Hi there, My nexus one has had the power button failure problem twice before and this is the 3rd time. They only repair it and send me the repaired device and all in all its taken them weeks to get it fixed for me.
I don't want to send it away again to be repaired (I asked for a new phone and they said no).
So I'm wondering what the solution is? I've heard theres a way I can power it on without the power and use the trackball to wake the phone instead? is this true and how do I go about doing so?

I got mine back after the same problem last week. They didn't replace everything, but I think they still replaced the mainboard as it now has a new imei. I am using an app called lock suppress that allows you to unlock using the trackball and doesn't require the phone to be rooted.

It should power up.
Just exchange it for another one!
My power button is currently out for the second time, I just haven't gotten around to calling them. They fixed it in two days the first time and it also had a new IMEI number when it came back. I get the feeling that this is a design issue that will never be corrected and all they can do is keep repairing them. I bought mine in March so I may wait a couple of months to send it back right before the warranty ends.
I wasn't aware of rtsp.se's method, I boot mine by plugging it in and taking the battery out and putting it back in. Almost the same thing, but I usually have to remove/replace the battery twice before it boots.
What I'm currently doing to lock/unlock is using the trackball wake/unlock built into Cyanogen. That may be no help if you're not rooted and interested in installing Cyanogen.
To lock it, I found a cool widget called "invisible lock widget" which, as the name implies, is an invisible widget that you tap to lock the phone. I have a minimal homescreen so I added a 4x1 invisible lock widget to it then resized it to 4x2 with LauncherPro (it's the same as having two 4x1 widgets except no dead space in between) and now I can lock the phone by tapping anywhere on the lower half of the screen.

Okay I've been having this issue since I got my Nexus a couple of weeks ago. Several times a day I'll go to take it out of my pocket or pick it up off a table and when I go to hit the unlock button at the top nothing happens, the screen never wakes up. The trackball will still be lighting up as always but nothing on the screen. I have to pull the battery in order to get it to reboot so I can use it.
Due to this issue and getting dust under my screen I called HTC for a replacement. I got my replacement yesterday and got it all set up again. Within the first 2 hours I picked it up off my table and it wouldn't wake up. And this has probably 4 times since I got the phone yesterday.
Is ANYONE have this issue? I think it's a little weird it happened on my original device and now on my replacement.
Never happened to mine so far that I have noticed. Not that this information helps you any but...
ive bought 2 for me and one for a friend. None have any issues at all so far
I haven't had this problem...
just for the hell of it have you tried restoring it.

Maybe you're just not pushing the button hard enough, or you need to find a "sweet spot."
I've never had this issue. Is it possible that you have installed an application that could be the issue?
i had this problem too for the first time last night. My notification light was flashing... pressing power button did not wake up.... I even long pressed power buttoin in the hope of getting the shutdown option, but nothing... i did a quick google search to see if there was a way of soft resetting, but couldnt find one, so pulled out the battery.

No I only bought one of them but had to do an exchange on it because of it not waking up and the screen was getting dust under it. The exchange I got in the mail is still doing the wake up thing.
It's not due to pushing the button wrong I know that much haha. I'm a pretty skilled button presser

Have you rooted either of them? I'm thinking it's some type of software glitch that might be fixed once new ROMs get cooked up but I've been holding off on rooting to preserve my warranty because of this issue.
Never had that problem.
Just so the forum doesn't just fill up with complaints.

The one with the issues is rooted. I am using stock rom because I am sending it back soon.

