Edited : I finally solved my problem, thanks to nutunited. The solution is explained on the first three pages. It implies doing a lot of stuff about goldcard, downgrading, etc. but it works !)
While people on the other thread are trying to change their CID or to remove the CID-checking of Froyo update, I started this thread to regroup people that are in the same situation than me.
This is, people that have an unbranded HTC Legend, not rooted (this is: without any kind of modifications) and Froyo update still fails.
I've update1 for 2.1, and when I try updating to 2.2, I've the red warning. When I press power + volume up, I can see that there's an assert that failed when checking system files (in my case, this is often /system/app/SetupWizard.apk, calendar.odex and Facebook.apk).
I don't know if it's relevant, but the name of the update is :
OTA_Legend_Froyo_S_HTC_WWE_3.15.405.3-2.05.405.2_release_160357lpbd4myxuoe8m8jr.zip
(Also available on http://fotadl.htc.com/OTA_Legend_Froyo_S_HTC_WWE_3.15.405.3-2.05.405.2_release_160357lpbd4myxuoe8m8jr.zip)
Software informations :
Version : 2.1-update1
Radio : 47.39.35.09U_7.08.35.21
Kernel : 2.6.29-5F084974 [email protected] #1
Build : 2.05.405.2 CL191838 release-keys
Software : 2.05.405.2
Browser : WebKit 3.1
And my CID is HTC__E11.
It seems that every CID from the following list should be accepted by the update :
0000000
1111111
2222222
3333333
4444444
5555555
6666666
7777777
8888888
9999999
HTC__001
HTC__K18
HTC__E11
HTC__N34
HTC__203
HTC__102
HTC__405
HTC__Y13
HTC__A07
HTC__304
HTC__016
HTC__032
What I tried :
- Doing OTA update normally (failed) ;
- Copying the update as update.zip at the root of the SDcard (failed) ;
- Updating without the sim card (failed) ;
- Updating with another SD card (failed) ;
- Wipe/clean data (failed) ;
- Updating with a formated SD card (failed) ;
I suggest regrouping information and people who are concerned in this topic, as our problem is clearly not CID related.
I don't know if it is related nor relevant but if you look at the update filename, you'll see "2.05.405.2_release_160357" and my version seems to be "2.05.405.2 CL191838 release-keys"
Is "CL191838" linked to "160357" in some way ?

I installed a terminal emulator (see Terminal Emulator on Android Market) and in it, I enter "getprop". This will display a lot of things including the CID.
Oke...
I see this is not the threat for me.

I assume you've tried doing a full factory reset before attempting to apply the update?
I tried settings and then on Privacy, "Factory data reset". I also tried with power+volume down, then "recovery" then after red warning sign, power+volume up and I selected wipe cache partition and then wipe data/factory reset.
It seems that doing that only remove applications, settings, etc. but keep the system (as I'm still in 2.1-update1 after doing this factory reset).
Is there a way to completely replace the current system by the one I had when I bought my Legend?
Have ro.cid "HTC__038" and also have all described here problems with update 2.2

What is the hboot version for 2.1 update 1? (2.05.405.2) Think it might be the same as the 2.03 update (http://www.shipped-roms.com/shipped...39.35.09_7.08.35.21_release_130330_signed.exe) - so you could try running that RUU and may not hit any bootloader problems. Then there is an upgrade path from 2.03 to 2.05 and then to 3.15. I successfully followed this upgrade path myself, so worth a try!

I updated first post with a potential CID list that are allowed for this update. It seems that 044 and 038 are not allowed. Could you check what's exactly the error message when you try to update?
You can obtain this message as follows:
- Try to update ;
- When the red warning sign occurs, press power + volume up
- Then a message should be displayed in yellow. I think this topic will focus on assert failed for system files, not "signature failed" or something like that (Signature failed messages are discussed in the other thread).
If you're error message is quite the same as mine, I will update the first post adding your CID number.
I see in recovery:
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Above this shown checks like
|| getprop("ro.cid") == "HTC__xx"
and there is not my cid "HTC__038"
Ok so this is not the same problem. You should follow the other thread which is about cid issues. Sorry.

