Thanks... - G Tablet Android Development

Picked up a new G tablet today from Sears. The stock rom was unbelievably awful, but I read up here before buying so I was ready. I am now running VEGAn with flash and Android market and it rocks!!!
Huge props to a great community

Agreed. I did the same thing, read and researched here, then made the decision. Thanks XDA community.

Bought the grab. The playscool interface OEM was disappointing... flashed to tnt light 2.2. Updated 2.4. Today. I must say the tablet is incredibly fast and flexible... many thanks to the forum moderators and many replyers for knowledge.

Vibrant forum dying?

Before I get to my point I want to thank all the devs for there hard work that they do in their spare time. They do it for free and hope that some of us donate to make it a little more worth their while.
Maybe it's just me or does it seem like the development thread is slowing down. I've noticed lately that most of the stuff coming in now is ports from other phones and updates for past builds. Theres not alot of new stuff rolling out. EDT seems to stay busy, but what happend to TW? I would have put money on having a stable 2.3 rom out by now to use as a daily driver. We also lost Eugene and leaked samsung builds seem to not be coming out as often.
Is our phone entering the twilight years? Are the dev's losing interest and working on other phones. I've played around with some of the new phones like the atrix and thunderbolt and i'm sure they could be a lil more interesting to build for.
I hope i'm wrong and 5 min. after I post this a new 2.3 rom comes out. It was fun when you flashed a new trigger rom and 1 day later the new bionix came out. This is a really nice phone and you have to really try hard to brick it. It's almost like Samsung designed it to be modded. Hopefully the devs can get inspired again or some new blood comes in to give us something new.
I think we need to be patient. One day there will be a leak for gb and things will fire up again.

just relax man every phone goes through spells of development. I see you only joined in april so just wait, Whitehawkx had a mostly working gb port working minus the gps and we have CM7 and MIUI support now as well.
Be patient this phone is amazing and im certain development will continue for it for some time.
In the mean time flash a miui beta or try out the EDT roms you wont be disappointed.
Lets not forget Simply Galaxy v3 a 2.3.3 rom. Yes still developing but stable.
Once we get a proper kernel you'll see more Gingerbread roms as for right now you have a ton of quality 2.2.1 and 2.2 roms to chose from.
Of course the OP is welcome to start developing on their own and contribute.

Yes, but point being is that we're pretty much at the mercy of Samsung & T-Mobile to release a 2.3.
We will not have a kernel source to play with until it releases for I9K, and even then we'll have issues for a while. And we won't have one with rockin' battery life until we get a leak or source.
But yeah, there really isn't much developing coming from anyone except the guys working on kernels & people like Whitehawk, sonique, and of course Untermench who actaully modify the code. Because there's not much else to do.
Things are winding down. There are only a handful of people around who have the knowledge and inclination to roll their own ROMs.
As newer devices with more capabilities are introduced (the dual core LG G2X will be in T-mobile stores April 20th), then the older ones lose favor.
That is how it is with Android. Your 8 month old phone becomes old. After 15 months its an antique!

I actually have tried to develop a theme to post here but there is so much involved with all the editing and i simply don't have the time. I really wish I did. Trust me I have a great respect for what the dev's do once I started playing around with just a theme. I can only imagine what a rom would take. Plus I can honestly say i'm not skilled enough to put out a quality rom any time soon, if ever. I'm really not complaining about effort or quantity from the devs, i've just noticed lately there seems to be a dull in the dev section. I was just wondering why.
Eugene is back. He said on twitter that he bought a Vibrant. You can see evidence, his newest Ginger Clone version has already had 4 updates.
Sure a lot of the development is for 2.2 and 2.2.1 roms, but I'd say we're easily WAY more active than we used to be. We've now got plenty of choices of roms, kernels, and themes. We've also got new people joining the Vibe development scene. There's an experimental Gingerbread Sense that's just started testing. We are now officially supported by the MIUI team. I see new things happening every day. Development doesn't always happen overnight, but I believe we've still got lots of good things look forward to.
Slowing down? I still remember when there was only one rom in the dev section. Now there's a new one each week, and at least one update every day.

I still dont understand what people are trippin on. We have some blazing fast 2.2.1 ROMs and a few gingerbread ROMs that are stable. What functionality are people looking for int he Vibrant that we dont have?

Haha yeah I remember that too. But ROMs every week != good. Most of them are ports and aren't stable.
I really wish we could have AOSP roms so we could have TRUE development going on. None of this hack and patch stuff.

Why do we keep having these threads. I rooted my phone late last year. I have been more then satisfied. I'm just glad to have a faster better phone than what I had originally. Just have some damn patience.

