Hi everyone,
I just purchased a used Saphire (a Vodafone branded Magic, 32B, from a german) and i want to upgrade it's ROM before i give it to my girl (it's going to be her first smartphone ).
I was wondering if anyone can recommend me a good ROM for it. I definitely want HTC Sense to be on there, and if possible i'd prefer a 2.2 Froyo ROM.
It must be stable without bugs, cause my girl don't know squat about smartphones and i can't be there all the time to troubleshoot.
I've been looking around a bit in the development thread, but as i'm an old time WM user i'm completely unfamiliar with ROM flashing on Androids.
Can anyone give me a good recommendation for a stable ROM with Sense?
I'd really appreciate any tips

funny, but when i saw this thread, i noticed 97 views (in other words, 97 times people looked at the thread) but no replies...
probably because dont really think there's anything such as a "stable" modded rom
sure, many are quite stable but no modded rom (imho) is ever going to be 100%, fully, undeniably bug-proof
and adding in the sense requirement, well, good luck..
if it was me, i'd use cyanogenmod 6.1, or just stick to the stock 2.2 you can get from yer carrier
in fact, if i was giving it to someone else who cant do maintenance on their rom, i'd definitely stick with stock
I have recently bought a Vodafone UK Magic (32B Board), yesterday did a massive software rebuild on it and now have a stable Froyo 2.2 (Gio's Mod). Check out this thread for details (look at the last page for details of my setup before and after upgrade).

You've got a good point there with a stock ROM. If set it up for her with it's stock ROM (1.6) for now.
And there is a stock 2.2 ROM for the sapphire (which wouldn't require rooting and alike)? This one 's got a 32B board (GSM/Europe).
Stock 2.2 would also be great performancewise i guess.

these are the shipped roms for the sapphire 32b, perhaps your carrier's 2.2 OTA is in there
Thanks for the replies everyone!
But as of today it seems the question was unnecessary, because Vodafone today announced that they're going to roll out 2.2.1 to all their HTC Magic users in the UK and the rest of europe!
Ain't that great news?

Mine just updated itself yesterday: the notification for the bootloader update came in around noon, and after that it updated to 2.2.1.
It's a great update....first few minutes it renders the phone a bit slow. After taking it some good use it becomes very snappy
I suspect however that you need a stock ROM to be updatable, and judging from your sig you ain't got that running...
thanks

Ah ok, its true I'm running a custom Froyo ROM right now and loving it. Don't know if I should try the Vodafone update out. Is it really worth it? Hows the vodafone mods on it, I hope they haven't overdone it.
If you've already got Froyo, then i don't see a reason for updating.
They've been very sparse with the Voda bloathware on this update though. You can only tell it's Vodafone by one small app and the boot-splash.

Haha, well I don't want their app and I got rid of their red splash screen recently by flashing via fastboot. Now I've got a nice custom one, wouldn't change it back for anything lol.
Vodafone usually stuffs up the phone's OS, especially Sony phones...
I'm on the 32A with CM6.1 - works quite nice
Did you get the Sense UI with the new Vodafone update?

This question has been in my mind for a while. Is it worth it to flash a Hero rom ? I am currently running cyanogen 4.0.1, wireless tethering is working, Overclock is working as well as Term. It is also wicked fast.
My SPL is .00006 so from my understanding a "Perfect" SPL, although I have root. Maybe am reading the post dates wrong but I thought this would not work. The method I used was 1 click root.
I understand there are some issues with Hero on a MT3G but if i have root and a partitioned (FAT32/EXT3/SWAP) Class 6 SD, would you use a Hero? My personal feeling is wait tell the Official release comes out for the 32A so there maybe a bit more to work with.
I would appreciate any insight to this. Thank you for all your hard work this community is awesome.
My opinion is Hero roms are still too slow for the MyTouch. I have one of Cyanogen's roms and love it. Many thanks to Cyanogen and those that assisted. I have flashed about four or five Hero roms and they are realy nice to look at, and I can apreciate all the work it took for someone to get them to even run on the device, but still too slow for me. Just my two cents.
My thoughts
Ya that was my gut feeling, I am going to stick with this as "if ain't broke don't fix it" I may however flash my G1, just to see how it looks
I agree with donepate, most hero roms are pretty sluggish and a lot of roms have trouble with the MT3G. Upon wake up the graphics turn to poo and get pixelated and blurry. But this is only on some MT3g's, and on most roms. The only hero rom that has worked for me is Fatal1ty's hero rom, but It was too slow for me, I was spoiled by Cyanogen's roms speed. If I were you, I would stick with CyanogenMod 4.0.1 and just download a Hero theme. I highly recommend Ted's hero theme. Looks just like the Hero but without its functionality and there's no Sense UI.
Try one
I would suggest trying it and deciding for yourself.
Some people have the absolute opposite experience then what is being mentioned in this thread.
I for instance, am running the TF3D V3 ROM by Drizzy (Not even the newest ROM out there by any means) with a 32MB Swap (as auto partitioned with the RAv1.2.1 Recovery) all on a Class 4 SD. And find the speed no slower by any means.
The only change I have made is to reverse Apps2SD (IMO Apps2SD is not necessary on MT3G)
I am completely satisfied, have no graphical glitches, I do get the TouchUI Loading once when I boot, and maybe once every 2 days if I don't reboot.
The improvements that the Hero ROMS bring to the user experience of the device out ways the quite small
So I say, make a nandroid backup and "Try it out" it just might be "worth it"
I just installed Hero
I used Qteknology HTC HERO PORT from [1.79.482.3] 32b and you are right, the usability is worth the sometimes lag. I have used the overclock app and disabled the old school clock widget and performance is decent. I may try some others but so far so good
Edit: Why this is not released on T-Mobile is beyond me, if they want a truly customizable UI, Hero is that. I upgraded from my G1 which is still working great to a MT3G and to be honest it felt like a windows service pack. I had to bite my pride and tell my wife I love so she could have my G1 and I could not get shot.
My other feeling is that when Hero is released for the non-Google branded phones, these awesome dev's will have much more to work with and speed just may increase. I do not know as all i can dev is a few nasty ass skins
Beautiful!
I just loaded the ROM you suggested and it is night and day. Everting works and more importantly, its fast Thank you for the heads up. I think we have a keeper.
I'm running Hero on my G1 and I love it but I'm waiting till Oct when HTC releases some legit new hero for Magics before I toss it on my MyTouch.
Yeah I tried Haykuro/Dizzy Hero and it gave me BSOD (Blur Screen of Death) but evil hero 1.9 has been running smooth for me with 96mb swap.
I used to hate putting hero roms in my G1 cause of the lag but since then there has been a mass improvement in speed... granted its no Cyanogen but definitely worth taking a look at as it can be used in a daily basis now

I was pretty at the state that you were a couple of hours ago but I have say that this Evil Hero is actually decent even with my class 2 memory card. I am happy at the moment, I like it
My father has the Hero on my recommendation, and it's allright, but the Sense thing is a bit overkill for his use and he just wants a faster phone.
So I'm planning to put a version of vanilla Android on it (1.6 or 2.1, I'll have to try). It is really important though that I can 'unroot' and whatnot in case is has to go back to HTC for warrantee.
Is it true that by flashing the official ROM (the one HTC has got online now) you're done or are there additional steps after that?

Anyway I was asking myself :
Assuming that almost every member/reader of this forum would have tried at least once to install a custom ROM on their Hero, what to expect from the Official 2.1 update ?
Will I be sticking with it ? Will I wait for Villain/Kimera/other ports ? Assuming also that custom Roms will never be 100% stable...
Because from my experience with custom roms (and I've installed A LOT of them on A LOT of devices), it's allways about finding a compromise between speed and stability...
Yep, it's wednesday morning and I really don't wanna get to work...
I think when this 2.1 update comes out (probably won't happen soon, not even friday, as we all know HTC) this only may help custom modders in the stability of their roms, nothing else I'm guessing.
Wouldn't that be the Sprint Hero anyway?

Hmmmm,.... Well I haven't had the experience of swapping and changing ROMs on my Hero,... But having had it for about 2-3 months now, I'm still 100% happy with the speed and stability of the ROM I flashed to it on day 1, ... MCR3.2. I think I'v had 3 or 4 application force closes, and only had it freeze up forcing a re-boot ONCE!!!
I'm sure the custom 2.1's will be just as stable once we get the official ROM to use as a base.

Yes, I would assume so.
I'm not really looking for a more stable 2.1 rom. I just want the speed that is in the 1.5 roms. Since i've heard the 2.1 should be faster the the previous versions I have high hopes fÄr the official release and that the dev can make the most out of it.

I just really hope the battery life will improve.
Current 2.1 ROMs are already quick and stable enough for me, I wish the battery would last longer though. Aside from that, there are only a few minor bugs in most 2.1 ROMs that are currently out there, which do not really bother me.
Its not the 2.1 ROMS that are the problem its all down to the Kernel, which no1 has!surely if it was coming soon then it would have leaked somehow!
if you follow the link from the article it says sprint hero...

Hi, I'll soon be receiving my new G1, cant wait, but wondering what the best way to get Hero on it is. By that I mean, and from a purely objective point of view, which is one of the fastest/stable and fully operational Hero ports available? Alternatively, would it be better to get an older version of Android and theme it like Hero (the launcher). That way in theory it would be a fast stable system that looks like hero. What differences would there be if that was the case (in terms of functionality/features of the operating system etc) between these options?
Many thanks!
Well, I'm assuming you just want Sense as that's what Hero basically is. There are many Sense ROMs for the G1. You'll have to pick which one you like the best. All the reviews in the world can't account for your personal opinion. However, be aware that none have working bluetooth.

thank you! What are the main differences between 1.5 and 2.1 roms?
1.5 was the second version of Android called Cupcake then came Donut 1.6 which is the current version. 2.1 is somewhat new but 2.2 is the most current only available on certain phones such as the Nexus One. 2.1 has certain features not available on 1.6. If you are new to this you should read as much as you can because you can really damage your phone if you take a wrong step.
Once you get rooted next would be to install a custom rom. Donut roms are the most stable but some of these Eclair roms are very close. Check out theunlockr.com for a video tutorial on how to root and install a rom.