I don't really understand every step of the downgrade howto but I wonder this procedure breaks the warranty. Is this right?
If I'm wrong, I'll try doing the whole stuff this evening because I'll be very busy this afternoon (I'm not sure my boss appreciates the fact I spend the morning on my HTC instead of doing my job ).

Shouldn't void the warranty, as you won't actually be rooting - just downgrading to an earlier official ROM
EDIT: And just post here or in that thread if you get stuck along the way...

This is the Dec 11th update?
Yes but it is the full ruu not just the update if you use this you will loose all of you data and settings.
This may be a work around for those experiencing problems since the update.
this works great for the phone os issues caused by the update. but there are apps in the market that cause your phone to freak out. it's not the eris's fault or the apps fault. when upgrades happen like the way htc did this one it bound to cause some apps to freak out cause of the update. htc has no obligaton to support these apps either that's on the app creator to fix htc is only fixing it's own issues.
this is the reason why htc doe not like quick patches to thier phones. if you look at the history of the dream/G1 this is the first quick patch other than 1.30. because 1.29 allowed root level commands in the contacts area but that was to fix that problem not to fix customer complaints. i just hope htc goes back to the we'll get you a patch when we get you a patch mentality. cause it seems less problematic that way.
just my feelings

You could use megaupload? Or try uploading it to this site aka xda?
If I were to just install the 2.1 leak wouldn't that do basically the same thing? Or is this easier?
The RUU in this thread was for MR1, which is still Android 1.5. I think you're looking for the newer RUU: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Des...WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed_with_driver.exe

Attach your phone to your computer with the USB cable, and run the RUU program in Windows. It will wipe all data from your phone and return it to the stock 2.1 software, complete with the 1.49 S-ON bootloader, the default recovery image, and no root.
If you want to re-root from there, you'll have to use one of the new root methods, since your phone will be identical to the phones that Verizon is currently shipping out (with Android 2.1), not the original Android 1.5 version of the software.
Awesome, thanks a ton.

If you get a version error, you need to first run jcase's "Flash any RUU" hack.**
Note that (strictly speaking) jcase should have entitled his post "Flash any PB00IMG.zip ROM" because of another small complication: some ROMs do not have a compatible version of the "reboot" command (the RUU utility first uses the reboot command to put the phone into oem-78/RUU mode). If you insist on using the RUU utility, you can overcome this minor problem by first flashing a compatible ROM, such as PlainJane.
But, it is just as easy to flash the Leak-V3 PB00IMG.zip ROM, which produces the identical result as the "Official" RUU.
Note also that if you have used the RUU utility, them you already have USB drivers installed on your PC, and so getting adb running on the PC does not require setting up the full-blown SDK (you don't need Eclipse set up) : just download the SDK, unzip it, and you are ready to rumble.
To reiterate: if you get a version error, you need to run jcase's "Flash any RUU" hack first; after that, you can either run the HBOOT+Leak-V3 PB00IMG.zip install, or the RUU. The PB00IMG.zip method has no dependencies, and is somewhat easier.

** Note there is a minor mistake in the instructions given in the OP of the "Flash any RUU" thread; be sure to read the first dozen posts or so - the correction is given.

Hi
I have the following problem:
I've tested FroyoRedux Mod v1.9.5 with the requested radio and hboot. After that I've tried to install the original stock ROGERS 2.1 ROM. Now, the problems appeared. somehow I'm stack with the
1.76.0010 hboot, with security ON
Radio 3.22.20.17 (which should be 6.35.xx.xx) after flashing (don't ask why the update didn't take place because there was no error)
and the phone hangs at the ROGERS screen (just before start loading android).
I've tried reflash SAPPIMG from flashboot but it detects is already there and won't flash. I can not use fastboot from computer because security is ON, i don't have recovery installed because ROGERS rom took it away.
Any ideas on how I can fix this mess?
UPDATE: After reading tons of forum pots, seems I have found the source of the problem and seems that became a common issue: I've installed Rogers 2.1 manually over CM custom ROM with froyo (SPL 1.33.xxxx and RADIO 3.22.xx.xx) without knowing that Rogers will not update both RADIO and SPL.
Now all of us who did this need a solution. Anyone has an ideea?
Thanks

