ScreenCaptureService - Vibrant General

So I was messing with my phone, showing off JK6 and all it's glory to a friend of mine who also has a Vibrant, when suddenly the phone lagged a bit and I heard a camera shutter. Then a little pop-up came up saying the screen capture had been saved. I look in my gallery, and lo and behold, it actually screen captured! And I'm not even rooted! I look in my running applications, and there it is, ScreenCaptureService (com.sec.android.app.screencapture).
Now after a good half hour of Googling, I found out that the Tab can take screenshots by holding down the back button then hitting the power button. But I wasn't even near the power button when it happened, so that couldn't be it. I also found that in the leaked Froyo builds for the Epic 4G, a few people had the same thing with a ScreenCaptureService in their running applications. Someone mentioned you had to hold down the back button then hit home to capture, but I tried pretty much all the methods under the sun and to no avail.
Has anyone else stumbled upon this and/or found out what the key combo is?

it's a mystery.. lol but we all follow the same pattern.. we discovered it by accident once but never able to duplicate it again..

Happened 3 times. Couldnt duplicate it

how? i know i was pressing down the back button to exit zedge... then click! picture saved i dont really know what triggered it other than the back button was involved..

I have tried to duplicate this as well since I have come across it many times. When you guys figure it out let me know! Lol

I have noticed this too and ONLY when I am in the messaging app. I can be typing something and it randomly takes a screenshot. I dont know what combination of keys are used but Its kinda annoying and I would like to turn it off without completely removing it.

Just happened to me and by reading the thread it's random as hell. I was in the "Location and Security" settings and I heard the camera shutter sound. Like everyone else I tried to duplicate it and couldn't.

Pressing the back and power button started the screencaptureservice but did not take a screen shot. I killed it in running services and tried pretty much every button combo, nothing... Pressed back and power button again and sreencaptureservice is running again, but still no screenshots...

yes, looks like BACK and POWER call for screencapture service. so anyone figured out how to actually take one ?

It's so funny to me how this forum is loaded with so many intelligent people and we can't figure this out. For those who did get it to work, are you stock or on a custom rom?
When I try back + power I am not able to get the screencapture app to open. My custom ROM does have the .apk included though.
It would be nice to see if we can get this working for those who do not want a 3rd party app or root.... plus, I dont think any other android phone has this feature.

there is no screen capture app. (there is apk file). all it does is launch the service. I suppose there is some sort of weird key press combinations to actually take the shot

the .apk (app) is in system/app... I understand there is no icon in the app drawer or anything, ha.

Hi,
Just use ShootMe (free from market) and when you shake your phone will get a screen capture.

yes but you have to be root i think.

Been trying to figure this out off and on for a while now. Holding the back button definitely activates the screencapturesevice but I can't for the life of me get it to take a screenshot. My girl has done it on accident but had no idea what she did. Kind of fun to have a froyo "puzzle" to solve though. Guess I know what I'm doing on the flight home today lol.

I have a I9000M and to take a screen shot using this stupid service you hold your finger on the back button and tap the home button, I noticed that the Vibrant is missing a home button.
My problem is that sometimes this service starts up and goes into screen capture mode just by tapping the back button and the only way I can get out of this mode is to take a screen shot. So I currently have over 200 screens of various crap that I dont want.
Does anyone know what would happen if I removed this service completely?

I think the home button on the galaxy is that big button in between the menu and back. We may be only randomly getting screen caps because of a software hangup causing the multipress screen cap combo. Perhaps the vibrant soft keys are not multitouch whereas the home button on the galaxy is a separate device that allows holding the back button and hitting that home button at the same time.
and also, some android devices do not have home buttons.

Button on top of N1

Is there no other way to get the phone out of idle then pressing the button on the top of the phone?
it is a pain in the ass.
I agree, its not the most convenient.
Pressing the tracker ball does it for me.
lilHermit
You'll get used to it in no time!
Trackball method does not work for me.
doesnt work for me either, the tracker ball would be nice...
did you change an option for that?
The track ball doest do it for me either. I don't mind using the button on top of the phone. I've always used HTC phones and a lot of them use the button on top to wake it up. You should get used to it pretty quick.
Damn, I was hoping the trackball would work... I disliked this about the Droid as well. It takes two hands to unlock the phone, doesn't it? The G1 and MT3G methods were better.
shouldn't we be able to remap the button pressed to work with the trackball? (with root access that is)
i agree...im not liking the top button to wake up the phone...trackball does not wake it for me either...
CLOCK APP
I just realized if you open the clock application, and let the phone go to sleep, then you can "Turn it on" with the trackball or volume rocker.
Now if there was a way to have the phone set to "Sleep = Clock" we'd be golden; the clock screen doen't look that bad, either.
I will say, the button placement on the top is much better than the Motorola droid. I was worried myself, but I got used to it super fast, and it isn't an issue at all.
(Former G1 owner, used to just pressing menu twice)
Just download "Keyguard Disabler" from the Android Market. It will allow you to use the trackball to turn the screen back on.
The screen is capacitive touch, and so is the "hardware" buttons.
If you want to be able to power up the phone from sleep with these buttons, that would require the capacitive touchscreen to be active while the phone is sleeping.
Wouldn't that affect the battery life?

Agreed. look here too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613864&page=2
David1171 has a partial solution. Problem is I'm guessing, that there is no way to setup a double tap. Maybe someone knows.
I'm hoping that a future release of spare parts will have a setting for both a double or triple tap of the track bar to wake up, with or without the slide lock. ( I think that the slide lock would be less annoying if the track ball woke it up first instead of the poorly located power button) Also I am hoping that it will have settings to adjust the trackball notification flash speed and color for different google apps.
Just to let you know:
There is a thread about the trackball for wakeup thing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5337345
I got used to it pretty fast, its funny my other phone is a G1 and i find myself trying to unlock it by pushing up top all the time now haha, just become instinct.
I've heard a lot of people say they have trouble unlocking the Nexus One with one hand, but personally I have no trouble unlocking the device with one hand... with either hand.

This person does not own a Nexus One.
Lockbot from market. Don't need pro, the free version will do.
Dunno why they copied the iPhone with the slide to unlock, with the magic its so easy you press the power button which is near the trackball then press menu.
It would be great if you could just press trackball then menu button to unlock.

Back button not responding.

My back button on the front capacitive screen won't respond the first time, I have to keep on hitting it until it registers. Anyone else have this issue?
I did some research and found out that the Vibrant was having the same issue with their home button.
Those buttons are my biggest gripe with the phone. You have to REALLY FREAKIN press on them. On the Evo, you just need to touch them lightly. I really love the bottom buttons on the evo. With the epic, touching them doesn't work. You need to press. Sometimes more than once. I also end up accidentally long pressing just to get it to work sometimes.
Samsung needs to learn from HTC and fix their buttons.

It is not just you. Some are genuinely faulty. I see this being hte first major defect of this device. The back key on some seems to be worse than the search, home and menu keys. I had to replace my first Epic because of it.
I'm dealing with this, and the battery charging issue.
Ya I bought six epics for my whole family today. 4 are fine and 2 have back button issues. To the point where on one I have to push down severly hard. I am taking it back tommorow and going to see if they can swap it out.
I hope mune is not like this when I get it
My issue is with the MENU button and I notice that the feedback is the strongest on the HOME button. Sounds like the Epic is going back tomorrow.
This can probably be fixed with a software patch. If its common among all galaxy s phones, im sure samsung will issue a patch for this.
Gosh, reading all these post and trolling irc as the day wenton, I'm gad to only suffer the biggest problem of the epic, not being able to put it down! And maybe the spacebar, lol.

yea the ones that work are awesome... but the back button is unusable at all on 2 of mine so gotta get them replaced. Hopefully they still have a few left.
Yeah I noticed that too, it is inconsistent sometimes with almost all of them.
Sometimes you lightly tap it and it goes and than other times you will do it 3-4 times before it goes.
anyway to set the bottom buttons (back, home etc..) to be lid longer time?
Possible Solution: I do not have mine yet, but this is what I noticed from watching the reviews. If the lights are OFF on the buttons you need to press them more than once. If the lights are ON they will be responsive.
The light timer is linked to the keyboard backlight timer. Increase the keyboard timer(in settings) and the buttons will stay on longer as well, 30 seconds should be a good setting.
Again, I do not have my phone yet. Can someone with the issue please confirm this is a proper solution?

Back Button Issue
Got my Epic on 8/31 at about noon. I spent about 4 hours setting it up and did not even try making a call (except for one very short call). While working on the setup I noticed I had to hit the back button anywhere from 3 to 5 times and sometimes I really had to press hard.
Once I starting making calls with it I noticed that it had a lot of static and each call made it worse. Took it back to Sprint and got a new one. The new phone has NO issues with the back key!
Makes it seem like a hardware issue.

Unfortunately most people having this problem are having it when the lights are on. A lot of people have returned their epics already due to the buttons on the bottom....
I am having the same problem with the keys, they all need to be a lot more responsive. The back key is the worse.. Sometimes I have to press it 10 times for it to work.

I find that when i stop for a second and then press it good and hard, it works. I don't like that... but it never completely fails on me.
I hope they fan fix it so that you just need to slide your finger over it to make it work. That's how the Evo is. I think everyone would prefer that.

screen captures

Hi, the other day, I was holding my home button to get to the app/multitask menu, at least that was what I thought I was holding, and then a photoshoot sound was emitted from my phone. Then I went to my sd card, and there was a ScreenCapture folder with an image of my desktop...
How did that happen?, now I want to take some screens of my phone and I don't know how, and don't want to install some app, since I fugure I can allready do it, just don't know how
Thanks!
are you sure you don't have "shootme" installed? it takes a screenshot if you shake the phone and makes a picture shot sound...
I dont think I got it, maybe if it came with nero v3, wich is the rom am using, but I dont think so
Its a hidden feature in you're phone no one really knows how to make it work
If you hit home and back simultaneously it'll do that if the feature is supported.

