30am and ma battery was at 45%.
I dnt like low battery so i charged it extra 20minz before I went work which brought battery life upto 62%. Today ive used about 2hrz of 3g, 3hrz of music, alot of callz n msgz and writing this long ass essay lolz and im down to 7%
Im happy with my new battery life.. and sorry 4 the boring essay but hope it helps!

what exactly is this app, where do i configure its settings? does it run on top of my other home screen?
It's an alternative home app with more features. Download the donut version from http://anonym.to/?http://helixproject.ruqqq.sg/, install and then when you press home choose Helix. Ideally set as default then reset the phone to make sure you have the default home unloaded.
cool, I've played around with it, pretty neat, will it really help battery life if i put more home screens and running widgets?

It could do. The theory is the default home is bugged and drains battery. If Helix works better then it should use virtually no CPU when idle. A buggy widget could drain battery just as easily, but if you use more homescreens then the only difference should be in RAM usage I think.
guys, how to I get it onto my x10?

Download the application from here: Helix Launcher Donut 1.2, Put it anywhere on your sd card. Download a program such as astro that can install .apk files. Open astro, find the helix launcher in it and tap it. Select install.
this is really saving my battery, very little battery drain after 8 hours!

[Q] Help me to choose BETTER Battery Saver APP. :)

I bought my Xperia X10 last August 18 '10. I didn't have the initial charge that is 4 hours because X10 charging have automatic stop when the battery is full.
I charged it in the morning and it run for 24 hours just SMS and phone calls.
Then I try to install Advance Task killer and Helix Launcher. Task killer really makes my battery WORST! Instead of 24 hours life it became almost 12 hours only.. Helix is most probably not working. (I think.)
I uninstalled Advanced Task killer and no difference..
I would like to install Battery Life saver application but I don't know what Launcher fits best. I tried Helix but I think I doesn;t work better for my X10.
I envy other users that there phone last for 2-3 days. I want my phone just like that..
Any suggestions what launcher or application? and where can I download it for free?
Thank you so much XDA DEVELOPERS!
wat firmware version are u on ? i found that it took 15-20 full charges for the battery to really break in...as well dont use task killers, they arent necessary. I used juicedefender for a bit, but didnt really see a difference. another helpful thing you should try is to restart your phone after charging
another app you could try is setcpu, however that requires root
Try adw launcher
Sent from my rooted 026 X10i using swype via Xda
My suggestion is root the phone, use ADW launcher and uninstall any task killer apps like ATK or JD. My X10 lasts 2 days with moderate usage, that includes games and music too. It'll last three if I only use it for texting and calling. Hope this helps
Agreed, ditch the "powersaving" apps, they kill standby time. Also check how synchronisation is set up, constantly waking up to update facebook, twitter, mail et cetera will kill your battery.
Can only agree with the other posts, and just to re-affirm that you need to cycle the battery a good few times to get the best from it and three days is still early days. ADW is a great launcher, you don't need to be rooted if that's out of your comfort zone.
My way is NOT using any task killers or battery savers, leave all that to android! Do 3 full charge/decharge cycles and one every ones in a while. And ofc 2-3h of youtube will drain your battery.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
quite interesting point about task killing app.
I heard in both side while app-killing save a batt and drain a batt.
May be people are in difference behavior. and their using s/w is also difference.
Any specific thread for this?
My first (few) days for x10 is like you, twice or triple charge a day, I even bought spare batt. I decided to root and upgrade to the lastest firmware, clean all startup app, clean all scheduled sync and turn on juicedefender with new home-app. that was big improve from 7-10HR to 20-25HR with moderate use.
You should give a try
Retracted: I misread the post mentioning JuiceDefender as being about ATK. My bad.
I currently only use juice defender, seems to do the trick. Task killers made no difference to me.
Research how android works and you will see task killers are pointless. Just stop things doing automatic updating instead.

How can I root the phone? where can I download ADW Launcher for free? Whew I hope my X10 will be better like yours
i get about 20 hours of fairly heavy usage before charge however i am on build number R2BA020, running helix launcher and setcpu (screen off @ 524mhz scaling on demand)
my approx usage a day:
50 texts
10 emails
hour on phone calls
wifi usually connected
gps off
update interval usually the longest duration
30-45mins of web browsing
@ ddewbofh : Where can I find it? Sorry for the stupid question. I'm starting to learn for now.
@ suzed : I already downloaded ADW Launcher, does it really have automatic task manager? If I use it, it will affect my battery or not?
@ Tjotte : I want battery saver because I can't bring my charger always. I already had 3 cycles of full charge/decharge, still no change.
@ Cebees : How will i root and upgrade the firmware? Can I do it all by myself? Do I have to reformat my X10?
Thanks for the replies! It really helps me a lot. I'm still observing how ADW Launcher works for me. Hope for your comments and suggestions again (sorry for the poor english)
I want to clarify something. Is ADW Launcher a battery saver or just for themes? My friends says it's not a battery saver. I want to know, I'm confused.

