Blown Speaker / Crackling Noises - Epic 4G General

Coincidences? Switching from a Beta Froyo DI18 to DK28 all of a sudden my speaker is making a crackling sound. It sounds like it is blown, or the connection is bad. I am guessing it is just a coincidences that it happened at the same time I did the update, since I am not seeing other post with the same issue. It is weird because I was not playing music, using the speaker phone or anything else through the speaker at all yesterday.
Hopefully I can take it to a Sprint Store and they can swap the speaker out. I really don't want a new phone as this one has ghost armor and it is on perfectly!

I too have upgraded and started having speaker problems. Mine now sounds exactly as you have described it. The speaker was never great before when compared to other headsets but now it is really bad. So, did the speaker just happen to break at the same time that I changed firmware or did DK28 do something to it?

I'm with ya! It seems that it might be software related to DK28? I notice when listening to music and some multi tasking maybe taxes the processor a bit and then I get the crackling....
Hmmmmm

I have to say
On 2.1, my speaker was great.
Now on 2.2, it siyndd like rice crispies.

I had the same issue, and my speaker shut down completely. Took it into best buy since I had the service plan, and when I got it back, they said they had only "changed settings", but it's working again...
Also, I unrooted back to stock before giving the phone over to best buy, but it still wasn't working until I got it back from geek squad.
Downside; now my keyboard doesn't light up, and doesn't interact with orientation, but allows input via typing.

No static or crackly problem with Eclair or when I flashed to DK28. Did you try a factory reset after flashing to DK28? It cleared up a few odd problems I encountered. YMMV

I'm on DK28 and loving my speakers. Runs as should.

Took it to the Sprint store and after replacing my speaker it is fine. Sprint said nothing about the leaked Froyo or custom rom on the phone.
On a side note, they also replaced my screen. I have no idea why they did that as the speaker is clearly not connected to the screen. I am really pissed about it too because I lost my ghost armor off the top half of my phone and had to pay Best Buy another $25.00 to have a new kit reapplied.
Oh well at least my speaker is working again.

I had the same problem with mine. They ended up replacing the phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9656954

since the epic's come out we've had about 5 people come in w/blown speakers. depending on the store you go and the level of experience the tech working on your phone has will determine if they just replace the whole phone or speaker, but repair centers should have speakers in stock to replace if their doin their job right.

Happened to me also. I got a whole new phone as well.

Earpiece is cracking

I have had the evo since the day it came out. Just recently my earpeice speaker has a crackling in it. Will sprint give me any problems cause I am rooted? will I have to load the stock ruu on the phone before I bring it in. I would hate to have to start all over again. But it is hard for me to talk on the phone. If someone knows if they would just replace the speaker or if they would give me a new phone?
just do a back up and then go stock and bring it in.
if they see it is rooted they will blame that as the issue.
I thought if I go back to stock I will loose all my nand backups
No just nand backup, stock it, get it back, root it, run band, your good to go. Backup your nand folder on a computer if it makes you feel safer too.

run band?
Hopefully I will get the same phone back and not a new one.
Yea band, as in bandroid nackup.
blow into the ear piece. mine was cracking two and i think something passed through that little grate and got up against the ear piece. kinda like putting something on a car speaker and it popping and cracking like its blown..
should a least try it
so no follow up?
I get popping/crackling in my on-phone speaker every other call it seems. If I hang up and call again it sometimes will go away. I'm rooted stock.
I figured it was the network and not the phone. Let us know how it goes...
Well I returned my phone back to stock without any root, I also took off any folders/files on the sd card that would show that I had root. I went to the sprint store, they looked at my phone and after 30min they said, "ok, we are going to get you a new/refuribished phone" and I had the choice of getting white, which I am getting. Should have it by Tues or Wed. Then I will be rooting it. I can't stand having my phone stock. I miss my cm6 turbo
I'm curious about this as well. My speaker crackles but only ever with one person that I call. As crazy as it sounds it's only when I call my gf on her Hero.
I know it's not a volume issue because I hear the crackling while the phone is ringing before she even picks up. I was also wondering if it's a network issue cause it never happens on any of my other calls.
I have TEP so I may just see what Sprint says.
Edit: I forgot to add that when I'm talking to her and switch to speakerphone I can still hear crackling so I'm thinking network issue.

I have that a little bit too. Mine seems to be volume though. If I'm maxed on in-call, that's the worst. If I pop it down one click it's not too bad.
I can deal with it, but I have a feeling it may get worse some day

Epic 4G Speaker Innards

Well, The speaker began making crackly death sounds in my epic. From what I've seen via google search and here on the forums, It isn't entirely uncommon.
I've tinkered with some electronics before so i decided to avoid the whole going back to stock thing and picked up a speaker on ebay and replaced it. Along the way i decided to pick apart the failed bit. Took a few pictures but I am unsure of the cause of problems since i damaged the speaker prying the metal cover off. But I figure that one of the corners of the cone is getting popped inward and not letting the speaker do its thing.
If anyone else happens to have a failed/ noisy speaker and cares to take it apart please take a picture or two. I am simply curious as to if the corners are just creasing themselves inward somehow.