Hi, Yes, I've instaled Rogers 2.1 but not from RUU but from fastboot with SAPPIMG.zip
and u installed hboot from the ruu?
i think u must make a gold card... but wait for the experts
When I've installed the SAPPIMG using a goldcard, it automatically overwiten hboot, recovery and radio.
BTW: if I've formatted the goldcard, how can I create a new one now that i don't have a linux pc and i can only enter fastboot.
Thanks

Thank you for answering

I've tried it but it say "Main Version is older". Can you tell me how can I fix that or how to make a SAPPIMG.nbh file with Rogers update or even android 2.2. Or do you have such thing?
Thanks a lot.
Anyone with a solution please !?!?
Got your PM... normally i don't respond help request over pm, but i'll make an exception.
You need to redo your goldcard... all the errors you get points to a faulty goldcard.
You can post/pm the cid nr you get from the htc device + the reverse nr. you used to make the goldcard... then i can verify that you have done it correctly.
You should have made it work with the sappimg.img i have provided earlier....
All points to a bad made goldcard!
Thanks so much for your reply.
So, Let's get started . My SD CID is
035344535530324780109ac8ee0093aa
After using http://hexrev.soaa.me/
My reversed CID is
009300eec89a10804732305553445303
(first two zeros already present)
Now, I've used this code here http://psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard
and get the goldcard in the attachment.
Can you check please?
Thanks a lot
Well all ok from here.
The only thing left is how you made the hex-changes to the goldcard...
Which guide did you follow?
Read your pm!
i have exactely the same problem so when you get the solution can post it please !!!
Sure I will
Try this...
http://rapidshare.com/files/424005789/sappimg.zip
Put it on the goldcard and reboot by holding volume_down + power.
Then let it work...
Make sure there is nothing else on the goldcard!
Do not rename or anything.
This sappimg.zip is the new rogers 2.1 update... it should work :0)
Please report back :0)
From the Android Community blog:
Vodafone UK has begun the release of its Android 2.2.1 update for the HTC Magic. According to the company’s forum, the Magic Froyo update will be a two-stage OTA affair: one update to prep the phone, and the second to actually install Android 2.2.1.
The update’s release will be staggered, so you’ll have to wait for your Magic to flag up that new software is available; there doesn’t appear to be a way to manually trigger the install. Still, we’re glad to see that the ageing Magic hasn’t been left out in the cold.
“Android 2.2.1 will give customers a number of improvements including: latest Gmail and Android Market clients; ability to save applications directly onto an SD card; support for USB tethering so the phone can be used as a modem; improved support for Active Sync Exchange (email, contacts and calendar sync); enhancements to Bluetooth; and enhancements to the camera. The update also includes the latest Google security patches.”

Hopefully someone can check their log cat for the URL, or extract the update.zips from /cache before upgrading.
This if this is an OTA it will not have an ruu.. but it is interesting to see if we get yet another radio or if there is any changes from the tmobile image.

You will need the old radio + old rom (you can keep 1.33.0013d it will prob. block the actual install but with some hackery in /cache using exploid or androot you could make it work. To get the files.
The problem from my point of view is its not exactly trivial and I don't have the same hardware.
Chances are the 1st part is 1.33.0013 like the t-mobile update, and the second part the 2.2.1 update. But maybe they have another spl for us.

