Content Sprint Hero owners - great netbook for $250 - Hero CDMA General

It's a long story but hopefully worth reading. I was not able to find ANY information about this whole deal so I just went and did it and now I'm posting my results. If you have an HTC hero and are still loving it you'll want to read this!
Here is my writeup.
Actually even if you want to upgrade to the Evo you should still read this because for the same price, you can get the Evo from craigslist for the same price AFTER MiR!
So long I didn't want to re-post it here taking up a whole page worth of posts haha.

Interesting idea... Im in the market for a notebook in January & will check that out. Thanks for the info. Good post.

Pretty freaking sweat! Nice find

No Problem. Just as a follow up: Quick review. I'll post a more in-depth review on my blog tonight.
The laptop with it's shipped-2GB of memory is quite powerful. I've already done some multitasking and the machine had a few hiccups but those are obviously memory related... the processor was fine. Then I tried a few games out on it, mostly the high end flash games and Minecraft - all worked really well although Minecraft had to sacrifice a lot of draw distance. The video card in this Dell is made primarily for video decoding. I played 720P video through the HDMI port on my tv very nicely. Did some HD streaming from Netflix as well. I read that 1080P video works well depending on the format. There is also another video player that works better then VLC for this device... but I cant remember what they said it was. A Little research should bring it up.
Once I slap 8GB of memory into this thing (probably will be here before xmas!) then it will be flying!

Wow, nice man. Great write-up.

Dude I just bought my kids 2 of the exact same netbooks for 200 each yesterday. Seems like a lot of stuff to go through to pay more than what you can buy the.netbooks online for lol.

Guys in response to getting an EVO 4g same price on ebay as you would from sprint:
A tip:
Don't buy phones directly from Sprint - they are ridiculously overpriced.
Check wirefly.com (along with cashback sites) and/or Amazonwireless.com
As of now, Amazonwireless.com doesn't allow upgrades but says its coming soon.
The prices at these retailers are so much lower then Sprint and don't require MIR.
Hope that helps some people save $$.

Radioshack wireless is always a good spot to check too. EVO is $99 new or 2 year upgrade, if eligible, right now.

What do you guys think about the Xoom/tablets

I keep thinking about getting a Xoom or something else Honeycomb when they come out. The one thing I keep hitting on is how and how much I would use it.
As I type this I'm looking at two computers with two monitors each, a 360, and a ps3, then I have a old tube tv in the other room with a Nintendo, Genesis, and a PS2 hooked up to it.
Sometimes I do sit in front of all that and use my "little" 4.3 phone to surf the web, but not a whole lot. When I had my Hero all I wanted was something bigger, the Evo hit that perfectly!
What are you guys thoughts on tablets in general?
Looks sexy

I really want a tablet. Especially the xoom! Looks sweet. The price tag is high but it looks worth it. Itll be a while before i could get anything like that so have to see what comes out after that. It being a official google device makes it better tho.
A year ago, I did not want one..I have changed my mid. I could live with my Evo till the end of my contract if I had an awesome tablet to play with. I spend a LARGE part of my day surfing the web on my phone. After owning the Evo, I could see myself LOVING a tablet. After seeing Honeycomb, I lust.
I have an iPad. I use it to play games and to browse the web when I'm taking a dump. Those two things alone keep me on it for about 2-3 hours daily.
I'll probably get an Android tab eventually but for now the iPad works fine for my purposes.

...which has a very underwhelming CPU/GPU and a still non fully working port? Even with a fully working Honeycomb ROM it's not really worth it.
As for tablets, I don't really need one but I'll probably get a one soon. It's going to be between the iPad 2, Xoom, and maybe even the WebOS tablets.
Actually for me it's the other way around. I used to dream of having a tablet but now that I have an evo, i don't see any point of getting one.
Having a 4.3 and another 7inch device, even 10inch is just overkill.
Besides, once we get dual core phones, there won't be any point to get a tablet beside screen size, which is not that much of a difference.