Keep in mind the psychology at work here. Most of the people who get all angsty about this are rom comsumers, and not active dev's, themers, or kangers.
It appears that what we are experiencing now is a lot of cross development, taking existing roms from the international i9000 and porting them to our universe thanks to the availability of kernel source for 2.2. So the nature of activity has changed, but the scope has actually expanded.
This phone (thanks to dev work here @ XDA) stopped sucking ass A VERY LONG TIME AGO. Gains to be had at this point are largely cosmetic, so there is the appearance that improvements are not coming at the rate they used to. The fact of the matter is that quantitative improvements are largely unnecessary at this point.
As a "consumer" myself (I gave up on linux development a long time ago, owing to my own inherent laziness) I find the current state of affairs quite amazing. Your mileage may vary. YMMV.
What's funny is that people much prefer a broken ROM that gets fixed rather than a fully working ROM out of the box ^_^

Well said. It's just like what happened when I had the N1, people started to complain because the roms were so stable there weren't many updates being released.

i dont know either...
2.3 probably WILL be faster than 2.2 (duh) but besides the speed, we have everything else.
All thats going to be different is when you go into settings about it will say 2.3 gingerbread
instead of 2.2 or 2.2.1
the rest is good.
im on miui, and i switch between cm7 and miui once in a while
im never going back to 2.2.1

Very true. People want updates, but they don't know why.
If its not being updated as fast as it used to, chances are it doesn't even really NEED updating.

Well said. Someone just asked on one of my 2.2.1 threads why it was so quiet and my only thought was because everything works. Here it is everything has been fixed there should be nothing left to discuss here flash and enjoy.

That's the point for me. I stopped updating at KA6. Sure KA7 came out not long after, but why? I had been updating daily/weekly until then, always fighting some bug or flaw. With KA6, I flashed the ODIN version, removed bloatware myself, added the round battery icon, power off menu, and that was *it*. More recently I've updated the Kernel to Overstock 2.x and voodoo FS, but I'm not even sure why I need voodoo. Can't tell a difference in the real speed of the phone.
I didn't take the phone apart to add FFC like so many did (and who also never use it in most cases), so I don't need improved support for that... and themes, well... I guess there is that, not much going on in KA6 themes -- but that doesn't affect the use of the phone at all.
KA6 for me has been fast, stable, and by far the best on battery life of any I've touched yet. There are few if any programs out there that require 2.3 or higher, and until that is the case, why change?
The atmosphere is totally different than it was last fall, when the rest of the world was going 2.2 and Vibrant was stuck on 2.1. At that time, there were an increasing number of programs that simply would not work on Eclair - plus Froyo had been promised as an update. Now we have everything Samsung promised, and really if you're running a lightly modded ROM, it *is* bug-free.
So... until I am forced to consider 2.3, I'm sticking with KA6.. It is nice after years of constantly flashing upgrades on the HTC Vogue (wm6), then the G1, then flashing the MT3G constantly, then constantly flashing the Vibrant, to actually pick up my phone and have it work the same way it did yesterday.

no devs on atrix

I had my atrix since the release and i'm now starting to question if i should keep it. Right now i'm running 2.3.4 and the battery is horrible. I browse other phone forums and i see that they have multiple roms different roms with most multiple different developers and have made actual developments and the biggest development we have is barely functional. It seems that most of the developments on the atrix are theme wise from the same devs, no disrespect to devs working on the atrix because i know they have worked hard. And i heard rumors that the atrix community doesn't have much developers to begin with, so the question is should i move on to a different phone?
you need to hold your horses buddy.
a phone has been donated to CM team.work should start soon.
check out the Atrix section on rootzwiki forum, AOSP is being built.
we have CWM - check the dev section
we just got an over clock - check the dev thread
Please do not ask for ETA's.

We had a locked bootloader until very recently. This is why there aren't many ROMs yet. Gingerbread is set for a July (hopefully) release. With the Gingerbread kernel source, ROM developers will have a lot more to work with. At the moment, there's only 1.2.6 (old 2.2.1 Froyo) source available.
Be patient! Of course, if you're loaded with cash, you can go buy additional/replacement phones. For now, the Atrix is arguably the best piece of hardware on AT&T's network.
Also we only saw the bootloader being unlocked recently...

New to android....loving the nite! !