I would have of just gone to sprint. But it seemed easier to me to just get the speaker off of ebay for 13 bucks and have an excuse to pop open the back cover. And I am le lazy when it came to going back to stock. Strange there are no void stickers of any sort on the thing though.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem... Samsung tried to blame the issue on Sprint haha!
But, no I don't feel comfortable taking the speaker out and replacing it... =/ good luck if you can figure it out though!

If I can find a speaker on Ebay, I will certainly give it a shot. This distortion is really bugging me. If I turn it up, it sounds like crap. If I turn it down, I get no ringtone, so I miss calls.
I got the same issue. I thought it was related to eb13.

glad to see im not the only one with this issue. my speaker sound like ass! unfortunately im not hardware savy enough to gut my epic but im gonna try and get my buddy at the repair center to see if he can fix it for me at his place instead of having to flash to stock to get it fixed then reflashing everything.
I always assumed it was an improper grounding issue, not the speaker itself. Different firmwares and ROMS have produced different results, so I have my doubts about the speaker being the issue.
Ya, mine is "blown" too... but it happened one day while I was at work... on silent. I was also kinda thinking it has more to do with software than hardware... but it hasn't fixed itself yet and it's been almost 2 weeks.
Looks like I might be doing the Odin thing soon, thank goodness for TEP.
Well, mine started to sound blown too. It happened overnight, I wasnt even using the speaker. Im farked too because I dont have insurance on this thing. Is this a software issue or what?

Just for the record, if your wire wont attach again, its because the technicians have a special tool to pop in on and off.
If your speaker isn't working, take it into a repair center. If they can fix it in store and it's under warranty, it will cost you $35. If you have insurance, then it should be no cost. The store I went to was cool about custom roms and rooting, was even asking me about it.The store I went to was not a corporate store as there are no corporate stores in the area that do repairs.
Forgot to mention that if they can't fix it in store, they will send to Samsung and Samsung will send a refurbished model. So in that sense, it may be a good idea to Odin.

I was hoping it would be a software issue but no amount of flashing back to stock would fix it. It started when my alarm went off one morning. Started out fine then turned to crackly death sounds all at once.
So far so good on the replacement speaker however.

yup, exactly how mine malfunctioned. I set the alarm, worked when i set it, then woke up to a gawd awfull crackly noise, and the speaker was blown.
Since i don't have TEP, should i just try and buy it and replace it myself or go back to stock and have the techs look at it at my sprint store?
I am experincing the "blowing" or "bursting" speakers, too, all of a sudden. I am on Bonsai 4.0.1, but I experienced that on stock ROM, too. I wish we can find a solid solution to this intriguing issue.

It might not actually be blown!
Long time reader, first time poster.
Ok, here is what I discovered about the Epic speaker. Like everyone else here I had my speaker die the same way, suddenly was distorted at any normal volume and no sound when you turned the volume to low, after awhile it just up and quit.
One thing i did discover was the if I tapped the speaker module it would start working again but blown sounding, so I thought "hmmm, seems like a loose connection". Got bored the other night and decided to take the speaker module out and see if I could spot a loose connector. No, no such luck, so after tearing the speaker module apart and playing with it, I narrowed it down to a bad solder joint in the ?diode? array under the red goo. when i would flex the cable it the speaker would suddenly start working again normally (no distortion, nice loud volume).
Now, as near as I can tell, Samsung is only using 2 leads of the connector hence the diode array (best guess due to the wiring pattern), voltage one way and the speaker plays, voltage the other way and the vibration motor runs. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Unfortunately, I cannot say if this is a permanent fix or not, my diodes appear to have taken some damage due to me continuing playing around with the speaker module while it was on (Either cumulative from running it messed up, or maybe I shorted them while I was poking around; but the speaker volume decreased gradually over time, no distortion though). But I do know for awhile everything was working fine, and my speaker worked like it was supposed to.
If any of you have the same problem, and can manage small surface mount work, this might be a way to save a few $$ or get it working again in short order since the only replacement speakers in can find right now appear to be coming out of Hong Kong with a long delivery time.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks for all the help that you guys have given me over the years.
As in everything in life, YMMV.
Hmm, I did not think to check out the wires while i had it out. I no longer have the broken part so if i encounter the issue again i know where to start looking.
Thanks!
I had the same problem. Thankfully i have best buy black tie insurance.