I agree... Especially since sprint hoooooeeeed us all out of our prime membership upgrades. I'd rather pay for a new tablet than full price for a phone, and just wait for my 2 year upgrade to end.
$500-600 for a new phone when i still have my fully capable evo that runs silky smooth and 99.99% of the apps on the android market
ORRR
$500-700 on a tablet with a much bigger screen and capable of running dungeon defenders....
Thank you sprint for taking away my upgrade because I never would have considered getting a tablet otherwise......................................................................................................assholes
FWIW, I'll give it a week to let users shake it down, and if there's nothing really busted I'll be getting a Xoom.
Tried a few tablets already (Viewsonic G-Tablet, Huawei Ideos, Galaxy Tab) and really want one in a 10" form-factor (so, no Galaxy Tab) with a decent screen and touchscreen (so, no to the other two).

Its horrible this is such a good point! I've been giving Boost some real serious thought and the money I save could be a great excuse to spend the cash on a sweet tablet. The only catch is it seems like all the good tablets are signing on to a carrier.
Xoom is a bit steep for me, so i'm actually gonna wait for the Asus Transformer, which is supposed to fall between 400-700, i'm guessing 16/wifi, 16/3g, 32/wifi and 32/3g with $100 seperating them. The specs for the upcoming devices all look similiar enough that it really falls to build quality and any additional features, and i like the idea of a 10inch netbook form factor where the screen comes off.
I was interested in the Xoom but I want an wifi-only version and I'm not willing to pay as much as a laptop [or more] for a tablet.
Moreover, the Xoom is pretty unattractive considering the likely-hood of a unlockable bootloader.

Honeycomb itself looks amazing, makes me kinda want to get the Xoom. but i think im good with my Evo and laptop. Maybe later when different Honeycomb products come out.
Before I go pay that much money for a tablet ill just go buy another laptop with 10 times better specs. I pretty much feel the same way I did about when the ipads came out.. not much in terms of being useful for me.
For everybody saying laptops better fill the role remember the way the world is moving. I believe the xoom could accomplish most everything a laptop could, especially once developers start making apps for it. The specs of the zoom are amazing as well,.and its portability and "fun of use" will easily best out any laptop... Some books may be up to par.
Im just iffy about the multitasking on honeycomb to be honest.

A tablet will never replace my laptop... not unless it comes with a TB HD, a top notch graphics card, office, sql, access, etc. It's not really even practical for me to use one as a replacement. If I were to ever get a tablet it would be strictly for a casual/fun type thing.

*SIGH* Its decided, Back you go XOOM

I just finished arranging my Xoom in its original packaging and placed it back in its Verizon bag to go back as soon as tomorrow. Unfortunately after some heated internal debating ive decided that the Xoom is not the Tablet for me.
My first experience with Android was with my beloved EVO 4G and ive since become very fond of its in and outs. I hoped i would feel the same way with the Xoom and Android in Tablet form. Unfortunately some glaring ommisions and simply blatant misguided intentions keep me from loving what is an otherwise spectacular piece of hardware.
First off, for a device that claims to be a true Ipad competitor one of the most important areas to address is MEDIA. My mom has an Ipad 3g that i purchased and set up for her and everything runs flawlessly in its limited ecosystem. The Xoom while a much more capable piece of hardware is severely lacking in its implemented media delivery system. How a tablet could even be shipped without a dedicated video player is just beyond absurd to me(im sorry GALLERY is NOT the first place anyone would look to find movies) That wouldnt even be so bad if it weren't for the fact that getting movies on your device is simple enough but watching them is a downright chore. On the Ipad most video formats arent supported, but with one simple app i was able to load any movie i wanted and play it without the hassle of Itunes compatability. Xoom on the other hand has had me spend HOURS converting and researching Video files and codecs and converters just to get a movie to play on my Xoom without the framerate of dialup porn in the 90's. Ive made great progress with this as well, but why should i have to? If i werent me and i were just your average consumer i would be completely lost and frustrated.
So right out the gate weve got a
-4G tablet with NO 4G(pending)
-Expandable Memory(Pending)
-Flash Support(Pending)
-HD Video support(De-Pending on how computer savvy you are)
But ultimately the True Nail in the coffin for me was VERIZON. I chose to go the subsidized route due to the absence of a WiFi only option. I figured i was getting the WiFI version/price plus 3G if i wanted it. But after some hard thinking i realized.... I HATE VERIZON. We have a sordid past involving a cellphone i once had( a MOTOROLA btw, first and only ive ever owned) that wound up leaving me permanently soured on that particular carrier. So the fact that i was so anxious to get a Xoom that i actually got back in bed with these guys took a couple of days to set in. But being that im an avid early adopter i decided i could not be contractually obligated to a first Gen piece of hardware for two years.
I truly believe that the Xoom has potential up the wahzoo. But i cant allow myself to be suckered into playing the waiting game like some lonely side piece waiting for their lover to drop the axe on his marriage. I think there is a place for the Xoom in my life, but only in Wifi form and @ $600 unsubsidized. Once that becomes a reality then i will likely be back for seconds. Until then ill have to swallow my $70 restocking fee but atleast ill be $580 richer and VERIZONless. isnt thats what relly matters in the end?
So... if i read that right.. Your one complaint that you didn't know about before hand was the video player. That's totally understandable.
The rest of it is just plain *****ing, you knew about all of those things BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT and you're just coming here to ***** for no reason.
Sorry I'm just so tired of these posts, everyone knows what the xoom is/isn't capable of, yet they go and pay $800 then ***** about it non stop.
Some people like to buy things, play with them for a week, and then decide to return them based on things they knew when they bought them. Then they come on forums and complain about a device they no longer own.
What kind of responses do you want, do you want us to feel sorry for you?
And let me get this straight....you payed $799 for the Xoom, and now your going to pay a $70 restocking fee. Yet an $600 WiFi only model 2 months down the road sounds good to you? What?
you are one pissed off dude

Actually no one knows that the Xoom isn't capable of playing back what everyone would consider HD media, because they sell it on this point in every commercial without feeling the need to clarify that its only in their VERY specific and unused form of 720p and 1080p that videos actually play. Everyone who asks me about the Xoom is surprised to hear that its dual core processor and eight core GPU is incapable of playing back HD h.264 in high profile, which is what everyone has. And it IS a Tegra 2 issue. I had an owner of a Notion Ink test on video that a high profile video is incapable of being played on the Notion Ink, so the claim made by multiple people here that its a lack of codecs for the Xoom seems to be false. The video is posted in the general section.
As for the other issues, yea the OP pretty much spent money on something knowing its shortcomings and is complaining about his bad decision. And how do you sign a 2 year contract with a company that you hate???

That's what I meant when I said there was one issue he didn't know about.
That's what I love about android it doesn't hold your hand and wipe your ass so to speak. Its and operating system that is full customizable. Hell you couldn't even change the wallpaper on an iPhone for years.....
The lack of video player makes sense but the fact that you can download any player out want makes up for it. Rockplayer lite can play pretty much any video you can throw at it.
SKReeettttt... hold [email protected]!!
I was merely pointing out the main points to why im choosing to return my XOOM but i just figured my post was long enough without tunring this into a miniseries. I dont expect any sympathy. I totally admit that i made a choice and in the end decided that it wasnt the right choice for me, thats all. Im allowed to change my mind arent i?. No i didnt pay 799. I payed 599(subsidized) which meant ill be on contract with Verizon for 2 years until the Ipad 4 comes out (not cool).
I did all of my homework before making this purchase. But even given that info without any solid confirmations from a number of companies until literally the 11th hour alot of it was guesswork. So i became my own guinea pig and if all it costs me is 70 bucks i think i got off easy.