Been an apple fanboy for over 4 years now. Jailbroke several times to try and enhance the device but got sick of the cat & mouse between the devs and apple. Its overwhelming whats available on android and the customisation available.
A jailbreak on the iphone would only last 3
/4 months until apple released a patch so my Q to yawl is if i root my device how often is there a patch or update from droid that makss you go back to the factory firmware?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
Use the Search Forum function. "loving the nite"? seriously? Gratz though
Welcome from the crapple grip!
From the big ole Note
Patch the update so the update won't patch you.
Once your rooted thats it. When a new firmware upgrade is availiable give the devs a day and should be ok to upgrade. Your new friend will be mobile and pc odin. Rooting ur phone is easy just follow dr ketan thread. And samsung are not the fastest at releasing updates anyway. I had an iphone 4 and jailbreaking was a ball ache and a waiting game. Rooting is a formality in comparison. Enjoy ur phone it is awsome but read up before doing anything and you will be fine. Android is very addictive.

Your thinking about it wrong. One of the great things about android is you don't have to use a current official build and just root it. Try cyanogenmod9 for your phone in the note dev section... you think you love your phone now? Just wait!

Dude...no fail AT ALL
I know exactly what you mean and I've been there as well.
You can root and run custom firmwares and customize kernels and whatever you want and Samsung or Google will not interfere and will not patch you or force any update on you that would undo your mods
Just be careful to read the instructions really carefully and ask as much as you need, people will help you, no matter how little you know of Android. With all this freedom also comes the possibility to do something stupid to your phone and, obviously, you wouldn't want that.
If you're feeling brave and up to it, I also recommend imilka's CyanogenMod 9 port. So far it's the best firmware I've had on my Note and you also have the advantage of running a stock, non-bloated version of the latest Android
If you've got any questions, I'll answer them here or on Cyanongen's thread, as best I can
Cheers and happy flashing!!
I feel the same. I went from a xda paradise on my WinMo phone, to the handcuffed existence of the iPhone and since I was tied in for 2 years I was stuck with the sh*t box device.
I hated it so much I eventually bought the Note SIM free to escape from Apple's nanny state! Welcome to the free world buddy - its amazing!
Thanks very much for the feedback guys much appreciated !

Ordered my TF300

HEY GUYS! I just placed my order on Amazon for my TF300 and I can't wait. It comes in Tuesday and until then I will be spending my time in the forums trying to find out what I want to do to it.
I am coming from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It was a great tablet and the community was great. I was looking through this one and, to be honest, this forum looks a little confusing with the different versions for the different countries. The one I rodered is the TF300 B1-WH. I just wanna make sure that I can get what I need for this model from these forums.
So please stop by and tell me what you think and give some pointers. THANKS!

Take your time, do some reading and plan on a little time to verify there are no hardware issues before you go beyond stock. Most units selling today are on JB bootloader but if yours happens to come with ICS then consider nvflash.
Good Luck and Welcome!
Probably this is the best guide IMO - The best ROM is also BAKED - I'm currently on a test release which is amazing and BAKED just has all these AOKP customizations with the best stability and battery life of the AOSP Roms out there
also Ubuntu Touch is being ported but atm it's really, really a preview - not much working and not really stable!
thanks! I was so worried that since I was getting it off of Amazon that it was going to be some weird chinese version and almost useless. lol. I was able to find the 32GB refurb for 250. I am pretty stoked.
I was looking at the slim bean since that is what I run on my SIII but will wait for a slightly more stable version to come out. Any word on a paranoid ROM?
CleanROM is awesome. I definitely suggest giving it a try. We also have Paranoid Android. If you want to overclock you will want to use the 2.54 version with the modified Unter kernel in the 3rd post down from the OP under EXTRAS. There is a 2.99 version but its still a beta.
I ran the PA ROM for a few months and its nice. CleanROM performs better though.
I've got the 32gb version and love it. The dock is nice too if you ever decide to get one.

I to have cleanROM and it is simply awesome.
If i were you though i would give it a little while before you install custom ROMs just incase you have hardware issues and the tablet needs to go back for repair.
Then root the tablet and install a custom ROM. You won't regret it!

Noob intro, and a THANK YOU

I've been a lurker on these forums for a couple of months.....about the time I purchased a couple of android tablets (Galaxy Tab 2-P5110, and Asus TF300T)......From the start I hated the stock rom(s), and once I found these forums, I've been having a blast! I've pretty much gone through all the Roms listed for the devices I own, and just a couple of days ago found/installed the Sensonic rom on my P5110.....LOVE IT! I'm waiting to see if a version for the TF300T is offered.
Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU, to all the devs and Mods who work so hard to offer roms, tweaks, and tools that go far beyond stock! My hat is off to you!!! :good:
