Finally happy with my Vibrant... For today anyway :) - Vibrant General

So I've been going flash crazy the last 2 or 3 weeks with custom ROMs and stock builds. It's an addiction I tell you!
Finally, I found a configuration that works great for me after many soft bricks trying to figure out how everything works.
Stock JI6, launcherpro, with kernel JAC_AND_KING_KERNEL_FOR_JI_BUILDS so that I can run voodoo lag fix. Also flashed JI6_Modem.
My phone has never ran faster. Waiting to see how battery life is with this combo.
Tried all of the leaked/customized Froyo build as well as custom Eclair and just keep coming back to JI6.

I stopped reading at "Stock JI6"

Indeed. LOL!

The stock JI6 is pretty decent for me but not as great as the custom roms we have here.

Yeah, if I had to chose a custom ROM, it would be Axura 2.1. I especially like the animation on it. Hell, now I'm thinking about going back to it
I think me going back to stock JI6 was mainly because I kept soft bricking my phone when installing the voodoo lag fix. Once I finally got it to work, it worked great and "perceivied speed" seems to have improved. It was a great learning experience. I think this phone is near impossible to permanently brick.

Self explanatory...

Is it worth going from stock to MoDaCo?

Hello-
First off, please excuse my n00bness - I'm from the world of Windows Mobile hacking, and this Android stuff is really confusing me.
I've been tolerating stock for a while, but the slowness is really getting to me - today I clocked my Hero at 12 seconds to wake up from standby, which is just unacceptable. I'd like to know if there are any significant speed benefits to going from stock to the latest MoDaCo rom? Are there any downsides? I read the post over at modaco.com, but couldn't see any "known issues".
Thanks for any input,
TM
Take the plunge.
I went from stock to Fresh and overlayed Modaco. My uptime shot to 90%, 80% and stuck at 70%.
I reflashed to Stock then back to Modaco. I am now at around 15% uptime. I removed the bloatware from Sprint and LOVE the speed of this phone now. Its what I expected when I bought it.
I have no doubt that you'll see a speed increase with Modaco. Especially if you remove the sprint apps once you load Modaco.
Thanks for all the replies. One more question though, are there any big known issues with the latest MoDaCo? I thought I read something about BT not working, or something to that extent.
it's worth it to switch to any custom rom. bluetooth is just something thats messed up with our 1.5 builds.

you will notice a big difference switching to modaco 2.2... and im not experiencing any BT issues at all... matter or fact, im not experiencing ANY issues with anything using this rom...
Heck, anything is better than stock.
especially since we have a custom kernel now its definitely worth it to go to any custom rom, especially modaco 2.2
Im using fresh. I used the kitchen to root my phone and installed 1.1. No problems so far except that the voice recorder app keep crashing for some reason. I did an upgrade without wiping though so that might be my problem.
Its a lot faster and the tether app is awesome!
Ok, so far so good. Got everything flashed, but how do I get rid of things like Stocks/Sprint TV/NFL/etc? Just follow the generic guide (for any rooted Hero) I saw?
I ran stok for about 6 hours and decided that I didnt pay that much money for a smart phone that was that slow.
I flashed Fresh 1.0 to start and I have tried just about all the roms that are out there. Including modaco 2.2 and it may just be that I started with fresh but I always seem to go back to it over the rest, and add onto that the modaco kernel with compcache and then doing the config tweak found here my phone just flies now.
I now have it set to where I feel a phone at this price point should be to start.
edit: to remove the apps follow the instructions found here

Use the Fresh Kitchen to pull any you don't want.
You know what? I've flashed MoDaCo's ROM before, but it was just too much like stock (except for the obvious speed increases). I flashed Fresh 1.1, and loved it because it had the speed of MoDaCo's, plus the Espresso UI. Then I recently flashed Gumbo Kernel to my phone, and omgwtfzorz my phone is RIDICULOUSLY fast. Not noticeably, but RIDICULOUSLY. I can't believe you've been living with stock for this long >.< Custom ROM's and kernels are necessary for this phone haha.

