Just rooted my Droid X (Thanks XDA!) and am using "Wireless Tether" but only allows for unsecure (no password) connections it seems. Wondering what better options are out there for the fastest connection? I'm a MS consultant and need to VPN for work on the road, connections are weak-sauce to say the least. Wondering what your experiences have been USB vs WIFI for best speeds?
Go with the TBH 3G hotspot "fix" easy to do and works great with vpn. Speed is the same between Wireless Tether and the 3G app. Never used any usb tether on it so no input.
To turn on the password protection for Wireless Tether. open up the app>settings>Enable Wifi-Encryption.
Thanks, will research TBH.. I know how to enable the encryption but it doesn't connect with it. Thanks.

speaking of wireless tether..
mine doesnt seem to actually close the connection. data stops and the phone says everything is turned off, but other devices can still see the Ad-Hoc connection (devices that were turned on after i turned it off)
so obviously my battery lifes tanks after this until i restart.
any thoughts?
Dnak for wireless tether try changing the network name(ssn) to something different. If you've already done that then try putting it back to default (AndroidTether).
Also look at the "access control" settings. There you can allow/deny connections. That can be enabled and used as a security measure. Mine sometimes blocks my ip for some reason, just have to "allow" it again.
Or try going to settings > apps > manage apps > wireless tether, and force stop(if needed), clear cache and CLEAR DATA. Clear data is the important part. Hope that helps

I'm using an IDEOS X5 from 2degrees NZ. I'm in Dunedin, so I need to enable roaming data access (my phone co offers data services via another network in my home town).
I have identical ADSL routers (Dynalink RTA1025WE) at home and work.
If I visit my work, wifi enables as expected, and disables when I leave; mobile data works from there.
When I go home, wifi enables as expected, but after I leave the house I cannot access mobile data unless I manually enable Wireless & Networks => Mobile networks => Data enabled
Why would this be? Is there some AP-specific setting I can clear to stop this behaviour?
Are you still using the stock rom? have you disable the data usage reminder that pops up when the wifi disconnects?
Using any apps like juice defender?
I'm in Dunedin too =)

I have found a fairly easy way to tether the 3g connection on my droid x to my a500. The wireless tether app in the market was not working at all, neither was barnacle.
Attached is the wifi tether app which does work, download and install it on your phone.
Once installed and running; the a500 will see the network and connect to it, but still no internet when the browser is opened.
To fix that: open it and go to menu > settings > Change LAN > and select 192.168.3.0/24.
Hooray, it works; Just in time for a road trip
I hope this is helpful for others.

Thank you for the tip.
Did you try the "Change LAN" fix for thother tether apps? Which phone ROM are you using?
For the other tether apps my a500 did not recognize the network at all.
I am using the stock rom for a500;

I'm having the same problem; no recognition that they hotspot even exists.
My a500 is rooted, but other than that, it's stock. Did you have to do anything to it?
acer inconia 500a wireless tetering galaxy s
my solution is
in Galaxy S settings-wireless connections-use as cellular modem-mobile AP
in Acer Inconia 500 turn ON the wireless - it should recognize the Galaxy S
I use a USB connection between the two to use the 500 battery on the Galaxy S
that's it
I just downloaded FoxFi (free app) from the market, had it set up and running on my Razr Maxx in a couple minutes, and it's been problem-free since. No settings on the tablet needed at all. Set your password on the phone, enter it on the A500, good to go.
Cool, great, works
I use Barnacle on my phone and it works fine.
This is more dependant on your phone (ROM, kernel, tethering app, etc.) than it is on the A500. I was tethering fine between my A500 and my Sprint HTC Evo 4G until the latest Gingerbread update, where Sprint purposely broke it with the new kernel. Running a non-stock kernel solved that problem for me.
This will continue to resurface as a problem for most phones because the service providers don't want you tethering without paying the extra $ for the feature.
i wouldnt use foxfi, i read somewhere that they gather info (i think its in the permission box you check off)
but if you install the AD-HOC wifi patch it wifi teather or wireless tether should work just fine.
just google ad-hoc wifi patch (i cant post it) heck i found it in the dev section
During my recent probe to find the best way to tether my phone having access to all the settings i came across this little apk for the android phones which replaces the built in system.
Your phone must be rooted to use this file, i know some networks like sprint lockdown the tether options, this gets around that issue.
I dont know if its been posted here before or not, but i hope some of you guys may find it useful and the page is very useful info.

Try it on my note running midnote ICS 3.2. Doesn't work, my note freeze and have to reboot.
whats wrong with the tethering and portable hotspot setting in the wireless and networks... it is simple to use and works great..no root needed.... its on the stock rom...
If third party tethering app, then i say 'wireless tether' is better
It supports thethring via blutooth too, As well having mac security option.