It's a great launcher with themes, it's not specifically designed to save battery.
Is it okay for my X10 to Full charge/decharge while using ADW Launcer?

Yeah, it's no problem. ADW is a normal app, it works the same way as the standard launcher.

Someting interesting I found about CM6 ROM...

Not sure if this is the culprit of my battery drain even if I used setCPU (with screen off profile) and/or UltimateJuice, I still get somewhat not too good battery life on CM6. So today just surfing the net and found GDE a new home screen which pretty slick, and decided to try it out. So after running GDE for a while, my batter seems to be better for some reason.
So my thought would be that ADW launcher is the culprit because after GDE, I don't use ADW anymore and when I was with ADW, batter seems bad.
Anyone can confirm this?

I'd like to see the answer to this.
Although if you'd like a TRUE battery saving ROM, try Fresh's 3.2.0.0 (donators only) that is based off the HTC's latest 3.28.651.1 build along with a MUCH IMPROVED HTC kernel (BIG DIFERENCE ON BATTERY LIFE, AND MORE STABILIZED with Youtube, video recording, etc)
So as of now I'd prefer using Fresh when it comes to battery life (using ADW launcher), but when it comes to toying around...I like CM6 simply because it is SENSE-LESS.
I am getting horrid battery life on CM6 as well, seems my wifi isn't letting the phone sleep.
Had to switch to another ROM, but I really don't want to use sense...so I hope I can figure this out. After testing out a different ROM with ADW installed, I'll reload cyanogen and replace ADW with Zeam or something.
well there are ways you could test this out more. you could run a true battery test something like running a movie from 100% till it shuts down with adw and then with GDE and compare etc. I think it is a big leap to switch homes and then say adw was the cause of your battery drain without any actual test or data.
I have gotten amazing battery life using ADW and i have gotten horrible life depending on what i have running my use etc.
for those that dont want to use sense you can remove sense from your phone for the most part. while it isnt asop you dont have to use/have sense running if you remove a few apks or in Damage Control its as s imple as selecting to ban sense and rebooting

Widgets/home screen effects on batt life.

short answer... Yes. like a @#^$!%*[email protected]$%*..... especially if u have widgets that update using the internet, or at time intervals. you need to have these set to lower variables sometimes that will imrpove battery life, and download Green Power from the market, it will turn off your net connection when you arnet using the phone (beware if u use gv for texting cuz you wont get text unless your screen is on)
Say you're using LauncherPro, and you also have ADW downloaded. If ADW has widgets, would they still be updating and reducing battery life even if you've killed the ADW task and you're using LauncherPro? Or does it not waste battery life if the ADW task is ended?
I've always worried that using one launcher and having a whole bunch of widgets running on another launcher would reduce battery life.

Yes it will reduce battery life because you are effectively running two launchers and two sets of Widgets at the same time. Make sure you disable/remove all Widgets on the launcher you are not using.

Of course having widgets will cut down on battery. But if you don't need all 7 home screen, I suggest you cut down on the pages a bit. Hope this helped

You extend battery life by adjusting the update interval for various widgets. For instance, do you really need the weather to update every hour?
I cut it down to three with no widgets that update besides my, weather clock, thanks!

Battery stats show as always awake, why?

Hey I was at work today nd noticed tht not only was my phones battery lower then usual but it was kinda hot too it was in my ba ck pocket nd I was walking around alot so there was ventilation I had to put it in airplane mode so it wouldn't die one the ride home and I just checked the stats and it shows my phone as awake 100% of the time but that can't be right am I reading it wrong or something.
Thanks in advance for any help.

There were two apps tht said wakelock above it poweramp nd psn hermes app tht shows my friends list for my playstation
Sent from my Atrix-4G, stock 2.3.4 (now rooted)
Yea that means those apps are what keeps running in the background. Also power amp has an option under settings where you can have the service run even when you're not using it maybe you highlighted that check box,if you un-check it it might take care of poweramp.
I noticed things like facebook and other apps are huge memory hogs and need to run in the background so if you like using them then you will have to leave them unless you want to remove them.
Go to battery setting on your phone and set it to battery saver. Also screen brightness is important.Task killers also help shut down apps that you leave open and try advanced task killer by re child.
I deleted tht app nd I think I might delete poweramp too everything else I've either been doin or did but im thinking of unlocking the bootloader which in turn will delete all the apps its always good to restart from fresh so u know wary didn't really need in the first place nd my brightness is always on 0 lol even at that ll its brighter then my friends inspire