Recommended Froyo Rom

I should be getting my SGS tomorrow coming from the nexus one (CM 6.1 RC1) which im giving to my girlfriend to keep around for 2.3. Ive been lurking the forums since Friday trying to decide which Froyo Rom to install and i would like to have some opinions from you guys to help me decide. Basically im looking for an everyday driver for stability so i dont end up throwing my phone out on the highway lol. I know all froyo release for SGS are leaks but from what ive seen on the forums run decent enough to suit my needs. Thanks in advance!!
It's all just a matter of personal taste. They all appear to be good daily drivers at this point. I personally prefer Team Whiskeys work and all the black that comes with it. I also hate the Touch Whiz Launcher so Onyx is the best fit. Very stable, faster than most and has great battery life.
Personally, I have only used Obsidian (V1 and V2) Version one had a few bugs that I didn't want to deal with, so I went back to Fusion 1.2 until V2 came out the next day. I have been running Obsidian V2 for about 1.5 days now and I have had absolutely no problems. I haven't had any FCs or random shutdowns, etc.. It is very snappy and I have been getting very good battery life (I still had 12% battery left last night after about 15 hours, and for much of that time I was using it heavily (texts, calls, graphic intensive games, etc..)) I have seen good reviews for the other Roms as well, however, I can only speak for Obsidian V2 and I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for stability. However, some people have encountered some bugs, so make sure that you read the instructions carefully and you should be fine. You may wait for V3 to come out too, since I am guessing it will be coming out pretty soon.

Ive checked out their forums as well.
Again personal taste. I didn't really like the bionix rom, it felt a little slower to me than Eugene's R10 and his roms are constantly improving. Right now waiting is the best answer as both of them are still making adjustments and should have updates within the next couple days.

That said, I'll put in a plug for Anderdroid's AOSPish Froyo ROM.
With some trepidation I flashed it earlier this week and to say that I am pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. It's a really good ROM. It's fast, it's been very stable for me, and the battery life has been fantastic - by far best battery I've experienced yet on any ROM.
Also, I haven't tried any of the Bionix Froyo builds, but I am coming from the Bionix Final ROM, which was great, but I just got tired of all of the blackness - and the incredibly cheesy boot/shutdown sounds.
Anderdroids Froyo ROM has a stock Android look, which I'm really liking at this point. Very clean, nice looking ROM.
I'd definitely recommend it.

That rom also peeked my interest as im not interested in samsungs bloatware A.K.A touch wiz. Not fond of boot up or shutdown sounds either but i think im gonna check out Onyx first then get my AOSPish on. Its look pretty clean.
^ you know you can delete the sounds right? The file paths are in the sticky. I agree, first thing I did was delete those.
The one that is least modified gave me the least amount of problems.

This is def going to be my first flash when my phone arrives. Im assuming you just flash through recovery without messing with odin. Odin seems like a PITA but, im sure i will get accustom to using it. My phone can not come in any sooner. Im about to join loserville and call off work to play with my phone all day lol. Im sure i would'nt be the only one here who would do such a thing
If you have a new phone you just root it and then go and download ROM Manager for Root Users (Clockwork) and install that. Then flash Clockwork recovery and boot into Clockwork and flash Onyx. Getting the downloads and the files copied over is probably the hardest part of doing it, lol.
what is this onyx that you guys are speaking about? Is it the same as Obsidian?

bionix 1.3.1 users -- have u converted?

have any of you who previously have installed bionix 1.3.1 converted to another rom and stuck with it? if so, which, and why?
I've tried others including Bionix-v 1.3.2 test and Bionix Next Gen. I keep going back to 1.3.1. I just prefer it. It's simple and effective and does what it's supposed to.
I flashed a 2.2.1 ROM (Bi-Winning) and loved the speed and the hardware acceleration in the browser, and the battery life was pretty similar to Bionix-v 1.3.1, so I decided to keep it. I tried going back to 2.2 roms like B-v 1.3.1 and Trigger 2.0.1 but there were just little things that made me go back to Bi-Winning.
YMMV, but as much I love TW's roms I just can't leave 2.2.1.
Still using bionix 1.3.1 and never try other.
it is so stable and I dont want to test any others.
Dev section is flooded with new roms which is hard to try one by one.
I really want a 2.3 rom but GPS is needed for me.
Any 2.3 rom has a chance to have a working GPS? or simply all 2.3 roms have dead GPS at all?
I've always been a Bionix fan, but I tried out Trigger 3.2 today, and it just FLEW compared to Bionix 1.3.1 for me.
I also love Trigger's theme, and the font they use.
This is the first ROM that is actually better then Bionix for me, and I'm sticking with it.
Switched from bionix to trigger and never looked back.