For steps 1&2:
If you have 1.33.0013d yes just make sure its the Vodafone nbh otherwise the update won't be fetched.
This will install the original spl + radio + rom + recovery
As for step3.. you want root to poke things but best to leave recovery alone.. androot or exploid are your better bets.
Mind you once you upgrade I can't promise you can re-root (likely the method used on the t-mobile phone will work but androot/exploid are patched iun 2.2.1)

Hi
I've been hammering at this problem for weeks now and its really frustrating. I'm hoping someone can help me out here.
I cant get my phone to update to Froyo. I'm dying to see if the update wil fix my missing wifi issue that I picked up with the last update.
Currently I'm at:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 47.26.35.04u_7.05.35.26L
Kernel version: 2.6.v29-e3993620 htc-kernel(at)and18-2 #1
Build number: 2.06.709.3 CL193617 release-keys
Software number 2.06.709.3
The phone is unbranded, bought in China. I'm not sure if it was tampered with.
My phone picks up the OTA update:

this fails on install, red triangle at about 25%
Tried doing it manually:
renamed above file to update.zip and copied to root of SD card
In HBOOT there is an error something about "legedimg" missing flashes up
Selecting recovery mode gets me a red triangle
pressed (power+vol up)
gets me into system recovery, there is a warning at the bottom "Can't open >cache >recovery>command
selected apply sdcard:update.zip, it works for a little while
get a bunch of stuff about "ro.cid" and and finally "HTC__621". "error in >sdcard >update.zip" (status 7)
Also fails.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here? HTC support has been useless. I'm now really stumped. Do I need a goldcard?
Hi! Yes, you need a goldcard because of the different CID you have and the update.
You may look for an update for your CID.
Why not root it while you're at it?
Thanks!
What is a CID? Is this not the correct update for my phone?
Are you suggesting that if I find the correct update I wont need goldcard or root?Where might I look for an update that matches my CID?
Since I'm on a mac, and dont have easy access to a PC rooting and goldcarding is a bit of a pain...
CID is Carrier ID, a number that locks your phone to carrier-specific firmware...
And yes, you need an update for your CID, then you don't need GC...
thanks. so do I have this straight:
1. My phone is locked to take only carrier specific firmware (even though its not actually sim-locked since I can use any sim I want) Sooo... "debranding" wont actually help
2. an update with the correct CID would work - though I dont know which one I need.
3. a goldcard would let me install the latest update via update.zip despite the CID issue
When I spoke to HTC support they said something about my phone originally belonging to Vodafone Germany. It was strange since I definitely have the chinese version loaded. I could try loading the vodafone germany update but then wont my phone become sim-locked again?
Am I getting this right? Thanks you have been a great help!
1. SIM lock and CID lock are two different things...
2. Yes, if the HTC said Voda Germandy, they're probably right...I presume you have purchased it from someone who used it before?
3. Of this I'm not sure, but It wil definitely help you root your Phone...
If you don't want to root, you can try to find an RUU upgrade - that's and app that will upgrade your phone from PC - try www.shipped-roms.com. But again, you need one that matches your CID.
edit: If you flash the RUU, rooting will be harder

Eemm, no. It was "new". They probably did something dodgy to keep the price down. Somehow, despite the CID issue, they were able to install the chinese firmware. It doesn't make much sense.

As far as I can see the latest for Vodafone Germany is "RUU_Legend_Vodafone_AT_GER_Mobilkom_1.31.177.3_Radio_47.26.35.04_7.05.35.26L_release_126862_signed.exe"
I dont think this is actually Froyo?
That might mean that a goldcard is the only option. I take it the goldcard would essentially allow me to bypass the CID check and install whatever update I wanted?
I tried to install the latest vodafone version via update.zip on the SDcard, no luck, "assert failed"... status 7...
Sorted!
Well, I managed to sort mine out and upgrade to Froyo. And I got my WIFI back too!
Very simple...
1. Create Goldcard: Droid Den - Android Guide: How To Create a Gold Card
2. Install RUU (Legend Froyo WWE): Index of /shipped/Legend/
Worked a treat and was actually very simple using the goldcard helper app they recommend on that post. You need access to PC.
I tried updating using update.zip through recovery but that didnt work.
Phone is now working 100%.
I suppose issues might come up when I try to update next time OTA (if there is another OTA for legend), but worse case scenario I will have to use another RUU.
glad it worked out for you... can't imagine going trhough the stress
that's why im waiting for the Official OTA
Good it worked
@Qksi1ver: why are you waiting for OTA?If you root now, you have a shot at S-OFF, If you update your HBOOT, you wont be able to S-OFF...just sayin...