Loss of sound due to lint

Today I plugged my epic into the car jack to listen to music on my way home. When I unplugged everything seemed fine, but the first call I got had no sound. I called my wifes phone to test and same thing, and she couldn't hear me either. I also noticed I lost all screen tap sounds, but my ringtones still made noise. So I tried to reflash the ROM I was on and it didn't help. So I odin'd to DI18, and it didn't work. So I went to sprint, bone stock and let them try to fix it, only to watch them fail as well. So I walked out of Sprint wth a new Epic on order, ad noticed that the sound screen taps would work and then just stop again. I got home and looked in the 3.5 mm hole and found smashed down lint was stuck inside. I used a small needle to remove the lint and what do you know, I am an idiot. Hope this helps someone out there.
Sent from anxiously awaiting new Epic.

I was suprised sprint didnt catch it while I was there. The assumed it was a software issue related to bad EC05 update. Whatever, I got a couple of dings on this one, i'll take a clean for free.

Luckily the epic hardware is a lot less flaky than the pre. The first replacement pre developed a crack in the side panel after about 3 days of light use. Make sure to give your replacement a good look over before you leave the store, if you catch any problems there you will likely be able to get a new in box phone.

[Q] Earpiece/Speakerphone Crackling/Distorting

Just wondering if anyone has experienced their Atrix crackling or distorting when making calls using the earpiece or speakerphone. I searched around and it seems a limited number of people are experiencing this when their volume is set to over 50% or near the max. I am experiencing this even when my volume is set to under 50%.
I am referring to the earpiece/speakerphone and not the actual speaker in the back.
Yes. I have the same problem. Nothing has fixed it so far. Sometimes I can't hear anyone, cause it gets so loud. Let me know how you resolve this!

Same issue for me, but it's minor.
Are you guys all on the stock 0.37 Bell firmware? I am currently playing around with the Noise Suppression settings but they don't seem to be helping much. I am considering flashing to the French SBF to see if it improves things.
I do have this problem. It sounds like the speaker has something loose in it and its rattling but I suspect the speaker is blown. My rear speaker is on its way to hell too. Coming from iPhone 4, i'm really disappointed with Motorola build quality.
Im on at&t. The problem is obviously hardware related. It was on firmware 1.2.6. 1.5.7 and now 1.8.3. Themed no themed, odexed, deodexed, doesn't matter. Old radio, new radio..... Seems to be related to signal quality somehow. Shall we make it a warranty issue? It happens on every call for me.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
The first Atrix I had, had that problem. Went back to the store, pulled another out of the box to compare and the problem was obviously hardware related. Had the phone replaced.
Isn't this a common problem across the board with Motorola phones?
My work mate has another Motorola android phone and she had hers replaced three times due to ear piece problems!
Mine does it. Especially noticeable after dialing when waiting for the other party to pick up while it's rinigng. It's really bad at anything over 50% volume.
Definitely HW related.
Mine does it for the first ring when I call out. Then it sounds normal.

I'm thinking I'll hang tight with it for a while. The speaker seems to work fine during calls and everything but the first ring. I had issues on my Nokia E71 where the first ring would be really quiet and then after that the volume would go up to normal. If it gets worse, I'll exchange it then.
I've got the crackling issue as well. Happens at any time during a call but is especially noticeable during the initial dialing
Same issue for me too. However, it's not the speaker because I get the same noise with my headphones as well. Typically I only hear it on the first ring.

[Q]Intermittent mic issue

Anyone else experiencing this issue? I'll be on the phone chit chattin away with no issues, then usually anywhere between 30 seconds to 5 minutes my phones mic will cut out, I can hear them fine on my end but they cannot hear me at all. If I end the call then call them back they can once again hear me. This was happening before any mods. Figuring that it could be a ROM issue I Odin back to stock but MDC since I had upgraded to MDL then did some tinkering to touchwiz, shabbys kernel and some theming and I still get the problem. I am assuming at this point its a hardware issue but I wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem at all.
Thanks
Edit: forgot some info. I have a sprint s4 full bars in location, happens just about anywhere, WiFi disabled, 3g area only here in phx
Happening on my wife's stock gs4 but not my stock rooted gs4. She is also having some heat issues. Screen/battery getting hotter than normal since day one.
Going to store tomorrow. Fun fun...

Yeah I'm going to restore mine right now and take it in. Its makes me a little mad knowing this is already happening and I haven't even had it a week. All will be well if they fix it.
I've returned two phones because of this issue, now I'm thinking it's just a hardware bug.
Don't use voice enough to switch to a different one, although it's very annoying.
Yeah I was going to return it but I have been testing the theory that i have been covering the mic hole. If you cover it at all so one will hear you. So far I haven't really had a problem but I don't talk on the phone that much
I've experienced the same thing
I just got my S4 on Sunday, and today it did the exact same thing. Not sure if its just typical Sprint problems, or actually an issue with the phone. Have you experienced more issues?
For me it happened twice in one call, once for like 10 seconds, then again and the other caller just hung up because they couldn't hear me.
Trying to decide if this is a QC issue, or just a one off problem.
I really haven't had any further issues. I know that some of my cause was them repairing a tower. Its only happening when I over the mic hole from what I am seeing. I guess time will only tell if it is a true hardware issue