I sympathize with your frustration. Despite all the sugar coating and the feel good positive self help encouragement on this board, the reality is, that there really isn't an excuse for a device to have these shortcomings. If its not ready to be released don't release it.
I am amazed at how much crap people will put up with. $800 + tax to spend hours encoding videos -SERIOUSLY!!
Seems like every other post is some form of be patient and their will be unicorns and roses and sunshine just around the corner.
I am willing to bet you guys are all 100% right about all the fixes. Last I checked the turn-around time for new tech these days is about the time it takes to blink.
By the time the fixes are available, they will likely all be distributed in one, complete, non downloadable format called the XOOM 2.
Some of you are very defensive!
The OP knew the device had some shortcomings but wanted to give it a shot anyway. He did, and found more things he had an issue with. He doesn't want a 2year contract with VZW and decided to give us an account of why he is returning it. Get off his back.
does best buy charge a restocking fee for the xoom? if they don't i may be right behind the op in the next few days.
the having to re-encode video is killing it for me. i bought this as a media consumption device, a large part of that being videos, maybe using it with my hdtv too.
if i have to spend hours converting video, thats just a waste of time, id be better served using my samsung epic phone.
thats just sad, my freaking cell phone plays video better than the xoom.
seeing hte xoom and adam comparison video was disheartening. i have read that the tegra 2 was demoed by nvidia playing h264 1080p high profile video at 10mbit and its supposed to be able to do 720p high profile at 20mbit.
both the xoom and adam seem to be incapable of this currently, that being said, it is still POSSIBLE that this can be solved with software/codecs.
the problem is when and what if? if it does happen, when will it be? but what if it doesn't happen?
as i watch the days tick away till my deadline where the xoom is no longer returnable, im getting more and more concerned because i don't want to be stuck with an $800 device that only does half of what it advertised.
/rant
sorry a bout that, just wanted to get it off my chest too. i just don't know what to do. i see the potential in the device, but i also understand the fact that the potential may never be realized.
everyone is pissed off
Yawn.
iPad and likely iPad 2 cannot even do real multitasking and these are the things we find to complain about.
It's ok to have buyers remorse for the price, but anyone in the Android world knows that the beauty of the ecosystem is something and somebody will almost certainly come along and fix whatever problem you have.
It's a simple trade off between flexibility and the Apple dictatorship, if you want to be locked into what a system can do, be sure to buy an iPad, where if you have a problem, you are almost certainly stuck with it forever.
It an easy choice for me, I do not stress out waiting for improvements, I enjoy the continuously improvements over the lifetime of the hardware. I cannot even image being locked into the Apples 'my way or the highway' environment.
And in 5 years when Android is 70% of the market and Apple is relegated to it's sub 30% share, where it is most comfortable, there is a reason.
And last but not least, no device is perfect, and to expect that invites disappointment every time.
Not that he said he was going to iPad, but others in the thread seemed to suggest that is there solution.

Why do you assume that everyone who returns a XOOM wil immediately run out and buy an iPad. Many may just chose to wait and see what Samsung and LG and others will produce.
I have a Galaxy Tab and I chose to wait at this point. I'm not running out and buying an Apple device. This battle isn't all Apples and Oranges - or Androids and Apples......
My Nexus 1 couldn't record 720 video and FM didn't work until enterprising hackers figured out how to enable it. If I was waiting on official channels, it still wouldn't work. Just because Moto can't figure it out doesn't mean it won't eventually be done.

Agreeded. My wife and I each have a Xoom and we love it. Sure it has some short comings, but so does every device. In the end, the biggest selling point for me for the Xoom was the unlocked bootloader and the Google experience device. The software on this thing is going to be hacked and chopped up to no end. That is what most people are missing. Who cares that it wasn't 100% ready at launch...seriously. I am much happier having one to play with now rather then waiting another month or 2 or 3. Any of you saying otherwise is lying to yourself because of self inflicted buyers remorse.