Screen Capture on Mesmerize too
I just installed the Froyo EA11+Root on my mesmerize and once in a while it will randomly take a pic too. I go to my gallery and theres the screen capture pic, kinda annoying sometimes because after the pic is taken it wont let me turn off the screen for about 5 min or even turn off my phone like if the power button didnt work.
well... it was a time since I've created this post... Well I could never find the thing, and never worked any combination of keys.
If it is usefull to somebody, in my opinion ShootMe works great and is fast and easy.
Thanks everybody for the help!

generally speaking my experience has been that the phone only natively screen captures when there is a system level crash that does not force a reboot ive only had this happen a few times. Most often when this hapens my phone also becomes unresponsive as the system is likely frozen due to the aformentioned system crash.
I've just used the Android SDK method.
Has anyone noticed any change in picture quality with the Shootme app?

[Q] Best way to use HD2 without buttons? (hard buttons no longer work on my phone.)

So i've been dealing with this for the last week or so and I finally decided to stop searching and scouring the internet and ask for some help from my XDA brethren.
I don't exactly know how or why, but all the hard buttons on my HD2 do not work anymore. Volume up and down, pick up, home, menu, back, and hang up buttons... all not working. They all stopped working at the same time.
I don't really care except for the fact that I cannot wake my phone up after it locks/sleeps. I tried an app called Shake and Wake with no luck. Any sugguestions? or should I just look for a new phone? I really don't want to give up on my HD2... we've been through a lot! Thanks a ton you guys, I really appreciate it.
If I were you I would head on over to the nexus one threads and ask the question.
That phone only has one button, and some folk have had that not work, so they are used to the problem, and I'm sure they will have a solution for you. Worth a try anyway........
Button Savior - free from Market
Jadrobe, I really like button saviour but that still doesn't solve my problem, how do I wake the phone up without any buttons?!!
do your volume buttons work? if so, you could use ButtonRemapper (paid app) to remap one of your volume buttons to work as your power button and do the rest with button savior.
Nope, none of the buttons work!! I'm screwed!

Pretty much. If you have one working button then you could use an app called "button remapper"
Have you flashed back to stock/something different yet? Seems a touch coincidental that they all go at once. The bottom 5, or the two volume yea, cos they're on two separate input busses, but for both to fail together... not saying it couldn't happen, just saying it could be something else.
If there not working how do you turn on your phone?
When I slide the battery into the phone it automatically boots up as if I pushed in the power button.. it never used to do that before.
And also right after it powers up it sends me straight to slide to shut down which kind of makes me believe I may have the power button stuck on or something? I'm going to try to flash the stock rom and see what happens. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks!
Dude!! Proximity Screen Off (look in Abdroid Themes and Apps sub-forum) could fix you up in combination with button savior !
It has an option to use the prox sensor to put your phone to sleep and to wake it. The downside is it will drain your battery faster than normal because the prox sensor is in use when the screen's off. But it could keep your phone useable til you can get your buttons fixed (probly just your power button is malfunctioning it sounds like to me)

Thanks a ton Huggs. I'll definitely look into it, as the main reason I love this phone is for Android roms!

Being able to just touch the home button to unlock, instead of actually pressing it??

ok. before i received my s7e, i saw on some tips and tricks vid, that you can change having to push the home button down, to get to the fingerprint unlock, to just touching the home button, and the fingerprint unlock will kick in. but now that i've got my s7e, i have watched at least twenty vids, and haven't found it again. a google search turned up nothing. so, does anyone know how to do this? if so, can you direct me to the instructions, or just outline it?

If the screen is ON, but locked, you don't need to press the button. But for the fingerprint reader to work the screen must be on, so you either need to press the home button or the power button first.

first, m3ddog, the whole idea is NOT to have to press the home button, but to just touch it. second, brava27, i have searched through out the board, and have not found a single answer to this. what i have found is people misunderstanding this, like the other quotes on here. so if you have nothing substantive to add, stfu! lastly, meyerweb, the whole point is that the screen is OFF. i said when the screen is off, or only the "always on" feature is showing, there is an app, which turns the home button into a capacitive button, so you can just touch it to launch the lockscreen, instead of depressing it. that is the entire reason for the thread, to get to the lockscreen where i can use my fingerprint, without having to acutally depress the home button. hope that clears it all up.

Can I ask why you are so against pressing the home button? Is yours defective? Are you trying to avoid wear & tear?
There is a solution of sorts.. install gravity screen pro, which turns on your screen when you pick up your phone.. then you just touch your finger to the fingerprint reader and wala

yeah, the whole idea is past experiences with wear and tear of home buttons being pressed so much they fail. and my problem with your other solution, if i am right, is that the sensors are always on, looking for you to pick up your device, which kills battery life. if i'm wrong about this, please correct me, however. the other thing is i saw it in a tips and tricks video, and it worked perfectly for the reviewer. but now i can't find that video, and didn't write down what it was. but i might try your gravity screen pro. thanks for the tip.

meyerweb, you obviously didn't understand perfectly well what i said, because i said that i saw a video, where the reviewer DID use this technique to get to the lock screen several times, so it obviously DOES exist. just because it doesn't come into contact with your little world, does not mean it doesn't exist.