Hi guys,
I've tried many ways to fix and hope that some light could be shed from you
- Trying to get back to stock build after downgrading to 1.31 via this process wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Legend:_Full_Update_Guide
- The ‘rooting tools’ in step 2 of 2nd section were not available anywhere so tried other avenues to root
- None successful
- After lots of playing around – I decided to try and get back to latest stock build
- Ran the uncracking.bat file which was installed during the Cyanogenmod process (which I hoped would restore things)
- Not successful
- I’m thinking that maybe the adb shell command from the Cyanogenmod process may have caused some issue: /data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/misc1-2.img
- Trying the HTC OTA system update (from Android 2.1 to 2.2) fails while trying to update and goes into the recovery screen (red triangle with exclamation mark, black background) <<<<<<<<<
- Then, when pushing vol up and power the following error is shown:-
----> E:Error in /sdcard/download/OTA_Legend_Froyo_S_HTC_WWE_3.15.405.3-2.05.405.2_P_release_1603576x6ndkkwfpxcjvla.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Doing a general factory reset does not seem to help.
I do not need to keep any apps or data, a complete wipe so I can start afresh would be great if possible!
Thanks

Oh dear
I tried to return to stock rom by running the wwe rom from shipped-roms only got the error 155. Then extracted the rom.zip from the exe and flash that no go, couldn't work out a way to do it successfully.

Cool.. It doesn't have to be stock. All I need is 2.2 or 2.3 (I was trying for cyanogenmod 7.2). At the moment it's stuck on a buggy 2.1!
I'm not sure of the current state, as I said I think going half way through the cyanogenmod kinda of changed something important ( eg. /data/local/flash_image misc /data/local/misc1-2.img via ADB).
Do you know of any way I could make either of these OSs work, with the minimum of hassle?

1st thing 1st, unlock your bootloader.
2ndly, once unlocked, flash cwm.
3rd, download any ROM you want (lets pick cm 7.2 for starting point since you said no need for stock ROM) then put into your sd card.
Lastly, boot into cwm. Wipe all (data, cache, dalvik cache) then Flash(install) ROM.
Thats it (assuming your device is not usb bricked or hard bricked and you do all the steps correctly).
How?
To unlock, go to htc web site or google "unlock bootloader+htc dev"
Flash cwm? Go to dev section, theres a thread of cwm, follow "s-off" method (of course after unlocking your BL.
Boot into cwm? Shut down/turn off your phone. Once it off, press power button and volume down at the same time, hold it fow few moment before release it.
Once in cwm, install from sd card (you will know once you in it)
Then? Enjoy ur legend and flash any ROM once you got bored with cm7!

Thanks for the response.
Firstly: -
- HTC Sync is not reading my (I think needed for HTCDev boot unlock)
- I did try just running the HTC Dev RUU - but it said I need to update the ROM(?) (from Build 1.31), which I believe is done by the HTC OTA update, which doesn't work
HBOOT 1.00
S-ON
Build 1.31
Not allowing update as loops into recovery with E:Error in /sdcard/download/OTA_Legend_Froyo_S_HTC_WWE_3.15.405.3-2.05.405.2_P_release_1603576x6ndkkwfpxcjvla.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted.

No, you dont need htc sync. i've never installed htc sync either. you only need the driver (which is logically will be installed along with htc sync but also can be installed separately and it is needed so that your device will be recognized when you boot it into fastboot mode) and no, you no need to upgrade ROM, you only need to upgrade your bootloader (that HBOOT 1.00) and it is not updated through OTA.
Seriously, it took me only 2 hours (including downloading and installing SDK, driver, waiting for unlock file from htc etc) last time i did it and i have done it twice which 2nd time (because i had usb soft brick) is much more shorter as i saved the unlock file and it seems can be reused. What takes longer for me at that time is to understand the whole process, reading and researching through multiple sites but now you have a guide, so all you have to do is to read the instructions carefully. Once you unlock your bootloader and flash cwm, everything will be super easy (assuming your device doesn't have any defects from the beginning.)
Ok, thanks very much feed3. Will try this again based your info and the mini guide I've just written myself.
But before I go ahead, I'd rather not touch it than to make it unusable.
What does USB Bricked and Hard Bricked mean?
Thanks