I absolutely agree with you. Which is the reason my Xoom is also heading back to Best Buy. Its just not ready for prime time. Now i consider myself an early adopter and i have no problems doing so but this device is just way, way too young. Ill wait for it to mature again and purchase it later. In the mean time ill let my $800+ dollars sit in a high interest account ;-)
No one cares that you don't like it. Good bye have fun, hope you find what you are looking for elsewhere

[Q] Thinking about Switching -

I've been back and forth from switching from the Inspire over to the Atrix...Just curious if anyone in here has done that, and What (if any versus the Inspire) are the Pro's/Con's to Swapping devices....
I believe i'm still covered under AT&T's 30 day exchange deal, so lets hear it...What do you all think?
If the inspire had a BETTER, speaker phone, battery, I would have stayed with it.
The ringtones and music play so LOW it's pathetic! And battery life is not as good as the atrix, UNLESS you don't use the phone much. I don't care much about the hacks that suppose to fix somethings, it will never be as good as the atrix in those areas. Because of this I was inspired to go for the atrix
The atrix on the othe hand, has weak camera and its flash is weak too. I like that it's much smaller than the inspire.
The fellow I had the pleasure of speaking with at AT&T was pretty quick to tell me that I would be paying quite a lot for more for the Atrix than this Inspire...It sounds good, but is it truly worth swapping?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
...... how exactly did he come to that conclusion?
Good question....my guess was partially because I bought this and my wifes crackberry Torch for $79 bucks each through their lovely retention department...I figure I will call them in the morning
Sent from my Inspire using XDA App
I just exchanged my Inspire for an Atrix and it cost me $103... Not exactly a bank breaker.
If I Swap to the Atrix, I Seriously refuse to pay anything more...DOUBT I'll get away with it, but you'd figure a Like for Like exchange of some sorts...supposed to call my friends over @ Retention again this morning, so we'll see...

My take is that the Inspire has a better display (not resolution but brightness and colors) but the Atrix has more to offer in the long run.
I also figured out how to get great battery life with the Atrix. Your mileage may vary, but I use Exchange via Hotmail for my sync needs and changing it from push to 15 min intervals has extended my battery life to more than a day. With the Inspire, I was never able to make it through an entire day without charging.
The Atrix also has a great speaker and plays Angry Birds with zero lag.

you are aseking about cons and pro's nothing else.there is a lot of them....

Despite its MANY shortcomings, the Atrix still is the best phone to have today. Maybe the EVO 3D or SGS2 might steal this title, but it still stands strong.
A solid contender today is the Nexus S.
Frankly, my advice would be to get the Atrix, hold on to it till the end of the year, and get the next multi-core Nexus phone. It might also have a 3D screen (to encourage development of 3D apps), who knows?
But I gotta say, I found the lack of 720p HD recording on the Nexus S to be unforgivable. On the other hand, the Atrix can't play unmodified 720p mkv movie files, while the Nexus S can....

God I hope not... I owned a 3DS for a grand total of 24 hours because some unfortunate people like myself can't look at a binary 3D screen without nearly painting the floor with what we had for our last meal... I'm ready for 3D to die... JUST DIE!!! Get out of my video games, off of my phone, and back into James Cameron's garage!

i see a new inspire vs atrix thread everyday on this board, you are just asking pros and cons and there are many threads already on the subject addressing the exact same question you are asking....honestly can people not make decisions for themselves anymore, just look at the specs and reviews and choose the one best for your needs. its not complicated....
Atrix is beyond the Inspire. Can't believe people think the Inspire is better. I think Moto should have waited to optimize its device for dual-core and launch it with GB...but whatever, it is still the best on the market right now. Atrix sits #1 on the charts according to pcworld

Meh. Some people like to ask questions to the community instead of reading different threads. At least it's semi-on topic. Guess that shows how cynical I've become after 16 years of posting on internet forums.