Same here, switched from Bionix to Trigger. The best move i've made. Trigger is the natural successor of Bionix. go ahead install trigger and you will be happy.
I'm another Trigger convert for a stable 2.2.
I switched to trigger 3.1 for a while. It is a very nice rom, once nextgen came out I had to try it. This rom is great! Very fast. Loving it

Yes....I went from Bionix 1.3.1 to Bionix 1.3.2. It's insanely fast and never flashing anything again until a very good 2.3 Rom comes out where you dont have to jump through hoops to flash and are as good as 2.2 roms. And this won't happen until an official 2.3 rom leaks for the vibrant and then devs have a a few weeks to tinker with it. Until then, Bionix 1.3.2 is super fast and no bugs.
nope. stuck with it + overstock (no oc).
stable + battery life through the roof
i'll convert when we get a GB
I was a long time TeamWhiskey fan. Their roms are still amazing, but as an upgrade junky, when they stopped with 2.2(1.3 and nexgen) and 2.2.1(frost), there hasnt been much lately. Frost wasnt as good as I had hoped. Now I am currently back and forth trying newer 2.2.1 and 2.3.4 roms...patiently awaiting cm7!!!
I used TW roms for a while, but always had a random problem of all sounds stop working, and would need to reboot to fix. Switched to trigger as well, and hav not looked back.
I saw the thread and though I would pop in to say Trigger . . . but after reading the thread that seems like I would just be throwing fuel on the fire.

lol, I am going to try Trigger now cox I cannot get into the call setting in my bionix 1.3.1 all in sudden.
Hope I will be one of them instead of you
I tried Trigger 3, was happy with it, better than Bionix. But then BiWinning got my heart, together with the Bali kernel. It's just so fast and responsive.
you guys should try trigger 3.2 with bullet . you will never go back lol
I was a faithful Team Whiskey user until CM7 came out for vibrant, then I jumped ship and never looked back. I don't use GPS and I always keep a charger with me so bad battery life and no GPS didn't faze me.
I used TW roms up until they stopped updating them after 1.3.1... i switched to Trigger and Im happy with it... hopefully we'll see something worth while from TW soon

I'm currently on NextGen. But I've been considering going back to 1.3.1
Edit: I"m currently looking/waiting for a GB rom with working GPS

Trigger 3.2 vs CM7

What are some of the differences? I use Trigger 3.2 and it works well for me (but KB5 Modem doesnt so im on KB1 which drains battery more but gives me better signal indoors in NYC)
Ive never tried CyanogenMod... anyone prefer one over the other?
I'm also on Trigger, and what has kept me from even trying CM7 is the lack of GPS, which as I understand it stems from the lack of Gingerbread for our phones. I imagine this board will explode once Gingerbread gets leaked, so maybe I'll try CM7 when I see that happen.
i like cm7, but i always go back to trigger. cm7 is good, but the only thing i don't like is the 3d on some gameloft games are skippy. specially for fps like nova 2. im gonna try the new version 17 and see what happens.
edit: ok so i went back to cm7 and i don't think im going to change back. runs smooth and 3d problems go away after playing for a bit. only real issue besides gps is that sometimes you have to mute/unmute phone for people to hear you clearly
I came over to cm7 from trigger 3.2 and I love it. minus the gps, which i rarely used anyways, I love the customization of cm7. also, it just looks so much shinier.. the wallpapers, the themes, everything is just so beautiful.
Thanks for the feedback!
Alex - I too hardly use GPS so maybe I shall give it a try too.
I loved Trigger 3.2, especially with the Bullet kernel. I moved over to CM7 though and have no plans to go back. It's not just a Trigger vs CM argument, but a Froyo vs Gingerbread argument. The generic email app in Froyo on Vibrants is broken, this isn't just a Trigger problem, but a problem with all Froyo ROMs for the Vibrant. In Gingerbread it is buttery smooth. I also like how streamlined CM7 is. Applying a theme for CM7 is easier than on any ROM I have tried before. I also get better Linpack and Quadrant scores using the base kernel for CM7 then I have for any base kernel in Froyo. And like a previous post mentioned, CM7 is extremely customizable. If there is a feature they added that I don't like, it's very easy to turn off that feature. Another nice feature to CM7 is that once you have flash CM7 on your phone, it's very easy to update. I found updating any Froyo ROM to be time consuming since I had to make sure that I had backed up my files in TB and then once I updated my Froyo ROM I would have to restore my TB backup. With CM7 you only need to restore your TB backup after the first flash. Every update after that only updates the specific files they have changed in CM7, so I don't need to go through the restore process each time.
Trigger 3.2 with the Bullet kernel is still faster, more stable (although not by much, CM7 is really stable now), has GPS and a better battery life. Even with all of that, Trigger is a ROM that has reached the end of it's development. CM7 is still in the beginning stages for the Vibrant and continues to grow.
Either way you really can't go wrong since both are fantastic ROMs and it all really comes down to which you prefer. The biggest warning I will give you is if you decide to try out CM7 make sure you know how to Odin you phone, because you will have to perform an Odin on your device if you want to go back to Trigger.
When they fix the mute/unmute bug on CM7 it will be the best ROM, even without GPS.