in short, hard bricked means your phone is totally unuseable, usually because of hardware defects but also might be cause by flashing wrong ROM, for example flashing ROM that actually not built for your device. Usually, you cannot do anything with it, cannot enter fastboot, recovery etc. Soft brick is repairable, you still can boot to recovery or even to the OS. Might be caused by some partition corruption (in the case of usb bricked, it is /misc partition).
If you use htc dev path to unlock your bootloader, no need for gold card. Thats for sure.
If your phone is usb soft bricked (among the symptoms are you will be able to boot into the OS ONLY if your phone are pluged in into usb, and/or adb not working at all) then google or search in xda for "htc legend+usb brick" and fix it. I'm pretty sure only then you can update your HBOOT and therefore unlock your bootloader via htc dev.
Once done, go to HERE and flash cwm using s-off method (dont care about your s-on that you see in your bootloader, the "UNLOCKED" word in it is more important)
In response:-
Thanks for the clarification.
- when using the process here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498298&page=7 - and trying to get the bootloader to run the LEGEIMG.zip file, it flashes up stating "no image or wrong image!", it runs too fast to read it exactly.
- then looking at the same error this guy was getting at (see the 'EDIT: It seems the LEGEIMG' post onwards) http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1657826 - they have the same Vodfone Legend as me, a gold card had to be used to do the above update process (which should update HBOOT).
- this is the only HBOOT update process I've seen, but isn't clear as they look like they're on 2.2 and HBOOT 1.01.

EXACTLY the same error message that you got, HERE and the op solve it.
Btw, during unlocking my bootloader, i've never encounter (or did i forget already??) to requiring this zip file. Isn't bootloader RUU from HTCdev is all we need? I think thats the only file i have to get (apart from the unlock bin file of course) if my memory doesn't cheat me..
Sure - but as the guy mentions formatting to FAT32, that's usually associated with goldcard creation right.
I've ran the bootloader RUU from HTC Dev a few times, and it always says that the ROM (HBOOT, build(?)) needs updating. Thus trying the aforementioned process (post 62 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498298&page=7) to try and get the Rom (HBOOT) updated, which didn't work, which then loops back round to dealing with the zip file read error.

I'm getting more confuse here. I've never use goldcard as i reluctant to "sacrifice" my one and only card but here i am with unlocked bootloader. The RUU file is the one that will update your bootloader. Read instructions at htc dev carefully.. good luck..

You need to read this post by blay0, it instructs how to update hboot without going back to stock, using gold card or any other outdated method of rooting (unless your on hboot less than 1.00 then you should follow the s-off method of rooting)

I think the reason I can't do the blay0 method is because of the stock sd card I'm using. It's not picking up the rom zip file.
I've ordered another http://www.kikatek.com/P188409/SDC10-8GB-Kingston-MicroSDHC-8GB-Card-Class-10?source=froogle
Will try again, and if that doesn't work - try this other method (as the guy here has HBOOT 1.00 and a Vodafone Legend too) http://chrg.zxq.net/htc-legend-root.html.
Many thanks for all your help people.
Will report back any success for the benefit of others.

Hi guys,
Good news! I unlocked the bootloader with my 'new' SD card using the blay0 process (from the last post).
This is the first time I've done this though, and am just trying to figure out how to flash CyanogenMod 7.2.
ROM Manager doesn't work with 2.1 (installed) any more.
Can someone please briefly explain how I would flash.
Many thanks

Ah, done !! Woohoo!
That was lots of work. Well, easy via the HTCDev method <<
To get 7.2 on followed here:-
see s-off method to install recovery image http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290841&highlight=clockwork
To get into the recovery – use the col down + power button
Follow Method via Recovery here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Legend:_Full_Update_Guide
Good luck everyone and thanks again XDA

Hello,
take the recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-legend.zip , put it on your SD-card and rename it to update.zip. Then use th S-ON-method from here and you will have no problem.
so there is no way to return the legend back to stock rom after all ?