Reasons for a Tablet

For a long time I didn't see a reason for me to purchase a tablet. The only use I can think of right now is for me to have more access to my files on a bigger screen via dropbox.
That said, I still reaaaaally want a Xoom, but it's not a good enough reason for me to drop $800+ (Xoom+accessories) since my phone can do the same thing, except on a smaller screen.
Yes, there is the multimedia portion; videos and whatnot but again, what else are tablets used for? I'm not an artist either so the drawing/sketching capabilities do not apply to me.
So hence my question, what do you guys use your tablets for?
Also, do phone applications work on tablets or do tablets have their own set of applications? How is the resolution of the apps if tablets can use the same apps that phones use?
Cheers!
I like this thing, but it's definitely a toy. If I hadn't gotten a great deal on it, I would have been disappointed. Functionality is not what I'd hoped, and browsing the internet is painful at best. I wouldn't dream of using it for serious work. In a few years these will be "useful," but for now it's still just a toy.
It seems like you have your mind made up. I use mines for:
Browsing
YouTube
Gaming
Emulators
Remote Desktop
Texting
Video Editing
Reference
School
Emailing
And a whole bunch of other things. I traded my iPad 2 for it and don't regret it one bit. More appps are coming to Android and are tablet friendly. You can run phone apps also. I haven't even rooted mines yet and if I did the list would be even bigger.

I will admit that text input is hella laggy when typing on forums. I don't know why.

I use mine for several things, but the major thing for which my phone would be completely inadequate is that I teach Bible class on Sunday mornings from my tablet. My tablet is wifi only so I cannot speak for those who can haul theirs with them all the time and get 3g on it.
Generally speaking, Android phone apps will work on an Android tablet. Some apps need to be updated for newer versions of Android, especially Honeycomb, and will force close. Some phone apps will not expand to fill the screen but will only take up a small portion of it. Some apps will fill the screen automatically and the resolution looks fine. Some apps will fill the screen but they look odd. It is a trial and error "test it and see" matter. There are also apps that have be designed or redesigned just for tablets. Most tablet apps will say "for Honeycomb" or "HD" (High Definition) or "for tablets" in their names, but this is not always the case. The Market does have a special section of featured tablet apps and you can find many more by searching on "Honeycomb" or "Tablet."
If you don't want to pay for a Xoom, look into the Iconia A500 like I did. It's very similar, but only costs $450

I actually think browsing the net is the best thing it does. Quick controls and thumb keyboard make it very fast. Use something like pulse and it's a media consumers dream.
I got my 3G Verizon Xoom on eBay for $490 shipped... I wouldn't pay regular price either.
At the end of the day... it IS just a toy, but it is definitely closer to a laptop than the iPad 2 is, I goto the iPad 2 for my wife & she loves it.
Xoom is much more versatile than the iPad 2.
At the end of the day it still seems like it's just an expensive toy as of now...
But I may pick one up tomorrow just to play with it to see if I like it just because I'm kind of a gadget whore. Hahaha
Question, does LauncherPro(Plus) work on tablets or no? Or is there a tablet version of it? I saw some "hands-on" videos on youtube and there seems to be a bit of lag when transitioning between homescreens. Hmmm!
Well I have a post about this. It is not exhaustive but it covers a lot with photos and elaborations.
I am not a random id that do some own ads here but if xda allows html, I will post my original write-up here without hestitation. =)
Here it is
What do you do with your 10.1 tablet toy??
There is no reason for a tablet. Just buy a laptop. Its half the price and its a better value. I would never drop 800 on a tablet.

Well, you just went beyond what I said when I called it a "toy." Its silly to make statements like this when 1) laptops are not "half the price"; 2) nobody cares how much YOU want to spend on your electronics; and 3) not everyone makes the same uses of their stuff as you do. If you like laptops, that's great. I do too. Tablets are a different form factor and thus have different uses.
Anyways, make your own decisions about what you want to spend your money on, just don't expect it to be anything more than it is.