it depends on how you use your phone, imho i like both im currently on cm7 in trigger i like the speed stability battery life functions and all of that stuff and in cm7 i like the update process since its easy, the new functions and so much more

I need some assistance. Im trying to flash CM7. The directions state to flash ClockworkMod Recovery from ROM Manager Premium. When I do, an option for Vibrant MTD isnt listed...how do I get it to give me that option?
as long as u have rom manager premium all u have to do is click on flash clockwork recovery it will be at very top of rom manager page. Then it will ask u wht type of phone u pick vibrantmtd for cm7 and then u pick 3x NOT 2x. Then after thats done go to download rom and pick cm7 nightlies
Hey movieaddict... I did upgrade to Rom Premium but unfortunately VibrantMTD isnt an option.. Perhaps my Trigger 3.2 bootloader isnt a Froyo bootloader? (If the ROM installed its own)
Update: This is one of the EDT reps wrote on their facebook page: Trigger does not contain one. I believe you can find one in one of the older ODIN packages posted.
So I guess I need to ODIN to stock in order to have a Froyo bootloader? Which is odd because I have ODIN'd to stock in the past...
Anyone have any recommendations?
I got it.. I had to reinstall Rom Manager which is totally a newer version then the one I had on my phone
What is the diff between CWR 2.x and 3.x? The thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061889 indicates you should choose 2.x, which is what I have done.
Thanks.
ive always chosen 3x on cm7 and on 2.2 roms i choose 2x and i havent had one problem yet with cm7!
I had problems with CM7 to where I had to reflash the nightly, well dayly for it to continue to work. It would keep FC everything. It would not remain stable. I stopped updating when #11 hit since my voice calls wouldn't work. I suppose that issue is fixed by now though. That was my experience with CM7 and I don't suppose I will go back until 2.3 is released.
What I don't understand is all the problems people are having with cm7 nightlies? Its pretty straightforward! I prefer cm7 over trigger

From Team Whiskey Bionix V 1.3.1 to?

What's up guys. I flashed some roms a few months ago and kinda just stuck with Team Whiskeys Bionix V 1.3.1. It was snappy and had great battery life but after time it seems to have slowed down. I flashed it probably 5-6 months ago. Now its not quite as quick as it once was...kinda seems a little buggy.
So I'm looking to flash a new rom. I'm looking for something that is stable and quick and wont be a bunch of trouble flashing over bionix 1.3.1. Im also running the Overstock kernel if that makes any difference. Let me know things I'll need to avoid if I don't want to brick my phone and what you guys think.
Thanks

Me too, I have tried them all and I go right back to Bionix, its fast, great battery, everything works and it has a nice clean design. I love the splash screen no annoying badly designed "themes" or splash screen that look like it was done by a angst teenager. Just a professional highly functional rom. I miss those guys.
Time to move on to gingerbread JVR an Jvs roms are great CM7 2
I went from 1.3.1 to Biffmod. Great battery life and very few minor quirks for me. Have been on it about a month and really liking it. Although I'm still keeping an eye on other ROMs. I feel like I'm neglecting my phone when I don't give it something new!

.....anyways GoodVibe having Overstock don't matter cuz it will get replaced after you flash your new ROM with whatever kernel that ROM comes with but ,since you're moving from Bionix, make sure you disable Voodoo. Try the Bali 1.8.8 kernel if you end up flashing a Froyo ROM that supports it (good battery life). Your gonna have a little more work to do if you go to a GB ROM.
I decided I'm gonna keep Bionix 1.3.1 on my daily Vibrant since I don't have any issues with it and when I get more time try others on my spare Vibrant. If Bionix feels a lil laggy try going to recovery and wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions and see if that helps to refresh it or you could always re-flash it to get it fresh again, but I'm pretty sure your itching to try something new. Luck homie.

Have you tried this ?? Its fast and stable.

Thanks mrrob...that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I've been out of the loop for a little bit and I don't feel like reading through 25 threads to figure out what rom bugs out when flashed over whatever kernel or vice versa. And I also don't know what roms are stable and user friendly and what are just nuts. I tried TW frost when it first came out and that wrecked my phone. So I flashed back to jfd and then bionix and quit flashing for a while. Too much risk for me I guess.
Its funny...there are so many roms now. I remember just a few months ago cm7 was new for vibrant and the only other real decent roms were trigger, bionix, and azura I think. Just a few and that was it.