iv been having this prob with the mt3g, tmobile is sending me a new phone im thinking its the htc keyboard apk or the nexus news widget apk, i have never had this problem till i put these two apps on my mt3g
Oh man! I thought I was the only one with this issue! It sometimes a couple of times a day and it's extremely inconvenient! I thought maybe my phone had gotten too hot and it froze or something but I could never figure out why it really happened. Mine is also rooted so maybe that's the issue? I hope someone finds the cause of this problem and even better, a solution, soon. It's pretty annoying, and one of the very few things that I don't like about my new partner.
I must be a lucky sob,beacause my nexus has no problems at all, working vib, no dust under screen, all buttons work, no problems at all (knocks on wood)
I'm having one issue and it can be annoying. Sometimes my screen just doesn't respond and if it does it's miles off. like if I press in the middle, the menu pops up as if the calibration is off by an inch or so. The annoying part is when a call comes in and I can't slide to answer which makes me miss a proper button.
My N1 is not rooted and a reboot normally sorts it out.
Edit: I forgot to mention that this almost always happens after I plug the charger like it is now arrrrgghhhhhhh.

my nexus one went bad (the power button was shot) and I sent it in on tuesday. well yesterday I had a notice from fedex on my door because of a delivery attempt. today I received my nexus one . I had the modified bootloader and custom rom and it returned with a locked bootloader and new screen (i think)

Also how long have you had your nexus one before the power button went shot?
Mine crapped out on me. They sent another overnight great service.

What number did you call at HTC? Also, did they ask you about the bootloader being locked or not? Also, did they mention if they have the right to charge you back if they find out your bootloader has been unlocked?

It's my understanding that if it is a hardware issue having nothing to do with the OS/bootloader then they'll help you out, even if you're rooted/unlocked.
Mine started looking like it was on its way out, then I flashed CM6 - problem solved - 0 day turn around. Not sure I was having the same issue as you but that power button sure was acting strange. At first I thought it was hardware but I ruled that out because long pressing it worked every time, even if the menu showed up and the screen shut off before I could make a selection, it was I obvious that the button itself definitely worked. Then I read a feature of CMmod that read "debounce power button", tried that rom, been a okay ever since - not one hiccup

This could definitely help when the button is getting a little flaky (dirty/worn) ... the 'bounce' could cause the phone to wake up and go right back to sleep so fast that it looks like nothing happened.
A great feature to add ... but, then again, most of the stuff Cyanogen (and the rest) put in is pretty smart.
I enable the trackball wake up in the CM mod to reduce ware on the power switch.
So the power button on my nexus one completely stopped working. I shut off the device and could not turn it back on. After popping battery in an out a few times I finally somehow, got it to turn on. Now i'm going to need to make sure it stays on all the time.
Now my question. To me this looks like a manufacturers hardware defect, so would the unlocked bootloader and me being the second owner of the device make any sort of difference here?
Any other way to turn the device on when its completely shut off?
Update #1: 7/30/10
Called HTC, then i got transferred to Nexus one department then back to HTC. Described my problem to everyone. They were nice to say they will get that taken care of. Told him i got the phone as a gift, updated my info, and I'm doing the swap option. He also said that any "physical" damage to the device might be charged, aka broken screen or w.e, regular wear and tear is fine. Mentioned nothing at all about software. I'm flashing back to stock either way. Will update as time goes
Same power button problem. Haven't checked into warranty with bootloader being unlocked, but if you plug up the usb cord, wait for the little led light to come on, take out the battery and put it back in as soon as the light goes off, then it will power the phone back on.
Ah i guess that's how i got lucky with turning it on then.

No worries with HTC. I was a second owner of my first N1. I traded my Iphone 3GS for it. Unlocked the bootloader first 10 minutes i had the thing. Few weeks later. I saw dust under the screen. Called up HTC. Gave them IMEI. Told them my girl got it for me for my birthday. They gave me an address.(original owners). I said nope and gave them mine. Went through the process. I had them put a hold on my credit card for $525. They sent a replacement phone next day. I packed mine up and sent it back. I had to do this twice because the replacement after 3 weeks started getting dust again and i could tell the power button wasnt really working well also.
Now im a second owner of another N1. I traded my tmobile N1 for a ATT N1. woot.
You can also root the phone and put trackball wake on it....also, when the phone is off completely, the trackball WILL boot it - tested this myself today.

Honestly when my phone was off I tried booting by pressing trackball and holding, just pressing and nothing. How did you do it? is there a specific process? I already have trackball wake selected thankfully before this even happened.
Another question is, how in the hell would i get into recovery or any of those functions now?