Both my daughter's Macbook Air and my wife's Dell laptop have successfully connected wirelessly to my Galaxy Note and downloaded stuff from the Net. With H+ speed it is as quick as my ADSL+ connection at home!
It is so easy to setup ... Settings > Wireless and Network > Tethering and Portable hotspot. Make sure you choose a good password!
I know it's not rocket science. I consider my technically sound.
But for the life of me, I can't tether my Nexus 7 to my Galaxy S3 using both Wifi Hotspot AND Bluetooth.
With Wifi Hotspot, my Nexus 7 shows connected and has excellent signal strength, but I cannot connect to any website or access the play store. It's like no data is going through.
The same with my bluetooth connect. It shows it's paired and connected, but no internet data.
I called Fido (my carrier and they say I have tethering enabled on my account - of course it should be enabled cause I've tethered before)
Please help me with this.
I've tethered my N7 to my Evo LTE with wifi tons of times. Are you sure the phone is actually pushing out data? Try tethering your laptop or something to it to see if it's the phone or tab.
Maybe you need to reboot.. both devices... I use mine all day long hotspot with my gs3 with no problems

I've rebooted countless times on both devices.
Are you rooted for both devices? Do you use the built-in tether option on the S3 or do you use a third party app?
I'm non-rooted for both my devices.
Does your data plan allow tethering? I'm able to tether my Nexus to my Lumia 710 but no data passes through. I need to enable the "WiFi Hotspot" feature on T-Mobiles site for an additional monthly cost.

He said in the OP he has tethering on his plan >.>
On another note... I'm on Tmobile and I tether from my G2 to both laptop and tablet, and I dont pay any extra fees
When you tether from bluetooth, pull down the notification drawer and look at the bottom.
Does it say "Bluetooth Tethered" or does it say "No Internet Connection" instead?
For me, I know even after pairing my phone and my tablet, I have to go into Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > Tethering and Portable Hotspot > and check off Bluetooth Tethering.
And after that, sometimes I have to go back to the bluetooth menu of either device and click on the other device so it actually connects.
If its working, you should see the words "Connected" below your phone in the bluetooth menu of your tablet.
And the notification drawer should say "Bluetooth Tethered"
Not sure what may be wrong with your wifi hotspot though.

I called to check and the rep says I do. But he does sound like a newbie though.
I'll call back and see if another rep (hopefully more knowledgeable) can assist me.
Thanks for all who chimed with your suggestions. I will press thanks for all of you.
I called back Fido and everything seemed normal. Tethering was enabled as it always should on my account.
What he did was push some information to the server which I guess automatically sets up my phones settings to match up with Fidos settings. Told me to power cycle for 30 seconds after we hung up. I did so, and after it started up, I heard a notification on my Nexus 7 which I knew instantly that whatever he did worked.
On my tablet I use PDAnet from the Play Market.
On my phone I use FoxFi from the Play Market.
Both Apps are free & usually do not require ROOT on either device.
1) Once both Apps are installed turn on Bluetooth on your tablet. (Find your Settings App either in your App Drawer or by pulling your Notification Bar & selecting the Settings button next to your rotation lock.)
2) Open PDAnet on the tablet.
3) Hit CONFIGURE in the main screen of PDAnet.
4) Select ANDROID (BLUETOOTH).
5) Now open FoxFi on your phone.
6) Check the box next to ACTIVATE BLUETOOTH DUN. This will turn on your Bluetooth & make your device discoverable.
7) A warning box will appear. Select YES.
8) Go back to your tablet & PDAnet.
9) Hit the option to start scanning.
10) After a few seconds your phone should appear.
11) Select the name of your phone. Mine was ADR6350.
12) On your tablet select CONNECT.
13) A warning will appear. Check the box that says I TRUST THIS APPLICATION. Then select OK.
Open your tablet's Chrome Browser & try opening a website. You should be up & running now.

Do not worry, just set yr phone hotspot security to WEP ,it should work. I faced d same problem with you in d begining. Try it!
i finally rooted my moto X pure. hotspot does not work on its own and i dont know how to edit the settings for it. So i tried looking for apps but some of them that i once had does not work.
Barnacle doesnt work
Wifi tether router gives a giant mcafee warning stating its a threat with Android/Bokbe.A!Gen or Malware for basic
FoxFi i have to pay 8 dollars for it when i didnt need to before
clockworkmod works but its usb tether
any other options?
Is your carrier restricting you from using your data plan to host a WiFi hotspot? Mine works just fine with no additional apps required. When I first turned it on, it made sure my data plan supported the feature then worked as expected.

yeah i tried that, doesnt work. thanks.
ill either unroot entirely or switch to another OS
use clockworkmod on a pc and make that pc a gateway for a wireless router (set pc ip address manually to something static) configure the router properly, then just connect all your other devices to that wireless router
UPDATE:
Wifi tether creator replied to my email saying mcafee has a false positive on it because its root, mcafee never tested it.
but what i did discover is this. when i played with the wifi tether app, they have the ability to allow tether completely wifi. in it contained was a LTE patch to allow tethering and it worked. if anyone is able to get the patch out, then jackpot we have tether ability