Bada's pointing you in a good direction. Just wanted to point out that any "hero theme" you get won't have all the Sense things that most Hero people like. Also, the launcher will just look Hero-ish. It won't have its functionality.

Thats great thanks for your help! I first purchased a G1 which was stuck on the G1 boot screen which i believed I could fix. Id never owned this phone before and so did alot of reading up while waiting for it to arrive to determine the reason it was bricked and a possible solution. As it happens it was a true brick, no access to bootloader, safe mode, recovery or fastboot. I thought i I could force commands to be sent using SDK via Windows but it would never be detected. The one good thing that came out of it, is I have a good knowledge of what to do and what not to do when rooting and upgrading so when my fully functioning one comes I will take all steps to avoid the same fate as the owner of the bricked phone!

Again, thanks for your input! I think my options so far would be to try out a few sense roms, some claim to be quite fast and a few reviews on youtube look promising. Really like the look of it, will have to give them a go to see if i like the feel of them!
Avoid DangerSPL. lbcoder, with the help from a few others I believe, have found way to 100% guarantee you DON'T brick, but you have to follow the instructions. I'm sure no other phone needs this, so I'm just -assuming- you're not fully read up on it. Please, this is the NUMBER ONE way bricks occur and is completely avoidable. You CAN recover a bricked phone through JTAG but it is difficult and offers new ways of completely destroying the phone from ANY future use.
Hi, not long had my DHD but it came with Stock Firmware from Orange so I successfully installed 1.32.405.6 which is all good so far!
I now want to upgrade to gingerbread 2.3 which looks good from what I've seen on youtube! Just want to know if there is an upgrade guide online anywhere? Also will I be able to downgrade to 1.32.405.6 in the future if I don't like it?
I also noticed that a few of the 2.3 roms have a few glitches with certain things not working on the phone. Is there a stable release where everything works properly as it should?
I prefer to wait for HTC to release a 2.3 version. I am sure the usual suspects will do a great job optimizing it.

Hello there,
i just want to know that is it possible to downgrade to froyo if i need to due to some operator related issues?
Looking forward to your kind reply.
Thanks in advance.
There are rumours about Android 2.4. Google is going to do an Android Event on Feb 2nd.
I think they will announce 2.4 officially & I think HTC is busy with updating the HTC Sense to this version of Android.
But who knows, let's hope HTC won't give up with updating our beloved Desire HD
now that would be nice.. Looking forward for it.

Yep. I was able to flash the leedroid froyo rom after just to see if i could. But for restoring froyo backups i think you need to reflash CWM 2.5 (because you will then be using CWM 3.0.0.5 to flash gingerbread).
Is it really needed to take half a year to get a damn update? If we eventually get 2.3 when will we get the next one, after 2 years?
The mobile manufacturers are really doing a bad job with their updates, and we need to put some pressure on them.

Is it really needed to take half a year to get a damn update? If we eventually get 2.3 when will we get the next one, after 2 years?
The mobile manufacturers are really doing a bad job with their updates, and we need to put some pressure on them.

And what do you consider a 'good' job? Diverting all resources to updating the DHD? What about the Desire? Or the Hero? Or all the other phones? Or maybe you think that because you bought a DHD, that's the only phone that must get updates? And what about developing new ones, so the company doesn't fall behind the competition? 2011 will see boom of tablets, dual-core CPUs and whoever knows what. According to your logic HTC should make one phone and dedicate to supporting it for years. It might work for Apple, but that's because no one but them makes IOS devices, so they don't have the same competition, as all Android manufacturers face from each other. HTC are doing the best there is regarding the updates. If you feel that's not good enough, you can always try a community ROM, HTCs devices are the first that get them anyway.

i myself am using mcdv's modified CM7 rom. it's actually pretty damn stable for nightly releases, and so far i have literally zero issues with it. i vowed myself before that i would wait for htc to pack sense with it and then use that but i fell in love with this rom when i tried it on.

Just been to that link and saw this written in one of the posts
Here is a litte guide for using fastboot:
First of all you need the newest Android-SDK. You get this here
After installation (or extracting for Mac/Linux) copy fastboot into the "tools"-folder. You get this here
Your phone needs Engineering HBoot, have a look here
Now download CMW 3.0.0.5 into your tools-folder.
Now reboot your phone into the Bootloader, plug in USB and on your PC switch to Terminal/Command. Change into the tools-folder.
In terminal type:
fastboot-mac flash recovery ace-cwm-3.0.0.5.img
and press enter.
(If your using windows it's just fastboot and on linux it's fastboot-linux.
You can flash a radio by copying a radio.img into the tools-folder and type
fastboot-mac flash radio radio.img

Yeah sure, but why do you really need 2.3 what is really as much better?
They should make better Apps and better Engines for Games first before they make all these versions.