You download quick boot and user that to get into recovery or bootloader.
I ended up receiving the new nexus one, but i sold it already so yea

so, My n-1 had an "intermittent" power button problem.
so tonight, I had sent a text to someone, and saw that I had no response, so I clicked on the power button, nothing.
I charged phone, and the light goes to green when fully charged.
I can't soft, or hard reset the phone, since I'm guessing the power button isn't working or something?
The last thing that I had noticed, was that google goggles had updated itself.
Also, plugging it into the computer isn't doing anything either. There was no overheat issue, and I'm running vanilla stock froyo not rooted.
any ideas on what to do before I call HTC tomorrow?
edit: weird, I finally got it to turn on, by plugging in the usb, and taking out, and reinserting the battery a few times. I guess, if it does it again, back to HTC it will go.... but it still seems that the power button itself is not working.

power button has definitely failed. I downloaded widgetlocker as a temporary fix.... if anyone has any ideas (i.e. hard resetting the phone etc.) let me know before I call HTC please.
It's a HW failure, you should get it replaced. And on the next one install a ROM that supports trackball wake, that'll leave your power button much less prone to damage.
Downloaded no wake and sent in for a new phone. Luckily 2:00 am hawaii time is 7:00 am est.
Edit. Program is no lock lol.

Yes, but swapping Roms would kill the warranty and not enable me to get one repaired / replaced. ( yes I know most people with unlocked bootloaders got theirs fixed, but I'm not that lucky in life )

You can root without unlocking the bootloader and voiding the warranty. I never thought I'd do it, but I did and am so happy. It's like I have a whole new phone.

All my winmo phones needed new roms do I swapped like crazy. N1 was so solid out of the box I didn't feel the need to. On a side note. I'm still waiting for a shipping email. I wonder if they are out of stock?

You could always get a replacement flex cable including a new power button.

Its been almost a year and my power button is fine. Don't worry about things that might or might not happen
Remove the battery, plug in the USB/power cable and put the battery back in. Something like that anyway, I've already forgotten how I did it 2 months ago (lots happening here in Japan, many things aren't that important anymore in my memory! haha), and got my power button repaired anyway, but it worked.

Agreed. I believe only a very limited number of phones have this failure. Don't worry about it, if you've made it a year without issue, it is very unlikely you're going to ever see it.
I'm pretty sure this problem only affected the initial batch of N1's. So only those who bought in January would have this problem.
If you have the flat volume rockers you don't have an initial N1. Apparently the first lot have volume buttons that stuck out more and some other visible changes that I can't remember. They should be on these forums somewhere.
But correct me if I'm wrong...
My power button is almost dead, but the combination of trackball wake (with cyanogenmod) and screen off and lock (market app) assigned to long-press search is quite painless.
The only remaining problem is iPhone users making fun of you when you explain the issue to them ...

With roms like CM7 (vol- equals wake from sleep) and Quick Boot, the pwr button and TB almost become unneeded

I've had 2 power button cables die on me.
one, I sent back, and when I got a replacement, it died on me within a month. I still have a second n1 which is ok.
basically, if your button starts to get to the point where you have to do multiple pushes, then cable failure is imminent.
you can get the phone to turn on, by plugging in the charging cable, and removing/ inserting the battery. after that, you need to have no lock or some other way of unlocking your screen without the power button.
I just ordered a new flex cable today, I was going to sell off parts for my other n1, but figure that I might as well fix it.
I plugged my N1 in to charge while it was off and it booted into recovery. Not sure if this is related to Amon_Ra or not, but I figured it wasn't a bad thing. The DZ does this too, so I'm getting used to it

I guess some SW has to control the charge. It's a function that is done in the stock recovery (phone charging when it's off), on many Android phones.
I ordered three of the AT&T N1's - one for myself when they were first released, then two more (for my wife and a friend) just before they stopped selling them. None of us have had a problem with the power button, and none of us use trackball wake.