Agreed, my laptop costed me 3 grand, so I disagree with the comment above yours.
Point of this post was to see if there's any other usages for the tablets that I had not known about. Which does not seem to be the case. I was hoping to have more reasons to justify my purchase (to make myself feel less guilty y'know? )
That said, I may buy it and play around with it to see if I like it and/or will be needing it.
Anyone know if its possible to haggle the price at BestBuy or FutureShop in Canada ?

I admit there really is no reason for a tablet. I've wanted a Xoom since release but wasn't comfortable with paying $800 or signing a contract, so the wifi version came out and I jumped on it.
Now that I have the Xoom, I still don't really know what to do with it. I'm reading books on it, thats cool...it's cool for browsing and what not. I can't justify it's reason for existence other than it's cool.
To summarize;
Paid $600 for Xoom Wifi
Can't figure out what I needed it for
Happy as I hell that I have it
It's gadget porn, thats all.

Ha! Haggling a price at a big-box store? Are you from Europe!
Just kidding, but the answer is a flat "no chance." Nobody at those stores have the authority to change pricing.
A word of advice to you: I'd wait for the second generation devices. The Xoom is a solid early-adopter device, but now that you've managed to avoid it for this long I'd put it off for a few more months while the second-gen devices come out. Cheaper, lighter, and (hopefully) will be supported for longer by google/manufacturer. Then again, if you spent $3k on a laptop (I hope it has a money printer and a grappling hook for that price!) then I'm guessing that you're not too worried about the few hundred dollars it would cost to trade up when you want to.

Tablets are a lot easier to carry around. It's easier to hold while standing up, laying in bed, and kicking back on a couch/recliner/lawn chair. I'm tired of being hunched over a keyboard and mouse. I can rest my head and browse. If I need to do something that my Xoom can't. I can RDP into my PC, or walk to my PC and do what I need to do. Also battery life on my Xoom is just awesome.
I feel tablets are like the consoles vs PC war. Sure PC is superior to consoles in many ways, but in my opinion, it can't beat picking up the controller and relaxing on the recliner playing a game. Same sense, I can just pick my tablet up and browse.
I have no laptop nor netbook. So I bought the Xoom.
Yes it is a toy, but using it while lazing on the bed/couch is so comfortable.
Web browsing comes first to mind. Though it won't be as full featured as using the desktop but normal web surfing works very well and using your fingers instead of a mouse to navigate websites makes so much sense.
Next would be ebook reading. Seriously, if you read your books and you have no ebook reader then using your tablet as a book is a must. It has pretty much replaced my normal paperback reading. And best thing is it's pretty easy to just sideload tons of free ebooks into the Xoom for your viewing pleasure anytime.
And finally gaming. Just to pass the time. I pretty much stopped gaming on my nexus one because well, playing games on a 10.1" screen is just so much better.
Just buy the xoom at a Costco/sams club for you can return it after two months.
I plan on doing that so if new generation devices come out then I will just swap it out.
Right now i dont see the need for a tablet, although im envious of the people that do have them. But i just dont see the need for it at the moment, i just recently got a brand spankin new huge 25" all-in-one pc for less then that of the Xoom. As of now the Xoom isn't for me but i have my sights set on the Galaxy 10.1

Considering getting one, would like opinions...

So I am on tmobile with my SGS Vibrant and the sensation isn't getting me excited and the thought of waiting until near winter is killing me, and then I stopped and wondered why I didn't just get a tablet in the mean time?
The only thing my vibrant doesn't do that i wish it did was play dungeon defenders, and with 1gig ram and a tegra2 the transformer should play it easy. Plus I just want a tablet and being pretty darn cheap among it's competition without seeming to sacrifice much I just need the slightest push into trying to track one down.
Any downsides to getting a tablet and not upgrading my phone? Any downsides to getting the tranformer instead of waiting a month or paying a little more for something else?
Also I just read the pcmag review and was getting kind of annoyed. They kept saying it wasn't quite an iPad2 and complained about how the keyboard they got was buggy (iPad2 doesn't have that option, hell no one does), and that flash 10.2 is still in beta, but isn't apple pretty far behind in flash on their "mobile" devices?
Sorry, that almost became a rant. So opinions? Any one else who was like me (on the wall about getting a tablet) who took the plunge and now very happy/unhappy about it? I suppose I could order it on Amazon and would have time to return it, but I would like to know what I should be checking for at least so I can see if it bothers me or not.
Thanks for any and all help. I will now go look at the dev section and see if that gets me more excited or not.
I vote go for it! You wont be dissapointed. There are a lot of fun things to do with the tablet vs just a phone. Let your imagination run with this thing.
I was going to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But after finding out that it didnt have a microSD card slot that was a deal breaker. I then began to look at other Tablets. Then I found it. It had all the features I wanted and was cheaper than others. It also had an option for a keyboard that almost doubles the battery life. The decision was easy. I got my Transformer yesterday and I am super happy with my decision. Def go for it. Newegg had them in stock last friday at $499 free ship and no tax. I added a class 10 32 gig microSD. Came to like $570. Also tiger direct had the keyboards in stock as of monday. Have fun with your Transformer. Im very happy with mine.
Wow. When I posted this Amazon had stock of the 16gb model (which would be plenty for me), now they don't. Newegg does but there are no returns for refund (just in case).
I guess I will hold off for now since I am moving at the end of the month any way and shouldn't be splurging right now.
I ALMOST bought one earlier but so many people reported a lot of annoyances that I don't think I would get one without the assurance that I can send it back if I need to.
There's going to be annoyances with any device one gets, really. Especially with a first generation device like the TF. I really do suspect that some of the "problems" voiced are those of perception but, on the other hand, there are some bonafide issues that require addressing.
I've been fortunate, mine has been great. Rooted, Prime 1.4 and OC to 1.4. It performs quite well.
Shiznit... Amazon got more in stock, so I put one on my credit card... At least with amazon if I get it and feel stupid for having done so I get 30 days to return it... I think.
Otherwise I will be telling everyone how cool tablets are by wednesday and playing too much dungeon defenders.
However I already know to check for dust and screen bleed. Anything else to be cautious about? I probably won't pull out the magnifier glass or anything but I being a poor college student I don't want to regret my purchase (I will get the dock when school starts more than likely).
sound balance.
Flash is at 10.3 and Apple refuses to even consider it at the moment. The Android 3.1 update came with an update for the keyboard which it prompted me to install when I first connect to mine. No problems. Nothing close to a force close has appeared since I've had mine. Appreciate the product well enough I took some high resolution photos and did a blog post about it.

Does this mean like speaker placement, or speakers not being equal volume, or like imbalance in tones/pitch?
I've seen this a few times and am not quite sure what to not hope for. I guess I will have to pay attention to if the sound in general bothers me, but thanks.
And @4D, thanks, I will check that out. I hate how everyone bumps tech site reviews and makes it some what of a pain to find decent personal reviews (because, you know, I am not a tech site, I am just a person who wants to know what the device will feel like and not compare it to the ipad2)
see my thread "Still the new hotness".. I'm in lurve baby!!
I've had my TF for two weeks now. I have the 32gb with the dock. Bought it overseas in Australia (ended up being cheaper there than the US)! Apart from the fact that our company has complicated templates for MS Word and Excel, the machine is perfect. I've been able to VNC back into my full sized laptop several times, and it's really going to be a desktop replacement for me on the road.
I had an Asus EeePC prior, and loved that, and this is no different. My one annoyance is the right hand shift key, and that there is no keyboard shortcut for recent apps. However, the shift key is just a getting used to thing. As for the recent apps thing, if that's the only other issue, I'm doing pretty well!!!
Don't use up your upgrade right now on a phone. Wait till Christmas time when the nexus 3 will be upon us.

Not on contract at the moment, so I don't get upgrades. Maybe early next year I will go back on contract simple for a new phone (since the prices are getting pretty high on their own)
